[Q] Downgrade 4.4.2 to 4.3 Galaxy S4? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone help me please? I've never had an problems upgrading or downgrading my old Galaxy S2. I got a Galaxy S4 last year and it was running perfectly.
A couple of days ago, I was backing my phone up through Kies and it said an update was available. I didn't use Kies to update my phone though as I wanted to back up my data first. I disconnected from the laptop and did an OTA upgrade.
Huge mistake!
Since the upgrade, my phone keeps locking up/freezing. The gallery app freezes constantly. If I try to attach a photo to a Fabecook post, it freezes my phone and in all cases, the only way out is to restart my phone.
This update has left my phone worse than useless. I can't do anything on it without it freezing.
I've tried factory reset quite a few times. I've wiped cache partition a few times. I've taken the SD card out. Nothing works.
I've read that the new bootloader renders it impossible to downgrade.
If I find an official 4.3 Jellybean firmware, will I be able to revert back to Jellybean by flashing it through Odin?
Otherwise, I'm stuck with a phone that no longer works.

If you flashed your 4.3 will activate Knox reading your warranty and your phone will now be invalid
4.4.2 is very good for me
Obviously when you have something wrong

Does this mean I'm stuck on 4.4.2? I really want to go back to 4.3 as that was stable.
Do you know anyway to fix it please? I use my phone constantly for work. I can't use it as it is.

You can go back to 4.3 but you will lose your warranty as I told you
4.3 It is possible with custom kernel or full custom rom

So it's possible to download original 4.3 firmware from Sammobile or somewhere else and flash that? I'm scared of bricking my phone.

If you flash stock ROM by Sammobile or Samsung Updates
you have problems with the modem, Wi Fi,calls
You can avoid these problems as flashing custom kernel

Thank you all.
I think I've fixed the problem without having to downgrade.
First of all I formatted the SD card, I switched my phone off, removed the SD card and restarted it. Then I did a couple of factory resets, turned the phone back off and reinserted the SD card.
I think with it having a complete wipe of everything, it fixed the problems with the phone lagging and freezing constantly.
So far, so good.

S4 Random reboots!

Just bought a new S4 GT-I9505, for some reason it just randomly reboots! It did it 5 times in 10 hours. I tried resetting it to factory in case the apps I had installed were causing it. I don't think they were because as soon as it switched on again after being reset it rebooted after about 5 minutes.
Any ideas?
Could it just be firmware related and I have to wait for an update? Or is it hardware?
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk 2
Do you have a microSD card in the device? If so, what kind?
Are your SIM-card properly placed into the device?
It's a 8gb San disk ultra micro sd and I have just removed and inserted it and my sim. Both are fitted correctly.
Anyone?
I'm assuming you are running stock (not rooted etc). Are you using the latest firmware? Have you checked for a system update?

Stock, yes. I actually restored through kies so am fully up to date. Checked for an ota to be on the safe side though and nothing.
It has only rebooted once since 9am this morning so it's improved on yesterday!
I had the exact same problem with my s3.
New or of box it rebooted randomly and always when
i stayed the programs first time.
I returned it and got a new. That is what i recommend.
Same thing happens to me.

Are you sending yours back?
if it stays on download mode try to flash a fresh stock firmware for i9505.. you can it from samfirmware.com.. it could help if it is due to a software issue,, otherwise its going to be a hardware issue..
did you try "wipe cache partition"?? sometimes it fixes some problem if it does not return, that s what i did with my reboot problem while playing video.
I'm having the same problem I cleaned cache several times and installed the cmw recovery again. Any ideas?
Thanks

[Q] New S4, bootloop, do I have hardware problem?

