This change cut $80 off of my bill overnight!! I was on the original 10gb share plan with 4 smartphones. Now my data plan has dropped $20 from $120 to $100 and I'm saving $15 on each device fee.:thumbup::sly:

I think I got duped. I called up and she claimed that I can convert my 4 contract phones over to this plan however that there is only the 40 dollar rate for each line, and I'll actually see 15 bucks per line on the bill. The change is effective on 2/4/2014 which is when my billing cycle changes... I guess I'll check back at the end of the month and have a long discussion with AT&T about it.

That is great news, any saving is good savings

It's pretty much a modification of the Family Share Value plan introduced not that long ago. The biggest pricing discrepancy between T-Mobile and AT&T was that AT&T charged the same monthly fee per device whether you bought it outright, got it with Next, or brought your own. With the introduction of the recent Family Share Value plan people who got their phones as described above were given a $15 a month discount on the monthly service fee per non-subsidized device. My two went from $40 to $25 per month. With the new plan announced today, if you're not using a subsidized phone, the $25 per month drops to $15. It starts at 10GB so it's really targeted at families/groups and large data users. My 6GB plan with two non-subsidized devices ($25 a month each) was $116. With the new 10GB plan it's $109 because while the data component went up a bit each device dropped $10 ( $15 a month).
So it's a great deal if you aren't using a subsidized device, have a lot of (non-subsidized) lines on your account, or are a big data user. It's pretty meaningless to those with subsidized phones. But it's meant to be a T-Mobile deterrant and you can't get subsidized phones from them directly anymore anyway. You can but only through resellers along with 2-year contracts and different rate plans that are pretty comparable to AT&T subsidized rates.

I was also on the 6GB plan (2 lines). Upgraded to this and now have 10GB for $15 less. Winning!

Can anyone who had a contract tell me exactly what is listed for the specific phone charge? I have attached how it shows up on mine and am a bit worried even though I am told that the 15 dollars will apply to each of my 4 lines

You're not on a Mobile Share plan and I can't tell if the devices on your account are subsidized or not. The per device monthly discount only applies to non-subsidized devices (finished 2-year contract, purchased outright, Next, or bring your own). To get any of the discounts we're talking about you'd need to move to a Mobile Share plan and if you have devices on your account that are subsidized the monthly charge you pay for them won't decrease. With the new 10GB plan non-subsidized devices drop from as high as $40 to $15 per month.

See that's the problem there. I was told by the REP that even though I am on contracts the 15 dollar will apply. Its like I am getting an exemption. I will call them back
Also "The most surprising part of today's announcement is that current customers with on-contract phones can switch to the new pricing structure. Starting tomorrow, you can simply call up AT&T and ask to switch to a Mobile Share Value plan with 10GB or more of data, and you'll drop from paying $40 per smartphone down to just $15" the following was reported via the verge at http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/1/5368768/att-discounts-large-mobile-share-value-plans paragraph 6.
She actually set the plan up to take effect on 2/4/2014 which coincides with the start of my billing cycle.
I will call them back and cancel the changes. I would be going from paying 199 minus discounts to 235 minus discounts and that makes no sense for me.

This is from the new program's conditions. Anyone with subsidized phones can't also be on a "no annual service contract" agreement. Installment agreement refers to Next. Who knows, maybe the CSR you talked to is giving you some additional discounts or exceptions. It's pretty much the Wild Wild West over at AT&T lately in their effort to keep customers from T-Mobile.
Pricing for Value plan w/ 10 GB data ($100/mo.) plus per smartphone pricing ($15/mo.) on no annual service contract or on an installment agmt.

Anyway thanks for the information. I just got back off the phone with ATT rep along with a online chat and I was informed that I will get charged the 40 dollar a month for the 3 lines and will receive a 25 dollar credit for each line. OF course I would only see that credit on my Next Bill and following bills. I will have to hope the reps I spoke to are correct, if not I'll be calling them back when my next bill shows up.
Here's to crossing my fingers.

