Could you share the experience of using the Galaxy Tab as a phone?
The tablet will be released later this month in Brazil and I am strongly inclined to buy one. I have an HTC HD2, but I am attracted by a 7''screen Galaxy. But I really don't want to carry two gadgets in my bag and so I am wondering about using the tablet as a phone too.
In particular I'm not interested in hands-free calls or videoconferencing. I wonder how practical it is to use the bluetooth headset. It stays on all the time, paired with the phone? How well is the battery on the tablet in this configuration? If you take the headset away from the tablet lose the connection, it is restored automatically when it comes within range of bluetooth again?
And what about using it close to your face upside down like a normal phone, as someone suggested lowering the volume and using it close to your ear.

The Galaxy Tab works great as a "speaker phone". I've been using it for the past week and have realized that I don't need my N1 anymore. I'm going to pair my Bluetooth headset to it so that I don't look so stupid in public talking to a tablet. Reception on the Tab and speaker quality are both better than my N1.
Very happy using it as my work device. I still prefer to carry the N1 on the weekends because it fits in my pocket without bulging out.
The Tab battery lasts longer than my N1 battery, so I'm very happy carrying it all day with WIFI and Bluetooth on. The screen is what really kills battery life. I find myself using the Tab more than my cell phone because its actually taking usage time away from my laptop. I can carry the Tab and comfortably reply e-mail and read online content without being tied to a desk. So I still run out of battery at days end, however I'm getting much more use out of it than my N1.
Make sure you pickup a version that has the phone features. US models do not have Phone supported. I got a Asia version and it is working great on AT&T in US. I'm able to get online with the 2100 band.

I have been using the tab as a phone for over a week now I can say its a joy. On the other hand you will have to carry your bluetooth headset or ear phones with you at all times... If you forget them and need to make a 'private' call its not gonna happen with the speaker phone ha..
The size doesnt bother me as it slips in my back pocket when on the phone.. I would always have a spare phone thats worth about 20 quid just for weekend in the clubs and partying and stuff like that
I've been using Tab as my work phone a couple of weeks.
It fits in my trousers hip pocket, no problem. But it weights 380 g, which is something to notice. (If I carry my Galaxy S in my pocket, i don't feel it, it is so light and flat.)
I use also a Nokia BH-900 bluetooth headset, works well with Tab. However, if I walk away from the bluetooth range, I have to reboot headset or toggle bluetooth off/on from Tab to get pairing again.
Sometimes I use Tab as hands free speakerphone, it works too. I don't say better than other phones but ok. In fact Galaxy S has more volume and better voice quality, if compared.
The best thing about Tab is big screen, it is a delight to read emails. And battery lasts a couple of days.
I have been using the galaxy tab for the past week as a phone and it has been a great experience. Carrying a headset is a must for private calls. I use plantronics discover 975 headset and it works. Also 3g video call works great. Great work phone cause if u have paired it with a headset there is a button to switch it back to speaker phone and in a room the speaker is loud and clear for a small group to hear.
Skype on 3g does not work with bluetooth so to talk on skype privately u need the headset supplied with it. I tried using the headset that comes with iphone and there is sound but the mic does not work. The nexus one headset works well. I have also tried tango application and it does not work with the camera but there is sound for the galaxy tab.
Overall a good mobile device.

i've been using it for almost 2 weeks as a phone with the blueant q2 headset.
i come from the hd2 too and i cant say i regret the switch...
just need to get used to how u wanna deal with it on a everday basis, but to me it's a full replacement for a "normal" phone.
just a matter of gettin used to it

Hi, I am using my Tab for 2 weeks now as an everyday phone and all. I used the Giorgio Armani wm device before and I am very happy with the Tab.
I used to put the WM phone in a special pocket of my purse, but that doesn't work!
As a woman I had to shop for a new handbag because I can't put the Tab in any pocket! Just waiting for a nice case to arrive and then check whether my device will fit in the bag I have my eyes on. I am using a bluetooth Iqua slim (one of my male colleagues thought it looked "nerdy", so?) and am very happy with it. You really can't use it as a phone without a headset, because the sound is very loud. I work in a room with 8 other people, so I have to keep them in mind.
All in all very good reception, even with 3G where the Giorgio Armani could not keep the phone connection active at my work.
At home I don't use the bluetooth headset, but I leave the room when my partner is sitting next to me on the couch
I know that at the moment this isn't possible, but does anyone know if there is work being done on the Android bluetooth stack to enable a tablet to be used as a bluetooth hands-free device? A bit of searching shows that it is a regularly requested feature but I can't seem to find any info on any developers who are definitively working on this (except for one little questionable nugget that stated that the CM developers were playing with Bluetooth. Hardly enough to go on.).
I want to incorporate a Nexus 7 into my 370Z as a carpc but the lack of being able to integrate phone features is holding me back. Using data apps like grooveip are a no go for me as data connections around here aren't reliable enough for consistent daily use. Thanks in advance for any info.
I'm not to sure of what your asking, but if you wanna make calls from your tablet using BT this app allows you to do that as well as send SMS and MMS from it https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.apdroid.tabtalk hope that helps and is what you mean

