I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to have simultaneous OTG & charging with the use of a pogo pin charger?
For instance, plug in a usb OTG into the main microUSB charging port, and use a pogo pin charger [either make one or buy when they are available], and have a flash drive, or hard drive plugged in, and charge at the same time with the pogo pin connector?
I used to have a Nexus 7, and via a custom kernel, and a OTG charging cable [basically a regular OTG with additional power wires & connector for charger]. But I think it would be simpler to use the pogo pin approach. The only thing I'm worried of however, the kernel might disable OTG while it charges via pogo, or perhaps disable charging while OTG is enabled. I guess in this case, we would need a modified kernel to achieve simultaneous OTG and charging.
Here is a link to one of the first Nexus 10 pogo charger cables and it makes this claim:

So if that statement is true than the answer to your question is Yes.

However, I know how sellers often make unfounded claims like that. So while it's probably a good sign, I am not convinced it's true. If anyone is fortunate enough to have a pogo charger, could you test it out with a otg cable and let us know the results?
Or if you're a kernel hacker, maybe take a look at the kernel source code and tell me what you think?
Also if anyone has a link where I could read about pogo pins for the N10, I'd like to read it. I'm interested in trying to make one, if they don't make any low-cost ones in the near future.

Just wondering, have you actually tried it yet? I remember on the n7 it would disable pogo charging when you plugged in otg. I hope n10 is different.

I got the pogo cable in today. I plugged the usb-otg cable into the Nexus 10 with a thumbdrive connected to it. Stickmount recognized the thumbdrive and I can read/write to it. I noticed that the battery runs down while the otg is plugged in though. Running Paranoidandroid 2.99 with whatever kernel comes with that.

I know it's not the original question, but it looks like that would be possible with a modified OTG USB cable. Sounds like you already have something similar.
I was thinking about this for using my n10 for larger video recording when away from wifi. Just need to hook a battery up to the OTG while its plugged into the thumb drive. It takes a charge off my laptop when connected via the otg usb, so it should work as well with the correct setup voltage/wiring .
I would also like to know the pin designation for the pogo plug. If you can do the same setup as the one above, with the pogo... There would be less chance of damage to the tablet on the go......

I know a nonstandard OTG cable [a OTG charging cable, basically the same as a regular one, except it has female USB only connected to the charging pins] and a modded kernel allowed for simultaneous OTG + charge on the Nexus 7, but I'd rather not have to deal with that, as getting a separate pogo charger seems like a better option.

It has to be a moded kernel to access the data in read/write mode? Nothing to do with charging, and correct?
What I was considering is a battery/usb hub combo. One that plugs into the micro usb port and the battery actually has a female usb port for the thumb drive (need root to write to the drive, but not to stream from it). Amazon carries lots of external batteries with micro usb connection and the female usb port.
I agree, the pogo would be much simpler and still allow data through the micro usb.
The pogo would be much better for portability for this type of use especially if it allows for faster charging. If no one has the pin layout, guess I'll wait to get mine and test them myself. 6 pins on the n10 itself so it's not a standard usb pin setup?

No, on the Nexus 7, if you plug in a OTG cable [which basically grounds a certain pin, the only difference between micro OTG and micro to full size USB adapter], it disables charging through power pins, because it needs to send power to OTG device, for example, a flash drive. It needs +5V power.
So the kernel mod was to disable the output of power, so that it could instead receive power and charge, from the charger. [The charger also 100% powering the OTG device]
Even if you have an externally powered hard drive, it needs power to turn on, even if it uses a wall adapter for the actual power to run the device.

Just for the heck of it I plugged a USB cable connected to my PC into the Nexus 10 while the pogo was also connected. The Nexus 10 showed up on the PC as it normally does in the file explorer and I can transfer files back and forth as usual. I went to Settings -> Battery on the Nexus 10 and it showed "Charging AC". I then unplugged the pogo cable and the status changed to "Charging USB". Plugged the pogo back in and the status switched back to "Charging AC". Then to make sure the pogo was actually doing the charging, I watched 2 hours of Netflix with the screen set to full brightness. The battery went down only 2%, so I'm pretty sure the pogo was doing the charging.

