[Q] Bezels - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Quick question,
i noticed the bezels are slightly thicker than what i expected it to be.
so my question is, to anyone that owns an s4, does the s5 bezels look any thicker than the s4's?
i know the device isn't out yet and many people havent gotten a chance to hold one yet, but yeah.

Yes it s thicker.
but thicker is not that bad. maybe someone like thinner bezel like LG G2 But they should always use good case for it!
cause thr s no durability for G2!
but S5 seems to have good durability!

Bezels seem bigger and the overall size of the phone is bigger too. I don't understand how it got that much bigger due to screen being 0.1 inch bigger and battery being just 200mah more. See for yourself here

There's no point in debating durability. We all know if it's dropped without a case, the chance that it breaks is like rolling a dice.

just a bit concerned because the bezels are HUGE on my xperia z ):

I think the IP67 rating of the phone is the reason the phone is bigger than we would have thought it was gonna be.

The S5 will still have way smaller bezels than any of the Xperia Z* devices. While the Z2 may have a 5.2' screen, at least 0.2" are used up by the nav buttons so in reality you really only have a 5" screen for the majority of the time unless you are watching videos where the nav buttons hide away.
The other issue is with the massive bottom bezel and the on screen nav buttons, it leads to an awkward typing experience.

The Galaxy Note confirms it: people want larger screens

A good article.
http://mobile.osnews.com/story.php/25750/The_Galaxy_Note_confirms_it_people_want_larger_screens
It jokes about the "optimal" iphone 3.5 incher.
YES. People like Galaxy Note.
Sent from the galaxy far far away.
This is so true. At first i thought "damit is that thing big, i should bring it back to store" but when i put it in my pocket it fits and i can walk run and jump with the note in my pocket. So for me its the best phone ever until now iv'e ever had. I love the scree size, if i compare it to the holy iphone i have to laugh everytime about the size..... Its so cute this little iphone thing. I could give it to childrens who can play with it in a sandbox.
Exactly. Those "tech bloggers" should be making fun of people trying to use their "revolutionary" smartphone's functions on a tiny, heavy and fragile 3.5 incher instead...
I hardly ever played any games on my EVO but thats all I do on my Note!!
It simply kicks ass!! Fun times!!
All the reviewers are Jabronis.....perfect size the note is ....especially if you have big hands like me ....cant stand anything else will never go back.....
On-screen controls in games always felt wrong on those small 3.5" phones.. on the S2 they felt better.. on the note they make sense..
sure smaller is sometimes better.. but when packing all this power into a device biggish is good
5.3" aint that big either, just a tad bigger then my wallet but alot thinner.
i followed some links in that blogg and came onto another planet where i was told the android UI makes us need larger screens cos else we wouldn't see anything if android got higher res.. font-size? bigger icons? felt like easy fixes...
kinda feels like iphonE lovers just digs deeper and deeper into something to hold on to.. to make them feel "i did the right choice, my phone is the best"
sad truth is my sister loves the Note but felt she couldn't buy it cos its to big.. she would feel looked at and laughed at.. so she settled with the S2.
i often tell ppl if they are not into computers, etc when they ask if they should buy an iphone or Note to buy an iphone, the safe no-one will laugh at your choice and no-one will question why. its kinda like putting on pants, no one will ask you why.
sorry for the rant..
Awesome. Hope the note 2 or 3 has a slightly bigger screen. 6 inches would be even more awesome

... or people want a stylus and Apple may have to eat SJ's words if they want to catch up.
Apparently a lot of Asian markets like the Note because it's easier to input characters than a keyboard based interface.
Personally, any larger form factor and it would be difficult to fit in my jeans pocket.

