I'd like Active Display(breathing) more if it wasn't so sensitive... - Moto X General

It's definitely not a battery issue, but it bothers me whenever the slightest tap sets off the clock popup. I don't think it's a case issue since I use a light-weight one (Poetic slim case). I would like to think that the context-processor responds to the disruption in the magnetic field which is why it's so sensitive. I can't test this though.....Does anyone happen to have a flip cover for the Moto X?

I use an app called uListen so I can stream YouTube videos with my screen off. I've noticed that app makes the active display go nuts.

It acts when the phone moves simulating you picking it up. When I'm on my recliner it activates every time I move in the recliner. It does what it is meant to do I like it for checking the time and not having to activate the phone.

Turn the phone over so the screen is facing down. Problem solved.

I love it. I pick the phone up and just swipe to wake. Then with a Nova Launcher gesture (swipe up to toggle Quick Settings) and a custom Sleep tile in the bottom right thanks to GravityBox, I've probably cut my mashing on the power button by probably 95%. I barely have to touch it anymore.

I love the active display but it does annoy me when I'm driving. I stick it in the cup holder and every time the truck moves, the screen turns on and I can see it out of the corner of my eye. And I don't know if anyone else lives in PA, but trying to avoid the potholes and inevitably hitting one keeps the screen on almost the entire time...
I also found I now pick up my Nexus 7 expecting the screen to turn on automatically

Hahaha, I've done the same with my Galaxy Nexus and even my wife's Razr Maxx.
PA here too... and the potholes have become unbearable.

I really like the sensitivity... I think its great that it will pop on virtually anytime I move the phone, but not to the point of wasting my battery. I swear there have been times where I could just wave my hand over the phone and it would flick the time and lock up, but maybe it was just in my head.
I hear ya all on the Nexus 7 deal, I do the same from time to time, just expect it to turn on. Would be something easy for Google to add moving forward though.

Well that just defeats the purpose of the active display
But mine is very sensitive as well. Even when there is no movement I will see it go on . Doesn't really bother me. Only when I use another phone...I end up shaking the phone to get the active display to show

Do you Assist app for driving? I've noticed that after I'm driving for a couple minutes the phone must turn down the active notifications as it won't turn on with little bumps. Sometimes it won't even turn on when I pick it up.
But sitting in my house, it'll turn on every time I bump it.

Cover the proximity sensor and it'll assume it's face down or in your pocket.
The proximity sensor is on ALL the time, and it is used in conjunction with the accelerometer to turn on the screen. If you don't want it to turn on in certain situations, do the above.
I cover it with my microfiber screen wiping cloth sometimes when I want it face up but without AN.

Touch screen occasionally messed up

Hi,
I've got some weird problems with my N1. I searched around but couldn't find the solution.
I've tried CM7 stable 7.0.3 and Nighties 87 builds, and this problem happens to both.
1. When I'm running an app, such as "plants vs zombies", or typing with keyboard, when I touch a spot, it thinks I touch another spot. For example, when I touch key "D", it may give me a "space". When I try to place a plant on the left side, it puts it on the right side.
2. When I'm watching videos with MoboPlayer, the screen is locked sometimes (maybe this is a setting that I don't know, how do I turn this feature off?). When I press the "menu" button, it was supposed to unlock the screen, but it actually unlocks and locks back and forth continuely, and the phone keeps vibrating.
All the problems will be gone if I just lock the phone and unlock again. However, it will come back after a while.
Please help and thank you very much!

Yep, always been a problem with the Nexus One and often on capacitive touchscreens when plugged into a charger. You've stated the known workaround.

I see. Thanks.
Just turn off the screen then back on, it clears this bug and only takes a second.
All nexus ones have this issue.
I traveled from Singapore to the States for about 2 weeks in May and I suddenly had this issue too. I never had it for the 16 months I owned it back here in Singapore. And when I got back after my 2 weeks trip, the problem never occurred at all again.
I'm guessing that it has to do with either the temperature or humidity levels.

I agree with you. I think it has to do with humidity specifically because it happens only when I just left from the bathroom (taking a shower) and there is a vapor, then the touch gets crazy!

Iv'e only had it a few times in about 16 months. But, it's very dry here in Vegas wih very low humidity!
I've had this issue from day one with the nexus one. For me atleast it triggers everytime I have the phone plugged in and I'm using the phone at a 90 degree angle, like sideways in bed, very strange.