While this is great and all but I would rather keep unlimited data on 3 lines family plan with unlimited text messaging and 500 mins with roll over for $160 a month. Until they take away the unlimited that is. Hopefully not anytime soon.

With the monthly device fee down to $15, Next finally makes sense. It's now cheaper (as long as you want/need 10GB of data) than buying the phone subsidized. And that's not even taking in to account the "new device after 12 months" benefit of Next. Here's how the numbers work out based on current AT&T prices.

It's $20 per month cheaper IF you get your plan switched to the Even More Plus contract-free plan.
It's not cheaper automatically, as far as I know, if you're on a current contract rate and don't ask for the change...

No, it would be cheaper.
If you're not currently a T-Mobile customer, and you buy the phone contract free and at an unsubsidized price, you can ask for the Even More Plus plan, and you will get a rate that is $20 per month cheaper than people who buy the phone for $199 with a two year contract pay per month.
The Even More Plus plan is not available online any more, you have to go into a T-Mo store and ask for it specifically... I'm not sure Best Buy can/will offer it to you.
What I did with my Nexus One was go into a T-Mo store and buy the sim card before my phone even came in, then just plugged the sim into the phone when it was delivered.
I pay $59.99/mo for 500 talk minutes, unlimited text and unlimited web AND I'm not tied to any contract (well other than the monthly contract). You still get free nights and weekends and all that good stuff.
No reason to not buy the phone at full price and unsubsidized, unless you don't want to fork over $580 all at once. In the long run it's a better deal.

Just so you know, ALL Nexus S's are sold unlocked. The word you're looking for is "unsubsidized", or full price.
People have been saying that Even More Plus (no contract) plans are $20/month cheaper than Even More (contract) plans. This is only partially true. The Phone+Text+Data plans are $20/month cheaper. Phone+Text (no data) plans, and data only plans, are $10/month cheaper.
The general Even More Plus plans are not available online (with the exception of the data only plan which I linked above). You'd need to go to a T-Mobile store (or call customer service) to get the general EM+ plan.

+1, yes you will save in the long run
I was in a loyalty unlimited plan ($84.99) for 2 years with my G1. Wanted to save more in the long run so I opted for the "non-contract" Even More Plus Plan ($59.99). I had to call Customer Care to be able to change my loyalty unlimited plan. So in 2 years similar to signing a 2 year cotnract, I save $250.
Like others suggested, buy the sim card for the Even More "Plus" plan for $59.99
and just buy the phone outright.
Even More Plus is really only beneficial for single lines. If you have more than one, it's not worth it.

Why's that? The cheapest Talk+Text+UnlWeb family plan is $30/month cheaper on EM+ than on EM. And the savings increast with the higher-minute plans.

Current Plan:
Even More 1500: $79.99
Data Plan (2): $40
Unlimited Family Messaging: $20
Two phones: Free til 2012
Total: $140
Even More Plus 1500: $119.99
Data Plan (2): Included
Unlimited Family Messaging: Included
Two phones: $10
Total: $130.00
That's only $10 a month cheaper for EMP. When I have to start paying the other two lines, it'll be $20 a month cheaper...which is the general consensus that EMP saves ($20/month).
$20 a month for 22 months = $440.
Now go to upgrade your phones. I need two smart phones and two regular phones.
Even more: Free (2 Vibrants, 2 Gravity T)
Even more plus: 2 Vibrants at retail ($400? each) and 2 Gravity T at retail ($175? each) = $1150 (this may be a high estimate) - $440 (savings) = $710
The difference I save each month on EMP does not offset the price I have to pay to buy phones outright.

I must be missing something. On T-Mobile's website, the EM1500 plan with unlimited txt + data is $160/month. Is your plan maybe part of some special? Or do you have 4 of the $10/month (200MB cap) data plans?
From your description, it's tough to tell whether you have 4 lines or 2 (since you say "once I have to start paying for 2 lines").
I realize we're kinda sidetracking the main thread here ... I'm just curious about your plan for some reason.

What is your current plan on Tmobile?