Thanks for your test. However with Nexus 10 connected to pc it is not in otg/host mode. You need to connect for example an usb memory with a otg cable to test if charging work with host mode enabled. There seems to be some discussions going on claiming pogo charging is disabled in host mode on Nexus 10 as well. It would be really really stupid if that's the case and I can't for the world figure out how they could put this limitation in the kernel.

Yes I tried that and the pogo would not charge.
EDIT: I bought a couple of OTG Y-cables on ebay (1 male micro usb end, 1 female micro usb end and a female usb end) to play around with when I saw they had a fix for the Nexus 7. I tried one on my Nexus 7 (PA rom and Timur kernel), connecting the female usb to a powered usb hub that has 16gb sdhc card plugged into it. Then connected the female micro usb end to a spare micro usb charging cable and the other end of the charging cable to the usb hub. The male micro usb end gets connected to the Nexus 7. I fired up the Nexus 7 while in the Asus pogo dock I bought for it and it charges the Nexus 7 while also allowing the OTG connection. I tried the same setup with my Nexus 10 (PA Rom, Ktoonez kernel) and pogo cable and it worked. The Nexus 10 charges through the pogo cable while the OTG works also. With the usb hub I'm using with the Nexus 10, I had to plug the charging cable into a charger wall wart. I don't think the old hub was putting out enough power to power the usb device. I let them both run over a day like this. Ran some RomToolBox app backups on both them and they both are charging on the pogo pins while doing so. If you go to system settings -> battery it shows "Charging AC" on both.
The galaxy nexus already has a custom kernel that supports OTG + charging (via a y-cable):

In that thread (and the link in the OP there) there are discussions about porting that kernel to the nexus 7. Also, this modified kernel is (currently) for 4.1.2. Unfortunately I am not smart enough to do this myself (especially we are now dealing with the pogo cable and the USB); I do hope to let everyone -- especially the developers! -- knows about the possibility in view of the gnex kernel.
Is this an issue only with Disk Media over OTG, or is it with anything (controllers, etc.) over OTG?

Hello i just received my pogo cord, and had it charging when i wanted to transfer music, plugged micro usb into pc and it my screen woke up, just curious if this might help or not or maybe it doesnt do anything??

If your connect both your pogo cable and your mico usb cable to your pc they won't charge at the same time. Drivers at the kernel level detect that both are connected to the tablet and only let one charge to prevent power draw overload. In this case it would charge from the pogo charger as it can recognize that the pogo charger is delivering a safe amount of power while simultaneously cutting down on charging time. You can however connect your pogo charger and have the tablet charge while the micro usb cable is connected to transfer files to and from your tablet, use adb etc. Let me know if you still have questions.

I would double check that comment. I have a pogo plug and OTG cable with Ethernet adapter or SD card reader attached. The icon that indicates the device is charging shows BUT it is not actually charging. I confirmed this under both Android 4.3.x and 4.2.2

Very interesting, the point I mentioned above is as least theoretically what is supposed to happen when plugging on both charging sources. Just to clarify your device doesn't charge at all when you have the pgoo plug and OTG cable with Ethernet adapter or SD card reader attached?

In theory yes but Google didn't include it in the Android rom. A developer for the old Nexus 7 did add the capability but never for the Nexus 10. I doubt very much that the next version of the Nexus 10 will include a pogo plug connection.

I have a Transcend StoreJet 500gb external HDD that I want to connect to my Nexus 7 (2012). Flash based usb sticks work fine, but this hard disk with the actual spinning platter doesn't. I found out that you need to "power the hard drive with a usb hub".
I don't have a usb hub, so I thought of this. Since my External HDD has a usb cable with two usb connectors, can I plug one of them into the Nexus 7 battery charger and the other one into my nexus 7 with a OTG cable?
Can I power it properly like that?
Or is it dangerous?
If I only connect it to my nexus 7 it makes beeping sounds and doesn't get detected. Not much power output on the Nexus 7....
Please help!

