My review of the Xperia Z2 Tablet - Xperia Z2 Tablet General

I've put together a review with a video comparing it to the Apple iPad Air. Hope you guys like it.

Thanks! It looks awesome!
If you wanted to do an addendum, is the 3-4 days an expected, or a real-life experience? How does battery life hold up to the expected life when you're doing email, videos, games, etc?
Thanks!
I'm really hurting that the latest news I'm seeing is that it will not be released at all in the USA.
Jeremie

Battery life is my only "concern" as it is noticeably lower than my iPad. That being said, you can still get 2-3 days of standard usage but I think standby battery performance needs to be better. Hopefully Sony will work on it with the firmware that is released.

iPad Air has 8.827 mAh battery vs 6000mAh from z2 tablet, i don't think a firmware update will help alot.

Pencil input?
Hi can you kindly check if the tablet recognize a pencil as input? like how it is possible with the Xperia Z Ultra.
Apparently XperiaBlog is claiming that both Z2 and Tablet Z2 have the same high sensitivity screen as the Ultra and can register input from gloves and styluses/pencils.
Thanks!

Regarding standby battery performance most probably is the same as ever: Out of the box it will be rather bad because too many background services and useless Sony apps are active. Deactivate the Sony BS, let only the really necessary background apps run - standby battery usage will be excellent.

So with LTE on, battery drain is a lot quicker than with Wi-Fi.

Dear Abbas, I know for the Z2 Tablet (and the Z2 phone for that matter), Bravia Engine is replaced by X-Reality. Could you confirm if X-Reality still only affects videos and pictures from the default Sony "Movies" and "Album" apps, and maybe Youtube, or does it apply for everything else which is displayed on screen no matter what (when it is enabled in the settings of course). I really like the X-Reality effect and wish that it would apply for the entire display throughout.
Thanks in advance!

My Z2 phone has a 'Glove Mode' option and I can use pens/pencils/forks to navigate UI (with or without 'glove mode').
However, the Z2 tablet does not! Only skin working.

No support for ntfs file system (sd card or USB drive) which means no hd movies over 4gb, only way is to root and use an app from play store to support ntfs. Hope this answers your question

Actually its better off this way, so that whenever I have to load any media on the card, I dont have to pull out the battery and it would take for ever to reboot.

It was mentioned somewhere that HTC forbids them to review too deeply about the software, only hardware and superficial stuff. guess they are still working out some kinks.
hmm, fishy... no video playback testing, come on...
I was hoping to take good pictures with 5MP camera. Other review says that the camera performs fast and this one the opposite.

damn i really just need one single thing to make me sell my almost new diamond to get this HD monster... video perfomance.... diamond video perfomance SUCKS but if HD handles well with it that screen and resolution would be killer....
but seems no one knows about video perfomance so i better dont put my hopes too high....

I just discovered a major flaw with not having multitouch

I just tried to use a snes emulator on my Xperia and I realize that without mutlitouch you can't press two buttons at the same time for example move and jump.
I think I finally have a reason to go get a Nexus one.

I just tried to use the Desire outside in sun and I realize that without a good TFT screen you can't see much on the AMOLED screen the Desire have when your going to take pictures outside for example.
I think I finally have a reason to go get a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10.
See what i did here?
Spoiler: I have a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 already fyi.
That is certainly a valid reason...Did you think about buying a gaming console?
.
I wonder if the X10 will ever get MT... but even without it, I love mine. The only thing I dont like about mine is that it cant sync facebook contacts like the NX1 and GalaxyS. SE sync didnt work too well for me.

I actually experienced that yesterday with a mate. We were sitting outside with a couple of beers enjoying the sun when he wanted to check the movie schedules for the night. He whipped out his Desire and proceeded to squint and cup his hand for a few minutes in order to see the screen. Finally he gave in and borrowed my X10 to check.
The X10 isn't fantastic in sunlight, no smartphones are, but atleast you can use it outdoors.