Got my S4 4 days ago sprint 4.2.2 MF9 and rooted using odin 1.85, CF-Autoroot by chainfire (CF-Auto-Root-jfltespr-jfltespr-sphl720), CWM flash, then MF9 Odexed hotspot mod (MD5: b1f54ecf82719255ff39eb88d0095ccd). All went well with no error's or issue's, so I did same on 2nd new S4 - same 4.2.2 MF9 for my wife. Made CWM images of both on SD cards. Installed link2sd and foldermount, did nothing else but move movable apk's to SD with link to SD, never used foldermount (yet).
4 day's later my phone froze while texting and re-booted, froze while making a phone call 5 minutes later and re-booted (by itself). After about 6 re-boots it failed to boot and went into a boot loop, making it to the Sprint screen at first and then only to the Samsung logo screen upon subsequent re-boots. Removed battery after the 2nd re-boot (early on), and tried leaving it out for 10 minutes and then half an hour after 6 or 7 re-boot's - no change. Tried restoring from CWM image, showed success but same boot loop. Even tried image from other S4, same results.
Read as many posts as I could, and after study re-flashed stock recovery and stock firmware. Phone still will not boot, but is stuck in boot loop, now with stock recoevry. Other phone with same done to it, same programs (apk's), all exaclty the same is fine. Is it possible that the phone has a hardware problem?! Since I rooted I have 'Custom' now in Download mode so am afraid to take it back for replacement and can't get to boot so triangle away is not possible. Any suggestions, or have I just lost?! Need a phone for work, so don't have much time to play with it, have tried for 2 days now to remedy - but very...well upset :crying: Any thoughts or suggestions?! Thank you!

If doesn't work I suggest to try the one click mf9. You can find it on development section and do a factory reset after. Also that should bring Odin status to normal. It did for me.

Yes, I neglected to include that I tried wiping cache first, then re-boot attempt, then cleared cache and factory reset, then tried to boot, then wiped cache and factory reset followed by CWM recovery then boot attempt, then cleared cache, re-boot attempt, then all over again and flashed stock - all with no change - boot loop prevailed. What troubles me is that with no other changes the phone froze and re-booted on stock firmware?? And weirder still that once it re-booted the first time it stayed alive for 5 minutes, then 2 minutes, then less than 1, to 'that's all folks' and continued to decrease how far it even went in boot attempt. To the 'slightly informed' like me that seems strange - that's why I was wondering if it could be a hardware failure causing ROM or RAM to be corrupted further with each boot attempt - or - with time 'on'.??
Will try one click mf9 and post back

I had not tried that - put myself under the assumption that is was the same as what I had done 'manually' with oden so didn't also try that. With your suggestion I will however - what have I got to loose at this point?! Will post back with results - have to wait until later, meetings call
Downloading it from rwilco12 in the meantime, both rooted no data restore and stock factory restore versions. I will obviously try the stock factory version first as I have wiped already and have no data to loose.

This is why when you get new phones always test them out on their full capacity for a week or so. So that you know you dont have a defective device.

I am actually sure it was on 4.2.2 the day it died - still had the notification nag that update was downloaded. I was going to look for how to remove that 'nagging' notification but hadn't yet. Since I rooted the day I got it and installed CWM any OTA update (4.3) should have failed even 'if' I accidently hit the 'system update downloaded' prompt on my notifications screen, which I didn't. The phone had been on for about 4 hours when it first locked and re-booted while texting - and had it updated it would have had to re-boot which I think I would have heard/seen/witnessed some kind of evidence that it had. I think you are going in a good direction though, looking at all possibilities. I know from root checker it rooted successfully and since I made a CWM backup I know stock recovery was gone - so very unlikely 4.3 found it's way in.
Have you tried to boot without the micro SD card installed? The card might have corrupted after you used foldermount and now the phone would t boot.

No, I only installed but never opened or set up folder mount so that never even crossed my mind. I just got home and have a few things to try - and I think the first and simplest is removing the SD card! OK, tried that to no avail - boot loop get's to samsung logo and repeats. Tried to clear cache and factory reset with card removed and tried again after battery removal for 2 minutes. Same situation - nothing has changed. Will try 1 step restore next. Downloaded on my laptop but had to leave that with a co-worker for data aquisition project - have to download again here at home.
This is off track, but I have never asked for help and//or participated in a forum like this before. I am happily suprised by the intelligent, thoughtful responses I have recieved so far. Didn't expect anything, but am glad I asked - and even though I am still 'stuck' I have had incredibly good input into potential resolutions for this issue. Thank you all for the assistance so far
The best thing for you to do at this point is to odin a full tar and do a factory reset. To make sure you load the correct one we need to confirm your version. Enter download mode by holding volume down and power. Once it loads, select volume up to enter download mode. The should be a bunch of text lines in the upper left. Look for a line that says knox warranty. If you have that line you are on the mja update. If you don't have that line than you are on mf9. Goto sammobile.com and download the full mf9 tar file through odin and it should return you to full stock unrooted. You may need to do a factory reset in the stock recovery if it doesn't boot all the way. If you do have the knox warranty line than your phone updated to MJA and you need to install that tar instead. Good luck.

