[Q] G2 Kitkat Camera Quality Differences - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Can anyone that installed kitkat on his/her G2 share some photo samples taken 4.4.2 under this thread?
Also it would be great if you can compare them with older ones.
Thanks in advance.

I am completely disappointed. Kitkat update was my only hope for the camera. Honestly, its about time for me to change my smartphone with better one. Z2 likely mine next one.

Great job LG :crying: well done great support to user

What's your problem with the camera anyway? It shoots wonderful images as long as there is enough daylight.
Keep in mind it is a SMARTPHONE, not some kind of DSLR camera. Photos will never be as good as a real camera, the lens is simply too small.

Compared to other smartphone in life light the lg is wank, nobody is trying to compare it to a standard or DSLR camera, ffs people just don't get it, the lg G2 camera is amazing when in optimal light but indoors my HTC one S pisses all over it because the lag in low light on the lg g2 causes blurring very bad blurring but my HTC one S focusses and takes pictures as fast indoors as it does outdoors shall I continue ? Has the penny dropped yet COMPARED TO OTHER SMARTPHONE CAMERAS THE LGG2 LAGS IN LOW LIGHT !

The view finder in G2 is slow because it relies on long shutter time to get a bright picture in low light. What people want is that it uses high ISO instead, because having noise in the view finder isnt bad as long as normal pictures still use the higher shutter time. Will this affect the picture? Probably not, but it will give a feeling of a less laggy camera at least.

Excuse me guys, I'm really interested in buying this phone but I'm a bit confused about low light photos. I mean, the "lag" in taking low light photos is expected so to increase light intake. How are low light photos compared to other smartphones? I come from a HTC One S.
Thanks.

I came from a HTC one s and in normal lighting this camera is amazing simple as that

Thanks. And about low light (e.g. indoors) photos what do you think? Are they worse than on the One S? I mean, it's obvious that a very still hand is needed, that's not a bug, but how is the photo quality?

This was me messing with the camera for some reason this morning, untouched, room has poor lighting

In low light with the flash on it takes about 5 second's to take a picture but the quality is amazing and with flash off you have to stay so still so no point and shoot like you can with the HTC one S

I don't use the flash in low light and yes, if the object or person is still, it takes awesome pics in low light situations.

I used nearly all smartphone brands in the market and G2's camera is the most disappointing one for me. Although s3 has 8mp camera it gives better reslults. In my opinion 13mp cam with OIS must be far better.

Being laggy is also one of the worst parts of the camera and I hoped that at least LG can resolve that issue with the KK update.

Laggy viewfinder in darkness

I love almost everything about this phone, but I knew it couldn't be perfect.
When it's even somewhat dark, I noticed that the viewfinder lags like crazy, to the point where you're not even sure what shot you're going to get. I have the AT&T version. Can anyone confirm this behavior on the International or Verizon versions?
With a Snapdragon 800, there's really no excuse for this. I'm sure a software update could resolve it, but it's currently my ONLY beef with the phone.

Really? So I'm the only one this happens to? You don't notice a low frame rate in the viewfinder in darkness?
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 4
yeah, when you're in camera mode in the dark, it's a very low framerate. most phones have this issue because it's switching to a high ISO or even night mode to allow more light into the lens, which in turns makes a low FPS screen

Laggy viewfinder here as well, not as laggy on my Lumia 925. Not a big deal though.
Sent from my LG-D800 using Tapatalk 2
Wow, I've bought the G2 last Sunday and the camera is really extremely laggy in low light!
I mean, the viewfinder works at ~5 fps! Also, the pictures become extremely smudgy, like everything is made of wax.
My Samsung Galaxy S 1 (one, yes the first SGS, GT-I9000) does not do that!
I'm so disapointed because this phone has everything I want from a phone and I was expecting so much more from the camera...
Now I see that the original post was made on September 14. It's October 23 and still no update from LG whatsoever.
I have 15 days to return the phone, maybe that's what I will do.
Bigger question is how do the pics themselves come out?