You need a powered USB hub, they aren't that expensive.

Yes you can do that, it is not dangerous. I power my external WD Passport HD by plugging one usb connector into the pc for power and the other into the OTG usb cable. My drive won't spin unless supplied with the additional power. I have also tried it by plugging the connector into an a/c adapter instead of the pc usb port, which also worked fine.

Hi all,
I have a similar problem with my N7 attaching a small USB powered HDD to watch HD movies stored on that drive. Thing is, when I attach the HDD on my USB OTG cable, all i hear is a repeated "clack..clack" and nothing happens, the HDD doesn´t start. So the other day I got my Nexus 5 and for fun I tried to use the SAME HDD with the same cable and same adapter on the N5 and it worked flawlessly! Starts up, Stickount mounts it and boom!
Now how can it be that one device can work with the HDD and one not? I´mm guessing it may be related to AC voltage levels, but shouldn´t the Nexus 7 be able to deliver the same or even more power to the HDD than the Nexus 5?I don´t get it....

I was wondering if anyone is having similar issues with aftermarket cables.
I bought 2 cables that work fine in 2.0 for charging/data transfer.
When I put them into a 3.0 ports nothing happens, there is no prompt to access the phone, and the USB options do not appear on the phone.
I have downloaded the Samsung drivers, and tried 2 different PCs.
I have no issues using the provided Samsung cable.
Any ideas?
I haven't experienced this. Actually, I think the Samsung USB 3.0 cable that came with my phone was bad. When I used it, USB 3.0 would stay grayed out. I had another one for a portable hard drive and that one works fine with the phone. Maybe just try a different brand. These cables seem rather fragile.

I purchased a 9ft Amazon Basics USB 3.0 cable and all is well. Connecting through a USB 3.0 port, my device was immediately recognized, and I had no problem transferring data files to and from the device.
My only guess would have been to ensure that your PC's USB 3.0 drivers are installed in order for the ports to work properly. Since you're not having any issues with the stock cable, I'm not really sure.
I don't know if it'll make a difference in this case, but I have USB Debugging enabled.
I have all of the drivers update and USB debugging. Think I just got some shoddy cables.

I called Samsung and eventually after explaining what a micro USB 3.0 cable is and how it is supposed to work, and how it is not working, they finally gave me a place to send the cable and they will supposedly send me a replacement. I'm not holding my breath though. I think I would have had better luck addressing the envelope to "The Twilight Zone."

If your 3.0 charger charges fine but is not recognized when plugged into a port I'd check the the port drivers and make sure they are up to date. But first plug into all of your ports. It could be that not all of the ports on your lap/desk top are usb 3.0 friendly. And I've seen instances where if the device has not yet been recognized it will not pick up the device theough a usb 3.0 link. So maybe first get your note recognized by using a 2.0 connector then backdoor with the 3.0 and see what happens.
samsung test all of their cords before they leave manufacturing so getting a dud is very unlikely yet not impossible.
As for the aftermarket cords I normally stick to belkin. Best build quality for a fair price.

I have tried everything.
I plugged into 2.0 and the 3 options pop up to select a mode where 3.0 is grayed out. That menu closes when you unplug.
If you lock your phone while in this menu, you can change the port, unlock the phone and the menu is still there, but it will not allow me to select 3.0.
I have 2 3.0 ports on my laptop, 1 on the docking station, and 1 on my standalone.
None of them work with the aftermarket cable. I will take it as a loss as I really only need them for charging away from home.

That is indeed odd. Im not sure what to tell you. Hopefully someone will chime in and be of more assistance.
Try changing your network connections. Using usb3.0 puts on airplane mode. If u have wifi on or something it'll show greyed out. It might not be wifi but it's something similar. Saw the greyed out 3.0 the other day and changed a setting on my phone and it came back. Hope it helps.

