Writing files to the External SD Card after upgrading to android 4.4.2 - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After upgrading to android 4.4.2 on my Samsung Galaxy Note3 I noticed that I was no longer able to write to any location on the external SD card with anything but system apps.
After reading extensively about this problem on the web, I found that I could get around this issue by saving my pictures, music, etc., to a folder in the sub-folder of the Android/Data folder that had the same name as the app, as stored in the .android_secure folder.
So to save edited pictures that I created in my AutoCAD Pixlr-Express app, to my external SD, I created a folder called "com.pixlr.express" and changed the settings of my pixlr-express program, so that it saved to this location.
I then tried this with several other apps, making sure that the sub-folder that i created had exactly the same name as the app in question, and then changed the settings for those apps to save to that new folder... I was very happy to see that this works on all three apps that I tried it on - so this is a fairly simple way to get around the stupid block on writing files to the external SD card, that android 4.4.2 has... at least on the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
Please note that I had to pull the SD card from my phone, and create the aforementioned folders on my main computer, but once the folders are created, there should be no further need to deal with this problem.

And reading files from any where in the SD card is it possible with 4.4.2?

reading from external SD
as far as I can tell that should be doable from any sort of app!

Writing to external SD card in Android 4.4.2
Well actually it works just fine - as long as I write to the correct folder - as mentioned in my thread!

Thanks for this - tried this for office suite and even delete function is working! Are there any downsides to using this, like would the folder be similar to a temporary folder or would it count towards the allocation for android applications?

I just made a rather lengthy bug report on the Samsung US website since I feel they pay closer attention to their American customers. People should report this issue to Samsung more so that it climbs up the priority ladder and has a chance of eventually getting repaired.

Good find OP. If I wasn't rooted I'd definitely give this a go. Now there's a non root solution to fix the apps which haven't been updated.?????

But what about if you uninstall the relative application? On 4.4.2 specifications it seems that all applications folders will be deleted! So we risk to delete user data too!?! Someone with KK could try that?

Hi, this may be a dumb question but how do I know the real name of the app? I mean, AutoCAD Pixlr-Express app turns to be com.pixlr.express. Where did you find this information?

it is just another folder on your external SD - as far as I know!

that part requires a bit of snooping!
that part requires a bit of snooping! but typically your application should have a folder name in the android_secure folder - but as I said in the original posting, this doesn't appear to be a folder when you look at it from a folder viewer on your phone... you have to hook your device up to a computer and look in the android_secure folder from your computer!

I have found that file manager from Google play was able to move my pictures to my extsd card. FX file manager was unable to. Download File Manager and it should help even if not rooted. I know this because I'm not rooted myself. The only other way I was able to move files was by hooking the phone to the pc transferring the files from the internal memory then transferring to the extsd. Hope this helps.

Thanks for this information! I was getting a bit disheartened after changing carriers and being forced off my rooted HTC One M7 to a G3 (which I'm not ready to root yet). I created the folder on the SD Card, but had to go through with the install to the Internal Storage first. Then, still using my Win 7 PC, copied the data from that Internal Folder over to the SD Card, before going into the App, changing its default directory, and then deleting the data from the Internal Storage. For example, on an app called Avare:
Using Windows, created SD Card/Android/data/com.ds.avare
Installed Avare to Internal Storage/Android/data/com.ds.avare
Using Windows - copied all data in Internal Storage/Android/data/com.ds.avare to SD Card/Android/data/com.ds.avare
Opened Avare (the app itself) and changed the default directory to SD Card/Android/data/com.ds.avare
Deleted all data in Internal Storage/Android/data/com.ds.avare
I was then able to download Sectional Charts and Plates right onto the SD Card just fine - so Write access works! Thanks again!

Change /sdcard reference to /Removable?