Just do like I do, get a Wii remote and get the WiiMote application! You can play SNES better than those multitouch people anyhow!
For those who might wonder, my first reply was just to do the same as the op did to make him see that the Desire isn't any better than the XPERIA X10.
I haven't really tested the Desire outside in sun my self, but i have seen others with it and i have had big problems to see the screen if your outside in much light conditions.
Well actually, if you plan on getting a MT phone do NOT get a nexus one nor a HTC Desire, they're the worst piece of MultiTouch phone you could possibly get, and are just good for pinch & zoom.
Due to the "axis crossover" issue playing a game with unaligned on-screen controls (just like most emulators) is almost impossible.
As for the X10, you can map "A" to the back button, "B" to the Camera button and "L/R" to the volume buttons, then use onscreen for the pad and start/select

If you're talking about syncing pics from Facebook to your phone contacts, I used SyncMyPix and it works great. Just set the pic download size to maximum and you can get pretty good results, and it skips people you've already got pics for. If that's not what you meant, I apologise.
I sync my contacts to Google as I struggle with the SE sync software too. Just have to be careful if you lose your contacts, as syncing them back from Google seems to lose a fair amount of image resolution for the contact images.

No, I don't get your point. Almost all LCD screens don't work well in direct sunlight, the Xperia included.
Anyway, it really concerns me because one of my major reasons for having an Xperia is it's supposed to entertain me, and I really like emulators.

My Thoughts on the Xperia Z after 5 days!

My thoughts so far: (5days)
PROS:
-WATER/DUST RESISTANT NEED I SAY MORE!!!
-Excellent Build! very nice looking and thin
-Wifi is really good (i live in an old house and on the third floor still get good wifi strength)
-5" Screen is really good! When you get great HD wallpapers (zedge or backgrounds HD) it really pops.
-Micro SD slot BIG + (takes 64GB when formatted)
-Good ringtones and notifications
-Strong vibration
-Nice U.I (some lag but switched to NOVA Laucher)
-When combined with Nova Launcher this phone is BEAST!!!
-Sounds nice with headphones on (not as good as my S3 w/ PowerAMP)
-GAMES ARE AWESOME!!! (Sleepy jack,Tapped out Simpsons,Dark Night)
-Thick lanyard hole (ima wear this as a chain lol)
CONS:
-Walkman doesn't read folders it just puts all the albums into one folder
-Lockscreen either you have a swipe OR lock can't have both
-Non removable battery (trade off)
-Can't choose lockscreen wallpaper when pattern is chosen (only in swipe)
-Album puts everything in one folder (i use Quickpic)
-Sony services run in the background (may contribute to battery drainage)
-Blacks are no where as good as Samsung's SAMOLED (on the flip side higher pixel density and colors that pop)
-Speaker on the side WHY!!!
-Android 4.1.2
NEUTRAL:
-Battery has been good so far, time will tell (DS battery saver on slumberer mode + Stamina ON = 3hrs 50mins screentime and 11hrs 30mins for the day 100%-1%)
-Camera first impressions OK need more time with the camera
-Gets dirty really fast
*I then used the screen protectors that came with the XZ and doesn't get dirty with lint anymore just finger prints but, i ordered these protectors: http://dx-box.com/imak-anti-fingerprint-layer-screen-protector-for-sony-xperia-z.html
-PowerAMP doesn't sound as good as Walkman (would rather use Walkman for it's sound but, no folders means a pain to search especially, when you got 45GB worth of music)
*PowerAMP has an option to use the phone's equalizer this is how: Settings>Audio>Advanced Tweaks>MusicFX. Go back to Tone/Vol menu screen you will see the MusicFX toggle on the top left. Long press for options.
Though it has been only 5 days days since i got the phone, overall, I am very happy with this phone! Most of the CONS are software based and in time there would be MOD's,hacks, etc to fix them.Extremely well built phone with a premium feel that's what i wanted! Although, there is one thing i wanted on this phone,a removable battery, but, when you get a water/dust resistant smartphone with a MicroSD slot, it's a sacrifice that i will gladly live with! Still have my S3 got a plan to swap for a s4 when it comes out. Will play with the XZ and s4 and will choose which one to sell.
walkman do read folders! I uploaded my playlists from itunes via Bridge and found playlist in the walkman
and you can change the lockscreen image
Speaker on the side isn't good when holding but is good when the phone is on the table since you can listen and hear very well (lot better than xperia s).

