[Q] Q: How does the S-View cover work software-wise? Only with Touchwiz? - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How does locking the phone work? If the case is closed i can see through the little window on the case and interact, is that a lockscreen app of some sort? If I open the case, will it simply open to where I was previously, or my home screen of choice (Nova launcher)?
I wanna be a bit more clear on the software side of the workings of the s-view case before purchase. I recently bought my note 3 and updated to 4.4 already.
Thank you.

I used Spigen Slim Armor View and also have original S-View cover, but I dont think I could explain it in details.
I suggest to browse youtube for good overview on how S-View works because only pictures can explain otherwise there will be so many miss assumptions/understading in discussions. , you can post questions on youtube as well to get answer from on hands experience users.

If you close the cover, it will automatically lock but the screen will stay on for a few seconds.
When you open the cover, it will automatically unlock and you will go back to where you where before locking the phone (this can be truned off in the settings so that opening the cover takes you to the lockscreen).
If you press the power button with the cover closed, you will be taken to specialized interface in the window.
It shows you information like time, weather, missed calls, messages, number of steps walked (integrated with S Health).
You can check the missed calls and messages, take photos, control your music and make a note in action memo.
That's about it, I guess.

Alright, thanks for the responses.
My only fear was that the "specialized interface" with the cover closed (with missed calls, messages, weather, etc) is a touchwiz thing, so in other words I would need to use touchwiz as my launcher for it to work.
I guess that's not the case then, and using Nova or any other launcher is not a problem, the special interface still works.

You just need a touchwiz based ROM. Not the launcher itself.

[Q] Android rom question

OK semi stupid question about Android roms. Is there one where you don't have to slide down to answer calls? I keep the phone in my pocket when it rings, I go to answer it most of the time it answers itself. Don't know if there one that has slide left to right like the Iphone or others.
CM7 roms slide left to right to answer, I think it's only Sense and MIUI that slide down to answer, but I could be wrong. But I know that CM7 has the sliding tabs to answer/reject like on the lockscreen.
the easiest way to go about this would be to download a lockscreen app from the market. there is a really great app called lock 2.0 which will allow you to do what you want. also you can add custom sounds if you like. there is also 1 called lockbot pro (what im using now) which has many different lockscreen styles like iphone, hero, eclair, froyo, x10 & galaxy. you can create many different lockscreens by changing the background around and a setting that will go through your default lockscreens you choose so you get a different lockscreen each time..i find it pretty cool. there is a free version as well but not as many features. hope this helps out.

but as far as I can remember, these apps don't change the incoming call screen, which is the real benefit of horizontal slide
i had to re-read that because i wasn't sure what you was talking about at 1st. your 100% right though, i must of missed the part about incoming calls the 1st time i read it.

Simple, Just get a protective case for it or sleeve or something. The screen is capacitive so only responses to touch from your fingers (not pressure but touch) so aslong as there is something covering screen it wont unlock.

as stated earlier CM7 slide left and right, but if you dont want to use CM7 and like the rom your on, get go launcher[FREE], launcher pro, ADW launcher ... i think each has a different answer button
If there is A rom that u like u can use this application to get rid of the slidedown to answer (EZanswer) http://www.4shared.com/file/MhGQjhuO/EZanswer_1400.htm tell me about the result

I'm not sure about your phone, but mine is so responsive that it feels my finger through the protective cover I always demonstrate this to my friends by unlocking my device (whether vertically in android or horizontally in WinMo) through the cover
that's why it's a problem, we either need a horizontal answer app (easy) or get a thicker cover, which makes a barely-pocketable phone impossible to fit in pockets, unless you're one of those who wear baggy pants with huge pockets.
use the pattern unlock screen Miui has loads if different lock screens

Cover Lockscreen for Android

The right apps at the right time
No more fumbling through screens of apps to find the one you’re looking for. Cover learns when and where you use different apps and puts them on your lockscreen for easy access.
What is Cover?
Cover is the fastest way to get to the right apps at the right time. It’s a free app for Android that replaces the lockscreen of your phone, adding shortcuts to your favorite apps.
What does Cover do?
Cover recognizes the places you go: home, work, car, and out. It learns which apps you use where, and puts the right ones on your lockscreen for quick access in each context. It also pays attention to which apps you use during certain hours of the day and days of the week.
Cover lets you quickly peek at apps and jump between them. With Cover’s smart settings, you can specify ringer volumes for each context too. See our demo video for more info.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coverscreen.cover
Just started using this app, thought I'd share.
Missing these important features
1) Camera launch almost always fails ( on my nexus 5 with face recognition lock setup)
2) Does not bubble up apps with notifications to top
3) Does not show next meeting, battery percent and other simple info most other lock screens show ( samsung , htc ..)
4) tap on a app with notifications ( say hangout) can show the notification message ( cover already has access to notification content). swipe will still open the app

How do you get your Xperia to function with a window-based front cover?