I am not sure if this is Honeycomb issue or the Asus Eee issue, but in the Asus Eee, my SD card is called /Removable but the internal memory is labeled /Sdcard
This is creating havoc on almost ALL APPS that needs to install LARGE data to SD Card. For example:
- Games: Galaxy Force II, which requires more than 250Mb, by default will download and install the data to the internal memory because it was "looking" for /sdcard. I simply CANNOT MOVE the app to /Removable because the app will then complaint nothing has been downloaded (couldn't find the data in /sdcard, even though it exists but just in /Removable)
- Music: I use iSyncr, which also looks for /sdcard and have the some problem as the above.
- TitaniumBackup: this is the BIGGEST PROBLEM - TB only looks for /sdcard. In TB preferences, I CANNOT change the backup path to /Removable. It insist on /sdcard only. So if my Asus goes kaput, my data is host. I can backup the data and THEN move the files to /Removable, but that means I have to do that EVERYTIME I do backup and even with automatic backup, I have to remind myself to move the backup files MANUALLY to /Removable.
So any apps that requires installation to SD card will look for /sdcard and nothing else.
Anything else I can do about this? My internal memory (that is, /sdcard), is getting filled up really quickly.

I won't comment on the rest as I am not an expert in mount points but, fortunately, you are wrong with regard to TB. When you go into preferences in TB, it tries to detect the backup folder. Don't press Use the current folder or Cancel. Just press the backup key and you can navigate to where you want. Mine is Removable/MicroSD/TB.
I guess we have to wait for some apps to be rewritten for HC.

It's not a Honeycomb problem per se, because vanilla Honeycomb doesn't support SD cards at all. Where a tablet has enabled SD card support, it is vendor specific.
W.r.t to other issues, the post here may help.

Apologies, I should have said the squiggly back (not backup) button when on the screen in your picture. The one on the bottom left of the picture.
Not "backup" as in data backup, the backup key in the lower left corner of the TF, (backup one level)
This works great! Thanks to all!
I think -sooner or later- apps will be updated to take advantage of the external memory storage. I have to hunt for those apps:
* Ebooks: I dropped Alkido for Moon Reader. MoonReader can access the microSD and doesnot import the actual files onto the \SDCARD. I have quite a lot of ebooks.
* Stock Music & Gallery (mobo player also) can access my pics/videos/music on the microSD (tons of MP3s and MP4s)
I have a 32GB microSD almost filled up.
I have a ship-load of games/apps which have data on \SDCARD but they still
can't fill it up yet (~8GB available). So I have no worry about the internal storage. I actually don't need/use that much games/apps.
by the way, I have a 16GB TF with no Dock.
I also HATE to have MicroSD folder outside /sdcard folder.
So, That has an easy fix:
Edit /system/etc/vold.fstab
Replace this line:
Code:
dev_mount microsd /Removable/MicroSD auto /devices/platform/sdhci-tegra.2/mmc_host/mmc1
With this line (as an example):
Code:
dev_mount microsd /sdcard/_MicroSD auto /devices/platform/sdhci-tegra.2/mmc_host/mmc1
Reboot your TF01, and you're done!
EDIT: You could, if you like, to do the same thing on SD card on the dock, and USB devices. Just follow same steps on other lines inside /system/etc/vold.fstab
I used the folder name _MicroSD with the "_" char, since I want it to apear on first lines of Root Explorer. Use any other name you like!
I know this may not be what you are looking for, but I think this is the right thread to share!
With at least 16gb storage, I don't see an issue with having apps use internal memory, and I'll store my media on the mSD card (or even an extra SD card in the dock).

Or USB. Or External Hard Drive
Might check out what I did here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15846640&postcount=44
I didn't bother changing the mount points, but rather "redirected" specific folders inside /sdcard to the same folders inside /removable/MicroSD.
When I had to RMA my tab I did a TB to SD card. When I got it back I tried to restore my previously installed apps which I had to find using restore and browse for the backups. However although it listed them after doing that in the restore section it had NO option to restore the apps. Even though it was listing them. I have since had to reinstall all my apps manually. and have given up on TB. I just do a Nandroid backup now for emergencies.
was totally wracking my brain trying to figure out how to change the mount paths as some programs can't go high enough in the directory structure to switch over to /removable, or in the case of diceplayer you have to specify the path each time you want to browse from sd or internal. Its nice to have them all under /sdcard, thanks a bunch for the solution.

