HELP: Unable to return defective note (box missing) - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) General

I bought an open box note 10.1 a month ago but it turned out to be defective (screen frequently unresponsive on wake up) . I tried to replace it but they told me they need the box because it has the serial number. I lost the box but the serial is already stored on the device. My question is:1- Do they have the right to refuse replacing the device for not having a box 2- What should I do in this situation?
P.S I have one year warranty.

Where did you buy it? Seems most notable retailers, (bestbuy, frys, staples..etc) would have mo problem so long as you are within your return window. Although sometimes those items can be sold "as is". It would state in your reciept. It seems like a simple conversation with the manager would solve the problem.
Worst case, just have Samsung give you an RMA. I'm sure they will have no problem with that.
Sent from my SM-P600 using Tapatalk

Just a suggestion, always keep the original box at least until the end of the warranty period. Besides that, contact samsung, if the retailer won't do anything you can always just request service.

I bought it from souq.com. I've already passed the return window (2 weeks) but still have 11 months in warranty.

So in case the retailer refused to give me a replacement, how can I contact samsung about it? and how easy is it to get a replacement?

You can search how to contact samsung on samsung website, it depend on your country, for US this is the link to find service location http://www.samsung.com/us/support/service/location
Then is up to samsung decide if you need a replacement or a repair.

serial number is on the back if it isn't worn off. you may need a magnifying glass to read it.

This does not sound legit.
Via my Note 3

So they have a 14 day return policy, after 30 days you want to return it, they won't let you and you want to know if they have the right to refuse replacement?
Yes they do, even if you had the original box. You are outside the return period. Now it is up to Samsung to repair or replace under warranty.

Looks like the OP is from Ismailia, Egypt. Most likely a language issue.

Have you tried to contact someone through the Samsung Ismailia Facebook page They maybe able to help you.

Looks like I need to make some clarifications here:
1- I don't want to return the device, I want to have it replaced (repaired at least). I've already edited the OP but failed to edit the title.
2- I bought the device from UAE via souq uae, and it has Souq.com Guarantee for one year
3- When I contacted souq.com they said they need the box because it has the serial number of the device. The box is lost.
Now I'm at a loss about what to do next.
I hope I made myself clear this time

Is the serial number on the back of the device?
Have you registered the device with Samsung?

The device has no serial number on its back. but you can get the serial from settings > about phone > status .. or calling *#60#
I don't know what you mean by registering the device.

IMEI restored after /efs wipe with no backup

I'm not sure what the rules are about advertising a particular service. I'm sure a moderator will help if necessary.
I know a great many people lost their IMEI by wiping their /efs folder, either by flashing a ROM with a fault or by deleting it deliberately without knowing what the consequence would be.
I went to two Samsung Certified Repair centres, and neither were able to fix my phone. I then phoned the Samsung helpline, and they agreed to fix it under warranty at their main repair centre in the UK (contractors: Regenersis) even though I bought the phone on ebay.
After about 10 days, my phone is back and the IMEI is restored.
I know lots of people have the same issue, so I phoned Regenersis customer service: 0844 338 0254
They agreed that they will fix this problem for anyone, but she was very firm that the company could not confirm a price without first seeing the phone. I tried to explain that the problems would all be identical, but she was totally firm. I tried to explain I was hoping to send more business their way out of goodwill for my repair. She remained firm!
Their website is: http://www.regenersis.com/our-locations/uk/glasgow
In summary:
If your phone is under warranty and registered with Samsung, you can probably do the same thing as me, which is request a repair over the phone, and they should refer you to regenersis (if you are in the UK). I was completely honest about it being my fault, and that I bought the phone off ebay. I was however still able to register it on the Samsung website under my name. (When I sent it off I was asked to provide proof of purchase so I printed off my ebay receipt)
If your phone is not under warranty, go directly to Regenersis.
Maybe this will give others some hope!
Again, I apologise if this is against forum rules, but as far as I know, no other post has any advise about fixing this issue.
Can you tell me how much it cost to you? I'm with the same problem and I down't know what to do with it
I have no warranty, and I'm far away from the UK

Don't worry Regenersis is not limited to UK. They have their offices in Germany, Poland, UK, Romania and Russia.
Unfortunately I have to say that Polish department doesn't have good reputation. Some people reported that smart phones came in worse condition than before service. Just wanted you to know any potential danger It's not that it's a "rule". It just happened couple of times. Too many as I see it.
I've just contacted local official Samsung service center, and they told me that they can't help me because my phone is not bought in Croatia. This one is from Switzerland.
They also told me that there is two ways to fix it. First one would be reverting factory settings with stock ROM and everything else (tried that myself with no success). And another option is to change motherboard (around 200€)...
I will be in Germany soon, so I'll try to contact Regenersis there...
Btw. I'm still trying to fix my nv_data.bin and other files in efs partition
The mother board was not changed, the files were rebuilt. The IMEI was restored to the one on the sticker.
Even though I was very clear that it was my own actions that corrupted the efs data, they treated it as a warranty repair. Perhaps the person I spoke to at Samsung were just being extra nice. My lucky day?