Just curious about what plan you guys are on. I currently have the $54.99 unlimited talk text and web for 2 years. For me it's the cheapest i have ever been with tmobile. Hope to see other cheaper plans.

T-Mobile has been screwing my wife and I over. We dropped a $10 month 3rd line 4 times already and it keeps being added back on. We were put on a Value Plan 7 months ago where we were paying $15 a month per line for Unlimited data and now all of a sudden its $30 a month per line.....plus they added $7.99 a month insurance to both of our phones that I never authorized.
They told us about the new "Value Plan" With unlimited talk+text+and data for $110 a month for 2 lines is what they told us.....but in order to do this we have to pay a $200 per line "Migration Fee" to the new plan which is the same price as cancelling our contract. I've been with T-Mo for 8 years and they do this? **** you T-Mobile.
I have an unlimited family plan for voice, text, and data and its about $50 per line for 4 lines.
I'm paying just over $100 a month for two lines for my wife and I. This is after a 15% discount as a government employee. We have unlimited texting, 200MB data each, and 1000 shared minutes. It seems we could be getting more for our money. I've called and asked about changing plans and they always tell me it would cause my contract to end which would mean we would then have to pay retail for our phones (MyTouch 4G and MT4G Slide). So far I'm not too pleased with the deal since they assured me during signup that my total monthly would be closer to $80 after taxes, fees, and the 15% discount. Any ideas?

Youre paying $100+tax for 2 lines right? I think you should be getting unlimited talk text and web for that price. Ask about their "customer care plan". Thats how i got my 54.99. They dont advertised it.
As for my situation, i wanted to get the sgs2 for $199. They told me in order to get that phone at a discounted price, i would have to get the $79.99 plan unlimited talk text and web(2gb highspeed). And if im getting the 54.99 plan, i would pay the whole price of 529.99. $230 down pmt and $15 charge every month until i paid off the balance. I did some math and i decided to get 54.99 plan and just get the phone when im ready instead of paying $80 a month. You think i chose correctly? The phone can wait, i just want to get a cheaper plan.

It just shuts off after 30mb, and you'd have to spend more or renew the plan early for more. Which kinda sucks, but I hardly use it - the first couple months (with my old hacked iPhone) I didn't even reach the limit.
Oh, and rough estimate, T-mobile EDGE is about 130 Kbps download/80 upload, that's what I've seen. Sorta like ISDN speeds.

1. There is no $15 data SOC for Value Plans. It's $10 for 2GB, $25 for 5GB and $55 for 10GB.
2. The insurance roots back to where you got the phone from. I advise going to them.
3. You say you're on the Value plan and you're still complaing about the Value plan having a migration fee. It's basically the discount on a phone. Value you get a discounted plant. Classic you get a discounted phone. You can't have both. So the "migration" is basically asking for the discount back. You can't double dip.
I think you're being misinformed and there is some miscommunication along the way. They do give you a break down of the bill when you renew any type of contract. You should have saved it. Could use that to argue the charges.

T-Mo people, teach me about your pricing structure.

Went in to a T-Mobile store yesterday to see if they had any S3's, and while looking at the display model, it said it was $279, or $229 if on the value plan. What is the value plan, and whats different between it and the standard family plan? Also, you MUST take the 5GB data plan? They had 2 employees working and about 5 people in line, so after ab out 10 minutes I left, questions unanswered.
The price is to make up the fact that you could save more with them. A value plan is when you start out a contract with a phone that you either have or bought full price. At the end, you end up saving even more than classic. You could find better deals at Wally world or Costco and they won't even make you upgrade your plan

