Saw the Z2 today.... - Xperia Z1 General

Today was the offical pre order for Z2 in Singapore. Was deciding to pre order one and to sell off my current z1.. The moment I picked up the Z2.. I was disappointed... The display was not as fabulous as what was reviewed.. Seriously, its slightly better then the Z1, Not as good as the Z Ultra. I can confirm that apart from the viewing angles that Z1 lacks, its almost the same as the Z2!! Infact sharper then the Z2! The camera wise, just the lack of 4K recording, the rest was infact the same as Z1 4.4... The Z2 still captures Superior Auto in 8Mp. Still No option to change the resolution in Superior Auto. Sad....
The trade in Price for Z1 here in Singapore is $450... The Z2 cost $998.... So its an additional topup of $540 to buy an additional 0.2" screen, Slightly better screen (Because of the Viewing Angles, but lost in Sharpness), an additional 1GB ram and a 4K recording software..
In the end I hesitated and walk off the shop, need to have a second thought.... So dear Bros, I have tried the display set and this is what I found out. Its up to u guys to see if its a worth upgrade.... Z Ultra's screen is still the best!!!

Not even close to worth it. Z2 is such a minor upgrade to the Z1. And seriously, who has a need for 4k recording? Your SD card will fill up crazy fast for a difference that you will barely, if at all, be able to notice. Do you have a 4k TV to even view it on? Since 4K is useless marketing hype, all you really get is an extra gig of RAM and a slightly bigger screen, which in my opinion is a negative feature, not positive.

Well from what I have seen so far the Z2's screen seems to be one of the best out there, that being said I won't buy it coz I already have the Z1, it's better to wait for the Z3, it should come with 805 processor and 32 gb internal memory.

The Z2 is definitely NOT meant for current Z1 owners. It's a reasonable upgrade over the Z, and a very solid upgrade for the previous flagships. Nobody expects you to buy a new phone every six months, not even every year. 18 months or 24 months is a more reasonable update cycle; and Sony's current cycle gives you a brand new (< 6 months old) phone to consider whenever you decide to upgrade, while others (Apple/Samsung/etc) may have an almost one-year-old phone as their current flagship.
The only problem is when people decide they must always have the newest, then the cycle may seem too short. But, when you realize your Z1 is still among the best phones out there (even after the Z2 is launched, and possibly after the Z3 is launched), you will calm down. I didn't even consider the Z2, as the Z1 still does everything I need.
BTW, taking 20MP pictures remove one of the major advantages of the Z1/Z2 camera, which is supersampling to reduce noise. It's the same technique used by Nokia on the 808 (still the best camera phone ever), the phone analyses all 20 million pixels and "filters" the high frequency part by resampling the image to a smaller resolution, which will remove random noise and make the image cleaner. This is a byproduct of techniques used by the oil industry in oil prospecting, it's a very well established mathematical mechanism that is now being applied to photographic imaging. I'm sure it cost Sony a lot to develop/license it, and they want you to use it since the resulting 8MP image will be better than the 20MP one in almost every single case. Actually, since most people will take pictures to upload to Facebook, the 3MP/2MP settings are much more useful than the 20MP one since they allow for much more effective supersampling (and Facebook will butcher the picture down to ~2MP anyway)

it's all the hype
Z1 is a great phone and a huge improvement over the Z. Z2 is just Z1 with a few minor improvements And a design fail. Sony included the charging port and memory card under a single flap. Only fools would sell a z1 for a z2.

Every single person has his/her own Opinion

The only feature I missing is when I watching youtube or gaming the dual front speaker. But not worth to sell my Z1 just for that.

You can't possibly be serious. Even though I despise OLED and prefer IPS LCD / TFT displays, the N3's screen is really gorgeous. It's much brighter than the Z1's. It's the only thing I miss since selling my N3 and buying the Z1.