Verified through download mode - no Knox line present

Didn't know that line would appear on MJA, but as suspected that line is not in download mode screen's top left verbiage so that gives me confirmation that device didn't sneek from mf9 to MJA.
Late last night I tried both rooted no data restore and stock factory restore 1 click versions from rwilco12. Both appeared to go without a hitch and still after flash and clear cache and factory reset neither allowed the phone to go past the Samsung logo screen. I even tried removing the battery and replaced with that from my wife's S4 to rule out any weird voltage induced issue, but no luck.
I am downloading the L720VPUAMF9_L720SPTAMF9_SPR.zip from sammobile per your suggestion and will give that a whirl. I borrowed a cell phone from a friend who has an extra month of contract with another carrier he is leaving - so actually have a phone to use during this 'downtime' for emergencies - but am begining to wish I had kept my old EVO 3D which never missed a beat. Okay, not really - I like my wifes functioning S4 so far, and her has been fine. I don't even want to think about how stressed I would be right now if it had been her phone that took the dump instead of mine! She simply wants to turn it on and have it work and only appreciates any modifications when every now and then she uses something in front of one of her friends who comments 'cool' I wish I could have/do that with my phone (like hotspot on the boat to a kids tablet).
No luck - bricked or dead phone...

Downloaded and tried L720VPUAMF9_L720SPTAMF9_SPR.zip from sammobile. Odin process went flawlessly as always, no errors, started process after clear cache and factory reset - followed by battery removal for 10 minutes, then turned on phone directly into download mode and odin''d. Re-boot revealed same behavior, tried clearing cache and factory reset again, then battery removal, no luck - looks like I have an unrecoverable phone :crying: At this point I have samsung recovery and firmware so it's going back. I will give my replacement a good week to wring itself our before trying anything with it. On a positive note, my wife's S4 which was an exact replica of this unit continues without missing a beat. This gives me some confidence that it wasn't CF root process or CWM recovery that caused this issue. I am still very nervous going forward but after 6 phones and 3 tablets successfully rooted with custom recovery and no other issues over the last 2 1/2 years i would like to think this really was a hardware failure.

I haven't tried this and not sure of the possibility of it working but if you could establish a connection via fastboot or download mode to a computer running adb you could be able to pull the log from dev/log/ and see exactly what is going wrong.

At that time I guess I will use CF root and CWM only because that's what I have used on my wife's without issue...have to say I am quite nervous after what happened, mostly because I don't have a solid idea of what in the world happened!...I see many are using Phil's touch but don't see any reason to try something different based on my 'issue'. No garantee, but I had rooted mine before it went haywire and bootlooped. When I took it in they had the phone for 15 minutes in the back out of my site - expect they went into download mode and could see it was not original (rooted) but replaced it anyway without any fanfare. BTW, after 3 weeks with the new device I rooted it as before - this time using TWRP becouse I had recently helped a friend root a tablet and used TWRP recovery - liked it so... In any case, I have had my rooted S4 (#2) running without issue ever since.

[Q] Galaxy S4 restarts every 10 minutes

Well for starters, high everyone!
I have an issue with my S4 and I've searched all over but none of what has been recommended helps.
The issue I have is that my phone will restart about every 10 minutes (give or take). I used Reboot Logger to determine this. The phone only restarts when it is idle. It WILL NOT restart if I am using it (screen is on). The weird part is that it doesn't even go through the whole reboot sequence. The screen will stay black the entire time. The notification button pulses and the home buttons will light up like it was restarting though.
I had a bad battery and had it replaced with a stock Samsung battery. I've tried pulling the SD card, pulling the battery for 10 minutes, pulling the battery while the phone is on, and I've performed two factory resets.
The one thing I have noticed is that, after performing the factory reset, I get an "error" under the little android dude. This also happens if I do a cache wipe.
My model is the SPH-L720 running on android v4.3. The phone has never been rooted and there are no software or firmware updates that are found.
I was beginning to think that this was a hardware issue but the consistency in reboot intervals makes me believe otherwise. At this point I'm at a loss. I rooted my old phone but my experience in that area is very limited. I have read that the cache partition is bad from the factory on some of these (hence the error message) so I was thinking about rooting the phone and trying to use a good cache partition, but that's the only other option I could think of.
sounds like a voltage prob....or mem prob... id redownload a new rom..wipe wipe wipe..reinstall and that should fix it