I appreciate the suggestion but I don't think this will work. What I would like to do is mount my tablet in my car and use it as a front end for my phone to make/take calls the way an OEM bluetooth car system would normally work. My understanding is that your tablet must be paired as a hands free device, which android tablets currently don't do. I looked at Tablet Talk but when using that app from what I can gather when you accept a call on the tablet it actually activates the call on your handset. Ultimately I want to use the tablet as a hands free solution as I drive stick and holding my phone to my ear while driving is a no-no.
In the past I've used bt headsets but I lose them constantly and frankly I'm tired of replacing them. Oh well.

Thanks. I'll thinking I'll probably go the route of a more traditional carpc for now, but if and when this becomes a feature you can take advantage of with android tablets I'll have to reevaluate the situation.

This would be a great extension or compliment to the various apps that let you send/receive SMSs from your tablet via your phone. If I could at least receive/answer calls too, I could leave the phone elsewhere at home.
Just to let you know I've contacted parrot and garmin with regards to something like this.
I want a solution where I can make my nexus 7 a full media center with DAB radio and a good sat nav without needing a cellular link and hands free for my phone which includes the voice commands available through the tablet.
So hopefully they will get back to me and I'll post up here what they say.
Something I haven't solved yet either is getting all the antennae feeds into the nexus, I was thinking of getting a sharks fin antennae and wiring them into a raspberry pi to then blue toothing them into the nexus, I could also then attach a HDD to the pi to use it as a server to.
I want to do it this way so I can take the 7 otu and with me if I wish, rather than having it hard wired in. also if would allow for device upgrade.

I'm thinking of dropping a Nexus 7 in my car but the lack of hands free bluetooth is kind of a deal breaker.
Did anybody ever get this working? I have my Nexus installed in the car, and would love to be able to use it as a speakerphone. I don't need to actually be able to make the calls via the tablet, just need to be able to use it as a basic bluetooth speakerphone / headset type of thing.
It sounds like it should be something fairly simple, but I cannot seem to find much.
I have been wanting this for a long time, I'd love to be able to take my older Android phone and re-purpose it as a car GPS/Internet Radio/Handfree, etc.
I know the Samsung Galaxy player has this functionality, I wonder if any of their devs could help out.

I may be out of line here but try reading about the gmate+ device.
I got one paired with my Nexus 7 32gb right now and currently using it as a phone. I believe there are other similar gadgets out there, as I've done some researches before I actually got mine to work. I have yet to try it with a bluetooth headset paired because I lost mine just on the day when I was about to try it out.
Anyway, one problem here is, the app for the device is currently not updated so there are a lot of things that need tweaking and one major issue for me is the ringtone. As I have posted here before, sine N7 does not have native ringtone, there's no alert tone for incoming calls. As for text messages, the notification alert tone works. I know there's also GPRS for it but haven't tried it out yet.
Try these options...
As far as an option for a Nexus 7 you may want to try a sip dialer like 3cx or linphone or zoiper and establish a free sip account at iptel.org or something. As long as you have wifi or a 3g connection which some tablet have you should be able to make and receive calls, or try ""Blue Fi" from the play store. it may work.

I just got a new Nexus 7 for the same purpose of replacing my vehicles head unit with a tablet.
I am digging into the BT stack since I believe that I should be able to implement (or port) the profile on top of Android 4.3 assuming that the SCO data is available through the raw BT connection. There is an open source HFP implementation on sourceforge for Linux that migh be close enough to do the trick and save a bunch of coding time. It's going to take a while for me to get the time to dive too deeply into this one, but if I succeed or come to the conclusion it can't be done, I will let folks know.