I have similar problems as mentioned irregularly, but sometimes switching the screen off and on doesn't fix it at all. It's not very humid where I live (except when it's raining). Has anyone else considered replacing the digitizer (the touchscreen panel) of the phone, and if this would fix the problem?

I sent my N1 back to HTC for warranty repair because of this issue. They did something and sent it back saying all good now. The issue occurs less frequently now but it is there.
I suspect there is something in the trackball area that generates EMF of certain qualities (frequency?) and it interferes with the screen circuitry due to poor shielding and close proximiy.

this is definitely a design flaw of N1, the touchscreen controller chip just SUCKS

Screen responding without touching it

Does anyone else have their screen respond without touching it?
I've noticed this in go sms. On the conversation list, the last one on the screen is sometimes pressed without me touching it. I will press back and it just goes back into it.
I recently noticed in web browsing too where the screen would refresh on its own. I clued in that the refresh button is on the bottom of the screen.
Seems like the bottom maybe 2 cm of the screen sometimes responds on its own.
Is there any app that I can see where the screen is being pressed?
Settings, Developer options, Show Touches
That will visually show you where any screen touches are occurring. The screen is a bit sensitive for me sometimes, but I haven't seen anything crazy yet.

Yep, but not on this phone yet...
I say not yet because it's happened to me on almost every one of my touch screen phones. It seems to happen to me when the air is dry and I bet it has to do with there being more static electricity around. On those days when you're shocking everything you touch, those are the days when my phones seem to act up. It happened on my G1, my vibrant, Droid1, Droidx, and two of my bionics. All of the problems went away although on my 1st bionic it was really bad and almost completely unusable. The next day it was back to normal. Maybe it's just gremlins.
answer:
it happens if/when you use a DIFFERENT charger for the phone. you should be using the charger that comes with the phone. If you use a different charger (from a G1 or from a razr or something), then the screen tends to mess up, even when off the charger.

For those of you with this problem, try pulling the battery out for a minute or two and also try touching something metal if you can. You know to discharge any static built up. (Worth a shot right) When I had this problem on my Sensation everyone was reporting that it was the charger they were using. I don't know if that was correct because the problem went away even though I was still using two different chargers. One charger was for the GNEX (same as GS3) and the other was the HTC charger. I really think it has to do with static electricity build up. If you think about the way these digitizers work it really makes sense. It seems to happen to me during spring time when it's dry and windy.

That is a good theory, but why would the static shock only be hitting the bottom part of the screen?
i don't know why. but i'm sure it's the charger. this happened back in the G1 days when android first came out. i did so many "experiments" with different chargers to figure out what was causing the screen to be all glitched like this. found out it was the charger. same thing happened with my vibrant, and same thing happened with my sisters sgs2.

If you touch the screen, it responds in whatever app you happen to be in. I can't get it to work either. I'm guessing there will be a software update in the next couple of weeks to fix. Whether AT&T releases it is another matter.

I can do it every time. Use the whole side of your hand and slide it across the screen end to end. Maybe the Note II trained me how to do it...
I too had trouble with this on my SIII when I first got it until I started doing what Bjray explained, you don't use your palm, you use the side of your palm as if you're chopping something, then brush from one side of the screen to the other, starting OFF the screen's edge on one side, and moving kind of quickly to the other.... practice makes perfect, even if you do look pretty silly doing it! There's definitely no software update that needs to occur for you to get what we're saying and screen shot every time

Nope. Just tried it in low light, bright light, turned it off and on again. Which "Samsung gesture" things do you have turned on? I have some of them off (smart pause, etc). Maybe there's something there, or maybe my sensor isn't sensing...some of them did work though, so I don't think its that. Power/Home works fine, but it still bothers me that I can't get it to work.

Do you place your phone screen-side up or down?

i have an acase superleggera for my n4. i've always placed my phones screen-side up whenever i set them down on a table, but with this case, i'm finding that i have to reverse my thinking. the design of the back of the case is so perfectly flat that it severely muffles the speaker if i place my phone screen-side up. it's quite an adjustment to have to make. i always forget and place my phone down screen-side up.
so anyway... my situation prompted me to start this thread. i'm just genuinely curious as to how everyone else sets down their phone!
Same problem here. I place my phone screen side up, and i don't hear half of my notifications in time. When the speaker is not muffled i can hear the notifications.. Something i've accepted about my phone, just like the poor camera performance, but i still think it's the best android experience on the market. (At least till the google edition phones are out).
Anyways, i don't think there is something we can do about it, i surely don't plan to start placing it screen side down, i'd rather miss notifications than get my screen scratched.