Really blury/smudgy, like everything is made of wax.
This has been my biggest gripe with this phone, unsure if it'll ever be fixed but i hope so. Traded in my note 3 because of the size and that's the one and only thing i dislike about the g2, but its a big concern =\. Concert and bar outing later, all smudged
I agree with this....don't try to take pictures in a dark area...no point it'll come out BAD smudgy and awful. I hope they fix this.
Noticed this problem over the weekend at a nightclub. Granted it is pretty dark in there, but I'd expect to at least be able to focus an image from 5 feet away but nope, pics came out very blurred and the viewfinder was useless. I hope there's a fix soon.

Galaxy Note 3 - Low Light Camera Noise

Hi All,
I just purchased SGNote3 N9005 yesterday. The battery performance is decent, S800 is blazing fast and I really enjoy my new GNote.
Unfortunately, the performance of the camera is sub-par compared to S4 (in overall), especially in low light condition.
Attached is the samples of the photo taken under low light condition, red spots (tint?) are seen on the screen as well as on the picture taken.
Could anyone confirm and reproduce this bug?, if not I'm looking for 1 to 1 replacement...
Is this going to be another HTC One Camera bug?

This might sound stupid, but did you remove the plastic protective film on the lens of the camera? I asked this bcos I didn't know there was one and the camera was behaving rather strange, sometimes wouldn't even focus when put close for micro shot...And after I found out and remove the film, problem solved

Disappointed with Camera, suggest alternate cameras apps

Had purchased this phone with lot of expectations about OIS camera but unfortunately the camera itself is capable bug LG provided with not a great camera app.
Now I know that there are mods available which to some extent improve the quality of photos but still its not upto the mark.
Now I want to know whether you are using any good camera app which you consider gives better result than the stock camera?
Looking forward to your suggestions.

I personally think the camera itself is great piece of hardware, the software is on the other hand, however, as many reported (and I agreed) the IQ (image quality) when taking in the good light source is super. In another hand, when taking under low light condition, it's crap.
There is a modded version of it, if yours is rooted, give it a try.
I tend not to install 3rd party app.
I've tried the camera on stock lg rom and 4.4.2 on PA, both pictures look terrible compared to the Nexus 5's camera with HDR mode.
I am using Focal camera (from the ex-CyanogenMod app ). Great UI and features. Still beta, but no lags for me)

lmao. random noobs who haven't even used the other device talking about comparison? what do you know? nothing.. keep theorycrafting.
the nexus 5 has an optimized camera app that has better image stabilization and HDR+ mode that actually works by taking 5 pictures and combining it into a much crisper picture compared to normal mode. the HDR mode in the G2 looks practically the same in terms of sharpness and quality.

I'm the opposite heh, I returned my Nexus 5 and picked up a G2 and think the pictures from the G2 look considerably better, in anything but great lightning. Outside with great lighting I think both create very good photos. Additionally, while the software part on the G2 isn't great it's still well ahead of the camera software on the Nexus, which is about as bare bones basic as you can get.

I think it actually only uses 3 pictures though. But not sure. I saw in a review that it uses 3 with 4.4.2 to make it faster a little. But it still turns out great. I personally can't see the difference in pictures unless placed side by side but that's just me I think since I don't really pay too close detail.
One thing I want to say is video on the nexus 5 is terrible unless full day light and even then not very good. It darkens it so much (which I think is software) but it's practically unusable with out lots of light because of that. Hopefully Google fixes that

Is the image stabilization a hardware feature? Like, in the VS980 version of the G2, does image stabilization work when using AOSP-based KitKat roms and the default AOSP camera?
The Lenovo Supercamera or whatever it's called will blow you away mate.

That one is in my Dropbox, it's the same APK from the thread in Apps & Games section.

Change it to 13MP in the settings menu too, because it's set lower as default.

I'm disappointed too with g2 camera (d802), it is extremely slow and in low light it is impossible to take pictures. Then I installed aosp roms and things got worse. Here some pics, taken in very low light with aosp camera (android 4.4.2) but even with stock rom camera I can not obtain decent results.

The pictures are poor. You're gonna have some good, some bad, but overall the camera is poor. Especially when zooming at all.
The camera app itself is snappy and it'll focus fast, but this ultra pixel with 4mp just isn't gonna get it. There is 2 year old technology cranking out better, more consistent pictures.