I've been saying from the beginning that straight on the Z1's screen is one of the best. It appears 'washed out' because it is not oversaturated like almost every other phone screen out there, and is extremely realistic and color accurate. The Z2 seems to have lost some of that accuracy in favour of 'looking better', but I'm OK with that.

Are you sure about that? I'm 99.999% sure AMOLED screens are still nowhere near being as bright as LCD screens.
Source. The Z1's screen is actually really bright, 495 nits which is the highest of an Android phone in 2013! The Note 3 is pretty disappointing in the brightness category actually.

Waiting for Z3 ???

Agreed,Z1's screen shows more accurate colours.
Btw,I still own a Xperia P Its Awesome even under bright Sunlight (Max 935nits)

Still people out there who fall for the OLED oversaturation trick I see.

I will be upgrading if for no other reason than Sony included the LTE bands that I need. I have never been able to put my hands on a 6909 at a reasonable price until a month or so back and by then the Z2 was getting to close to justify the replacement of my 6903 just for LTE.
One things for sure, it's a testament to how much I like this phone when I will put up with no LTE...

the colours are more vibrant and the blacks are solid black though, no dark greyishness.
theres upsides and downsides to both though, IPS and TFT screens are much brighter especially outdoors in sunlight, colour productions are more natural etc.

Practically everyone, to the average consumer natural colors=washed out
Just a few days ago my uncle was wondering why Plants vs Zombies looked so "lifeless" on my phone, and compared it to his S3
So i can see why Sony bumped up the colors

So many people use the dynamic/vivid modes on their TV too, and are convinced it's better.

You can clearly see that Z2 is really good when it comes to display and you just saw it inside of the store and maybe a night time.
So I think that they might have reduced lots of white/greyish colour for sure.

Z1 Compact experience moving from Z1

I wrote recently about moving to a Z1 from an S3 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2756104).
Like one poster, the Z1's massive size became one of my biggest bug-bears with the device. Amazing to have such a large screen, but in daily use putting it in jeans pockets and carrying I found the size a con, enhanced by the slipperiness of it.
I changed to a Z1 Compact. Here are my pros and cons from the change, in case they are useful to anyone else.
As in the previous review, these are the things that matter to me. If you want a large screen for example, then stop reading because the Z1 Compact will not make you happy.
Firstly - the pros of the Z1 Compact:
- The size is perfect. Sort of like a cross between an iPhone and a Samsung S2 or S3. Just big enough to type quickly and read, but small enough I barely notice it.
The bezel area seems less than the Z1, which I always felt was wasted space.
- The camera is better. Yes, I've seen threads saying they are the same. I compared MY z1 and MY z1 compact and the compact was more detailed in broad daylight. Notice the emphasis on "MY" - there is probably much variation around the world and in single item variations also. For me, the z1 compact took the already great Z1 camera and made it better. I'm hugely impressed.
(I note that mine is not one of the ones with the flash bleed issue that has plagued some z1 compacts.)
- Not a pro of the Compact per se, but I got a magnetic charger with it, and that is magic. Definitely worth getting.
- The Compact attracts less attention. For international travelling, this is a pro to me.
- The touch screen is marginally better than the Z1. I found the Z1 slightly unresponsive. Both have the factory protector still on.
Also there is an option to use the Compact screen with gloves.
And of course the cons:
- The battery life of the Z1 is still better. The compact is great. I'm very happy with the battery life. I finish a day of work after listening to music on spotify (cached) and making a few calls with about 75% left. This is great to me.
But the Z1 was slightly better still. Both are very good.
- The Z1's screen was pretty amazing in size and detail. I don't notice the 1080p to 720p downgrade because the ppi is still high on the Z1 compact, but the Z1 was definitely a "wow" for detail on the screen. And the size was better for longer reading.
- The Compact looks less "premium". If you want to attract attention, get the Z1.
Lastly, the things that weren't better:
- I thought the screen would be a lot better on the Compact. It's not. The vibrancy is marginally better. But it is not a jump ahead of the Z1.
- Soft keys still annoy me, but I will have to try another poster's suggestion of the pie controls in Xposed/Gravity box.
Hope this helps anyone interested.
Wait, battery life short than Z1? are you sure? Z1 compact have an IPS screen, it better than Z1 on view and eat battery not much than TFT screen on Z1

