First of all this is a question, yes! So it should be the Q&A threads.
Secondly they're stickies at the top of every thread section, they're there for a purpose. If you had correctly searched you would have come across this stickied thread in the Q&A threads, that took me awhile to write to specifically helps folks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2639102
No disrespect meant but in the future search before opening a thread that's not required

Root, Roms and OTA Updates

Now that the slide has Root and an update, I have a question that may have been asked/answered in previous threads, forgive me in advance (I did a search and could not get an answer)...
Once rooted, will the slide still get the Froyo update?
Also if the phone has to go back for exchange/warranty, is there a way to flash it back to "Stock" as we did with the Samsung BHII?
TIA!
There is a nandroid backup of the stock rom available in the development section of the forum to revert back for warranty, not sure if froyo will goto a rooted slide, but I'm sure the devs will have a 2.2 rom out soon

Wait... There was an update?
This is the one thing keeping me from rooting.
Just back up your stock android rom before rooting so you can restore it. When you get to clockworkmod for the first time create a backup.

½anyone know where to get the RUU of the slide rom, not mixed and modified by a dev or cook?
but the origional rom or lastest version of it.
the nandroid backup will get you back to stock(ish) and if you're rooted with an aftermarket rom, you WILL NOT receive any updates from tmobile.. A couple days after release of the update, we'll have a rooted version, i can bet my right nut on it(and yes i do still have my right nut lol)
Guys... I don't play forum police or anything but the questions go in the q/a stickied thread or in general. The moderater already moved several threads like this today. Oh and when we do get an update... it will posted here after the proper mods have been made. You'll only have to wait a couple days and I'm sure that will be faster than you having to wait in line for your ota to be beamed to your handset. So go ahead and root it.. trust me! You'll be glad you did. Oh and if you get an ota... don't install it! Contact me or one of the other forum members. Or better yet post your news and we'll tell you the steps so we all can enjoy it.

Thanks bro for trying to keep people in line while I have been busy. and like you said this thread is now moved to QandA where it shouldve been posted.
Agreed... Sorry about that - just thought General was appropriate at the time.

How to uninstall unrevoked root and recovery reflash tool so I can get OTA update?

I would like to get the OTA update that comes out today, but assume I cannot do that with root and the custom recovery. Are there directions somewhere on how to do this for the unrevoked3 setup? Thanks.
If you are running a rooted stock rom and all you've done is push super user, busybox, and maybe a modified host file for adfree, I don't understand why you would need to unroot to receive the OTA update. None of the core system has been modified. Am I totally off base here? To my mind, the worst that would happen is you would loose root.
need stock recovery to flash the ota properly. downgrade via the instructions posted in this forum and do the two ota. then reroot using unrevoked 3
I'd just wait for the devs to clear the new OTA. Didn't take long with the EVO.
No need to jump the gun quite yet...

Yeah, this is what I'm waiting for. A similiar EVO solution to the OTA
seriously, you open a thread to answer your other thread? while the answer you looking for is right in the 1st page.
I've reported both threads and suggested a temp ban. **** on the first page there is a huge orange font telling me how to install the ota. I wish this phone woulda came out on anything but verizon. To many kids on verizon....and idiots.

I'm not issuing warnings yet for questions posted in development which may fall under that scope. I have requested a Q&A sub-forum be created for DI. We'll see how that pans out. Until then, please post questions in the thread where you believe your issue is arises. Otherwise, please post questions in the DI/General sub-forum until a Q&A forum is created. Thanks!

