[Q] Nook Glowlight questions - Nook Touch General

Hello, I'm hoping someone can answer some questions for me. I've looked through the forum but can't find solid answers.
1. I gather from the existing threads that there is a 'new' nook simple touch with glowlight that can't be rooted at present. How can I identify whether the nook I'm buying is this new model or not?
2. How is the glowlight operated? Can it be switched on while using other readers such as the Kindle app?
3. Is the Google Play Books app available to use on a rooted nook?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can answer.

The new one has a white frame, no side buttons and no SD card.
Yes, it can be rooted. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559915

Thanks for that. Seems most places here are still just selling the old model at the moment.
Could you shed any light on my other questions?

2. How is the glowlight operated? Can it be switched on while using other readers such as the Kindle app?
Turning the light on doesn't depend on any application as it shall turn on globally for Nook, like switching on and off the penlight. As simple as that. It should even turn on when Nook is blocked with screensaver when you press "n" button for 2 sec (and turn off when pressed again for 2 sec)

People have some versions working but it won't sync books I believe. I think there are a couple of threads on it here so search a little deeper for more info.

[Q] Google play on nook simple touch ?

I've been using my rooted nook simple touch glow for a week and have been pretty happy with it, but need to install either pocket or instapaper which are only on google play. I tried readability but it crashes on startup.
Anyone know if it's possible to install google play on the NTG running 1.1.5?
Is there any other manual way to install a google play app? I know how to install via adb, but no idea where to download the apk for an app I purchase.
If you install from this guide, at the end it shows how to enable the market / play:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1675706
Note that you cannot search the market from the rooted Nook for some reason. But there is an application that you can install to search the market. See here:

I have similar problem on accessing market place, it's stated should wait for one day, it's been over a few days now problem doesnt resolve by itselt. In fact you tube ceased to work now, it was okay when I first rooted it.
Did you do steps #4 and #5 in this guide?

Thanks for this. I thought of uninstall and reinstalling google apps and unfortunately deleted youtube altogether both the apk and reinstalled software. So I did a soft un-root again and it seems now it worked (after I had done step 4 & 5 as per your message).
Now I have market app that works, search function does not work. I will probably installed vending apk or did step 4 and 5 againg ( I think I spent more time fixing Nook touch than actually using it).
Btw, anyone knows how to make the side options on the right to appear (where one can choose home or adw launcher). For some reason it has disappearred. How do I get back from nook home reading screen to adw launcher now??

I doubt that you'll get the marketplace search working, it is a known issue. Use the alternative search application mentioned in the article.

That is the magic buttons application it needs to be running to get the buttons. Note that when the application is running but the menu is collapsed, that it is _very_ difficult at first to find and open it. Look closely at the middle of the right edge of the screen. There should be a very faint icon there. If so, then try to press the side of the _plastic_case_ where it meets the screen by jamming your fnger right between them, as if you are trying to pry the plastic case off. That is how I hit that button!
Once you have found button savior and are back in the ADW launcher, be sure to give @jeff_kz's NookTouchMods a try. You will be able to remap one of your quicknav buttons or the 'n' long press to take you back to ADW launcher - much better than button savior!

Kayaker, I've looked at these mods before, but I see no canonical information explaining exactly how to modify and install the mods. Is there some thread explaining this that I've been unable to find?
Thanks!

Thanks. Actually I had seen the thread but it looks like they are referring to things previously discussed, which I could not find. Perhaps I just need to download the files and play around, it might all become obvious. I am new to rooting and to the Nook, so I am a bit apprehensive to start diving in.

Finally rooted.. a few questions

Hey all,
I have my KFHD7 rooted and running beautifully thanks to the boards. I had more than a few hiccups due to the fact the board is so disorganized (HD 7, HD 8.9 posts all over the place, rather than in their respective sections). But.. all is good.
I've attached a screenshot below.
I have a few questions:
- When using Smart Keyboard Pro (best keyboard out there!) I notice that the 'softkeys' overlap it. Do you think this is an app problem?
- Does anyone know how I can enable a 'Recent Apps' thing or similar? I tried a few.. and I'm currently using one that I slide left (I forget its name), but it works.. but not as nice as the ICS one
- Perhaps because of the 'recent apps' problem, but when I receive notifications via Gmail, the status bar crashes. Any ideas on a fix?
- For many, many apps that have tablet versions, I find it sticks to the mobile phone version, which is clunky. Any ideas how I can fix this?
- Also, despite having Google Search downloaded (but I had to sideload it since the Play Store says it is not compatible), all searches still redirect to the Amazon version. Fixes?
Many thanks for all your help and tips!

Just a FYI everyone of those questions can be answered and have been solved just use the search forum.. Just bc you think this forum is "disorganized" doesn't mean you cant use the search tool. Here are some links to get you started:Nav bar problem for keyboards: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2038452Recent Apps:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2158395 And as far as you mobile verzions apps try altering the dpi and there is some threads on that as well.. Google search:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155017 I think that about covers it..:good:
I've found the Google Search pretty poor on the forum; for example to have an adequate response I need to do 4 or 5 searches, on each forum, ya know?
But thanks for highlighting the answers for me

[Q] Some titles garbled using Nook Manager

I used Nook Manager to root my Nook Glowlight V1 early this year. I love it, but I've been having a small problem that I haven't been able to figure out.
Most of my titles show up fine (using ReLaunch), but a few are garbled. . . most of the garbled ones display as "%t" (photo demonstrating this available via email if it's needed. . . I'm too new to post a link to the photo ).
But a few will show the author and then "%t", a few show "Unknown", and a few seem like just strings of characters.
I tried changing the text of the file names themselves. That doesn't seem to have any effect. I've looked at the metadata in Calibre, but I don't see anything that looks amiss. Frankly, I'm stuck, and that's why I need to ask this question! Could anyone point me toward a possible cause (or, even better. . . a solution)?
Thank you!