this is the biggest reason i like to leave my phone screen-side up. i didn't spend all that time customizing my led notifications in light flow just to turn my phone over!
Usually side up, so I can read notifications by just have a look on it everytime the phone shake, with the NiLS app
Screen side down at night to keep the room dark plus I can hear my alarm better in the AM.
Screen down now that I have a screen protector. I can actually hear the notifications now

Screen down so I can show off my sexy carbon fibre back =D
Usually have screen side up, but hang the edge of the phone with the speaker off of the table a little so I can hear notifications. At bed side table I put it face down. I use a bumper that adds a little room to both sides so the glass is never touching surfaces. That said, I can't wait until front facing speakers are the norm.

I don't ever set mine down =/ no case or anything but still looks brand new.

Usually screen-up. HOWEVER, the back of the my N4 is just so cool, I sometimes, just to show off, put it face-down. I almost always have my phone in a bumper case.
I have a generic TPU case and the same problem. I found a pair of these and stuck them to the bottom like two feet raising the phone so i can finally hear AND see notifications

Great idea!!! But...Is it possible to fall off?
I use the Ringke Fusion case which has 4 bumpers on the back of the phone. This way, I can put the phone screen-up and still hear the notifications.
Mostly screen-up. I had some very bad experiences with my OneX, wich i constantly screen-downed.
After some months the screen definitely didn't feel as good anymore as it used to, because many small microscratches wich you can't even see, but you feel the touchscreen is getting "worse" or just doesn't feel as good anymore.
That's why I rarely place my n4 screen-down, only when I want to stop seeing the led plusing all the time because some idiots spamm in whatsapp groups (god, I want a function to turn notifications off for single groups/contacts...).
But then I'll also place it on my wallet, so it doesn't scratch...
Almost always up!
It depends for me. When I need to hear my phone (such as an alarm when I go to bed or if I have it out of sight), I play it screen side down so that the speaker isn't blocked. Otherwise, if it's in sight, I place it screen side up so I can see the LED light for notifications.
Upside or else i wont here anything from it
Acase Superleggera Pro, and I leave the phone screen side up.
Depends on the case I'm using. I usually switch it up from time to time.
1.) Screen-side up when using my Nilkin Hard Case.
2.) Screen-side down when using my Rearth Hybrid Fusion case since it has a lip in front and see through back.

Screen keeps pulsing even with no notification

I did a Google search for this and couldn't find anything that matched my issue. I thought there was a post on XDA about something similar but nothing came up.
I have 'approach for moto display activated'. I have all other moto activations deactivated.
I have 'wake screen on moto display' activated. I prefer to wave my hand to wake my screen.
I have noticed that when I'm driving, the phone keeps waking the screen. It's like the phone is thinking I'm moving the phone but I thought I had all those options turned off. There isn't anything making movements over the IR sensors.
Am I mistaken when I think the screen should not come on when it senses motion?
Yeah, I also think the sensitity is way too high... I have it sitting next to me on the desk @work about 50cm away.... display goes on all the time... annoying ._.

The phone senses movement and will wake. Put it on a pillow or something and gently move the pillow. The display will wake. Same principle in vehicle. Any jarring or bouncing motion will wake display. The phone won't do this if its face down or on it's side.
An option to disable the movement wake would be great. I'm surprised they don't have the option along with the approach option.

Face down doesn't help when you're using the speakers.
A double tap to wake option in a custom kernel would be beneficial IF it would be feasible with this processor.

I totally agree.
I thought mine was doing that too but after testing it yesterday on the way home I think that it's my hand that's activating it. I have the phone mounted on an air vent next to the steering wheel and when my hand is up there it activates the screen, if it's not there it doesn't seem to come on at all even going over bumps etc.
Maybe you have something similar? I have all of the assist option on and it's in driving mode during this.
Mine does the same, but it was on a table far enough from me to not be triggered by movement, just reproducing some music. If it s also sensible to that it doesn't make sense. I already had to switch off moto voice cause it got triggered by almost everything, even the runtle of the fridge. If I have to switch off all the moto functionalities cause they work bad well than I could have bought another phone.
Have to say I agree here. I would love to be able to either adjust the sensitivity to movement of durable the move to wake while keeping the proximity and turned on.