Unfortunately, people saying nexus can't use it. But it's lol...I don't believe nexus7 doesn't support hands free.

I have a Motorola MotoActiv running watch... Features gps tracking for running and biking, MP3 player and Bluetooth... The Bluetooth is mainly used for wireless headphones, but if you have a Motorola Phone, the watch can display text msgs from the phone and you can use the headphones/mic through the watch to take calls. (the idea being that you can leave the phone in a pocket or backpack while you're bike riding, I guess, and still take calls.)
The device runs Android (I'm sure someone's rooted it on here). Maybe that code can be dissected and repurposed for what were all looking for??

Just an update on something I said in my previous post... I was looking at my MotoActiv watch today and it says you have to have an "Android phone" not a Motorola phone as I said in my previous post. So I'm wondering if the phone audio over Bt can be reverse engineered from the Motoactive watch for other android devices.
I actually decided to root my watch today just for the fun of it... it would really make the perfect "Car Head Unit" as it has Android OS, MP3 capabilities, FM Tuner, Bluetooth and Phone audio over Bluetooth built in... if only the screen was larger than 1.5".
Looks like the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 2013 are getting some love in this area with a new custom stack:

So i had an idea today and decided to call my carrier (Cricket). They told me it is possible to purchase an extra sim card and they will program the imei# to match my phone. This will enable me to make and receive calls on my tablet as well as my phone using the same number. Also i will have full access to my data.....problem solved with only 15 dollars. I hope this helps somebody.
Anyone know how this handles incoming text messages. Does the watch vibrate and are texts easy to read in day light or nightime? They seem to get, unlike many reviewers, that one killer app is not having to take your phone out of your pocket to answer calls. That function is also important to anyone bombarded with incoming texts. It is odd that Mota's description makes no mention of text messanging. This is the main way I use my current device, an ancient sony liveview (given new life for reading incoming texts by excellent openliveview software).
Given pricepoint, novel functionality and stylishness clearly deserves its own thread.
I would steer clear of this device. Very, Very limited functionality, poor build quality- my battery was DOA, When I finally reconditioned the battery, it had constant connection issues. Got rid of it quickly.

Guys, this look any other cheap $40-$50 bluetooth bracelet I have seen being sold on ebay, amazon, or chinese retailers (like dx.com) for the last 2-3 years. Its just a bluetooth caller id notifier that vibrates on calls, shows who is calling, and plays music from your phone like a remote bt speaker. It's no different than this $40 feature watch I reviewed here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2435751) but in a bracelet format.
If you ask me, this is no different than all those scams trying to sell already existing products on KS or IGG lol!!! They just got clever and doing it through Groupon to attract more suckers, I mean buyers
This is not a smartwatch, it doesn't show emails or txt msg or anything else, and it only supports BT 2.0.