I am having the same issue. I have 2 white usb 3.0 cables that I bought online from china via ebay. They were supposed to be USB 3.0 compatible and they look similar to the original stock cable.
When I use the stock cable w/ my usb3.0 port in rear of motherboard, the phone prompts me to enable USB 3.0 mode. When I use either generic cable, it will only function in USB 2.0 mode (I get no prompt for 3.0).
I am running DarthStalker Note 3 Version 6 and 3.4.0_Compulsion Kernel_7.0 on Tmobile version Note 3
I am willing to sacrifice (cut open) one of my generic cables if anyone thinks they can help diagnose the exact cause
I am having issues finding an extra USB 3.0 cable that performs to the level of the one that came with my phone. (My OEM cable works great)
I think the issue is that the 3rd party cables use cheap, thin wire. They can put a micro USB 3.0 tip on it... but the thin wires can't carry the bandwidth.
This is most plainly noticeable by downloading an app that shows the current flow while charging. Try downloading "Galaxy Charging Current *Lite*" and charge your phone through various combinations of
cable (USB2, USB3, OEM, 3rd party)
receptacle (1A, 2A, OEM, 3rd Party),
USB port (USB2, USB3, motherboard, adaptor card)
...etc. Even wireless charging, if you're equipped.
(It should also be noted that the phone will throttle the current flow as it gets closer to full. You'll get higher flow at 30% than 76% or 96%... so keep this in mind as you try different configurations.)
I've found that I got the best current flow (1800mA) using the Samsung USB3 cable, connected to a powered USB3 hub's charging port (no data, just power). This would charge our 3200 mAH battery from 0 - 100% in about 2 hours. When I swapped in a cheap Amazon cable (CableMatters brand)... the current flow dropped to about 800mA... or 4 hours. I emailed CableMatters, and they confirmed that it's a design issue, and that the wires are thin. They were pretty plain about admitting it... and then told me to return the cables to Amazon.
I'm posting all of this useful information not only to be helpful... but also to ask for help. Has anyone found a suitable replacement for the OEM cable? I'm looking for a charging cable... I'm looking for thicker-gauge wires capable of sustaining high current flow.

If you are not getting 3.0 speeds then it's not a 3.0 cable. There are many fakes on ebay and amazon.
Only buy Amazon Basics or Samsung branded cables sold by Amazon OR Samsung.

My pleasure! I have a bluetooth keyboard case. I mostly use it for flash drives and it charges while in use. I also have those devices plugged into my firesticks at all times so I can transfer video files easier and never had a problem

Thanks for the confirmation. I had been using this cable (https://www.amazon.com/Tendak-Micro...07828&sr=1-2-spons&keywords=otg+y+cable&psc=1) for my Nexus 7 I had installed in my dash, and for some reason it just doesn't work with my HD 8. Even with the USB DAC not connected, the cable registers power, charges for about 30 seconds, then says it's not connected to power anymore. don't have this issue with the Nexus, or with any of my other power cables, but that's the only OTG angle cable I have.
I'll try the one you use, but I'll have to use a Micro USB angled extension to make it fit in the dash. Unless someone else knows of an OTG y cable with an angled plug that actually works for the HD 8?
Update: I've bought two additional otg cables from Amazon, and one will work for the usb device, but doesn't charge the tablet, the other charges the tablet, but won't work for the usb device. After testing both of these several times, they both started to have the same behavior as my other one, it shows charging for a few seconds, then stops, but continues to power the usb device. If I connect a normal power cable it will stay in "fully charged" mode forever and Automate reports power is connected. I'm starting to get really frustrated. I'm pretty sure it is actually charging, because when I left it connected like that for an hour, it never moved from 85%, but then as soon as I plugged in a normal charging cable it started "charging" at about 6% per minute, and said 100% within 3 minutes. Not even a QC 3.0 can do that. I'm so confused.
