Call quality - Xperia Z2 General

Hi, I'm seriously thinking of getting this phone. All of the previous Sony phones I've had in the xperia range were really too quiet for me on making calls on the phone, i could hardly hear caller on the other end. The last sony i had was the xperia z and had to return it.
Have things changed on the call quality since the xperia z, i would LOVE to own this phone and that is the only thing holding me back.
Thanks.

Lol my Z is so loud i had to turn it down.

^ Same goes for my Z1, it's so damn loud. I set it to 60% of the maximum so people around me can't hear the one with whom i speak lol.
At 100% it's almost like a loudspeaker.

Ok thanks for the replies ill give it a try

I just don't understand how people complain that it's not that great,
I am planning on getting this phone too Hopefully in April.

Nexus S call volume

Hi guys how is NS call volume really interested in purchasing one. I have x10 terrible call volume can't hear nothing. I wonder if it has to do with android? Or maybe x10 and how is NS compare to x10 call volume wise. Thanks

In-call volume on my Nexus S is good. I once had a Sony-Ericsson T610 and the in-call volume was so low (even with hands-free), I swore to never have one again.

I picked up the Nexus S Friday on Rogers and call quality and volume are important factors for me - I can't stand a quiet phone in a noisy environment. For example the iPhone 3G volume wasn't loud enough in a bar. Earpiece call volume at maximum is similar to the iPhone 4 or HTC Desire with Froyo but not as loud as the Motorola Atrix. Call quality is decent as well. Speaker volume is fairly good too but not as loud as the iPhone 4. And since it's a tiny speaker quality isn't the best, but it's good enough for handsfree in the car with the windows up. I was a little concerned about the volume, but once I used the Nexus S demo for a few minutes to confirm performance and call quality, I bought the phone.

My previous phone was an X10i and definitely the call volume in the Nexus S is far better. You can actually hear it. On my X10, unless my ear was right next were the sound output was I couldn't hear anything and even when my ear was right there it was difficult to make out what was being said.
The speaker phone on the X10 can be heard, but still the Nexus S is much louder and the voice quality is better than the X10.
Well, it really depends on every ACTUAL phone. Why ? I've first bought the Nexus S i9023, European version. Even at the highest ear-piece volume, it was soooo quiet I couldn't hear a god damn word. I had to put my girlfriend to yell at me every time we spoke at the phone. Returned it, bought a US i9020 version. Clear and crisp, as loud as my previous HTC Desire. I've searched for this bug on Google and found that many handsets from different producers have this. Some users have low ear-piece volume at high setting, some of them have HIGH ear-piece volume at low setting (as high as if the ear-piece was like the load-speaker on the back). Dunno why.
So yea, it really depends on each handset. I would strongly suggest to test right after buying, if not preferably when actually in the store.

A manufacturing defect is one thing and rare these days when compared to the amount of devices being manufactured. Any device you buy runs the risk of being defective. The question here is if the Nexus S is generally expected to have good call volume, and the answer is yes. As for the model differences, the display and radios are different parts in the 9020 & 9023, but the earpiece and driver should be the same in all Nexus S models and have the same output.

There MUST be a difference in some of these phones because there is NO possible way anyone could ever complain that the earpiece volume was too loud or high on my Nexus S - NAM version
My nexus S seems very quiet compared to my iP4 even at max settings. Is there a way to manually boost the volume limit through voodoo or something?
many people have said the nexus s volume was too low. how come there has not been an audio boost in cyanogen like there has been for other phones?
The call volume is acceptable. Just don't expect whomever you're on the phone with to hear you clearly if there's a lot of noise around you.

Well yea, they SHOULD have the same volume. But that doesn't mean a i9023 phone can't have a "broken" earpiece with low volume.
Anyway, I think you got me wrong. I didn't suggest that the i9020 was fine and the i9023 has crappy earpiece. No. I just said that MY OWN i9023 had problems. Not that ALL i9023 have problems.