Yes. I first dealt with the online service request, and detailed everything I had done.

Can you ask them how did they do that without replacing motherboard ? I want to knoooooooow .
I sent my Nexus into a service center almost 2 weeks ago and just received an email saying that my repair is on hold because they had to order parts. WTF who knows when the heck I'll ever get this thing back.
I'm in Arizona USA, the service center is in Texas. I played stupid and told them my phone just froze up and I had to pull the battery, then had no service/imei ect... Forgot to mention I had flashed a CM7 nightly kang plus kernel that same day LOL.

My phone is in service for that same exact reason too! I just checked the status of the repair order and it said that they replaced the components. So I assume they replaced the entire motherboard and not simply recreate my imei.

suggestions for backup of /efs directory?
first of all, thank you, bedalus, for suggesting the simple and obvious solution of sending the phone back for repair. I was completely stumped prior to that.
I am in the USA, and sent my phone to Texas. it was back in my hands about 10 days later, with no charge or complaints from Samsung. I was unable to figure out how to remove ClockworkMod, so I simply did not mention it, but I did say that the whole thing was my fault. I did do "adb oem lock" before sending it back. when it came back, it had the stock recovery image.
it also had the /efs directory fixed. I have my IMEI back and showing something other than "unknown". so my Nexus S is working again as a telephone.
I have looked around for the best way to back up the /efs directory on a Nexus S, but could not find anything. so I have started a thread asking about a reliable backup plan. if anyone has direct experience, I would appreciate reading it in that thread.

Replacement process

My launch-day Nexus 4 has the rattling and earpiece buzzing problem and I'm interested in getting a replacement to see if they have resolved the issues.
I'm curious as to what the replacement process entails for this phone? Do I go through Google Play or LG? Do I have to send it back first or do they send one first? Also, do they sent out refurbished models or new ones?

The process is that you call Google, they set up an RMA if they feel it's a hardware problem. You don't contact LG, EVER. The just of it is you phone google, they troubleshoot the problem. If they feel this is a defect, not as a result of carelessness.
(Basically I'm telling you, if you phone in, you can't say you've ever dropped it, and that it's had this problem since day one. I'd go as far to say that you "may have used your friends' Nexus and found that his doesn't do the same and sounds clearer on calls")
They will give you an RMA number, and email you a printable UPS label, at this point, you may send your phone back, using the free UPS label, back. At the same time they issue you this label, they put in a request that a brand new unit be shipped to you. If your phone is still functional, keep your phone, and wait for the new one to arrive, then ship yours out the day you get the new one. You have 30 days to return your old phone once the new one ships. If you fail to return the old phone, they charge the new one to your google account.

According to Google, you only have 15 days from the date of delivery to request a replacement or refund. Beyond 15 days, you have to contact LG.

Edit: Apparently, after 15 days, you still have to contact Google customer support. The service is no longer done by Google Play though, it's based on your LG 12 month warranty.

Dead S4 :(

I bought an AT&T S4 32gb from ebay brand new a week ago. It was working well & it was never rooted or custom rom installed.
I slept & woke up & this phone wasnt responding to anything i do. No boot or power at all, checked battery it looks fine & voltage output is 4.21.
I didnt open the phone, though it never got water/liquid damage. Another thing strange is its not even heating up from any side.
Wrote this thread in hope, if anyone has had in this situation & made it work again.
Im truthful to every line i wrote. Need solutions.

Yes you are right but i can only claim warranty if i stay in USA & if i have the receipt, which i dont have. I cant claim warranty locally as its an AT&T phone which is only sold in US.

Samsung doesnt want to help if he is outside the usa because it is the usa based device so they will only service it within the usa I believe via UPS mailing since they ship back only to a usa address.
Why don't you open a ebay/paypal claim to get your money back?

I don't think it is unfair. You paid for a product that obviously was defective as it died randomly. If I buy a item from a store I expect to work, not die randomly to suck it up. Even though its a used item, you shouldn't deal with issues that perhaps the previous owner did not tell you.

It should still be covered and you can print your Paypal receipt as proof that it was brand new if the title of the auction says brand new. I think it should be covered. You will need to register it with Samsung for warranty service. Toucan do that on their website. You probably won't even have to mention where you bought it.

He is India and bought a device only covered for warranty within U.S.A terrority by law. They wouldn't be forced to service an out of country warranty. Same deal happened to my friend in europe with a U.S.A tmobile s4. He ended up shipping it to me so I could ship to them.
Then again its soley by Samsungs choice. He could try contacting their international department to see if they'll honor it for him.

They may service it for him. I'd play with it more. Its unusual for a phone to just die like that but something could have shorted out in it. I don't know how good the electricity in India is.
I say give it a try. Call sammy and also file a claim with PayPal. He should stand by his product.