nice review.
The walkman app uses ID3 taggs to create albums. There is even an option to create ID3 tags, don't know if it uses folder names dough.
Album app uses folders if you click on the "my albums" tab you will see the folders (didn't see it at first as well)
I find most of that to mirror my use of the Z. The screen isn't quite as good as the HTC One or the Nexus 4 but it is very very good and razor sharp.
As for the walkman player, I find it much worse quality and volume to poweramp so I use poweramp.
The pattern lock is excellent because it allows you to have your live wallpaper on the lock screen which is awesome for a change
With regards to the removeable battery, every single phone i've ever used which has that, creaked and squeeked due to the back cover coming on and off so i'm not missing the squeeking at all.

1st: Hope of constructive debate, so that people who spend half of months salary on this phone (650eur) get better info and don't blindly thrust posts that say XZ has eye popping colours.
2nd: It was just a question about where the hell OP sees eye popping colours... especially since he actually compared them to amoled.
3rd: I liked the phone, that was my motive for reading a lot about this phone, but as verge review said, it looks better with screen off as did XT.

It would be good to collect initial impressions of the tablet from the early adopters. Please let us know your thoughts.

Fast. Light. Slim. Fantastic screen and stereo speakers.
I thought the original tablet couldn't get much better, but it did!
Just waiting for my noise cancelling headset to arrive this morning so I can test it at work today!

Thanks - how are you finding the speed versus the old tab? Is there a noticeable difference in your real world use (I'm not referring to benchmarks)?

There's an issue with the Xperia Live Wallpaper. With it active, the homescreen micro lags, but then again, it also happens on my Z Ultra so evidently a wallpaper issue.
With a static wallpaper there is a noticeable difference in the operation of the device. Pinch to zoom in Chrome is perfect, I experience micro lags with animations on the Z which aren't apparent on the Z2.
Early indications on the battery life are positive and GTA SA plays flawlessly on full settings with the Z2, but it stutters immensely on the Z.
The design feels even more premium in the hand. Sony has rounded off the edges slightly and given it's weight and thickness, is alot more comfortable to hold for long durations.
Software feels well rounded. There are a few tweaks such as the separate notification tray and quick settings that make it feel more like a tablet (rather than the ugly tray on the Z from 4.2.2+), you can now "Cose All" from the recent apps tray, with multiple small apps open there is an additional option called "Grid" which positions them randomly on the screen, smart back light control and noise cancellation, plus the new lockscreen. Swipe up from the home button there is now "What New" alongside Google Now which is a well designed app which gives you top music, video, apps and games.
The additional of the vibrator for haptic feedback is also pleasing.
Huge improvement with the camera too.

Thanks a lot for your very thorough review. If you don't mind a question, how is the performance in Chrome when scrolling through a image heavy website (something like Google Image search or one of the news sites with lots of pictures)?
Thanks!

I just did a Google search for the word "Google" - the Z2 doesn't stutter, even when the images are loading or haven't fully loaded.
The Z stuttered only when the images where loading. When all images where loaded, both devices where smooth
The Z2 definably has the upper hand.
As another example of the speed. If I open the Play Store and immediately swipe right to bring out the navigation tray. The Z2 is instant and the animation is smooth. The Z lagged and instead of showing the tray, it just appeared out of thin air.
Could you do a system dump for us all? PM me if you need any tutorials and can't find one (it's pretty easy, but you might need help). Just app, priv-app and framework folders needed.