So if Im walking in as a new customer, I would have to pay the $279?
I just signed up for T-mobile this week coming from sprint. Got the S3 with the value plan. I paid about $270 in the store and walked out with the phone. With the value plan, you end up paying FULL price for the phone but they basically give it to you on credit and interest free. They add an extra 20 a month to your bill for 22 months, however you can pay off the phone early. Once the phone is paid off, I am looking at about 83 bucks a month with insurance for Unlimited with 5GB data with hotspot.
All of the numbers I just gave your are ballpark (except for the extra 20) becasue I don't remember the exact numbers.
In the long run, your monthly bill will be cheaper. The classic play with 5gb is about 94 bucks a month before taxes and fees.
At least this is how I understand things. If I am wrong, someone else please chime in.
I hope this helps a bit.
To add to durhamite's response, the extra $20 is per phone on the Value plan. This is easier to explain with examples. I'll assume two lines on an unlimited voice/text/2GB high-speed data plan.
Classic price for phones: $279 (after MIR)*2=$558
Classic MRC = $139.98
Value price for phones: $229*2= $458
Monthly EIP payments (for 20 months): $20*2=40
Value MRC: $99.98
I left out activation fees and any other fees that would be the same, regardless of plan. To summarize, with the Value plan, you pay $200 less today ($100 would come back via MIR if you chose Classic), the same amount for the next 20 months, and $40 less for the last four months of your contract. Keep in mind that both plans have an ETF and if you cancel a Value plan early, the remaining balance on the phones is due immediately.
The other advantage is that with the Value plan, you wouldn't have to have the data plan on your phones. However, I'm unsure if that is from the beginning, or only after you have finished your EIP installments.
So basically on the Value Plan, TMO is giving you an interest free (0% APR) loan on your phone (EIP payments = $20 x 20 months). Assuming that your credit is good enough to qualify for this plan.
I've ran the numbers between Classic vs Value plans. Value is always cheaper, you'll save between $100-$200, after 24 months contract, depending on which plans you choose.
Should of went to Walmart, only 198 for the phone.

While it's true that you're saving upfront cost of the phone $198 vs $229 from Walmart vs TMOBile, once you add up all the 24 months contract the Value plan is still cheaper. AFAIK, you can only get Value Plan from Retail TMO stores.

If you watch the sales, you can call and make changes to your plan that cxan really save you big money and lock you into great prices and features. Sorry, Im a huge TMO Fan, and Im always trying to bring ppl over, lol. Theres a guy at my local Tmo store who tells me I make him About $500 a year in commisions, just telling ppl about the service and handing them his card, lmao. But in return he called me the day before launch and had a GS3 tucked off to the side to sell me a day early!

wrong you can get the value plan w/ the s3 at costco for 390 without monthly installments. now that is a deal.
My plan:
unlimited minutes for two lines: 69.99
unlimited text for all lines: 9.99
two additional lines: 4.99 x 2 = 9.98
two lines w/ 200mb data: 4.99 x2 = 9.98
Total bill: 99.94$ - 15% employee discount = 84.95$ monthly pre taxes for four lines.
This same plan on classic would run you.... 99.99 for unlimited talk/text plus 19.99 for two add a line plus 40$ (minimum) for required data. After the discount it would be 137$ monthly.
This itself is a 52$ savings per month over 2 years. Which is 1248$ total in savings.
Provided you have to buy your phones separately it is still a good deal. My family all has smart phones of our individual choice, some that are not available on T-mobile.
I'm thinking about going to Tmobile also as sprint still doesnt have LTE. So if I get the value plan of $64.99 (500talk+text+5gb data) then I can go to costco and get the s3 for $350 correct?

390* but this is only an in store promotion so IDK if you can get in on the deal depending on where your at.
Also 5gb data is kind of a waste, I would sign up for the 2gb data unlimited for 10$ and edit the apn to keep getting unlimited data without throttling. But that's just me....
Good luck

Didn't know you can do that. Sometimes I use my phone to tether my tablet when my home internet is down and have used 6gb. That's why I figure I'd sign up for the 5 gb plan.

Just as a note for those thinking about it... if you live in the area east of dallas, tx, tmobile service is the worst out of the four carriers. Bar none. Sprint beats them, Verizon and AT&T beat them without any effort at all.