, like Sony Ericsson, etc. Just Google it and you'll find some threads.
So, because some of the phones have this problem (not all of them), then that's why I suggested a replacement from the seller.
Ohh I taught it has something to do with android os low call volume

the nexus s in call quality overall is quite good, however many users are reporting either extremely low or high volume from the normal forward facing speaker. its been about 5 months since the device was released and only now the ppl at cm are looking into resolving it

Just ordered my 6602 for AT&T

I decided to try the Z 6602 model after seeing the awesome Ultra Z on youtube.com.
I had the ZL but the camera was bad and the screen was washed out. I am sure the Z will be the same way but I am willing to give it a shot.
Right now I am using the S4 Active as my daily driver and love it. Just bored and want to try something different out.
Hopefully I will like it because the styling is top notch on the Z.
What are your thoughts after using the Z for awhile?

So what are your thoughts on the Z? I wanted a real users perspective on the unit after someone has had a chance to use it for awhile.
Like does the bar with buttons on the bottom bother you because it takes up space? Or does it bother you that the screen washes out when you are not looking directly at it?

Is the legit?? I may have to get an Xperia Z if this is true
Coming from the Note 2
Battery is about 5.5h screen time
Screen is sharper but color is not as vivid
Walkman the music player, great sound quality.
Much easier to hold, good build quality
Great if you use the phone in extreme environment, dust water proof etc
Real world phone all the bands, you can use hspa+ with att or T-Mobile actually anywhere in the world
You need to remove a flap cover every time you want to charge the phone so a dock is a must. Because the flaps might wear down or break
Jb 4.2 it's nice
version 2 of the Z well be awesome because it's a decent phone right now with unique water proof
Get a camera zoomfx and you can use the volume button to take pictures and video underwater

Yes it is true. It is like night and day it now even includes an white adjustment app. But anyway the screen now is clear. It changed since software version 253 those are the last three number from it hat software ever sine then the camera starts quicker and makes much better pictures and the screen got clear it is really nice. If u eben have android 4.2.2 they even enhanced it a tiny bit more. That's how the xperia should have been released. The latest software version is 423 that's the android 4.2.2 update but every version since 253 makes a difference. Everything before 253 will have slow camera blurry screen.

you will regret getting the Z, it just the same as the ZL, stick to the active. If not i'll trade ya my Z for your active
dont let anyone tell you the screen isnt wash out anymore, it still there even with 4.2.2, the camera is ok after the recalibrate their software but the flash sucks compare to the Active and I know this cause I own the S3 and that was freaking bright.
I don't really understand why people have to ask others when they want to buy a phone. It's a matter of your own preference, not others. Asking people won't help that much. Go to the store, try it and play with it. See it with your own eyes. If you like it, buy it. If you don't, get another one. Isn't that simple?

10 reasons why you may consider upgrading to Z1

Hey guys, so I have upgraded my Xperia Z to Z1 and thought I would make a video giving you 10 reasons why you may wish to upgrade.
For most the upgrade is pointless though as the Xperia Z is still a very powerful phone and has really good specs but I thought I would point out the 10 things that are better about the Z1, so if you are in for an upgrade, you have the money definitely go for it
bro everyone want to upgrade to Z1 but considering the cost that i've already spent my 630$ and im not sure if i want to spend another 750$ for Z1 unless Sony throws any phone swap scheme. how much did you get after selling your Xperia Z?

No, I just sent it to have it fixed before I try and sell it. They retail for around 400$ where I live though
I will say why NOT to upgrade:
1. Too big
2. Same sound on external speaker
3. Same shutter proof cover on the glass, WTF!
4. Battery consumption is the same.
5. Web browsing, video playback time is below competitors.
Now, im my case who bought S, T and Z there is no reason to upgrade and one of the main reasons is that ASF s**t at the end of 2013, the only upgrade i can see is to leave sony and buy from competitors...but i have an entire collection of Sony since J70 and i still.. prefer to eat their crap.