Agreed, but only if the kept the same form factor as they have now, but getting the screen bigger by stretching it all the way to the edges, in other words, almost no bezel.
i remember a point when I said 5" is the most any phone should go to. well, now I do believe the limit is 6" since anything bigger than that is a tablet fully at that point.
man i want a 6" phone or a SAMOLED+ HD tablet with telephony
I have to admit - i bought the Note without trying it first. When it arrived, i unboxed it and was terrified...
My first impression ? Oh my god, what have i done...but it took two days of using - and now i don't even notice the size. What's more - i don't really mind the size anymore, it feels normal, and is very useful.
iPhone's 3,5" was nice - 3-4 years ago. After that i moved to 4,3" HD7 and now to 5,3" Note. Bigger IS better here, especially with superior AMOLED screen.

I also almost regret my Note but after 2 days ... I was just hooked
I think, it's not like people want large screen, it's just it fit some people needs (like watching movies, browsing etc)
Yeah there's still more room in my pocket for something bigger.
But not my jean pockets lol. I don't know how you guys can put this phone in your jean pockets. And I want a full usb port or 2 on it. The more things it can do like a netbook, the better.

This is more a rant than an article.
The note does not confirm that "people want larger screens". What it confirms is that some people want larger screens.
The claim that "Android phones go for the larger screen" is also not correct. There are many Android phone manufacturers and many models, of all shapes and sizes. Search using gsmarena finds 185 Android models with sceeen of size 3.2" or smaller.
I've got the largest hands in the whole town so the NOTE feels average to me.
Sometimes I even think, maybe this should be a little larger like 5.5inches. But now I've equipped the NOTE with the TPU case. Its quite protective, has a very grippy sides and it has a KICKSTAND!!!
But with the case on, I have some trouble slipping it into some pockets (jeans mainly).
So after pondering a bit, I think Samsung should make the NOTE with a kickstand, and shave off the bezel from the top and bottom portions.
OR
Make it smaller (from 147 x 83mm; 5.3inch) to 145mm x 79mm (shorter, little less wide, 5.1inch). It needs to shave off some of the bezel, for the premium aspects.
Though my biggest problems is that:
-Back and Menu buttons should be physical (its too damn easy to accidentally press them; frustrating when you accidentally exit an App and have to start from scratch)
-They should position the volume rocker on the right side and make it clickier (like the Nexus S)
-They should position the power button on the top and make it larger and clikier (like the Nexus S)
-Trade the position of Back and Menu button; and hitting the Menu button should bring the contexual menu's on the bottom and the search bar on the top.
If Samsung hired me for a prototype, my device would outsell any competitors!
I'm also for shaving off the Bezels but to have instead a larger screen by keeping the same overall size.

---What are your thoughts on the kickstand?
Should it be on the device, or on the case?
(If its on the case, it means you need to use a case, meaning the overall size is increased and its harder to draw/place into pockets.)
---What are your thoughts on the Navigational Buttons?
On-screen? all physical? all capacitive? or have the Home physical and the rest capacitive?

I think the idea of 6 inches with the same form factor is great all they would then need to do is increase the resolution as the pixel density will not compete with the likes of Sony Arc S or some of the other 4-4.5 HD screens.
If they did both of these and then made even better stylus apps and support. Then I think it would be game over even for some of the tablet market.
One a separate NOTE, does anyone know if the Note2 is confirmed?

I had a kickstand on my HD7. Thought it was nice - at first. Later on...i never even used it. Phone would just fall down, and it was impossible to use it with any cable connected ( earphones ) cause it would - again - fall.
I like the idea of a kickstand, but i think it might be a bit hard to make it stable enough on such a large phone.