Insufficient voltage at idle was my first thought too, but if you haven't undervolted (since you aren't even rooted), that seems less likely. If I were you, I'd root the phone so I could do more to figure things out. Maybe try bumping up the voltage a little on the lower clock speeds.
Ok, first of all, do not root your phone. As you admitted yourself, you have limited experience in this area, and there is nothing that rooting will do for you. Not to mention, if you think you have a bad cache partition, you don't need root to fix it. Your phone is stock, running the stock kernel, there is no reason to suspect voltage issues that are not hardware related. If you root the phone, you will likely trip KNOX, and void your warranty.
My personal opinion is that your phone has a hardware problem. If you want to truly start over, either recover your phone through KIES, or better yet, download and flash via ODIN a stock MK2 ROM from this forum. Since this is a stock, signed ROM, you will not trip KNOX, and it will rewrite every partition properly on it's own. This is all assuming you don't have a hardware problem. But do not go ahead and try to fix anything yourself besides what I mentioned. You will not succeed, and likely lose your warranty in the process.
Edit: did you buy this phone new or used? If you bought it used, more than likely somebody ruined it for you. And more than likely, you can fix it. If this was a new device, more than likely it will be a warranty issue. That's why you shouldn't do anything to void the warranty.
If you're going to use odin for anything, just make sure you follow someone's directions step by step. Otherwise very bad things can happen.
im also having a slightly similar problem
Problem : The screen after a sleight amount of time of being on, or sometimes instantly when opening the lockscreen it freezes for 10-15 sec then shoots black lines across it, then reboots.
Things ive tried :
1. Installing a new rom ( from AOKP 4.4 and Triforce 4.3)
2. Changing modem (from MJA, MK2, NAE)
3. Changing the type
of Gapps i was using. (4.3 gapps for triforce, aokp 4.4 gapps, and pa gapps)
Current Phone Info:
Rom: aokp_jfltespr_kitkat_nightly_2014-02-08
Modem/Firmware: NAE
Gapps: Pa.gapps 4.4.x
Let me know if you need anything more! plz!
I'll look into Odin before I root. The phone was also purchased new. I spent most of today monkeying around with different settings to see if I could trigger the issue as well. As it turns out, the phone will only restart at idle if it's plugged into the charger, or the wifi is on. If wifi is off and it's not plugged in it's fine. I am also using the stock Samsung charger that came with the phone. Again though, if I'm actively using the phone it doesn't happen (charging or connected to wifi). I did turn the phone off earlier to charge it but would keep freezing at the sprint logo upon boot up. I thought it was bricked for a second... I wiped the cache (didn't do a factory reset) and that fixed it, but now I have that stupid issue where videos won't play on wifi, only on 4G or 3G. It's an issue I thought I had solved.
Le sigh. This is frustrating. The Odin option is looking to be my best bet it seems.

Since you are running a custom source-built ROM, first thing to do would be to ODIN a stock ROM. If the problems go away, you have your answer. If not, this would likely be a warranty issue. Of course you tripped KNOX most likely already.

Alright I'm a little confused as to what exactly I should be using. I found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575470
which is a stock ROM. Although I also found this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2259513&highlight=odin
which is the stock firmware.
Which one do I use, or do I use both of them?

Neither. Use this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2601443
Follow instructions in the thread. This is a completely stock rom with no root or mods and will not trip the Knox bootloader. If you flash anything other than this, including custom recovery, cf autoroot, etc, you will void your warranty.
rebooting
i had this problem once and it was related to a corrupt file on my sdcard believe it or not. there are Defraggers out there for your android file system and internal SD card but your Ext sc you would have to do on your PC. it worked for me. the one i used is called CLEAN i got it off amazon app store.