Cool info man, I definitely like sprint services since they have free roaming and good coverage but my area on 3G completely sucks, but when I go on road trips I'm pretty sure I'll find some bad spots for tmobile as well

Not a joke at all bud, if your making threats like "I'm leaving" when you call in, that may be the reason why? I've been a small business owner, and if someone has an issue, being polite could take them a long way with me. Not to say you haven't been, but I know a lot of ppl expect to just get what they want out of a business by yelling, especially when it's an over the phone situation, and not in person.
Tmo has done things that have just blown me away to keep my services. I'm positive that not everyone has had all great experiences with them, but honestly, in 10yrs they've always gone out of their way for me, while other carriers have barely ever ever been personable!

Carriers For This Phone (and generally)

**I have no business or employment connection with ANY phone company or carrier or with any company connected to one**
I used T-Mobile a few years back here in Atlanta and it was pretty good service here but then I discovered Simple Mobile. It uses T-Mobile network but is a prepaid service as opposed to T-Mobile which is a post paid service. My speed tests indicate that they are the same service. So I'm wondering why people stay with T- Mobile (or any of the big 4 post paid carriers)?
This is a real question as I have not been with any of the big 4 for several years now. Is there a reason to have a contract besides lower upfront cost on a phone (with a plan that for almost every customer makes the overall cost much much more)?
I switched from Simple Mobile to Straight Talk when I discovered that they offered an even cheaper plan at $45/month. And when I decided to switch it just ported my number and switched in a matter of hours. No termination fee no nothing. I'm really wondering why users are in these contracts.
Thoughts?

That's the thing though. I'm constantly shocked by how many smart people seem to not be good at math. Prepaid is often not just cheaper but waaaayy cheaper over the life of a contract. Like over a thousand bucks cheaper. I don't buy that these folks are getting a thousand dollars worth of convenience and customer service calls.*

Nice! That sounds like a veeeery good deal if one doesn't need many minutes.
Me thinks people just don't know about the deals available with prepaid carriers like Simple Mobile and Straight Talk and Red Pocket (and others). I understand that the elderly will go for convenience because they don't understand how to set it all up over the internet and that kinda jazz but anyone growing up in the last 15 years should know better.
T-Mobile is the cheapest of the big 4 carriers and their unlimited monthly plan for an individual costs $720 more than the same service with Simple Mobile over the life of the T-Mobile contract. That's a 64GB iPad. These aren't small differences in cost.

Do not underestimate the price rich people will pay for convenience.
How about insurance shopping? You shop for car insurance lately? Studies show that most people would save $500 a year if they shopped for car insurance annually. Most don't shop but once every 10 years for insurance. That's about the same amount of savings ....
And POOR people? Think about the economics of contracts .... its sort of like buying a phone on extremely high interest rate financing .. but ... SOME people use rent-to-own and those check cashing places ..... is post paid really that much different than?
The bigger question is how much we should be spreading the word .... since all the MNVO's are really at the mercy of the big companies, if everyone switches to the st $45 a month plan who will be left to subsidize our cheap prepaid rates? .......
To the OP.
I think where people are located has a lot to do with it. Here in Canada, in Toronto to be more specific, pre-paid carriers suck if you're not in the city. I live just outside of Toronto, Mississauga, and the quality of service is very low compared to living in the major city.
I've been with my carrier, Telus, for 10 years now, I get huge discounts and slack from them! I've never been on a contract and have always paid for my phone upfront (minus loyalty discounts).
All in all, it's about reliability, what's reliable for one, isn't always reliable for the next.
I understand prepaid is great for single lines, but multiple lines... Plus loyalty bonuses is a great steal.
Unlimited 2 main lines. Remaining 3 has 500 mins plus nights and weekend. All unlimited text. 3 lines have 5gb plan and have i think $7 insurance. Without insurance it's $140. I opt for insurance for 2 lines so it ends up being ~$155 including tax.
Renew Bonuses: $250 credit plus $10 discount each month while on contract = $240. So $490 in bonuses which covers 3 months of pay... So yes there are benefits to staying on contract when you're on family plan.
You may not get the same deal as i do... Depends on the rep.. Pretty sure i was talking to a supervisor of some sort because he kept repeating "i can do things a normal rep doesn't have access to."