Hi Maneki!
I'd love to help, but I need a few more specifics.
1. Is your Nook Touch Glow on firmware 1.1.5, 1.2.0 or 1.2.1?
2. Are the problematic books signed with Adobe DRM?
3. How long have you been having this problem?
Later,

Of course!
1. It's on 1.2.1
2. No, they're not.
3. Since I first rooted, so since February. I thought I'd eventually find a thread here or elsewhere so I could fix the problem myself, but I suspect that I just don't know what I'm looking for.
Thanks!

Great, thanks for the info.
Have you already tried completely removing the offensive books from your Nook, rebooting, and then adding them back? If not, try that.

Okay, now, would you PM me a quick pic (or, better yet, a screenshot) of the screen with the problematic books on it? (I.e, the Library screen)

Sure thing.
Reply to your PM
Then I believe this solves your problem AND provides a cause.
In the Advanced Settings menu of ReLaunch, there are several file association settings. Look around in there and see if anything works.
I actually got rid of ReLaunch quite a while back, and am currently using ADW with the Minimalist theme. I absolutely love it. But, if you need me to look around in ReLaunch, please post the .apk for me and I'll temporarily reinstall it.

I tested the stock Library, and the titles do show up there.
An important element of the problem, which thenookieforlife3 kindly diagnosed and I neglected to mention, is that I'm using ReLaunch! So the problem is specifically that they're not displaying correctly in ReLaunch, not that they won't display correctly at all.

I must have messed something up while playing with settings when I first rooted (honestly, as is probably obvious from this thread, the level of versatility is kind of over my head!). . . I poked at a few things, and then I just restored the ReLaunch settings to default, and the titles show up again.
Thank you so much; that was massively helpful!

[Q] OS and Software

Hi there, I've recently purchased a yotaphone 2 and am slowly getting to grips with it.
The first thing I've noticed is that the OS is Android 4.4.3, even though the manual specifies that it is 4.4.4!?
I obviously tried the system update but to no avail. Is anyone else on 4.4.3 or is it just me?
Also I again through the manual notice it mentions YotaNotes which sounds useful, but doesn't appear to be on my device?
Model: YD201
Build number: KTU84L.4.4.3-S01-003-EU1.0.3.61a
Any help appreciated.
Many thanks

Mine is running 4.4.3 too, I think it's the latest version available as of now. Where in the manual did you read that it should run 4.4.4? In the French version of the manual, at least, the only reference to the Android version gives 4.4 Kitkat, nothing more precise.

Same here, I didn't read the manual before but I don't seem to have YotaNotes on my phone either (same model & build number).
Seems worth asking Yotaphone, I'd say...

But still defo missing YotaNotes. I'll facebook message them and let you know.
Good to know I appear to be on the latest build.

Me too, except for Kobo books, I can't seem to get them into yota reader, although the kobo reader app mirrors well enough plus doing it that way it syncs to my actual kobo ebook but the yota reader definately has much better contrast
Sent from my GT-N8010 using XDA Premium HD app
Good point!
Actually PlayBooks app mirrors quite well, so think that should do the job.

I use Calibre, a nice ebook management freeware, to manage/convert my whole ebook collection on my PC. I usually convert everything to the epub format (I have a couple of Kindle and Kobo readers at home for the whole family), and have no issue to get them on YotaReader. Except, of course, that it won't sync with my Kobo, which is an annoyance.
I'm glad to read that you can sync the reading progress between the Kobo reader app & reader, during my initial tests I wasn't able to achieve this, so I'll try again now that I know it is possible.

Read It Later no longer syncing with Pocket

Hey all,
The other day Read It Later stopped updating with the Pocket website online. I'm getting a dialogue that it is syncing lists but nothing else is happening, even if I leave it to try for half an hour. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this!
I'm running a rooted Nook Simple Touch with software version 1.1.0.
Read It Later is the Pro 1.3 version.
I should be clear, the app is no longer downloading new articles or taking them out of the to-read queue when syncing. It is accessing my archive, so some kind of connection is still present!
Edit: found it elsewhere on this site. Will fire it up this evening and let you know if it works!
Actually I came here today hoping someone might share a copy of readitlater.apk with me? My NST recently broke, I bought another, but sadly hadn't backed up all my apks and so now can't get at anything! Pocket are refusing to send me the apk of the old version. If you would be willing to send me your apk, I can see if it works for me -- or if it is now indeed borked for everyone. [I did pay for read it later pro back in the day, I am not trying to nick something, though you'll just have to take my word for that....]

Sorry -- still alive here, but life has been unexpectedly busy and I haven't been able to play with my nook. Hopefully this weekend.
Here's my current workaround: I use IFTTT to sync any new Read It Later addittion to Instapaper, and then I use Instafetch (which works on the Nook) to read them there. The free version lets you read 10 articles at a time.
The issue with this is that I need to check off the read articles in Read It Later, since the activities in Instapaper don't sync back to Read It Later.
But there might be an IFTTT receipe for that...
So, did y'all see this post?
I had not. I had followed that thread to get the Kindle working, but it looks like whatever the problem was went beyond Kindle. I followed the directions, starting using the 1.0.1 app instead of 1.3 Pro, and it's syncing again! Hooray!
Read it Later / Pocket was probably my heaviest usage of the Nook so I was really wondering what I was going to do if it was terminally gone.
(My Instapaper -> Instafetch workaround was a bit glitchy...)
Anyone following this follow nmyshkin's link!