Sony Xperia Z2 wishlist

as the xperia z the z1 is as close to the perfect phone i can get but i thought i'd make a wishlist for the z2
1.i would like 4 speakers two on each side in the corner to utilize surround
2.the best screen you can get in a phone with the best black level and the best viewing angles (a sony developed oled would be amazing)
3.camera does not matter to me (but i guess a less noisy camera with xenon flash)
4.thinner bezels all around to give the phone a more sharp corners design (not too thin) (AND ABSOLUTELY no inner plastic like the z1 it slightly ruins that phone for me)
5.brushed metal finish at the back i read nfc won't work behind metal so not sure how to use that maybe put the nfc sensor at the side not back
6.fully customizable size/looks/color/theme and hidable onscreen buttons (hides in any fullscreen application) also customizable notification bar i like that the layer behind it dissappears when in the menu it looks nicer i want it like that always
7.able to use the phone everywhere in landscape mode menus and everything (it can be done if it's connected in the dock)
8.thinner metal frame all around matte black color (honestly i feel no difference holding the z1 from when i held the z)
9.4.6 or 4.7 inch screen like the htc one
The thin bezels
Oleophobic coating (without skin)
Optical stabilization
Support for 4K video recording to zoom during video recording
IPS or PLS screen for all versions
I really dont see a disadvantage in our not soooo small bezels. It is really anoying if you always have to hold the phone in a way that you dont touch the edge of the display and command something unwanted... Other new phones have that problem and many of my friends complained about that.

Better battery life
Better display and viewing
Bigger screen
Lighter
Smaller than z1 but 5.2" screen size
Lots of features
Better camera and video recording
Gorilla glass
I cant notice any difference when it comes to performance.
The only advantage of Z1 is its dust and water resistant and the presence of expandable storage. (except the Korean Variant)
My reason for shifting to Z1 is that my g2 was only 16gb and the 32gb is not available here.
But still I'm happy and satisfied with Z1...

My wish list would be:
thinner
Thinner bezels
IPS LCD screen
Floating touch technology
Android 4.4 out of the box
Better battery
And if possible, no covered ports
S Master Chip!

Z1 only has 16GB, so you moved to Z1 just for dust resistance & expandable storage ?
As for Z2, you know these fat bezels on the Z1 that everyone likes to gripe about ? i would like to see speakers in there like htc has.
I have this idea that sony is testing the market acceptability of a form factor like on the Z1.
From the LG G2: Screen, bezels/housing, battery and reception (wifi/gsm)
From the HTC One: Speakers and build quality
From the Z1: Camera (mixed with the G2 camera, OIS), build quality, water-proof and software/looks
That would be about it
well keeping it real..
i would love to see Z2 to have these features:
OIS, oh yes this has to be included in Z2...
better camera algorithm, we know Sony cams have good potential....
S-Master for Mobile, well not exactly the REAL S-Master we see in Walkman devices, but seeing these chips in the upcoming flagship Xperias would be nice
Oleophobic coating on screen and rear glass, THIS!! THIS!!!! i hate to keep the shatterproof sheet on as it scratches easily, using screenguard is annoying too as it also scratches easily while the screen itself is already pretty tough, but the screen is a goddamn fingerprint and dust magnet
better video Codec built-in
better viewing angle, it was kinda shocking to see my old Xperia V has way better viewing angle than Z1 which is supposedly to be a superior display with Triluminos...

Build quality? Z1 has better build quality than HTC One.
I've had s4 and htc one and wanted note 3 or nexus 5 untill I got Z1, I can honestly say Z1 is a keeper and I'm very happy with it.

Seriously? You got to be kidding with those three. And I'm not sure about battery life.
Anyway, All I wish for the Z2 is:
A BIGGER power button,
OIS,
If some act of God would make possible an uncovered-waterproof uncovered micro USB port,
a bit thinner, maybe just like the Z,
And maybe a better screen (although I'm very happy with it).
Maybe about the thing with bezels is that they should put physical buttons on that space.
camera without bubbles at zoom, better screen better than s amoled and dont know more for now
I actually would have bought it if it had an IR blaster.
I just really lol sometimes at the wishlist, if you seriously want all those kind ofa perfect features from a smartphone why don't you start manufacturing your own mobiles lol?

What do you think about Z2's size?