Good point. In the USA, most folks on prepaid are using MVNO carriers that literally use the same towers as the big guys. For example, Straight Talk you can get either an ATT sim or a T-mobile sim, and use the exact same towers as if you were with that carrier.

If they mark you up $500 higher, and then give you $500 in BONUS, you still are paying the bonus is worth much. The calculation needs to compare what the contract price all in amount is to the prepaid all in amount. I'm assuming your $140 number is ACTUAL bill, including taxes and surcharges and fees? If so, that is really good deal for 3 lines.
2 * $45 a month ST plans, unlimited everything, + $30 Tmo 100 voice 5gb fast data, = $120, that's $20 a month cheaper than what you are quoting, or $480 cheaper over 2 years, which feels pretty close to the $490 bonus you get on your contract. And that's straight off the shelf pricing, no need to talk to a supervisor.
SO, in your case, I'm not seeing a big savings either way, slight variations on the two scenarios, more minutes in one, more data in the other, unlimited txt all around.
BUT if a cheaper deal comes up in the next 2 years? Prepaid can go after it, contract is stuck on contract.
Yes, some folks can get a better deal than the norm contract or prepaid, but, on average, I'm pretty sure the OP is correct, prepaid saves much money over contracts, for most consumers, although Teo has a point that the gap is likely narrower for multi line customers ... IF they can get such a good deal.
Right now, att, 3 lines 550 minutes, unlimited mobile to mobiles, starts at $70, + $30 family unlimited txt, + $20 PER PHONE minimum for 300mb of data, is $160, $190 month with one line at 5GB of data, or $70 month more than the prepaid package I put together for a family of three, costing $1700 more over 2 years ... which is still $1200 even with a $500 "loyalty bonus".
Shelf price to shelf price, prepaid is way cheaper than most post paid equivalent plans, as the OP claimed, granted occasional sales / promo exceptions.
YMMV

That is a great thread. That thread does make some good points about prepaid, and compares some postpaid to prepaid prices, AND, shows how to set things up in a nice convenient, prepaid way its a great thread ... BUT,
OP here is more "WHY are people paying so much more on contract plans, it doesn't make sense?" Other's have pointed out that FAMILY plans may make sense, in the "OWN YOUR CELL SERVICE", they mostly just compare single line plans, and do not address the possible LACK of savings for multiple lines.
Now, I have defended the PREPAID savings, and compared ONE possible prepaid package to both current members 3 line plan (no prepaid savings given Teo's current pricing) and that same prepaid plan to a current (as of 8/2012) ATT family plan and shown great savings.
SO, so far in this thread we're 1-1 for savings on family plans.
AND, I'll throw in that for folks with multiple lines with 1 or more TABLETS, that the jury is even more still out there if prepaid is better, the new verizon and ATT tablet contract plans might be really attractive.
Of course, our discussions on "which plans is prepaid much cheaper for" STILL doesn't answer the OP's question of "WHEN PREPAID PLANS ARE CHEAPER, WHY DO PEOPLE NOT BUY THEM? " although some of us have hypothesized some possibilities.
Great thread so far ....

I'll hazard another guess. How long have the prepaid plans been around with "just as good service"? I think TMO JUST recently came out with a 4g high speed prepaid option, right?
Perhaps "all these users are in these contracts" because two years ago contracts WERE better than prepaid, and these folks haven't bothered to check , and might not until their contracts are up and they shop again. I guess that's as good a guess as any.