There weren't any headphones in the box. I ordered the Noise Cancelling headphones from Handtec but they didn't show today as expected so it'll be Monday.
@Felimenta97 Not at a PC currently, but I don't see why it would differ from the leaked Z2 dump.

Boot animation, remote control thing, and maybe you have a build with the new media apps (do you?)

Bah. My pre-order is delayed because I ordered the damn case with it.
Wanted it to be protected from the get-go, but it seems if I want the tablet, I could have it this week, but the whole order, with the case, means it's all on back order.
Bggrit.
Man I was all set to order this and just surfing around found a Ipad mini 2 64gb $400. Brand new full warranty no refurbished. My kids have apply stuff not me. I never even looked at Ipad. For ME this little thing has the best battery life of any Android I have ever had. The only reason I got it was I could jailbrake it. Got the 7.06 on it just before they put out 7.1. Why they dont let people just theme and ad widgets I have no clue.
I do have another android (kinda older). Its just I was looking at $499 16 vs $400 64. I can still sell this and make money. I miss the live wall paper yet I always turned it off thinking its sucking battery lol. Then I find out some of the games that had those extra effects that only Nvidia could run. The ipad mini retina has all those effects. Hmm I bet that 801 chip would have no problems running any nvidia THD game.
If the Sony was just cheaper I would have got that. Not here to sell anything. I would rather have the Sony.. just love Android. But just wanted to share....I love this site.
Just got mine.
Initial impressions:
It's so thin and light , it's almost uncanny.
Build quality is OK but the use of plastic feels a bit cheap for a device in this price range.
Way to many useless and unremovable apps for my taste (Facebook and Google+ first come to mind)
Tap does not always register. I often have to tap twice. This is a deal breaker. Does anyone experience the same thing?
The covers for the SD and USB ports look weak.
It also could have used a rotation lock switch .
This is me *****ing otherwise it looks like a great devices except for the part where touch doesn't always register (faulty unit?)
I'll make a system dump (non root) and post it in he development thread this afternoon.
Edit: Grammar

The touch issues could be related to a faulty unit or maybe a not so perfect FW. If it is related to that, could be fixed. I think the first fw of the Tablet Z had the other way around: Too sensitive screen. And really, REALLY thanks about the system dump

I just got mine yesterday, and thought I had a few times with it not registering touches, but upon further testing, I think I was just missing the navigation buttons. I enabled the show touches option in the developer options and they seem to all register for me unless I'm on the very edge, overlapping the bezel. It does seem like the target areas for the navigation buttons are pretty small though and black navigation buttons blend right into the bezel. I'm confident this can all be addressed in firmware/software updates. Hopefully yours is too.
Overall I'm loving it - it's so light! The screen is a fingerprint magnet, but I can live with that since it looks great. The sound is great too - really everything I expected. I didn't order any accessories, but am now thinking the charging dock will be much more convenient than fiddling with the flaps to charge it. I am glad it is waterproof though, so I don't really have to worry about dropping it in the tub or pool.

I'm torn between the Galaxy tab pro 10.1 and the Z2
Can anyone post about their battery life? How is build quality? Any lag moving around the interface?
I agree on that screen issue. It seems like the navigation buttons only work if you completely hit them. If you miss them by a small margin they don't register. That's probably a software thing though. Apart from that.... Wow what a tablet, it's so thin and light. I really really like mine so far.