Yeah, um, those Flickr photos look more than acceptable for me. I don't need the best camera if I'm getting the best screen, audio quality, and experience that the M8 will surely offer as the M7 did. The camera is literally secondary (or, well, further than that) than all of those areas and, even then, it's not really bad at all.

In all seriousness, when it comes down to cutting costs on a smartphone design, camera would be the first thing on my list too. Would you rather it be made of cheap plastic, not have front facing speakers or have a smaller battery?
I'd take superior hardware/build over a great camera any day. I know we want it all, but it seems like we just can't have it all. At least not til the M9.

IMAG0065 that night time pic...looks really really really bad. but for the most part its not bad. Matter of fact all the night time ones are really bad towards the end .
In complete and utter seriousness guys (not being a fanboy either) I was MORE than pleased with the camera on the M7. That was my primary concern that I debated over for months before getting the M7 - giving up my iPhone 5 which took awesome pics was a difficult choice. Hands down, I'm more than excited to get back to Android (had to go back to my iPhone 5 due to selling my M7). The true wide angle 16:9 is so awesome and the pics were great. Overall, I felt like I was able to regularly capture more accurate color representations with the M7. Low light was pretty great too.
I will say, there were a few times where I was left wishing I could crop to a larger size and retain image quality. However, for me personally, it wasn't a big enough issue for me to ditch the phone, as I don't need to do that often enough. If you're someone who is perpetually cropping, this probably isn't going to work for you.
Also, I used to have an album of pics I took on my phone to show people when they'd play with it. I received soooo many compliments on the pics I took and more people saying "This phone has such an amazing camera" never knowing it was only 1/2 the MP's as their phones.
I understand and agree with the major drawbacks of it, however, as an overall quick shooter to the ability to take your time and change settings to get an optimal pic, it blew me away quite a few times. That's more than I could ever say about my iPhone.
Addition: there was a thread I saw with M7 vs. M8 photos and the colors looked quite a bit better and more crisp on the M8. I'm excited to see what I can do with it.
although the MP is disappointing, the strengths of the phone outweigh a blunder such as that I think. It's not like the camera is crap, it's just average for current times. We just had higher expectations as we should have especially compared to last year's. I would say the camera is "adequate"

The camera is capable of some really nice quality shots. Example below
The camera is good, but the processing/software is not the best, using the app snapspeed you realize there is a lot more potential with the camera.
My biggest problem with the camera is it does not handle sunlight well, it will dim down the picture a sunny day will suddenly look like evening and darker instead... I do not have any solution for that..

My biggest problem with the camera is it does not handle sunlight well, it will dim down the picture a sunny day will suddenly look like evening and darker instead... I do not have any solution for that..

I've not yet experienced it dimming my photos. But I can agree that it could probably be better, but my whole point is that it is far from terrible

Camera timer not working
Has anyone else seen this problem? It was working in the beginning but I think after root it stopped. It takes the photos immidiately without the timer.
I too can't find the "timer" ... Have set up the 3 seconds option, but when pressed the shutter, photo was taken immediately.
How to make a timer shot? Thanks.
Please can anyone help me ? I've frozen the stock camera and when i restored it it doesn't want to work. Can anyone give me the apk of the app camera ?
Thanks a lot.
Try the app perfectly clear it will bring your camera with life with HDR realistic mode.

buy the app
but download snapseed it will do well
I was impressed with the sharp focus and good detail but the images were dull. Simply turn up saturation and voila! Nice images. Does great close ups too. I really like being able to trigger it by saying "cheese" also.
What mode did you guys use?
I used HDR 4:3
Anyone have any lowlight shots , thinking of buying this...its kind if a biggie for me lol
As OP said, the camera hardware is pretty good, however the software can be improved.
I came from an iPhone 6 Plus to my HAM7, and I must say I very dearly miss optical stabilization. Color reproduction also leans to the dull side, but as previous posters have mentioned a few seconds' worth of tweaking in Snapseed will fix that problem.
Overall the camera is definitely not bad, and I adore the fact that you can get super close to the subject without losing focus (something I had to buy a macro lens for on my IP6). I just really, really wish it had OIS.