5 lines, that IS a great price. Right now, 3 lines, 5 gigs of data with T-mobile, is $210 per month, 24 month contract, so you're 5 lines for $140 is really good.
I'll ALSO point out .... ". $5 Add-A-Line Offer: $5 monthly recurring charges until 1/2/2014 for voice and messaging services on lines added to qualifying Classic family plan. As of 1/2/2014, regular monthly service pricing will apply to all added lines. New activation of an additional line to a qualifying Classic family plan required; maximum three added lines. "
So, if you were to sign up TODAY for a 24 month contract, that 3rd line will cost you only $5 a month for 18 months, but .. who knows WHAT you will HAVE to pay for the last 6 months of your contract?
/shrug, I guess if you get a super can't buy again guaranteed not to change contract plan, then, in those cases, prepaid isn't as good for families.
I still can't get to "contracts are in general better than prepaid for multi line families". Any one got any examples of currently advertised multi line plans being a better deal than a collection of prepaids?
It makes SENSE that a family plan, where you're sharing 5gb of data between 5 people should be cheaper than 5 seperate plans each with 2GB of data, but, does anyone have such an example?

yeah off the shelf probably not, but since most ppl are already on contracts, they can get into the loyalty contracts.. meaning plans only available when renewing. Most ppl of course will go for the free phones and stuff, but they should really go for the other set of plans.. forget the name, but they're much better deals. i think my plan is based 79.99 with text and 2gb internet + $5 add on lines. so 80 + 15, opt for 5gb internet for 2 main lines so additional 2x $10 and another 5gb line thats another $20 total is like
80 + 15 + 40 = 135 then + taxes and crap < $145.
But the thing is.. my 2gb data only costs $10 if i choose that route so it can actually probably be $112 or so
I got a Free SGS2 from T Mobile. I have 500 min plan + unlimited data with 2GB high speed i.e. $39 + $20 - 12% corporate discount(not present in Prepaid) + Taxes = $62 approx.
I was prevoiusly using Unlimited all T Mobile prepaid $50 plan which $55 after taxes.
I have SipDroid, GrooveIP, WiFi Calling all enabled(i am 90% of the time connected to Wifi)
So its only $7/month extra i pay plus i get free SGS2 phone.
This tempted me to go for contract.
This is a really good and interesting thread. I am seeing that for some people in some situations contracts are less expensive than anything prepaid has to offer. Particularly some family plans where some users have very limited needs. It seems to make a lot of sense in those instances.
However, I would be willing to bet those situations are the vast minority and that the reality is that most people are paying tons of cash on contract mainly due to advertising and marketing. That and the emotional need to be associated with a big brand name, a force I've come to understand is REALLY powerful for US citizens who are bombarded by more advertisements than any other human population in the history of our species.
I came across a very interesting article a couple weeks ago discussing the cost of broadband Internet in my home country, the USA, versus the cost in other countries. The study was very detailed. It illustrated how US companies charge much more for less service than any other companies on the planet.
Now I know that is for broadband Internet, land based, but increasingly these services are merging. And what it suggests is that these carriers charge way more than what would otherwise be competitive in a system with real competition (not the case in the USA where industry monopoly or duopoly exists in just about every industrial sector). The name of the study for those interested was The Cost of Connectivity.
I think the clock is ticking on these contracts. People are getting smarter about how they spend their money. These big telcos are gonna be forced to accept slimmer profit margins.

In the article, did they adjust for the "cost of living"? For example, a gallon of gas in Chicago I saw at $4.15, in central NJ I just paid $3.40. Similarly, the price of TYLENOL varies by where you are in the USA.
In some countries, EVERYTHING is cheaper, labor, land, houses, etc., so I might expect the price of broadband to be cheaper in those countries too, since the cost to lay the cables could be phenomenally cheaper than the USA (labor rates, right?). Now, as a % of INCOME, I would expect broadband to be cheaper in the USA.
Just wondering.
Thanks!
I think the article was the speed provided by isp how Korea and a few other countries are charging for less on faster lines. But I'm pretty sure they didn't consider that countries like korea is a hell lot smaller and the houses and businesses are a lot more compact compared to the vast wasted land of America. So it's like they have less distribution centers or whatever they're called which means less workers to pay so less money out of their pockets... basically the isp is putting less money out meaning they can charge less for lines.
But it's okay google is going yo have their gbit line soon.

ATT Next Promotion

I just walked into a att store just to check out some cases and get some information on when I will be able to update / trade in my note 3... I walked out with $15 off my monthly bill! They have a promotion going on right now. Go check it out yourself.

