[GUIDE] Fixing Insatgram/Vines video upload errors/crashes - Galaxy S III General

Since i first installed Instagram i had troubles uploading videos, recorded with Insta app and loaded from gallery, with both ROMs I used ( stock Samsung and current one OmniROM )
I read this is a very common problem and no, it isnt Instagram app error but ROM fault as many Nexus5/other phones can upload videos (read in internet)
follow these steps to prepare your video:
Record your favourite video with you camera, MAX ALLOWED TIME 15s for Instagram
Instagram accepts only two sizes: 480x480 - 680x680. If it is bigger it will zoom it in center to fit it needs, so take it in account when editing video, for example i recorded a full hd video with my S3 and then i edited it to 720x720 adding black borders.
Rotate your video 90° degrees anti-clockwise (Instagram seems to rotate video on upload)
MP4 video format
time to open Instagram! :
Open Instagram app
Record about 20s of video
Press HOME button, leaving Instagram app opened in background
Go to sdcard/Android/data/com.instagram.android/files/video/random_named_folder/your_just_recorded_video.mp4 - that's the folder where Instagram save your just recorded video
Copy in this folder your video you want to upload
Rename your video with the Instagram created one and then delete Instagram video
Resume from background Instagram
Press right upper corner blue arrow and then you'll see your video in preview!!
Some side notes: On OmniROM it doesnt work, everytime Instagram crashes, so you have to use another/stock rom. I used FreeMake "Free Video Converter" to adapt my S3 full hd video to Instagram format. I first made it 15s long by selecting only part i wanted to upload. Then i created under Convert->Android label a new custom profile with: MP4 - 720x720 - Cropping style: Original - other fields default. Then i converted my video and did steps i just wrote. If you dont like Instagram video preview just play a bit with resolution/cropping way in Video Converter, i just wrote what i used
higher video bitrate will produce better quality and bigger videos, i tried with 8000 Kbps and it works, however Instagram will take more time to process your video!

At least we have a working way until rom devs fix your current rom
This tut can also be used for Vine and other phones/tablets/ROMs !!

Good guide pal but too much hassle for a 15sec video thumbs up though

Good tutorial but how about instagram/vine fix their app
Since I got the SGS3 I haven't managed to post one video on the official ROM. And it's not really time efficient to waste 10 minutes or so of editing for a 15s video.

Process: All are done using 1 video
Top 3 underlined are what I used for all videos
1 (Half or Full)
Half = 400x240
Full = 800x480
2 No Aspect ratio as you customized your size, if there is, just restart SUPER
3 I used original video framerate
4 (528 or 1008) "written in file name"
5 Uncheck them all
Did you notice that checking top quality made the video actually worse? I think it goes same with High Quality, I've tested it, but not posting it
6 Well whats a good video without at least 128 audio
NQ means all unchecked or I made it a term for No Quality (but is highquality actually depending on your bitrate ) See 5 above
not tested = no point in testing, there is a better one
Files
( 29.1 MB )Keep Your Mind Wide Open FULL 1008 NQ.MP4
( 16.8 MB )Keep Your Mind Wide Open FULL 528 NQ.MP4
( 24.6 MB )Keep Your Mind Wide Open HALF 1008 NQ.MP4 (best, no lags, 100%+ in benchmark)
( 16.8 MB )Keep Your Mind Wide Open FULL 528 NQ.MP4 (not tested)
( 16.7 MB )Keep Your Mind Wide Open HALF 528 HQ.MP4 (not tested)
Core Player Settings
Just ask me which you need, i think mines in default except for orientation
Best fit since its 400x240
Core v1.3.0 build 6213
If someone can make a rapidshare, megaupload link besides this one, it would help me alot. I have limited bandwidth.
Hope this helps
i tried this one, when i set up bitrate to 1000kb/s or more, the video will be much laaaaagger.. lol useless of this software. i'd like to stick to projection's Encoder for HD .
Super works not very well under Vista.
I'm using FormatFactory now, very easy to use and it is FREE.
yeah it started laggy to me too when i was converting some vids, mustve been the original source video. I'm not sure super converts them perfectly, the encoder for hd for me lags lol, well not in all videos, so most likely we all still have to wait. Will try again with that bad video source
Just pointing out that setting it to 400x240 might be better just increase the zoom or fit best when playing rather than auto set to 800x480. Going a couple of full movies, too bad i cant batch with different settings

For those looking for a video converter that works

greetings! im still new to these forums (and to the atrix, only had it for a week), but i figured i'd share something that some people might find interesting.
http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-Video-to-Motorola-Phones-Converter.htm
DVDVideoSoft have been around for a while making a bunch of free video converters for many applications. however, previously it was a bit messy and finicky to make a suitable profile for a particular device since you had to edit the xml file and try to figure out a decent setting for certain vids.
i noticed that a while back they disabled the ability to edit the xml files to create your own video converting profiles, so i stopped using them.
but randomly i figured id give them a go again today. found out that they added a preset editor so we can create our own profiles to suit our motorola atrix.