[Q] Deleting SD card files from App

Is is possible to delete files stored in SD card from apps other than stock myfiles app?. I tried HD manager and other file explorer app but no app can delete any file stored in SD card. Am i missing something? (my tab is not rooted and running stock honeycomb).
Do you have a cardreader? If so take out the sd card and try to delete the files you want to delete using your desktop/laptop.
Btw usually you should not need root for deleting files on your sd...
Sympathise with you...
I must admit that it's only in the last few days that I discovered this problem with external SD card file deletion/amendment.
I have looked into this and am quite frankly amazed that such a 'glitch/bug/oversight' could be allowed to find its way into a modern day operating system like Android, or the Samsung Tab OS (not exactly sure which is causing the issue).
Like the first poster in this thread, my Tab is not rooted and I don't really want to root it either. It would appear that there are 'fixes' available - but only for rooted Tabs.
Basically, it seems that the external SD card is READ ONLY when in the Samsung Tab. How ridiculous is that? The stock file manager that comes with the Tab will allow you to delete, rename of amend files on the SD card - but that seems to be the only app that will perform this.
I can kinda live with it - or, more to the point I have got to live with it. The big problem is that any file such as a Word doc, spreadsheet, txt note or even image can only be allowed to reside on the SD card as long as you don't ever want to edit it!! What a crazy situation that is.
For a sophisticated operating system like Android and a sophisticated device like the Tab I feel that this kind of issue should never have been allowed to happen. It's clear that the manufacturers know about the problem which is why they have made a half-way solution with the built-in File Manager. However that doesn't address the problem and places unnecessary restrictions on how you can use the device.
Shame...

I made new word document in Polaris app and save it to SD card. Then, i edited it and save it to SD card again...it worked perfect. Also, i successfully used gallery app to deleted some pictures stored in SD card , same thing as well with stock music player. So, it seems only stock app (like Gallery, music player) have full access to SD card files (write, edit, delete).

Hi,
I have tried this and it indeed works. However, the swap is reset upon reboot and I would have to manually open the app and press the "External > Internal" button.
This is not a major problem, but I find that my sdcard1 has files copied from sdcard0. Using ES File Explorer, I have found that the swap copies folders such as Android, data, Download and WhatsApp etc from sdcard0 to sdcard1.
Interestingly, all these folders are empty, which is great, otherwise this trick would be rendered as redundant.
Just wondering if this phenomenon is normal?
no problem

is normal, when you start the phone charges the internal memory as you normally would and seconds after making the change automatically, this creates the folders but once done change all data is stored in the folders that are in the external microsd memory
I am a bit lost....
1) Am I correct that those in the internal card (sdcard0) will be automatically move to the removable external card (sdcard1)
2) and all the file writing will be performed on sdcard1 instead of sdcard0?
3) do the files stay in sdcard1 when the phone is off or they will be moved back to sdcard0 when the phone is turned off?
4) Any problem when the external card is removed when boot up?
Thanks

thanks a lot - it works for me great now I have a lot of free space for apps.
one of the most annoying thing about XSP is that it have less than 8 GB space for apps.
but now I have 32GB
thanks again
P.S.
one questions - storage menu in settings - shows total space on internal storage 29.71GB - this is ok, but Apps menu in settings shows only 1,9Gb free from around total 6 GB total - this the real internal storage and it is not changed at all.
is this normal and if yes what is the difference from before, because when I put 1 GB more apps the space will be over ?
the apps still in internal memory

applications are stored in the internal memory, but additional game data or applications are those that are stored in the sdcard0 or microsd.
only the application (apk) is stored in the internal memory.
if you had additional data downloaded games or applications before making this change should delete the contents of the folder / storage/sdcard1/android/obb once you've made the switch. Maybe after this have to re-download the additional data but it will be stored in the microsd.
yes it works this way ! thanks a lot.
So it means that, take whasapp as an example:
After the swap, the phone will create a new whasapp folder on external card while the old whasapp folder will remain in internal card as it was?
And if I want to keep the old settings, I will need to manually move the old whasapp folder contents from internal card to external card once?
Yes

Kit Kat Limitation- Make up your mind Google

I have the Note 2014 and the Note 3(AT&T). Both are running Kitkat and both are not rooted. There is no SD card file write restriction on the Note 3. I am free to use ES File Explorer and Rhythm software File Manager and do whatever I want on the external sd card. Both apps can do everything on the SD card that the native My File app can do. But on the Note 10.1 2014, only My Files has free reign over the external sd card. Can't create, can't move, can't copy, can't paste using ES File Explorer or File Manager.
What gives?