It's not a promotion it's their new Mobile Share Value plan. Every Next device, device that's completed a two-year contract, and customer owned device receives $15 off the monthly device charge. Here's the catch. While the prices for the data packages remain the same (Mobile Share<>Mobile Share Value) the cost per subsidized device on the Value plan goes up $10. So if you a subsidized device and a non-subsidized device on the same plan you'll end up saving $5 ($-15 non-subsidized device $+10 subsidized device = $-5). I have two non-subsidized devices and my monthly charges dropped $30.
Thanks for the info. I will go into an AT&T Store, over the weekend, and see if I can benefit from this. I have a Note 3 that was given to me by Best Buy, as an insurance replacement. I'm not knowledgeable, but doesn't that mean I own the device?? I talked to AT&T this even, by coincidence, seeing what they could do to lower my monthly bill. I mentioned switching over to T-Mobile, and the offers started pouring in. I got six months free unlimited texting, my bill for this month was reduced by almost half, and I was given 5,000 extra rollover minutes! The retentions rep was also going to give me an early upgrade on the spot, somehow not realizing I already owned a really new phone. It would be cool to see if I can also get this $15/mo off of my bill, too!
Here's a comparison of the new vs. old Mobile Share plans. I don't think the old one's offered any longer. You can see that the new pricing can save you money under certain circumstances and cost you money in others. The old plan lowered the monthly price you paid per device based added to the plan with larger data plans being charged lower monthly device fees. The new plan is flat.
That was a game changer what T - Mobile announced at CES... I'm staying with att though. After 7 years of sprint and horrible service att has been very good to me. Plus the service is outstanding in my area

So what does this mean?
if you have a phone out of contract you can save money? If you upgrade your phone the usual way with the 2 year contract they charge you a little more...and if you go with the next plan what happens?
thanks sorry for the ignorance but the post to me isnt 100% clear

Still confused, myself. Talked to someone at AT&T last night. They were really apprehensive about entertaining my question about this plan, as I only have a single line. There's a lot of conflicting information out there. I've literally seen some reports which state that if you only have a single line of service, and you either own your device or are off contract, AT&T will automatically move you to this Mobile Share Value Plan, and you save $15/month. However, I've seen other reports that mention this plan is only really beneficial for multiple lines of service. And, the AT&T rep I spoke to, also backed up the latter. She stated it would cost more for a person with a single line, in the long run, so she doesn't recommend that plan to people like me. So, I don't know what to believe. Details seem really sketchy and all over the place.
didn't save me any money because i have too many lines to benefit. AT&T already discounts each line as you add more and more. switching to this actually increased the cost for some of my lines from $30 to $40 so it offset the savings of switching to the $15/line plan. YMMV
I still don't know why anyone in their right mind would sign up for the next promotion.

In case your one of those people who like to keep current tech. With this plan you can get the newest phone each year and not have to be on a two year contract or pay a large amount up front for the phone.

You "own" your device. You are still under the terms of the contract you signed when you purchased the original phone. The phone you got as a replacement "junk out" does qualify as a phone purchased as full price. The $15 off per month only applies to AT&T Mobile Share Value Plans, it sounds like you are on the old Minute plans. You are getting a better deal with the promo that AT&T is giving you now, switching plans would could potentially cost you more.
I hope this is helpful.
Also check out this website:

It breaks down the different plans AT&T offers and thankfully it's closer to plain english.

No, he is still under a contract for the previous device. Once the 2 years from the device he purchased originally from Best Buy is over then he would qualify for the $15 off with the new mobile share value plans. As of right now he is still "paying" for the original device as device costs are built into the old AT&T plans.
I hope this clears that up a bit, if not let me know.

Its really a great deal. Nothing down and your plan drops 15 bucks a month to 25 per line and whatever the days is. We have have 10 gigs where we used to pay 120 for it 10 GB has gone down to 100. Each line that is on the next plan goes down to 25 a month from 40 a month.
I thank T-Mobile for keeping he pressure on them