I wanted to use my new OPO (without an extra SIM card) as a permanent slave to my original phone, and as a permanent fixture on my car as a car-puter for my 2005 Accord. I have to say, I am pretty impressed with the phone, and where I've reached now.
Hardware required:
1) OPO (obviously)
2) Main phone (In my case, my Note 3)
3) Car with Bluetooth Head Unit (depending on usage)
4) Cheap 7$ OBD2 Bluetooth interface from eBay
5) Raspberry Pi + RasPiCam (for backup cam)
Software:
1) Torque for getting data from OBD.
2) Navier HUD Free (For some cool HUD Effects for my car )
3) MapFactor Navigator for free Offline Maps and navigation
4) Google Voice + Spare Phone (didnt want to spend on another phone line)
5) Tablet Remote ()
6) Tasker
7) fqrouter [to be discarded and replaced with WiFi Tether router]
8) Tablet Talk
9) RTSP Player
Modules:
1) Wireless backup camera
I used Raspberry Pi with its camera module to use as a backup camera.
The Pi fetches the video and transmits it as a live RTMP stream using nginx web server. I can then see the stream play on my phone.
I use fqrouter to create a hotspot between OPO and RPi to get the live stream without losing tethered wifi connection with my Note 3.
2) Navigation & Car stuff
MapFactor Navigator free uses OpenStreetMaps to get free navigation to your phone. No need of a separate GPS unit.
Torque has the ability to connect to my car's OBD2 interface. It also has a HUD functionality which I thought was cool
Can also use Navier HUD Free for HUD displaying speed and navigation.
3) Communication
Now, this one was a bit tricky. I wanted it to be connected with my phone. Since I had unlimited 4G LTE data from T-mobile, I had to leverage that somehow. I couldn't just use tethering as tethering isn't unlimited (now found a workaround for that too ). So I wanted to use Wifi Tether only for Google Voice texts and rare phone calls.
Communication involves multiple things:
a) Receive Phone and Text
For this, I used a fine but no-longer-supported app called Tablet Talk. In the future, I'll try to develop something for myself. For now, this one is good. I can send/receive msgs that I get on my main phone (connected via bluetooth) from this one. As for phone calls, Tablet Talk gives a nice notification about who is calling, with the contact's photo and name synced from your phone book.
ISSUE: Tablet talk is meant for tablets. So when used in landscape mode, the answer/reject/speaker button goes below the screen. So I created a tasker profile, which says when I get a call notification on tablet talk, disable screen rotation temporarily. Does the trick
Another issue is that the calls are attended from your phone. i.e. call audio comes from your phone. Simple solution, also connected the phone with my car's bluetooth (another hack made from a broken 20$ Sony MW600 bluetooth headset I found on eBay). So I can answer the call from OPO fixed in car, and talk via car bluetooth, and the phone always stays inside.
b) Music & audio
I have my full music collection on my main phone. I don't want to sync and have duplicates. Thank's to a discovery by @darktranquility18, I realized that the OPO can be used as a media sync when using bluetooth. i.e. It acts as a bluetooth speaker for my main phone. Now, the issue I ran into was that I couldn't change tracks or volume using it directly. So I had to use another software: Tablet Remote. Works like a charm
That's all I have for now. Let me know if you can think of any suggestions, additions or ideas. Open to many more tweaks and hacks. After all, the phone says: Never Settle

I recently began using an 8" LG G Pad as a permanent carputer and couldn't be happier, but I'm going to take a look at some of the options you've detailed here, so thanks for that. I leverage Tasker pretty heavily for automating tasks when the car turns on, turns off, etc.

Simple reason:
I had a 350$ phone that I got for free just lying around as a spare phone. I don't have a spare tablet
So essentially, the only amount I spent just for this is the $7 Bluetooth ODB2 connector.
Also, I didnt want to modify the stock Head Unit. So I have a stand (I added wireless charger for my note 3. Will make OPO wireless charging capable later) on my upper dash which can hold a phone. A tablet will be too big for that and will block my view out of windshield. Once I get some more money, I will get the Metra dash kit and put in a tablet. This setup is what I have for now

Gotcha, certainly makes sense. Good luck with your setup. Having run mine for a few weeks now, can't imagine going back to a stock head unit. Waze, Spotify, Pandora, having my full music library, etc. can't be beat.

Well, its just the OPO on a phone stand on my dash. Mostly it is the use of various software to make it do what I want.
But I guess I CAN put up pics of HUD and a video about the Raspberry Pi Backup module.

It was $2 off when I purchased it. So I got for $6.94
The construction is FLIMSY and the covering breaks easily. But it can be easily fixed with super glue or something. I kept mine open as the LEDs inside give a nice glow-at-night effect to my underdash. I'll show that in video that I'll mostly try to make before this weekend.
What year is your Yaris? All cars after 98 year models (i think) need to have OBD2 compulsorily. It'll mostly be near your steering wheel side underdash, on the left near the fuse box.
It's recent, it's the '10 model. I'll look into it when I go back home after work

So you couldn't sell the phone and get the tablet pocketing the extra $200. I understand if it was a condition of getting it free. Also, you can do most of this with your primary phone and a nice car mount. That lets you use the device when you aren't in the car...

The phone was a gift. So no, wouldn't sell it. Primary phone is used by other people in the car to play music/games etc.
Not a good idea to continuously mount and remove that while I am using navigation and there are people in the car for whom nothing else matters other than playing Candy Crush or facebook .
I do use the device when I am not in the car. As I had mentioned before, it is just hooked to a phone stand/holder.
Also, let me clarify, the main reason for posting it here is since I used the OPO. You can use anything, any phone / tablet. I am not saying you have to use this phone only. I just happen to have a spare one, that's all. I wanted to show one more thing that we can use any phone/any tablet for. It was just an experiment.