Do you think Z2 is too large for you?
Have any troubles?
Nope!!
It is by no means a handset to use with one hand!! But considering that I had a 5inch handset earlier and Z2 is actually more compact than that, I have No issues!!!
Size is really a small issue for me when it packs a plethora of features!! But yes, even though Galaxy S5 is compact than Z2, I wouldn't prefer it coz of poor aesthetics!
I wish it was a 5,5 instead of a 5.2!

I also own the Xperia Ultra so the Z2 is a tiny mobile in comparison. You do realise the futility of your question as what is large to one owner will be small to another? Its totally and utterly subjective.
Compared to my first mobile way back in the 80's this is tiny.

I like the size, the screen could be a bit bigger though. Sold my Note 3 and bought the Z2.
The other thing i dont like about the "size" is all the dead space around the screen. They could've easily have made the screen a bit bigger without making the phone itself notably bigger.

The biggest reason for the bezels is the 20mp camera, it's so thick that it has to be put above the screen
Just like my former S3 the screen is a bit to big for one hand usage. It's hard to pull down the notification menu with one hand, but GMD Gesture Control takes care of that. I have medium/large hands (male),
Using two hands is optimal though, and most of the time something you have to do.

No, it was hard to pull down the notification menu. Otherwise it was fine! the Z2 is a bit trickier though.
The size is just PERFECT, I don't like how Note 3 looks like, it feels gigantic to me. And it's not microscopic like iPhone series. Just great size.
Btw, I can use my hand with one phone. No actually, I can use my phone with one hand. Not as easy as iPhones though, but I still can.
As a 6 foot violinist with relatively large hands I find this phone perfect to hold. Lovely and think so I can reach the edges of the screen without too much hassle.

I like the dimensions of the phone and how thin it is. just seems kinda hard to hold. maybe with a more curved back similar to the M8 it would be a little better for me. I can cradle the M8 quite comfortable even for its monstrous size.
It's hard to grip on my hand. Long usage tends to hurt my palm, must be because of their omnibalance design. Not palm friendly at all [emoji17]

Look what I got

This seems to be a personal preference thing. Half the reviews think the Edge is nicer to hold and the other half don't like how sharp the sides are. Same with the M9 -- some reviewers like the extra grip from the lip but some felt it was uncomfortable and dug into their hands.

What else apart from the feel in hand makes you prefer the standard s6? I only had 20 minutes or so but decided on the standard due to it having:
sharper clearer screen
undistorted video viewing and images just looked better
better tempered glass protector and case fitting chances
This after being dead set on buying the edge, tell us your thoughts

The edge feels much to small, coming from a note 4 that might be expected of most phone but the edge felt a lot smaller then the s6. I also didn't like the fact that it's harder to see content on the edges cause it does wrap around, to me those "benefits" don't make up for the difference in price me, especially when I was all for the edge before I got to hold then both. Keep in mind though, that's just my opinion.

It's like you're explaining exactly how I felt. Gimmicky and disappointed is what I was left feeling when I was ready to make love to it as I walked in. Before all this I was cursing the standard one for being boring and nothing special. I was wrong
I think Samsung will increase its use later. But I watch a lot of video and like that crisper flatter screen

How big is the air gap of the display?

I always loved the laminated screens, yes even before apple sold it as innovation, and after seeing some videos it seems like the air gap of the Moto x style is pretty big. How visible is it in daily use if you are used to laminated screens for a long time?
Pretty sure it's laminated. If not, it must be a very small air gap because I don't notice much, if any, difference between how close the pixels are to the surface vs my wife's iPhone 6.
Thanks, that sounds good. I can see a gap though on most YouTube videos where the device is shown from different angles you can clearly see that the black edges of the screen disappear or get bigger depending on the angle. Which means there is a gap. But if it's not really noticeable on regular usage it would be fine for me. Still waiting for my ordered 64gb version in Germany. The delay is bad and makes me think about cancelling and getting an nexus 6p instead...

Hm. I haven't seen that, but maybe it's because I have the black front model. Possibly easier to notice on the white front model.
I have a white model and can't see any gap, regardless of viewing angle. If there is a gap, I can't see it.
It could also be from the rounded glass on the edge.
I had a GS6 before this and the gap is noticeably bigger on the Pure. It's not bad at all and you certainly habituate to it but it was noticeable.