1. Have you held it in your hand? It is actually way more comfortable than Z
2. The speaker placement is better though
3. You can always take it off. I have spoken to a Sony Center emloyee and apparenty those are replaceable and you do not lose your warranty (but yeah you would have to confirm that one with your retailer)
4. In tests the battery life is in fact better and in normal usage I have found it to last me longer
5. Ok but for the tests they should have switched off X-Reality in some of them they didn't and that is an extra strain on CPU and GPU

It's the matter of taste. I like Z speaker more than in Z1. Just my opinion.
My bro got the Z1 today after having a play im glad i went with the Z ultra over the Z1 (currently using a Z) the z1 is a really nice handset but for me the original z was a big leap forward for Sony where as the Z1 is just an upgrade rather than anything new.

Z Ultra is a great tablet. It is very comfortable to use, most units have a very nice display (a lot of them come with yellow hue though some worse than on my Z1). You say it is just an upgrade but with so many areas improved and redesigned it is kinda difficult to call it that.
Just an upgrade would be if they put 1 maybe 2 things from the list but here you have so many changes that it is like a completely new handset.
Of course it is a matter of personal needs and preference whether an upgrade is right for you at this moment but without a doubt it is a great piece of equipment which shows that Sony can innovate and is moving forward ahead of its competitors.

Yeah i agree its all dependent on personal taste my bro loves it coming from an S4 he is really happy (not that he didnt love his S4)
he just said the z1 felt like premium handset and was extremely solid.
Only reason i ordered the Ultra was i like to be different and nobody i know is brave enough to own a handset of that size so i know ill be unique.

Seriously the video playback time and web browsing time is not good. Video playback is like only 5 hours plus? Samsung's s3 has got like 9 hour plus and note 3 if I'm not wrong is around 11-14hours I think. Web browsing and video playback is two of the main things we do on a smartphone isn't it?

when XPERIA Z2 comes out Z1 will be just the same old forgotten toy like Z
One of my annoyances.. uhh... Two are
01. The flash is extremely weak! I've taken pictures at night side by side with another much lower end phone and my pics came out way darker. In daylight its fine.
02. The WiFi range isn't too far
Are these two points improved on in the Z1 or Ultra?

I think the s4 pro is enough; don't need to upgrade to s800, it seems like the old PCs processors war...
It seems the WiFi in Z1 has also a poor signal as the Z,one of the reasons may not get this phone if the issue is not fixed

Z2 after two weeks - comments

So, after two weeks of use, I am still loving the phone overall. I do however have some nitpicks that I would like to share here, just for edification.
(1) The automation software that Sony has written is buggy and I mean really buggy. My main issue is that the state changes don't return the phone back to the way it was before the automated state went into effect. For example, NIGHT silences everything, but if I was silent before and I take the phone off the charger in the middle of the night, it turns sounds back on.
(2) Bluetooth - My bluetooth module crashes EVERY time I am in the car and connected. If I'm on a call, it goes in and out at least once. I would say it is the car's bluetooth, but I've never had this happen with other phones.
(3) Wi-Fi - My wifi connection at work has been spotty, but now I sit directly under an access point. The Z2 contines to go in and out of service for no reason. It still may be the connection at work, as it doesn't happen on my home network. But, I find it quite strange.
(4) Docked - The wake-up screen doesn't switch to vertical when the phone is docked. The home screen does.
(5) Phone screen - Not sure who laid the screen out, but it is too easy to engage the phone pad screen, which in turn starts dialing numbers. The sensor doesn't seem to recognize my big face on it, so it doesn't turn off while in a call. DO NOT LIKE.
(6) Autodimming Feature - doesn't really work as advertised. If I'm in a dark room, I don't need the screen to be full on. And yet, it does.
(7) 4K camera recording shut off AND manual camera (20MP) gets an over heating after a few pictures.
now, the good part...
(1) Screen is great for everything, I don't know what people are complaining about. No it isn't flame on strong like a Galaxy S5, but it works and very well, for whatever I need.
(2) Battery life and performance are phenomenal
(3) Simple Android skin.
(4) Camera quality is fantastic. Even in a dark room I got great pictures.
Thanks for info. Looking at bright side, most of your problems should be solved with software update.
I love everything about this phone except one thing :
I have T-Mobile and before this I had Nexus 5 and mostly I had LTE almost ever where but with this phone that percentage is lowered now and rather than having 90% of LTE everywhere I have like 50% LTE everywhere and mostly H+, I don't know why or maybe that's how's this phone or maybe if they release a better radio or firmware if fix the problem, I hope for it.
Thanks for the info/initial impressions. As already mentioned, most of your problems seem to be due to software issues that could well be fixed in the future. However, the overheating issue concerns me a lot. What if it's a design fault and no ROM updates are going to fully solve it... Idk...

