Nexus 4 - Disable Proximity Sensor -- Issues with going black during Call - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I repaired a few nexus 4's for a few friends lately and there seems to be an issue with the proximity sensor everytime the digitizer is replaced. The glass is installed properly and everything and there doesnt seem like anything blocking the sensor at all. Is there a way to just disable the proximity sensor on the nexus 4 easily? I know your can root the phone and disable it via the settings in the file, but rooting requires wiping all the data on the phone and I don't want to do that. Is there a way to root it without wiping everything? I dont care about custom roms as I just want to root it to disable the sensor. Any other options would be good to.
thanks

I'm new and can't post links, but I just posted some details about how I fixed my proximity sensor the other day. Click on my username and view my recent posts if you'd like to read the details.

Auto-rotate not working

Hi, today suddenly my phone didn't rotate the screen anymore when I rotated the phone to landscape. I had auto-rotate on. This problem had stayed for a while now and I have already rebooted my phone as well as turned off and on auto-rotate. I know the accelerometer is working because I used apps that use the accelerometer, so my guess is it's done software bug. I think it had happened before to me but briefly and it somehow got fixed. I'm wondering if this has happened to someone else and how you fixed it. Thanks!

If u were referring to it auto rotating in the home screen, the stock launcher doesn't not do it
No not the home screen, any screen (browser, Facebook, mail, etc..)

Try an app called ultimate rotate to force rotation in apps as a test

Way to read the OP.
This just happened to me....I have auto-rotate checked in accessability and display...any help would be appreciated.
Happening to me now as well. Not sure whats causing it :-/
Auto Rotate
It is happening to me as well.
I don't know if it pertains to you or no as mine is rooted and it does only on AOKP Rom.
For now what I had is to install Screen Orientation app. It lets you toggle Forced Portrait / Forced Landscape mode from notification bar.
And i have checked auto rotation enable in settings.
Open Instagram, it forces portrait..
help
This is happening to me right now but much worse, I've toggled, rebooted, wiped, reflashed, flashed old backups, different kernels, different roms I was originally running AOKP with faux kernel and my auto-rotate had been working fine then I downloaded temple run and I couldn't tilt from side to side, I would re-calibrate but every sensor app I download says that my; Accelerometer, compass, light sensor, proximity sensor, temp, gyroscope, gravity sensor, linear acceleration, and rotation vector sensor don't even exist, the apps say there not there. I have no idea what more to do to reset them or fix them, they were all working fine before and then they just stopped.
Any ideas or information would be appreciated, the last thing I'm going to try is a full Odin flash back to stock everything (if that is even available yet for the nexus 4)

i read something about losing sensors by using the 4.2.2 radio With a 4.2.1 Rom. anyways it's a documented issue. try going through the 4.2.2 threads. i believe that's where i saw it mentioned.
EDIT: here it is!

smacking it worked
read on another forum that "a decently hard smack" would correct it.
they were right, Its working again.
solved mine
in my case, it was an app called gravity screen. uninstalled it, reboot phone, and the auto rotate is enabled now

[Q] Proximity sensor software fix after screen replacement. App no longer works

So with Android Lollipop the app that it was useful before https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.itsme4ucz.screenoff Proximity Sensor Off doesn't work anymore.
Is there any fix I can do to solve this? Preferably if I don't have to root, but If I have to, I'll ultimately do it.

Open the phone dialer and dial *#*#4636#*#* , if it doesn't work the first time try the code again and it should open the hidden testing menu, choose device test and you can manually test all the phones sensors to confirm if the proximity sensor is working or not. I had a s7 that did the same thing, the proximity sensor just quit working one day and I confirmed it wasn't working with this method. Good luck.
same result, not working too.
maybe problem is from hardware,
any idea on how to fix it, just something like using xposed or what?