The phone was a gift. So no, wouldn't sell it. Primary phone is used by other people in the car to play music/games etc.
Not a good idea to continuously mount and remove that while I am using navigation and there are people in the car for whom nothing else matters other than playing Candy Crush or facebook .
I do use the device when I am not in the car. As I had mentioned before, it is just hooked to a phone stand/holder.
Also, let me clarify, the main reason for posting it here is since I used the OPO. You can use anything, any phone / tablet. I am not saying you have to use this phone only. I just happen to have a spare one, that's all. I wanted to show one more thing that we can use any phone/any tablet for. It was just an experiment.

Sorry, I know this post is old but this is the only reference I could find with someone seemingly having used an OPO (OnePlus One - I hope you mean) successfully with an ELM327 OBD2 Bluetooth adapter. I am having connection issues with my OBD2 adapter and was wondering if you had found a way around these issues...

I have used a couple of OBD2 adapters. The successful one was from OBDlink MX. The hit and mid ones were the cheap ones from China that did not have an auto shut off features.

Hi I thought I would give a quick review of my gv18 smartwatch purchased for £28 from ebay uk seller so here goes.
The item arrived via Argos click and collect which I was very happy with as I don't drive and work 9-5 and hate receiving royal mail undelivered cards.
The watch is packed in a rather generic looking box with aplus watch printed on the box.
Inside I found the watch and a usb cable along with a User manually with a poorly translated english section so I decided to just charge and test the watch. A full charge took just over an hour. Startup was quick a few seconds really and then I was ready to go. I scanned the mediatek app from the qr code but it wouldn't install on my xperia z3 so downloaded and installed via playstore. Within seconds I was receiving all of my notifications. I could even play music through my watch from my phone using xperia z3s throw feature and was pleasantly surprised by the volume and quality of the watch speaker. If I turn off the throw feature I can control the phones audio via the watch through the phones speaker. I promptly tested the calling and was pleased to note that the caller could hear me very clearly as well as me hearing them albeit in a similar way to hands free on my phone but a lot clearer. Sadly I do not believe there is a way to link the watch directly to bluetooth headset which is a shame as this was my main hope for this watch with the expandable memory. Battery life is good at about 2-3 days limited use with backlight on medium. Regarding the phones other features I can say the pedometer works although I'm unsure of the accuracy, texting even with the keyboard options is pretty much pointless due to the size of the keyboard and poor autocorrect word options. Along with this I have noticed that from time to time my bluetotth disconnects and when on a non silent profile rings continuously and on silent the has a verry week vibration. That said though for a nice looking comfortable watch with easily replaceable bands ( about £6 on ebay for 24mm straight end strap, however you will lose nfc) that is a great handsfree device and receives all notifications and for £28 this watch is deffinately worth the money but I'm thinking of looking at the k8 or s8 now for gps and hope of bluetooth headset when free of phone. UPDATE I have now established that you use bluetooth dialler app to use bluetooth headset however with one headset I use connection strength is almost non existent as unless the phone is touching the headset it disconnects and now with my boudoir earphones I get a connection but with wrist at waist I get drop outs both headsets have good range when paired with my phone.

How long is the strap that comes with it?
I just ordered one, since I use a waterproof zip bag for my phone when hiking.
If you still need to know I will measure at some point.
I got the watch, but theres no screw on the back of the gv18 case.
I can see a small circle in the plastic, but not cutout.
in softweare the build time is 24-7-2015. Managed to connect phone and a bt headset to play music. But will probably not use that option all that much.
Mine didn't have the screw either I'm wondering if bluetooth connection is a bit ropey due to changing to metal strap.
well, I tested the bluetooth quicly with sonyericsson mw600 headset. I tried dialing with the mw600 inside the jacket and it seemed to work. Just a quick test over lets say 1m distance.
I am thinking of putting some cling film on it or something else for water\moisture protection when hiking.
GV18 or DZ09? which one is better? Which one do you prefer?
What about internet connection? when i have sim in watch, can i connect to internet using phone?
or when i have sim in phone, can i connect to internet using watches?
Couldn't get sim card working
I tried my phone's sim card in the watch, found AT&T's network configuration page, and attempted to get the watch connected. After many unsuccessful attempts, I gave up. Theoretically, the watch gives you a browser, facebook, and whatsapp apps if you're connected with sim card.
just bought it from amazon, will use it primarily to listen to music via bluetooth headphones while jogging. hopefully it works great for my purpose