It depends on the usage though... If your screen is always on obviously Z1 Compact has a much more efficient battery life. But when a phone spends most of the day screen off(listening music, phone calls, FM radio etc.) then obviously Z1 wins.
Were you annoyed with the viewing angles of the screen and general washed out screen. Whey I was at the store Z1C looked miles ahead on Z1 in terms of black and contrast.
z1-z1c
I had Z1 for a 3-4 months then i moved to Z1C..
Pros for Z1C: Better battery then Z1 (that`s a personal conclusion)
Better display.. (colors are more alive and black is more black than z1)
Better wi-fi range
for me it seems more responsiv, smooth, than z1
Camera is greater than z1 , don`t know why (are the same)
slighther , only 138g
Internal and external speaker are a little bit louder compare to z1
Now Cons: Miss the glass from the back ( that plastic from z1c scratches very easely
For those who want a bigger display i recommend z1
I think that`s all .. but I'm glad i went from z1 to z1 c (don`t miss it at all)
Sorry for my poor english

Sony Xperia Z4, Z4 Tablet, Z4 Compact, Z4 Ultra: Exclusive Leak

So the Z4 Compact phone is going to remain 4.6" display, but being bumped to 1920 x 1080 HD. That is awesome. The 10" tablet specs sound amazing, unfortunately, I prefer the 8" tablet size.

a 1080p resolution on a 4.6 display is a total waste. After ~320ppi anything else will just consume more power with no visual benefit.

I totally agree. I think the current 720p screen is beautiful, and if it means subtracting from the awesome battery life (unless battery specs change in Z4C), then it is a total waste. I think they are doing it for the higher pixel density crowd. It is the only negative potential buyers see on the phone because of the new push for higher resolution. I was even turned off initially thinking it was just another watered down compact phone, until I read the reviews in detail of how awesome the display is and all the other specs.
Ahh to get a Z3C or to wait.
I'm more interested in the new sensor for the camera
So im assuming the 801 to 810 is a huge jump.
Wonder what the battery life will be like too.
Im all for increased battery life
It doesn't sound like a dead cert the the Z4 will be coming out in compact form. Sony does usually skip a model with the compact versions.
But the changes rumored for the regular Z4 will be awesome -- Qi charging, exposed micro USB port, no more dedicated magnetic charging port (which will make cases much simpler). That is basically my list of what could be improved on the Z3. Now if only Sony would tell us it will have Gorilla Glass on both sides
So I bought a brand new device day one a month ago and now the successor is announced it's a strange world we're living in....

That's only true if you have average eyesight and you are at least 12" away from the screen. I use my phone and can readily distinguish pixels on my z1c (and its slightly-denser-than-z3c 720p screen) in a variety of situations. There are further issues for rendering most eastern languages, where they can take advantage of >500ppi screens quite easily.
Yes, there are tradeoffs involved, including potentially less battery life, but to say there is "no visual benefit" is simply ignorant. I will welcome the sharper screen, and I know I am not the only one.

I have better-than-average eyesight (about 20-15), and I can barely distinguish individual pixels on my Z3C, and only when holding it too close to my face to actually use. I would consider anything over 300 PPI good enough, and anything over 350 PPI perfect.
The Z4C being 1080p might be a disappointment if it results in a loss of battery life, but maybe they'll improve their battery tech enough to make up for it. In any case, wireless charging will be very nice to have.

I keep hearing that but do you have a source?
Personally the upgrades I want to see in the upcoming Z4C/Z5C are:
Wireless charging/ waterproof usb port
Better camera/curved lens/OIS
Atleast 32GB base storage + sd
Better front facing speakers
MORE battery life
I'm fine with 720p at 4.6 but 1080p would be nice if the battery is increased and the hardware is improved to match (Although imagine an 810 with a 720p screen  )
3GB+ RAM SD 810 or better, yada yada

Don't have the link at hand but the same website said last month that's what their source revealed to them.
Well they could always do what AMD and nVidia do.... rebadge old products.... Then Z3 becomes Z4 compact .