"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
ive circled the button that allows you to tap into the preset editor.
these are the settings im using to convert for my atrix. 960x540 resolution.
i recommend setting the framerate to 30fps. if your source video is running at less than 30fps, the program will stick to the same framerate as the source video. however, if you set the framerate lower than the source video's framerate, you'll lose frames.
as for bitrate, i havent had much time to mess around with it. 2.5mbps looks pretty, but you should able to go as low as 1.5mbps with minimal sacrifice on image quality, and it will make the file size a lot lower.
with audio bitrate, this is a personal preference. i dont like going below 192kbps, but some people wont notice the difference.
after that, just rename the profile to whatever you'd like, and happy converting.
the program isnt the fastest available, but its simple and works well enough. the videos play well on my atrix using the default video player and look pretty awesome.
enjoy!
Thank ye very much.
Testing now.
It's main test: Softsubs.
Gotta get my anime fix on the go.
Report: Does not work on .ass type softsubs.

First one as original... 2nd one after zooming in.... and 3rd one below full stretched even whn its not zoomed in ... only this video coming proper... rest are all cut from side and top.
here are 2 things that u ca do
1) try playing the vids without converting
2) try any other video player (mvideo player from market)
Try using rockplayer and at the bottom there's the stretch/eesize options. Also try not to convert as our phones fit it to size.

Hmmm, when I downloading something from youtube it is in mp4 format, not flv.
Sent from my super fast Galaxy 3
Actually you can download both mp4 and flv from youtube, sometimes there is only low resolution videos that can only be downloaded as flv.
To make the job easy you can include some extensions or addons to your browser.
You can use "Chrome YouTube Downloader" for Chrome and "DownloadHelper" for firefox. Both of them give you the option to chose between mp4 and flv.
Finally, if you want full screen videos you have to convert videos to the "aspect ratio" of your mobile. I think in this case "aspect ratio" is more important than resolution.
Good luck

Custom Instagram Video Upload Tutorial (Root or Not) With Pictures

This is a tutorial on how to upload your own personally made videos to Instagram. Root or not these instructions will work.
I want to thank my beautiful wife for helping me with the non-rooted method testing.
What you need-
1- The vid you want to use
2- Video editing software
3- A cellphone or tablet (rooted or stock)
4- An explorer to look around in your phone (Astro FIle Explorer/ES File Explorer/Solid Explorer)
What you need to do-
1- Cut the vid into a 16 second clip. You can push for maybe 20 seconds. But So far I've only uploaded a 16 and haven't gone any further.
2- Format the vid into MPEG4 and you need to get it to a 1:1 ratio. 640 x 640 the display should be....no more than that. (If you happen to not get it into that display........Instagram will format it for you. So make sure that whatever you want displayed is in the middle.)
3a- After you format the video to all those lovely settings and all that......you need to turn it to the left because it will go from this-
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
3b- To this-
4- Save your 16 second clip onto either the memory card or the internal storage. (I made a folder called "Custom" and stored all those clips in there.)
Here's the fun part-
1- Open up Instagram
2- Record a vid and hold it for the complete 16 seconds
3- Press the home button and for those wondering....yes that's my son :laugh: :good:
4- Open up your favorite Explorer for your phone. I personally use Solid Explorer cause of the dual screen action when you turn your phone side ways. As you can see in the pic. Under the picture is the path you should take.
/storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.instagram..android/files/videos/VID_(whatever numbers follow)_session_0
5- Press and hold the file that Instagram made and copy the file name. Should be "VID_(Numbers)_(Numbers).mp4."
6- Now rename the file you made that's in your "Custom" or "Whatever" folder, to the "VID_(Numbers)_(NumberS).mp4"
7a- If you're using Solid Explorer then you can press and hold your new vid for the menu. Press "Move To <-" and make sure you select "Overwrite." (The small icon for the vid might not change but trust me...your new video is there.)
7b- If you're using a different explorer you have to cut the newly made vid from your storage folder over to the Instagram folder and paste. (The small icon for the vid might not change but trust me...your new video is there.)
8- Once you're done all you have to do is switch over to Instagram....press the little green arrow top right hand corner. Let it process and go about uploading like normal. And you're done. Enjoy the many people liking your newly made vids.
If you care to follow me on Instagram and see my custom vids or my son, lol feel free to add me- http://instagram.com/jokerx2
I'm also taking requests to make vids if you're having a hard time converting or editing. I can also add subtitles to videos if you require or want them. I have a Wilfred vid up with subs. That was my first attempt so I know they're flying by as the vid is playing, lol.

Watched the video you linked and a few others without issues
I am assuming you have enabled hdr and super cinema mode in the display settings?
I have both enabled and the issue persists. Did you use official youtube app? It works fine form me in browser. Can you check whether video quality states HDR?
Looks fine on China ROM.
Edit: I don't have the black spots during playback. I'm surprised they just appeared on the screenshot itself. LOL.

I tried in the official YouTube app as last time I watched the footage threw the browser. Again the video played perfectly could fast forward rewind continually pause it and could not recrate the issue, quality Was definitely set to hdr.
As above though when I tried to take a screen shot to show it's working ok on mine, it recreates the same result your getting in the screenshot. But the video playback is no issue, i am also on the global ROM.

SKYW1903272OS01MP1
Same issue in global version. SKYW1903272OS01MP1
It seems it is partially fixed in version SKYW1905210S01MP2. The issue is only visible when video is rotating (change of orientation).