That solved my problem, thank you! I spent the last couple days testing it just to be sure I wouldn't be crying wolf. The phone has yet to restart on me even while charging or using wifi. The error message I would receive after a cache wipe or factory reset went away as well. It makes me wonder if the bad partition was what caused my old battery to fail.

Great, I am glad it worked out, and hopefully your problem is resolved. I doubt that your old battery failed due to a bad partition, and I have to wonder how your partition got messed up in the first place, but that's just a curiosity and is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Just remember that if you decide to root, cf_autoroot works but will trip the KNOX bootloader and potentially void your warranty.

[Q] Phone on 4.4.2 won't work properly until 2 minutes after boot

Hi, going to make it short:
Whenever I start my phone, it takes 2 minutes for sound, wifi, widgets and whatnot to properly work. This only happened after I updated to KitKat (OTA). What could be wrong?
It's not that big of a problem, but it's weird how updating caused it.
If it matters, I had the leaked 4.4.2 ROM for AT&T and used ted77usa's 4.3 ROM so I could update to the official 4.4.2. (thanks, ted!)
long time to boot

If you have an external SD card installed it seems to take longer to boot initially in order to read the card for some reason. As long as it becomes normal after about two minutes, it should be ok. I've rarely had to reboot since installing the official kitkat update.

That's really weird. Hope that gets patched soon...
Thanks
I am running Danvh's kitkat rom with a sd card and I can make a call right after the phone comes off the boot screen. I would try booting it without the sd card and see if that makes a difference....

Note 3 lolipop problem

Hi to everyone,
I have some problems with my SM-N9005 I will explain everything from beginning what I did so you can have a clear picture. I had stock 4.4.2 rom when I bought my phone but I am a app freak so I had to do root actually my friend did it using odin because I am not so good with android knowledge. That was almost 2 years ago and with 4.4.2 I had no problems. Using camera, recording, wifi everything worked great. I have fastest class San Disk 64 GB memory card and I set camera video to save directly on it and it worked without any problems. This past month my phone started to be slow because of 2 years junk and using so I decided to put latest custom rom (I think 5.1.x something) but my friend was afraid if we dont put good rom that we will brick my phone so he told me to do a reset factory defaults and the phone will be unrooted and then go to software update option and update it to 5.0. I couldn't do that because it reported error phone changed or something like it was rooted but it was not. Lucky for me before root we did cwm backup of my phone so my friend restored backup and then we tried again software update again but still same error phone is changed (I was hundred precent sure that phone is unrooted but still no luck). Then we decided to install Kies and do firmware upgrade from options tab and it worked. It was 1.3 Gb update and kies showed that it is 5.0 and last firmware version for note 3. So I am using phone for few days now but I noticed few problems. Everytime I restart phone it forgets all wifi passwords and also when I come home I meen when I change ruter same story. Today I wanted to talk a picture and when I took a picture and go to gallery to see it (from camera up left corner see last image) phone restarted and when I wanted to record a video it said recording failed and then it restarts every time.Everything else is working great, phone is fast, maybe battery drains faster than on 4.4.2 but it is not a big problem for me. Sorry for my english if I have some mistakes. Can you help me please with these 2 issues?
??
Anyone please?
Did you try with a factory reset ?https://www.androidpit.com/factory-reset-note-3
You could possibly try flashing the stock android 5.0 with odin, that should be the best way of making sure everything is installed properly unless anyone thinks that would be a bad idea.
Chris
I tried factory reset and same story, ok I will try with odin I will go to see my friend in few days and then I will post results
So I solved it by:
Using Odin 3.11.1
I have already tried Factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, flashed the latest stock Lolipop or older lollipop with ODin and nothing solved the problem.
So I tried to flash the latest stock lolipop with Odin and marking checked (Auto Reboot , F. Reset Time , Phone EFS clear, Phone Bootloader update).
I suspect that the Phone EFS clear did the trick. It's function is related to the modem and radio of the phone. And clearly the modem has a problem here.
I hope this will help anybody out there having this issue.
This problem happened after trying to flash lollipop using FlashFire app to reserve the root that I had in my previos Android KK 4.4.2.