There are many things to improve (constrast, brightness etc) in a screen and let's hope they focus on these.
Anyway stuff that i want to see in the upcoming Z4C:
-Same footprint device with 4.6-4.8'' screen @ 720p resolution
-S805,3GB ram 32GB storage+SD
-Better camera and if possible OIS
-2800mah battery
-IR Blaster
-Dual sim
-Single covered port for sim/sd card and water resistant USB port so we can find a decent case
-Matte back as in Z3 tablet compact
-And of course Lollipop out of the box

I would buy this phone in a heartbeat.
EYeah ! Lag will be impossible with that Chipset and
720 but I think they will go higher res anyway.
I do not care if the phone is 10mm thick I want at least a
3000 mah battery.
This Z4 if ruggedly built may be a 2 year type phone , so
wonderfully overspecced.
Hope it's rugged Device and fully engineered Camera this time with digital and OIS.
I will pay tops for this, then I won't wish for a Note 4 Compact / Alpha type thing....
Love to see a full 810 in a Compact !
More wattage than HTC Speakers and maybe Kevlar Drivers like tiny studio monitors -already waterproof.
I'm not sure such wish lists of components and features will ever actually fit in such a small phone. But we can dream
Actually I think this can be produced given the fact that since 2 years the motherboard is smaller and smaller

is it really a 1080p display ?

hello friends. i just got back to using z1 after using galaxy s4(first 1080p phone and i liked it) . then used lg optimis g ( its screen is much much better and sharper than the 1080p gs4) also used lg g3 for 2 weeks and it was better than og and s4 of course
now i got a z1 and first thing i noticed is that colors on screen lack too much contrast . now i only have my og and s4 to compare to.
compared to og :
og screen is much much more sharp
colors are more pleasing tobyhe eyes
blue is more like white on z1
black is grey
red is orange on z1
viewing photos on web and specially preview photoa from playstore is really interesting : on z1 these previews lack detail and look lower resolution just like comparing a ps3 game onbtv. then using a pc at 1080p on the same tv.
reading on the 720p og is more comfortable. viweing many web pages and read some gamarena on both. text is sharper and more comfortable to read on the og
z1 screen . white is yellowish white. no matter what whute balance i use or screen filtres i tried the og ips display is just amazing and even better than the suoer amoled s4 which has yellowish screen too.
another thing i noted is that 720p youtube videos are little blurry on z1. but on og are like 1440p
my z1 is faulty ? no i called two of my friends with z1 and z2. the z1 was same as mine but thank god the Z2 screen is muchbimprovement but sharpness was never close the og or g2 or g3.
z2 screen has more contrast than the og and colors are deeper but i dont understand is it feels like there is some kind of filter on it very slight fxaa or something.
also white is yellow on the z2 .
lg sucks making sscreens. but aony withbtheir bravua screens cant make a decent screen forbtheirbsmartphones
Z1 has tempered glass, and z1 screen is the highest ppi which is 441, so its sharper. The colors are okay its on the realistic side not like other phones that has over colored.

my z1 is faulty ? no i called two of my friends with z1 and z2. the z1 was same as mine but thank god the Z2 screen is muchbimprovement but sharpness was never close the og or g2 or g3.
z2 screen has more contrast than the og and colors are deeper but i dont understand is it feels like there is some kind of filter on it very slight fxaa or something.
also white is yellow on the z2 .
lg sucks making sscreens. but aony withbtheir bravua screens cant make a decent screen forbtheirbsmartphones