I have had the phone for more than a week and I have to say I love it. I can confirm a few niggles here and there, but nothing deal breaking and I can see myself living with the phone for the next few years. I agree with many that the real killer issue here is overheating. While initially restricted to 4k recording, it seems that the issue is more widespread than this, and today it happened to me recording 1080p at 60fps as well as 4k recording. Only a few minutes in each time. No each time the phone did not feel particularly hot, so I suspect this is predominenty related to the threshold set for the software to go in safe mode so that could be fixed if that was inadequate calibration.
Saying that, I find it difficult to believe that an issue like this could not have been picked up during testing... Certainly makes it looked like they did fry up a few phones during development for them to be so overly (?) cautious on this...
I have the same problem with the spotty wifi. It can drop and go back to LTE all of a sudden with no apparent reason. And it has the tendency to lose mobile connection while I'm traveling on the train, I don't get this with my S3. Fortunately I'm sure Sony can fix these issues buy upgrading the radio and software updates. It's just a matter of whether they will take notice.
Sent from my non-Apple device via XDA App
You know I think Sony makes bad radio antenna. cause Xperia SP is also having issues of dropping signals right now with it's latest update.
Once I went out for skiing and I was using Xperia Z and my two friends had HTC Evo 3D and GS3, they both got h+ yet I only got edge which kinda sucked.
Well, Ive had the phone for a week today
I haven't had the same issues as the OP,
the automation software I do have issues with as in night mode it does not turn off notifications and the picture viewer starts, but the way I have got round this is to go to flight mode at night
No problems whatsoever with Bluetooth connections in my S-0max, Freelander or Jag XF, all working perfectly
no problems with wifi, but I did have to uncheck the "Avoid Poor Connections" in advanced wifi setting
no issues with phone pad random dialling or catching it
agree with camera quality, screen quality and noise cancelling headphones are great (but are awful in my ipad, terrible quality on that)
would agree the sound levels are too low, needs an update to increase volume choices

Glad I get to pick mine up today. I will say that when I had the z1 that it had low signal issues where it would cycle between LTE, HSPA and no signal in areas where other att phones stay locked on one or two bars of LTE. I'm hopeful this one will be a bit better, but we'll see.
Had my Z2 since Tuesday, It's going back!! Only for a replacement though as I love it.
Reason for going back, the gap is present on the top right on the phone.
other problems I have is the camera. Amazing results but I keep getting overheating message and shutdowns, and the keyboard is a nightmare, keep missing the space bar, but this is no big issue.
The good things, well just about everything else. The speakers are amazing, the screen is absolutely gorgeous, and it is not dim, I spend most of the day with it on auto with slider at the lowest setting. The mrs says it's ugly and looks old, I do not agree with this, it's gorgeous, and looks sleek and elegant.
Would I recommend, hell yeah!!
One further note, when you place it on the stand at night and go sleep, don't leave the bloody vibrate on, man, I sh*t myself and so did the Mrs, followed by me getting a bit of verbal!!!