You tell me. I have an AT&T N3 and external SD card access works exactly the same way it does on my N10.1-14. In fact, from what I experienced on my N3 I knew in advance exactly what to expect when the N10.1-14 finally received 4.4. My N3 is running the stock official (and only) AT&T 4.4 ROM so if your's is too and grants you universal external SD write privileges it must be super magical.
I use Astro. Here's the error message. It's the same for all non-Samsung apps when they try to write to external SD outside their self-created sandbox.

I'm the other way around. Since I got the note 10.1 2014 after the Kitkat Note 3 (At&t 4.4.2 stock rom), I expected the tablet to work like the phone on Kitkat without restriction.
I just tried Astro and it's a no go. Can't create folder, can't delete files, can't move or paste or do anything on the external sd card. But both rhythm software file manager and es file explorer works just fine on the note 3. Not just at&t note 3 but also Sprint note 3.
I should have add that ADM and tubemate must play in their own sandbox. ADM will only download to internal sd while tubemate can still download to its external sd sand box.
Try ES File explorer and rhythm File manager. I bet it has as much power as the native My Files on the note 3.
So I'm not sure if I'm going crazy or not but I just updated to kit kat through odin from 4.3 and all my stuff stayed the same almost and I don't have any problems with writing to ext SD card with any file manager app. I was expecting to have problems but I don't. I was also expecting my tablet to reset itself but it stayed the same as how I had it. The only things I lost or had problems with where my blacked out apps. I can create folders on any SD card with no problems. Did you try root folder mount to fix your problems.? I did and maybe that's why I'm good to go.

I can create folder on the external sd card using Rhythm software File Manager but I can't move or copy files anywhere on the external sd card. What is root folder mount? Do you mean accessing the root folder using File Manager? Or is that an app? I'm not rooted so Folder Mount(root) is not going to work.

Yeah its a app, I think that it fixes all the problems with kit kat and mounting.I'm rooted so I think That's why I didn't have any problems when I updated to kit kat.Theres also a app called SD fix to fix the problems with ext card but you might have to be rooted for that as well.I think it's in the market so you can check it out to see if you have to be rooted.
kitkat
Just upgraded to kitkat and I can, using my files, create a folder on the external sd card and copy a file from the internal card to the folder on the external sc card. Also the upgrade simply updated all my apps. So I think if you download the rom from sammy then use odin it just updates and you can write to ext card.

My Files is a native Samsung app so there is never a restriction on read write access. The issue is with third party file manager app such as ES File Explorer and Rhythm Software File Manager. They work fine on the Note 3 Kitkat and also on the HTC M8 Kitkat. But they do not work on the Note 10.1 2014.

Interesting. I just installed and tried ES File Explorer on my AT&T N3 and, like you said, it works. My guess is it's something carrier vs. Samsung related. The N10.1-14 is working the way Google intended it with the intentional changes to external storage they (Google) made in 4.4. I haven't seen any one on the international N3 forum saying "hooray, ES File Explorer still works" which is why I say/think what the AT&T N3 is experiencing is the exception vs. the (Samsung) rule. So rather than lament the way storage works on the N10.1-14 celebrate that you dodged a bullet on your N3. I use sync programs that no longer work on either the N3 or N10.1-14 so I've already moved the stuff I need universal access to on to internal storage and as much else as I can to external storage. Thankfully both my devices are 32GB. With My Files and Samsung Link you can move content directly to external storage from the cloud which solves the problem of limited storage when handling uber big files. That's always been my biggest concern. As they say, it is what it is.

Yeah, thank goodness for the native My Files app or else I would roll everything I have back to 4.3. When I did test the Sprint HTC M8, I only tested on the store display which did not have an external sd card. I wonder how it works on HTC Kitkat phone since HTC do not have the Samsung My Files app. No way to create files or move things around on external sd card would be a deal breaker for me no matter how good the phone is.

What he said about being screwed by HTC and Google is right. I want the power and flexibility and user control of Android. If I wanted a dumb down OS and Google telling me what I can't or can't do, I would have stuck with Apple. Google anti-sd card stance is going a bit too far with kitkat handicapping the use of external sd card. Cloud storage is fine but not everybody has unlimited high speed connection. This is not what HTC needs especially since they brought back external sd card that was lacking in the HTC 7. They brought it back and Google handicapped it!
I just tried copying a file to my external sdcard using ES File Explorer on my Verizon N3 and it worked.