We have two kind of display for phones till now
LCD ( tft, ips ,q-ips,....) Xperia z, z1, zu but z1c is IPS z2, z3 are IPS too
Led ( amoled, super amoled, ....)
Please search more about dispalys
But we can tune that by custom kernels
Amoled is also TFT
An AMOLED display consists of an active matrix of OLED pixels generating light (luminescence) upon electrical activation that have been deposited or integrated onto a thin-film-transistor (TFT) array, which functions as a series of switches to control the current flowing to each individual pixel.[5]

only oled is diffrent.
An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) is a light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compound which emits light in response to an electric current.

z1 has lcd tft tn, this is really old display
what ever screen is there, it sucks.
also i have this question if you dont mind. is it just me or the z1 is not as snappy as it used to be on kitkat amd jellybean. also ram is way too low, og has twie free ram(vodaphone rom) arround 1gb most time
The displays on Xperia devices are less color saturated than Samsung AMOLEDs . But the Z1 display is even more dull than the rest Xperia lineup. You can go to Display setting and bump up the settings on the White Balance to make it a little better. Or just use a custom kernel or tweak kernel settings. I don't think the Z1 is any slower on LP than JB or KK but yes there's definitely more heat-up and RAM issues.

So Sony just does it perfectly with the 6 month cycle of new devices. They get soooo old
Reading OT gave me cancer. Did you read what you were going to post before clicking on a POST button at all?

You are the person "store mode" in TV's is made for: intense and wrong colors.
The only thing that is really a bit annoying about the display is that the viewing angle is on the small'ish side.

free ram is bad ram, it is not used for anything. See here
On android more specifically the more apps are kept in RAM instead of restarted every time are a good thing to save cpu time and battery.
Apart from the not-so-good viewing angles, the z1 display is pretty good for me.
Its just a matter of preference. After using devices with oled displays (which are notorious, in a good sense, for over-saturation), I think you have started to like punchy colours.
But there are people who don't like over-saturated colours (most of the time). I am one of those people. So for me, the display of z1 is really good enough.
wrong, optimus g can open up to 8 xda tabs without reloading them, but on Z1 tabs would start reloading on the 4th or 3rd tab ....
i can use g+ . fb. msger. hangout. music. playstore and few tabs on chtome without any reload.....
z1 could never do it few tabs on chrome and check google then go back to facebook, either the launcher or the fb app would reload
more free ram is never wasted
never got a home redraw
4 tabs open and 7 apps stiill open and no reload yet
acually reloading is very rare on this phone only achievable if you use chrome browser
still 360mb more free ram to play with .
sony need more lessons on how to optimise their phones
also optimus g has twice bloatware apps

Well g2 is almost the same as og tho og has more free ram
Xperia z1 compact and z3 compact are similar to z1 with about 700mb free ram
Every update we get less ram, my previous z1 on jelly bean had like 1 gb free ram

Z5 Compact competition? Sharp Aquos XX 2

Recently released with very little fanfare, unsure of global availability.
4.7" display, Snapdragon 808, 3gb RAM, 1080p Display, 2800mha battery, 13 MP camera, Water and dust resistant.
Could call it a Z5 compact pro?

I wouldn't call it a compact pro, snapdragon 808 is far from the 810, the 100 mAh difference won't counter the fact that need it needs to drive four times as many pixels but the IGZO screen might help a bit but I rather go with the IPS screen. While the Z5 series camera seems to have some issues (most likely software) 13MP is a far cry from 23. The RAM is nice but doubt it will do much difference in the long run.
I could maybe see it as an alternative to the Z5C but it is in no way it's superior, it's also IP67 (from what info I can find) which is a far cry from IP65 and IP68 even though Sony has gone back a bit on their marketing for it.
Very nice little phone but like they said above, that FHD display will require more juice to run, despite being IGZO. I seriously don't feel a need for more pixels on the Z5 display, it looks great already and I'd rather the GPU performance and battery life be boosted than just more pixels. It's also a shame about the 16GB internal storage. The RAM is the only real specification that makes me envious, even then I'm quite content with the Z5C multitasking so far. It's great to see another high-spec compact phone though.
What's Sharp's track record with OS updates like? That's the real question here I think. Sony has proven to support their Z series well and we already know they are busy working on the Marshmallow update.
its no competition because sharp only aims for the asian market.
There needs to be more competition in this market. I'm still plenty satisfied with my Z3C and while neither the Z5C nor the Aquos Compact are a big enough step up for me to consider upgrading, I'm glad that another player as entered.
I held an old HTC Incredible S the other day and it felt oh so good! If HTC could just get their heads of out their butts and develop a decent phone again (not a phablet), I would run back to them in a hurry.