Why are u moving from s6 to moto x if u don't mind me asking. For stock Android exp?
---------- Post added at 10:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:40 PM ----------
Definitely want minimal gap for this phone as well. Makes the screen seem to float.
Doubt there is air gap. Hardly any phones have air gap these days. Usually relegated to the lowest end phones with cheapest components. The 'gap' might be due to the moto x ha ing gorilla glass 3 and not 4. GG3 is thicker than 4. They both have same strength, just GG4 is thinner. It has made nice difference almost touching the actual display. My Motorola atrix is a canyon compared to my recent phones in regards to air gap.

Definitely want minimal gap for this phone as well. Makes the screen seem to float.

The S6 is my first Samsung device which is not a Nexus. I was hoping that they learned from their past mistakes but I found following issues:
- battery life was good at first and now it's just plain bad. In the morning I unplug the device with 100 %. And it loses 20 percent in the way to the office with only a few minutes onscreen time.
- I don't give a ... that the s6 has great benchmarks. In real life this hardware beast stutters and is slower than my old N5. This may be different for games, but I dont play 3d games on smartphones. I think TW is still the culprit here. Basically Samsung is using high end specs and killing them off with their stupid overlay. Even though the UI is getting better, the Samsung add ons to Android seem to bog down the whole experience.
- I hate the fact that I hit the capacitive buttons all the time when holding the device in landscape. That doesn't happen with onscreen buttons since my hands can rest on the bezel.
- the fingerprint scanner is slow as hell. It's a joke compared to my iPhone 6.
These are the reasons I really look forward to get the Moto x. For me they tick all the right boxes.

Could also be the case. But the result is the same for the users eye. It looks like a gap, I can clearly see the black edges changing their size depending on the angle you look at the device. But as most say it's not a huge thing I hope I'll be OK with it.
I was one of the people really hating the ipad air because of the gap. Back then my colleagues said it doesn't matter. But one year later Apple introduced the laminated screen. And everybody was freaking out.

Mostly that you keep claiming there is an air gap when you haven't even seen the phone in person. I have the phone in my hand and I don't think there is one, thought the glass might be a tiny bit thicker than the Galaxy S6. By the way, I looked at my friend's white iPhone 6 Plus and the black border around the edge of the display also changes size when viewing it from different angles, so I don't think that indicates that the screen isn't laminated.

The thread is a question. So I'm not claiming anything just stating what I can see on HD videos. And one guy with a s6 confirmed my impression. So it might be the screen glass, it might be an air gap. It doesnt matter, if the result is the same visually.
I was just curious to know and some people seem to notice it, others don't. Well my Moto X is already under way and I will see it myself soon.
Honestly the more I see about the Nexus 6p the more I like it. I'll get a nexus 6p as work phone and the style is my private phone. Eager to see which one will wind up becoming my main phone.
Lol. How contorted does your head or phone need to be for you to see this "air gap"? I've had a long list of phones and have never noticed what is being described in this thread. I must have issues.

This kind of reactions remind me of the discussions I had when the first devices with pentile amoled screens arrived back then (nexus one). It looked like crap, but one of the inventors tried to convince everybody on xda that the human eye can't see the pentile matrix on a hvga resolution.
The point is: it's great if you don't see it. Be happy.

The difference is with the air gap you have to view the screen from unnatural angles to see it.

No, that's not what it's about. With an air gap the image on the screen doesn't look like it's printed on the screen (which is more pleasant to the eye). And when you interact with the screen, a small or nonexistent air gap will have a better UX because it feels more immediate to touch an image which is as near to the screen/digitizer surface as possible.
The best example is the first ipad air. It felt totally awkward because the gap was huge. Much bigger than the previous ipads. Apple didn't make a big deal out of the laminated screen with no reason.