I bought one of those cover case with a window in the front (model number SCR46) for my Z5 Premium (Gold, of course), but unlike my friends' Note, when I close the cover, I cannot make the screen turn on. On my friend's note, the part of the screen visible through the window will turn on if he presses the power button (so he can check missed calls, messages, etc. in the notification center. Also, I'm pretty sure he was able to actually swipe through stuff through the window). On my Z5 Premium, the screen stays black no matter what I do as long as the cover is closed. If I flip it open, then the screen immediately turns on.
So how come this doesn't work on my Z5 Premium? The cover, by the way, is made by Sony themselves, so there's probably an option somewhere that I need to toggle.

There is a NFC tag on the inside of the front cover. Tap your phone with it and it should turn on the front window settings on your phone. I believe I also saw the setting somewhere inside the settings app. Try searching for it if the NFC doesn't work.
Other than that, how do you like the case so far?
Doing so had the phone tell me a tag had been collected (along with a really long URL). The phone then proceeds to do absolutely nothing about it. I can't find any new setting(s) to toggle, either.
Possibly relevant: I've rooted my phone and replaced the rom with RomAur v1.0. I'm loving this case insofar. It's just that I paid 15 bucks extra for the window (a similar case without a window cost 15 bucks less), so I'd rather it work.
i have it. simply paring it with nfc tag. That's all. Then every time you close the case the screen change.

Style Cover - Change Wallpaper
Hi guys, is it possible to change the wallpaper on the style cover for a custom wallpaper ?
I currently have a Galaxy Note 3 with S-View cover, I've got a standard wallpaper on my normal homescreen, and then when I close the S-View cover it has a specific wallpaper just for the S-View, is it possible to achieve this with the Style Cover ?

From what I know using my style cover, no. You might want to try different style cover themes from the Play Store. I just have the black theme and it matches the clean and professional look of my black Z5 Premium. Wish it showed notifications better though.

Ahh ok, so it's not possible to have different wallpapers on the Style Cover and homescreen, you just end up with part of the homescreen wallpaper on the style cover then ?

Well technically, it is "different." It's just not possible to set a custom wallpaper for the style cover window. The wallpaper will be whatever the style cover theme you downloaded from the Play Store. When you open the style cover, the phone will show you your lockscreen/homescreen wallpaper instead.

Ok, that's good to know, I'm pretty sure I can live with that, especially as someone will eventually no doubt find a work around to let you add your own wallpaper, as I know that was the case with the Note 3.
Also are any 3rd party style covers available ? I'm not a fan of the plastic finish on the official Sony ones, and I was hoping that some stylish leather covers might be available.

I've been looking for better cases, but I haven't found anything better than crappy Chinese eBay stuff. I did see some flip cases, but they didn't have a window.

Just as an update, I downloaded a different Style Cover theme from the Play Store and it allows my lock screen wallpaper to override the theme wallpaper. The name of the theme I downloaded is "Aqua Green." There still doesn't seem to be a method to change the Style Cover wallpaper separately though. Whatever you have set on the lockscreen is what you get.

Well that's certainly better than the boring Xperia theme wallpaper, does it shrink the wallpaper down to fit at all or does it just show whichever part of the wallpaper fits in the window ?

It just shows whatever part can be seen through the window. No resizing of the wallpaper happens.