Feeling lame for asking but 2.3.3 / 4.5.588 - root advice

Ive searched quite a bit, I know this phone is a bugger to root so I figure I would ask. I did have this droid x rooted nicely, running MIUI and some other nice ROMS... then one day things went horribly wrong. I did an update and from then on it wouldnt get past the bootloader unless I reverted to stock. I was a few days away from a Galaxy Nexus update so I didnt sweat it and have been using my Nexus ever since.
...But I keep seeing my DX, sitting there looking like a decent android device that just needs a little update to be turned into something useful. I've seen quite a few posts on Motorola tightening the strings on rooting so I was hoping for a little advice on getting root on my 2.3.3 / 4.5.588.
Thanks!
Check out the link below. Since you are on 4.5.588 I would suggest SBF to 4.5.602, then use D3 1 click root. The links are in the forum below. Just make sure you do not take any OTA's while on 602.
Once you are rooted then you can load any GB rom you want through CWM.
droidxforums.com/forum/gingerbread-development-hacking/35634-gb-602-root-start-here-links-all.html
Questions should be asked in Q&A forums (or General when there is no Q&A), not Development forums.

the implications of ROOT

hello!
i just got my N4 a few days ago...
didnt even change a ringtone yet... just downloaded some apps, and costumized the phone a-bit.
i do want to root, because some advanced actions such as recording calls (legal in my country) require root.
i was about to root using the Nexus 4 ToolKit posted here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688
but when i run it it always says its tookit ver v1.3.0, and a 1.6.0 is avilable, i update but when i re-run it, it says its 1.3 again...
and even if i go past this step and get to the "What build do you have?
the only answer i can pic is 4.2 (JOP24C)
and i own JOP24D (2.4.1) - will this be an issue?
and also - if i root my phone, and lets say androud 4.2.2 comes out a day later, does the phone still update? or do i stop getting updates as soon as im rooted?
TY!

If you get the donate version it will update it so that you can do the 4.2.1 build. I think it was like $5. Well worth supporting the dev

alright cool i don't mind paying 5USD...
but what about the most important things?
does rooting 100% erase evetyhing?
Do i keep getting updates to my phone? or when a new version comes out i have to re-root or something?
It will erase EVERYTHING and you would have to go back to stock to get the OTA or wait for a build to be flashable

If the ROM got OTA (over the air) you can update i guess, not really populair with OTA, but you can download 4.2.2 stock ROM or custom ROM when it comes out.

i just have one more question - that i didnt understand.
as of now, unrooted, if 4.3(lets say) comes out tommorow, my device updates, bam.. im 4.3
if i root now, at 4.2.1, the above will not happen? meaning in order to update to 4.3 i will have to lose all my data again?

If you are only rooted and having modified any system files you can OTA successfully.

ashamed to say i didnt really get it.. lol.
you said OTA is "Over the Air", right?
so if i rooted at 4.2.1 (just rooted, no rom or anything), and 4.3 came out do i
1. Have to delete everything AGAIN and re-root on 4.3 to get the update
2. have to find the 4.3 file online and install it somehow
3. do nothing, the phone automatically gets updated
ty =)

Getting root on your device does not delete anything. What deletes everything is unlocking the bootloader (which, at the present time, is required to obtain root). You only have to unlock the bootloader once. Once it is unlocked, getting root is trivial.
Every time you receive an over-the-air update, it will remove your root access, BUT, as I mentioned earlier, getting it back is trivial when your bootloader is unlocked.

Have you read the stickies in the General and Q&A sections? There is a couple of stickies by me in the General section (the "Basics" and "Root" links in my signature), and there is also a sticky by Jubakuba in the Q&A section.

I did not!
I will do so as soon as I'm done with work.
Will prolly open a thread titled "rooted 4.2, how do i update to 4.2.1" unless its in the stickies..

The easiest way is to wait for the OTA notification to appear on your device. Then just accept it, and then root again.
I've written up something for the Galaxy Nexus (sticky in the GNex General section), but nothing yet for the N4. The basic premise (and most of the commands) are the same. You can browse through it for some background info.

But, considering that I am a noob, could you please tell me guys , if I am able to port it so all XDA members can have it?

I know that Stock Images were running trought here Long time Ago.
But I preffered to not try this method since I saw many people having trouble with that.
And I saw a topic where people giver the URL to everyone download the Official Rom. But it still unavailable.
Thinking in all of it, I was thinking to make it available for everyone
If you haven't started the update, you can try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2414424
In the output, the OTA URL will start with http://android.client.google.com