After playing a bit with it, I have the exact same impressions: the navigation buttons are easily missed. The dead zone around the bezel is too large, and for some reason I often touch a few pixels away from my target. It's definitively not hardware related. But it bugs me, if it stills bugs me a week from now it'll go straight back to Sony.
About the battery life , I charged it to full yesterday afternoon, played with it for about 4 hours in the evening, mostly web and HD vids, It got 70% battery life left. It discharged 1% overnight . Too early to tell but looking good so far.
It feels very snappy. I did have one severe slowdown (once just opening a new tab in Firefox the whole tablet froze for like 10 seconds ) , it never happened since and it running butter smooth.
It's so slim and light that it's quite hard to hold actually. I struggled a bit to find an easy was to hold it with one hand whereas my old Iconia A500 (twice as thick and almost twice as heavy) feels more natural although more straining. Even with two hands the square edges are not comfortable.
I put the Z2 in my Iconia case for the time being, it does not fit perfectly but is much easier to hold.
Aside from the unremovable apps, as always, I'm quite positively surprised with the Sony ROM, it's very pleasant to use.
Nice touches: multi color notification led, front speakers are loud and clear, IR blaster (although the app sucks)
Now all I really want is root access...
Awesome!
They should arrive in Australia next week, looks like I'll have to get one
Please keep dropping thoughts on it when you feel the need!
I'm sure the touch issue will be resolved with an update.
CM11 would be freaking amazing on this!
Review and benchmarking
A Polish site has published a review. Though I don't understand Polish the benchmarking results look very good; this tablet scores top in most, but not in the SunSpider Javascript benchmark where it is outperformed by others. Playing a HD-movie at 55% brightness gave a battery life of 12,5h. For normal usage the battery lasted about 3 days:

I have to test this for a longer time before I can answer on that. I have had it turned off between my test so far, so I don't have a clear picture yet of it. Will update my post when I know more.
I am interested in this watch re i phone version. Will it have a pedometer and what will be the cost?

The version I test here is only for Android. MIMI are saying they are working on a version for iPhone, but they can't say when it is ready. They are aiming for December. The cost is right now unknown, but I believe it will be around the same as this version.

Sorry I missed it but what is the cost of this current version?
On the IP67 test. The International Electrotechnical Commission requirements are 30min/1m. The IEC is the organization that makes the standards for the test/rating, so if it does not meet 30min/1m static immersion test then it can't technically be IP67. Just a heads up.
Thanks for reviewing it.

okay thanks for the info, but here http://aceeca.com/handhelds/ip67 it says
6 Totally protected against dust
7 Protected against the effect of immersion between 15cm and 1m
And if that's the case, it does fill the requirements. As it is water & dust-proof. Can be soaked more than 3 hours in 50cm deep water according to MIMI.

Max 3 days it seems.
looks nice, but also rather huge
and very disappointing to see the exact same crappy companion app
that came with the u8 and all those other clones
i assume you have to have either phone or media audio connected for the watch to work at all?

IEC 60529 (doesn't get any more official than this)
The link you posted is technically incorrect as the lowest point has to be at a depth of 1m. If the object is more than 850cm (can't remember exactly but it's in the pdf) tall then it requires 15cm from the top of the device to the surface of the water.
Clockfaces
Hello,
I just bought this smartwatch and waiting for delivery. Do you know if there will be more clockfaces ?
Btw, 3 days battery sounds good enough for me.

I have this watch almost two weeks now, very nice watch and the design look quality. The things that i notice is that, connection sometime disconnect and you need to connect it by your smartphone not like other models that the watch it self searching for the phone. Heartrate seems accurate. The liveview cam is laggy and not full screen. I hope they implement auto face detection most pics taken is blurry. Qwerty keyboard not a default handwriting is awful very slow. Sometime the watch is autorestarting so you need to pair it again thru you smarphone and open the apps. I hope they could update thebfirmware soon.

Battery is ok for a couple of days, BT connection is stable for me, but also depends on what phone you use and how strong the BT is on the phone. No idea about Lollipop, but I think it would work.
I have a OnePlus One, I owned rwatch m26, the app worked well with kitkat while with lollipop I had to use an alternative apk, SmartWear. Since you bought it there were updates? I found a blog that talks about a new firmware with the voice command, but the site mimi-hk says nothing. However, I think I'll buy, the transreflective display, the ability to watch the time or answer the call with the shake and ip67 are rare on this type of device. On Lightinthebox it's 89 euros + 13 for shipping, I think it's a good price. Thanks for your suggest