Good to hear so the Note 3 on AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon works fine with third party file manager app. But not all apps work. Tubemate and ADM(advanced download manager) are restricted to their sandbox.
This was the deciding factor for me to finally root my Note 10.1 2014. My Sprint Note 2 was rooted almost immediately after buying it, but my plan was to keep the Note 2014 stock and unrooted since it is a much more expensive device and I was a little more worried about the warranty. So whatever nonsense Google was trying to force me into accepting as "just the way it is" with this update (yeah, sure it's for security reasons), it didn't work.
FYI, the very recent Kitkat update on my Sprint note 2 also broke full access to the SD card, but since I suspected it would, I waited to verify that root was easily attainable, updated, re-rooted, and applied the SD fix.
Rumour has it (uber dev ChainFire has been taking about it a lot) that future versions of Android are going to be very difficult ("impossible"???) to root. When/if that happens, if my devices are not supported by the AOSP and/or Cyanogenmod communities, it will be goodbye Android for me. I might as well have a frickin' iPhone.
None of my not rooted Notes running Kitty Kat allow moving to the card with third party apps and my Note 3 is on Sprint. I use My Files now. Devices: Note 3 Sprint, Note 8 and Note 10.1-14. It really sucks.

While file copy and delete with certain file manager apps might work, the real crime with kitkat is when you try to work with files like editing text files or documents with whatever app. It cripples write permissions to 3rd party apps and that is a hugely bad!
My Note3 became SD card crippled after kitkat.
The only way to fix it was to root and run SDfix to get a fully working external SD again.
FU Google! for screwing with external SD in kitkat!
Google and their stealth like slow progression to being like Apple. Goople.
Just thought I'd mention...
...That even though ES File Manager seemed to survive, functionality-wise, to the KK update, its built-in text editor (ES Text Editor, iirc) does not inherit the same abilities. I was trying to edit the platform.xml via every app imaginable that I had, in every possible combination, before I finally gave up and used sdfix. One thing I find truly regrettable is that there really is no built-in, native plain-text editor supplied with our devices; bit of a vicious cycle.
Unlike what seems like the majority of people here though (chuckle), and even though I'm a developer, I've always considered Google 'evil'. While this increasingly maniacial push to get more and more of 'the datas' (via cloud, built-in apps and everything else) wasn't unexpected, I wish I could say this particular move didn't surprise me. I'm a dev and I didn't even know this was coming with KK before I upgraded; they certainly didn't advertise it that I was aware of. I feel bad for the people who got upgraded OTA and had even less of a heads-up than some of us.
It was talked about and I upgrade each device knowing the limitations. The Note 8 is really the only one I readily regret having updated. No performance gained on the 3/8, though the 8 suffers a pen alignment annoyance that is inconvenient. The 10.1-14 has a reduced waking period. Frankly, an upgrade of little value.

mp3 files not showing in music app

Hi,
I have several gigs of music files (mp3) stored in Sd card.
Although I've tried to move them into several different folders I cannot get music apps (google music or samsung music) to list all the music.
I'd like to know if anyone has experienced the same problem and if there is a way to solve it.
Thanks in advance

Mine shows from the micro SD card without problems. You have to give permissions to the music app
Go to settings
Application manager and tap on the music app and permissions and turn it on
make sure storage is selected

Don't know if this will work but I wasn't able to delete any file/folder from sd card before
Eject SD card and copy all files/folders to PC and delete everything and insert SD card back without any file on it
When it recognize and install all system files on it
Reboot device and after that remove SD and copy files back to SD
Reboot and open music app and set new permission

I had this problem with improperly tagged MP3s. The app is looking for unique title metadata within each file. If that particular bit of information is the same or blank for each file, it wont recognize and display them in the app. I use a program called mp3tag (to get it, just google "mp3tag download") to edit the metadata in my MP3s. Download that and open the folder(s) with your MP3s. Check the title column. If those values arent unique, Highlight all (Ctrl+A), go up to the Convert menu, and select "Filename - Tag". That'll automatically copy the filename into the title column and create unique data for each file. Save your changes and try to re-upload to your device and open in the App.
Try reducing the file name of the mp3 file(Make it less than 50 characters ).It worked for my samsung music player.