I had a Samsung Captivate 5 years ago and remember seeing an Incredible around that time. It really felt amazing in the hand and it made me jealous.

I would be even more interested in the Z5C if it had those specs. I don't understand why the Compact is still the only real flagship in a smaller size. No one else seems interested in competing with Sony.
I'm jealous of the Camara opening speed. Lol

I actually bought a sharp aquos shv31 that was a hare smaller than my z1 compact, and a beautiful full 1080p display. Problem is they lock the apn to their austrailan market and apparently use some onerous anti-root methods that no one has broken it open. I have to send back as its useless with no data, but I totally love the sharp phone otherwise. I really wish they would put out an unlocked version, as I ended up buying a z5 compact to replace my z1c, and already waiting to hate the fact I'm going to lose most of its features when I unlock/root it.
Damn sony and their drm.

Yes, I also owned Z1c and Z5c now. Was also looking forward on sharp phones but nowadays they are very hard to root, so a no go to me.

Xperia Z is such a legend

As I'm owning an Xperia Z5, since a year and a half, I still find that the Z was the most popular and really well supported device, so many ROMs, kernels, mods, themes and just everything, even Sony supported it for a long period of time, but the biggest part was the people who spent hours to make the best for it, it's such a legend, made by Sony, and the people continued to make it better.
It's a bit sad that I am pretty disappointed with my Z5, it didn't make me happy like the Z, and from the development side? It's nothing compared to what the Z has gotten..
Thanks for reading and have a great day!

I know, and I still using it for daily.
May I know details of every things that make you disappointed on your Z5? Because I have a plan to upgrade my device, either Z5c or the latest XZ1c.

The Z5 lacks a lot of development and support, if you don't care about that then it's not the only issue, the Snapdragon 810 literally sucks! A lot of heat (running at over 50°C all the time) and terrible performance for an octa core CPU, Especially in games, even some cheap Chinese phones performance better, however it's an improvement over the Z, just not that much of an improvement as I expected.
It's not the phone's fault, just the Snapdragon 810 chip, and it's not the only one.
However I highly recommend avoiding any device with a Snapdragon 810 CPU because of the heat, bad performance and battery draining (I barely get 3 hours of screen on time), and I also recommend getting the Xperia XZ Premium, it has a 4K screen and a bigger battery unlike the XZ1 line.
More about the Z5:
Screen: meh, it has a blueish tint that makes the whites aren't so white, the TFT screen on the Z was better except outdoors.
Camera: good but not great, especially indoors, pretty noisy, 4K recording isn't so wow and the 120fps slow motion is too dark and low quality IMO, But it does pretty well in good lighting conditions.
Speakers: not so good, but I was able to get them louder after installing a mod.
Software: the Android 7.1.1 is the last update that the device will probably get, the nougat was a failure on the Z5 and XZ though, so I'm still using marshmallow.
So it's a fine device at the end but if you can go for newer devices like the XZ Premium then you better do!

I know about SD810 heating problem. It sucks, but till now, only Z5 family available in my country (so sad). XZ premium was great but I don't like a phone that has screen more than 5 inch. That's why I'm looking for XZ1c. 4K screen is not a big deal for me.
Thanks for sharing.

I don't think the XZ1c would disappoint you either, it has nearly the same hardware as the XZP except for the screen and battery, and also, wait for them to come to your country, don't be in hurry.