Im really disappointed at your suggestions, making a paypal claim is my last resort.
As previously, i bought a captivate which died the same way after a month, of i did claim thru paypal i ended up losing both phone & money.
Yes Samsung may help, international samy will not bother to help & if its USA samy i must have to call from a valid US no. right?
Hello Febby, u gave me a good suggestion, ur frnd sent it to u, but can i as im limited by the person i know in USA.
Frankly, i just wanna try something myself, to make it work & btw electricity is good, but its a little costly where i stay & power cuts are limited.
My S4 screen cracked, they never asked for a proof of purchase (but then again, they took my $200 to fix it). Maybe look into something like VIAddress, they provide a US address for you to tell companies to ship to and they'll forward it to a big number of countries for some fee.

OK viaddress are they reliable, how much time do they take. They didnt ask cuz u paid for it, mine is diff then urs, as its totally dead... no response at all. They might ask
I've never used VIAddress, but I've sold several thing on eBay to people who used almost identical addresses that went to this freight complex in an pharma/industrial part of our country, New Jersey. One person was Chinese and the other Russian. So I'm guessing they used this or another forwarding service... it must be good if they used it.
True, Samsung might ask you, but I think the warranty will stand by serial number and not owner. I've sold a Galaxy S3 to someone and AT&T at least, assured us that there would be no problems with the other guy making a claim.

Probably nothing you can do because as far as anything official is concerned it's now a stolen phone especially if the carrier paid out an insurance claim or gave him a replacement phone. Trying to activate it on another carrier might even get you a visit from the police (for having 'stolen' property or for fraud). Probably the best course of action would be to just return the phone to the carrier saying that he 'found' it or that it was returned to him or something and call it a lesson learned...
It's Black listed and therefore it won't work anymore without doing some illegal stuff to it. Don't buy the phone unless you don't want to use it as a phone. .... Just a multimedia device.

You should report the fraudster too!
It's people like him who are causing rising premiums on insurance - it is not a "victimless" crime!

You'd rather them put a hold on your card, and ship you a new one while you ship them the old one (how a return works if they don't make you send the old phone in, wait for them to receive it, and then send you a new one).
Seems refund and buying it again is easier for all involved.

I' rather they ship the replacement and collect the faulty one when they drop off. I've had that service from previous on-line stores.
In terms of the cost - I paid by paypal so I am already in debt to £640 and now I have to find a further £640 until they process my refund - It's not how it should be.
Also - I offered to go to my local Samsung store to do a swap but that is not an option.
I f I had bought from CPW on-line (which I now wish I had) If it was faulty I could have returned it to any store fore an exchange.
I love Samsung products - I have had many but I am just disappointed with their after service.
I got my pre-ordered one at the store today. Checked specifically for this problem, and, boom, there it was. Replaced a new one right away.
Sorry to hear about Samsung online not replacing products in warranty. They are doing the same on me at the moment with a faulty screen. I'm going to have another go at them. All I want is a replacement....
No issues with mine.
I would suggest going to your nearest Samsung store for a replacement.

As I say - that is not an option for Samsung! Quite annoying that the Shop just refused to show any interest and say if bought on line I must deal with the problem on line.

I'm going to spend this afternoon phoning them up to get a replacement. The contact number in the UK for the shop is +44(0)1628 918334
They take 1 minute to attempt to answer a call. Which is true, getting them to send a replacement appears to take a lot longer

That's BS. Expecting you to go without until they have received the device and then processed a refund (which takes long enogh itself). I would suggest ringing them and not giving in, request an escalation.
Ok, just finished on a call after escalating to the UK call centre manager. They have just sent me this email:-
Looks like they will ask you to keep the VR headset, refund you and arrange collection of the device.
After that just go to Carphone warehouse and buy a new one:-
Thank you for contacting Samsung UK Shop.
As promised, we are sending you an e-mail, with which, we would open the returns case. Would you, please, advise me on a convenient for you collection date for your faulty device and if you could provide us with the pictures, that replicate the fault, so that I could add them to our records.
I would attempt to contact you once again by the end of the working day to provide you with an update regarding the procedure and to confirm the collection date.
Thank you for your patience and I remain at your disposal.
Thank you for contacting us.
Regards,
I thought it was because I had the plastic still over top of it, but I've noticed this too. As far as I can tell that's the only issue though, I have no pixel issues, no tint issues, no screen issues at all that I can see so rather than risk it I'm just going to keep it. Not that big of a deal.
Old phone now returned and new one purchased.
Home button on new one is working fine I'm pleased to say.

I am having this exact same issue with my S7 Edge bought from Samsung UK online at launch with free VR.
My feeling is they don't want to know, and there "support" has been horrific!
I bought mine outright on my credit card, how did you get the exchange sorted in the end, and did you have to do without your phone while they sent the new one?
Thing is fingerprint etc all still works fine, but its seriously hacking me off knowing it shouldn't be doing this!
I have the same problem now.Does the waranty cover this issue?