6.0.1 customization advice

Have: Nexus 6P stock 6.0.1. Need: some customization. Items in green have a solution.
I've enabled Developer Mode and System UI Tweaker. I'd like to do this without root, or anything that would affect individual Google Play-installable apps. (The reason is, I need this device for final user release testing, so it should be what users have just from factory reset + install apps and normal OS upgrades):
Different wallpaper on Lock Screen than behind icons and widgets. (Tried: http://forums.androidcentral.com/an...-lock-screen-wallpaper-help-how-can-i-do.html - No triple dot menu visible in Wallpaper)
Full brightness on Lock screen instead of 90%, independent of brightness settings. ("OK" option: same brightness as manual brightness in Settings) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/home-lockscreen-brightness-t1704705 - no Lock Screen Options in Settings)
Disable peeking globally. ("OK" option: put them in the statusbar like 4.4.4) (I don't want to disable peeking for every new app I install: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Here...ifications-in-Android-6.0-Marshmallow_id75408) Temporary solution: I will manually disable peeking for every new app that shows them.
Global saturation setting for icons. (They're all saying "click ME!", that's an icon designer's job. With an excellent high-contrast screen like this, it's a crowd shouting.) ("OK" option: some other way of getting icons to look more Zen.) Icon packs for launchers are that "OK option", browsing tons on Google Play left Hexacon and Dual Shadow. So Hexacon.
Remove the Google Now bar from my Home Screen (without disabling any services). (As in, I taught the device my voice, so I don't need it there for me to tap. Tried: https://www.androidpit.com/how-to-remove-the-google-search-bar-from-your-android-homescreen - it's not long-tappable nor draggable, nor does it appear under Google Apps in Widgets.) Best solution so far: Nova Launcher.
I'd like to be able to do this:
Some quick way (preferably swipe) to access a more compact Quick Settings widget, like on my Xperia Z. I've reduced it to 9, can't remove "Invert Colors" and Location toggles.
Global Night Mode for everything in the System UI - to make it look similar to the Quick Settings. (This is a "like to" only because it's been promised in N. I really need it like, now. ) Best solution so far: Nova Launcher.
Basically I have the greatest phone, so I want it to look good at all times, and with the aim Clean, Fresh, Zen.
I posted here bc the forum was most specific. Feel free to refer or advise me how to best get answers as I joined tonight.
Any & all advice on single questions is appreciated Not possible is a valid answer, and I'm also prepared to wait for N if that's the answer.
I used to think of "ok google" as a novelty but its become more polished and if it remains reliable Ill continue to use it more& more. As it applies to keeping things clean it sort of does eliminate need for extra widgets.
If you have ok google everywhere u can just say " ok google...launch settings". Same goes for music apps, podcasts, youtube videos etc.
Started using a new app other day you might like called sesame edge. I set it on the right edge, virtually invisible and it brings up quick access to apps.

Thanks, trying it out. Also tried Sesame in the hope that it would let me set a different lock screen wallpaper, but it only had "their automatic lock screen wallpaper or off" as setting. I sent feedback to them, so let's see.

I dont use a lockscreen but on Pure Nexus which Im using now there is an option to set lockscreen wallpaper.
I use action launcher 3 which doesnt allow me to remove google bar (i dont think) but nova will let u do that. I like the bar cuz on action launcher i can put several shortcuts for whatever i want.
ASAP launcher is very minimal. Again you cant REMOVE the bar but swipe down and it turns into a simple clock widget.

Thx, tried Nova and it gives me Night Mode. Thanks for that Still, no way to have a different wallpaper on the lock screen than on the home screen, and I can find no Prime option for it either. Pure Nexus requires CM.
Can I mix and match this type of apps? Will they interfere with each other? Sesame seems to work with Nova at least.
What about Hi Locker? http://android.wonderhowto.com/how-to/get-back-lock-screen-customization-android-lollipop-0160204/
Can custom lock screens lock me out of my phone, make me butt dial, hog battery? I just want to change the gdmn background!
As I wrote, if some feature comes in N I'd rather wait than mess up my new phone.

Seems Im constantly tweaking things and having problems recalling exactly what I used. I know making lockscreen different from desktop is something Ive done many times. Do u have xposed? Pretty sure gravitybox has that option.
As far as butt dials, I use sweep to wake & it was a problem. Always remember to put it in your pocket screen facing out. I also need to do that when using bt headphones or else i get distortion. Anyways if i find something relevant Ill let u know.
Thx for suggestions!
I want weather, clock, and a background that matches my high-end case on the lock screen AND NOTHING ELSE, and then wherever there are icons I want a neutral background or just a color so I can see them properly. I think that's being a normal user with sensible demands.
Right now a huge dark gray or white slate COVERS the background anyway. I don't mind it, it lets me see the icons of all manner of variety and quality against something neutral, still... just allowing a background to set behind your icons seems to be an easy addition... since Froyo... Anyway, end rant about Simple Things. Android at least lets you customize them.
I'm battling notifications now. Light Manager is recommended for the 6P - testing it out now for notifications that are actually important, will report.

Flip Cover Window Notifications

Hi there
I have the official flip cover from Huawei with the window to preview the time and weather as well as the playing music...
However a flaw is that there is no option to enable notifications from being viewed directly through the window...
Of course phone calls can be picked up directly but being able to see notifications without opening the cover would be very nice....
Is there a way to make the phone show notifications through the cover? Does Nougat add this feature?
I have already enabled the option to show notifications on the lock screen but it doesn't show on the cover window...
Any Advice is appreciated... Thanks in advance
Got the same. I guess this case is useless. No chance to do that for me. Nougat didnt give this in the patch.

I wonder if there are any apps that will display a notification in top of the cover... That would be useful to see....