I just dealt with it, sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't. There's an app on the play store that you can use for screen rotation, I ended up using that when I absolutely needed rotate the screen.
i dont care about rotation screen.. i just want the back screen working normally, if tap transfer button on color display it won't open it on epd screen when i rotate the phone..
I don't know if it happened the same with you, I own a YD206 so I am not sure how YD201 behaves, but there's a problem with proximity sensor that makes it working all the time, I have wrote a comment about it and will try to contact Yota about this, meanwhile it would be important for people that are not aware of this problem because is such a faint light to actually confirm if the same is happening to them, YD201 or YD206:
I discovered that I also have this problem, I was with the wrong radio, had to flash the Chinese radio and it suddenly appeared, this is what I have found I have an YD206, so I wonder how the YD201 behaves:
On YD206:
With wrong radio. radio (Russia xx versions) on YD206 , in KitKat or Lollipop ROMs the proximity sensor is OFF by default BUT, as soon you turn ON an app that uses it, it won't turn off again, it keeps blinking even if you force kill the app that started. However it will turn off if the screen is off, after 5 seconds after. Also it's important to acknowledge that 2G only with this radios fails. On Lollipop Wifi won't turn off automatically, just manually.
YD206 With the correct radio. radio S01_003_3034_CN1_M05 2G 3G (UMTS) and 4G (LTE) all work and with better reception, but as soon the screen is ON, the proximity sensor starts working, does not matter what app you have open, when you turn OFF the screen the proximity sensor will turn OFF in about 5 seconds. If you are using the EPD screen the proximity sensor will turn OFF faster than 5 seconds, but as soon you touch the EPD it will turn ON for 3 seconds or so. On Lollipop Wifi won't turn off automatically, just manually.
So the problem acts differently when you flash a different radio, I am not sure where's the bug comes from, but it seems there's also a bug with YotaRom. There's a Xposed module to disable proximity sensor in specific apps, I haven't tried that, I also would like to know how this behaves with the Marshmallow Beta.
(For the ones that are not aware of this problem, keep in mind that to see this problem you need to be on a dark place to see the very faint red light of the proximity sensor.)
Best regards,
This problem is also being discussed here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/yot...tive-t3520013/

Screen off during calls unresponsive. No proximity sensor values available.

Hi guys I have an international note 4 which I have tried now several ROMs currently on lineageos 7.1.2 but whichever ROM I use the screen is off during calls I cannot send tones or anything I have to pull the battery to end the call.
The proximity sensor is not showing any values in the sensor apps I have tried. No proximity fix app seems to do anything either.
Any ideas?
You might have to replace the sensor, not all electronics live forever, even if they don't physically move or show physical damage. The sensor is cheap, once your phone is open its quick to replace.

It works ok on factory ROM so don't think it's the actual sensor more seems to be a ROM issue maybe bootloader need to try a new one of those maybe!!

Probably not bootloader related. I'd say try different kernels, it might be an issue with the LineageOS kernel.

Please Help Poco M3 proximity sensor

Hello. With a month of use Poco M3 got a lot wet and the proximity sensor stopped working. I took several technical assistance, none of them resolved, it would be necessary to change the mainboard (I didn't find it for sale). As a last hope I rooted, installed magisk, edxsposed, sensor disable and disabled the sensor, in the "factorykit test" "hardware test" says that the sensor is disabled, but the problem remains. (turns off the screen in whatapp audio, turns off the screen during calls, making it totally impossible to use the cellphone. I've done all the youtube tutorials and already downloaded the app from the play store. It didn't do it)
Please someone would have any solution?
Did you find any solution? I have the same problem but still do not installed magisk, I do not find any tutorial to do that.
Maybe we can use another rom?

I didn't solve.
I "Root" with Magisk. I tried to disable the sensor in several ways including with edxposed, but to no avail.
The problem started after water in the cellphone. I believe my problem could be the damaged hardware.
I have installed rom 12.5 and disabled the proximity sensor from there!

After installing the Rom, did you disable the sensor through edxposed? or was it another way?
Thanks
I think he needs to buy a new phone because repairing a faulty motherboard would cost more that the phone itself.
But if you're a good DIY like I did with my Lenovo P2, I opened it and I used a hot gun and dried all water out, the phone now is working with no issues.

No tthere was an option on this new Rom: Proximity sensor. Whatsapp is the main problem now, because when you click on any audio the screen is off and I donĀ“t know how to disable this.