lol..perhaps a s5 would be the better choice then...but i am really tired of the design language being used by them come on, sony! lets hope the overheating can be solved through a software update
I've had mine since the 17th of April and I haven't experienced most of the problems the OP listed. I've had the 4k over heating force closing camera app but that was only on the first day because I was already using the camera for ages before testing 4k. Since then it's never happened again. Never happened with 1080p video at any point even 60fps.
No problems with lte or wifi. Don't use bluetooth much so can't comment there. Automodes work OK for me. Well it's just the night mode I used so no extensive testing done there.
Z2 rocks, put it this way, I've spent a lot of time criticising most of the Sony Ericsson and Sony devices I've owned but the z2 ain't gonna join that list.
The display is class leading, whites may not be the whitest but they're white enough. The colour reproduction is spot on despite the vibrancy unlike you know who. Performance is boss too. Only notice frame drops in games when the phone gets very hot after prolonged periods.
Sound quality is great too and I for one don't have any problems with notifications. I hear them from the living room when I'm outside. I also like the fact that it automatically adjusts the sound volume depending on what you're doing. It's loudest during gaming. I think that's good because I can just leave the phone on full volume and it automatically takes care of everything. No need to keep adjusting the volume. Another thing I discovered is that you can zoom in on any video you record with the device, not just 4k. Obviously not as much detail is preserved but it's great nonetheless.
The camera for me is the real star of the show. Not really a superior auto man because historically that produced the worst results possible especially with the Z. Not this time though. Manual for me is still king but superior auto has been greatly improved and you can be happy using it. It actually does a better job at white balance under artificial lighting. Something I hope is addressed in manual mode with software updates.
As for photo quality, it's fantastic at 8mp. Sure you can't zoom in as much as with 20.7mp but the quality is much better in ever respect. Detail preservation, colour reproduction, dynamic range etc. Fantastic job done here by Sony. They've certainly joined Nokia in the premier league of smartphone cams. If the lumia 1020 is an incredible 5mp camera, think of the z2 as an incredible 8mp camera.
Took me a while to get used to the size of the phone though but I'm over that now. Z starting to look an feel small now lol!
All in all, it's not only by far and away the best effort from Sony, it's the best smartphone ever built. It's monolithic rectangular design might not be everyone's cup of tea especial those who like to grip their phones but I love it and hope Sony never changes it. To give you some perspective, I absolutely hated the xperia arc design. That's just me I know. The m8 might feel more premium but I think it's butt ugly with those juvenile speaker grills. I actually prefer the s5's look if not feel.
There's more to talk about especially the noise cancelling genius. Works like a charm and does exactly what it claims to do.
It's also pretty solid and rugged. I've dropped mine a few times and it's shown no damage at all. I'm glad Sony went back to the original z design and put a plastic edge around the aluminum frame. My mates z1 is already showing signs of age but the z still looks fab. I think z2 will stand the test of time much like the z did.
For the bad, the phone is way too slippery hence why I've dropped it a lot. It even slides off surfaces on its own lol.
The camera also tries to force the bokeh effect on you. If you have anything that remotely looks dominant and central to the scene, the camera tends to blur out a bit objects in the background. IPhone 5s does this too but is sort of annoying especially when the z2 has a dedicated shooting mode for this. Admittedly one that's not the most accurate. Well even m8 with its secondary depth sensor is inaccurate so let's not take the high ground here.
To avoid rambling on, this is one phone I'll gladly recommend to anyone who isn't worried about size. For those of you that are, just wait for the z2 compact.

thanks for your input! but btw, when you mean you haven't faced the overheating for 4k, was it at least 5 minutes? i fully intend to use the z2 for an upcoming concert, so at least 5 mins of 4k would be awesome(for cropping/zooming in) :good:

Before replying, I started another 4k video to see what happened. It recorded for 5mins 22 seconds and then forced closed. Mind you I've been using the phone all morning so was already a bit hot. I think it all depends on the temperature of the phone. If cool, you can probably record for longer. You can though zoom into any video you record. I would suggest using 1080 at 60fps at the concert or just make sure your device is cool before recording in 4k.
I think it's a threshold Sony set for it. If that's correct then removing or increasing this threshold may result in people pushing it too far and damaging their devices.
If it's not a threshold then who knows, there maybe a fix released at some point. Don't forget, the z2 really hasn't got going yet. Sony is still struggling to make it widely available so we may have to wait a few months for any fixes.
I'll wait for the device to cool down completely and retry. I'll come back to you then.

thanks loads! haha if it would really take months, the Z3 would be out already(as said by another member above) i still think their 6 months refresh rate is a tad too fast but oh well

I think the 6 month cycle is disgusting. Nobody benefits from this. Not consumers and not Sony. With all the delays I doubt we'll see z3 until next year. I think z2 compact and possibly z2 ultra are more likely later this year. Sony would just have absolutely no justification for pushing the z3 in September. Even if they do, it'll just be another rough sketch phone like the z1 was. One which I'll surely be skipping and would advise others to do so as well. 6 months is way too short a time to develop a phone. You'll end up with another unrefined rough sketch. Let's be honest, the z1 looks now like an early prototype of the z2. If it was a proper construct, they would have called it the z2. The z1 was the original z. The z1 was a child of pure greed on Sony's part. I'm sure most z1 users will be wishing they'd skipped that device. Doing think there were that many z users who wished they'd waited for the z1 though. We've seen what Sony has to offer for 2014 and you'll realistically have to wait at least a year to any meaningful improvements. Case in point, z2 and z1 have similar camera specs but z2 produces infinitely better results. Why? The z1's camera was just the hardware without the refinements needed. Like I said, it was a rough sketch of what Sony had to come. In my opinion h2 flagships from Sony are nothing but dishonest devices. Sony's basically selling early prototypes to consumers.

Are you guys on the 2.55 or 2.69 firmware? Maybe the 2.69 has some changes to help with the overheating.

Do a review / comparison to the z1

well here's the comparison.
1. with regards to heating which is almost everyone is complaining, can say that the warm is the same as z1.
2. the screen is so clear and smoother when swiping.
3. everytime i lay it on the table and look into it, i tend to smile and think what a gorgeous phone it is.
4. about the battery, getting 1-1/2 days with standard use; phone call, messaging, wifi on all day even at home, sync always on, music about 2 hrs a day on a bluetooth headphone, 1 hr watching anime, didnt turn off any services. the battery will drop a lot when playing games and can last only about 2 hrs, but its usual because of the processor, but doesnt heat up so bad just like others say. the z3 will last longer but hey this is an octacore with 810 chip, so im happy with this.
5. Also, when full charged just like yesterday night, it only drop 2% from 10pm to 5 am.
6. well speaking of sound, its a stereo phone compared to mono on z1.
7. the pictures and movies were so clear, even on zoomed.
8. about the UI and other apps, cant compare because i installed z5 apps on my z1..hahaha..
9. its heavier than z1 but its ok.
10. the fingerprint scanner is one of the features i like, registered my fingers and my wife fingers, and no fail when using fingerprint when unlocking the phone.
so generally, its a great phone and recommend to everyone with z1.

Thanks a lot! what about the sound ? what earphones does it come with an d how does it actually sound like compared to z1

about the quality well the sound on z5 is better than z1.
i think the normal earphones only, didnt use the earphones cause i have my sony mdr1rbt-mk2 bluetooth headphone.
if you use a wired earphone there's an option of dsee-hx on audio settings above clear audio,it only works on wired phone but on my headphone its working also because it has dsee-hx too.
also, there's an option of automatic optimization on headphone settings.
and also, the stereo speaker also has an s-front sorround option.
Enjoy your z5! ??
