simple root for I9506 - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just like the famous song "all I want for x-mas is root". Not a rooted ROM. No new recovery.
I don't care about the bloatware: TB gets rids of the things I don't like
does anyone have a short guide (sticky?) on how to do this for the 9506?
[OT] for an older tablet I used the very infamous and NOT recommended vroot program - under special circumstances using a closed network and Titanium Backup to freeze and thereafter to replace the superuser app with Chainfire's SuperSU - rooting and cleanup succeeded for a device that was considered not rootable after ASUS released an Android 4.3 update. But I'm hoping for an easier method for this particular S4. [/OT]

tf300 with stock jb question

hello guys, i'm relatively new here but i figure this may be the place for android rooting. okay, so i read some of the stickies on top and i understand that the tf300 can be rooted when you go form ics to jb, and then rooting..
however i bought my tf300 around nov and by that time asus already installed the jb on my tablet. i still kept my version at 4.1.1 since i've always wanted to root it just never really got the chance to do so.
the step by step is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1845377
but i'm curious if i already have the jb 4.1.1 can i just skip to step 3? or is it something completely different?

I'd follow one of the methods in this thread here. Depends on what looking to do if just root and on jb best to follow the motochopper method. If you want roms , recovery etc best to follow the ops method of update to 4.2.1 then root but there's some catches as in the new 4.2.1 its limited and touch due to the update asus made for multiple users and the bootloader. Many users have gotten stuck and uncrecoverably bricked due to not following instructions as to what version of twrp to use with the 4.2.1 update. So all depends if you want to update then root or stay on older firmware. Just a note if do decide to update be sure to use the patched version of twrp which is version 2.4.4.0. As it will brick you and as of now no way to fix and many are getting stuck.
A word of caution be sure to read follow and read more on the threads in the forum you'll see alot of users getting bricked and thats due to the 4.2.1 update and not following instructions because asus really messed thing up for us with the update. Been following these threads my self since got my tf300 and haven't seen so many people getting bricked before. If anything be sure to ask and read as much as can before attempting but as i'm not too familiar with 4.1.1 i do know its safer to root that than it is 4.2.1 but most want to be updated then root. Good luck and heres a good thread to follow.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2187982
A note the current firmware version is 10.6.1.8 so may have to update to that not sure if would have to do each update till get to 4.2.1 but easiest way is to download from asustek website and place them on root of sdcard or internal storage one by one and update then worry about rooting as if you root while on 4.1.1 you would only have to redo any way once get to 4.2.1. Any othere questions best to post in the thread i posted for you and don't be affriad to ask before bricking.

Well for just root here the thread for the motochopper method. No unlock or custom recovery but it seems to work for everyone and safe to try.

This is the most recent root for JB. It does not require unlocking. Looking through the thread it appears to work well. Maybe read and see what you think.
I've been using adobe flash 11.1.115.48. Seems to work use some sports streaming apps myself and also use the stock browser. Whats sports streaming apps u use been looking for a good one most are crap couple are ok looking for a good one. Theres a thread on here some where about the flash its an ics version but says it works for jb. Can do a google search should be easy to find.

i've been using live sports pro. it works well on my ics but the links don't even work on my jb tablet. when i try clicking it link it expands and then it quickly retracts.
Yea thats sort of the issue i've been having i use sport tv and a hockey one. The game or programs always load and can watch but When i click for full screen it just shows blank. Get sound in the back ground but no picture then it won't shut down and have to back out then kill the task in task manager to get it to stop. True it maybe to flash not working properly but wasn't sure if theres much you can do about that when not rooted so just been sticking with the version i posted which seems to work but to a point. Usually if wont go to full screen i just expand the picture to as large as it will go usually can fill most of the screen. If anything come for flash i'll let you know but haven't found anything better than that yet since google dropped the support. Like said i also use the stock browser that seems to work for justintv and frontrow sports and some others as long as i have the flash installed though. Just hate most of the apps the the adds and crap that get in the way when trying to load the game or shows trying to watch.
hey guys i just want to give you a quick update. i ran the motochopper and it seems that i have successfully rooted my tablet. i'll be trying out a couple of programs to see if it works. obviously if i have any other questions or concerns i'll let you know
i'd like to thank you guys for helping me out throughout this process. i'm sure we'll meet again sometime.

[Q] Rooting the Samsung Galaxy SGH-I337

I've never rooted my phone before, but I'm very familiar with customizing the phone, etc. I also read about custom ROMS and was wondering if flashing my ROM is the same and/or similar to rooting the device or once the device is rooted, do you then decide what type of ROM you want to use to put on the device and is there specific advantages/disadvantages to different ROMs developed by different people? Is there a particular favorite someone would use over another? Please let me know because I've decided to try rooting my S4 today. After the latest Android 4.3 update, some things haven't been working particularly well since I had already installed other apks from newer versions of Android (like the newer camera and gallery), and after the latest update, things just don't seem to run as smoothly so I've decided to wipe the device and start from scratch again. So I've seen threads about ways to root the device but is one way better than another and the same goes with custom ROMs (and whether this is the same thing or not)?
MJ9 Root
Well, I also just read in another thread that there currently isn't a way to root the I337 4.3 Build number ending in MJ9. So does this mean I can't root this device and I'm stuck restoring it back to how it was?

Well, as you have asked several questions in here, I have moved to Q and A. We don't allow "best rom" discussion as that can only be determined by the individual.
The other questions are, however, "ok" to ask, and I know the many helpful users here will certainly jump in with assistance!

Root Method Found for VZW Galaxy Tab 2 (I705VRBMI1)

Please link this to all the development threads in the Galaxy Tab 2 7'' section. This is my first XDA post and it wont let me post to a developer thread X.X
Anyways, I found through some digging a root method that works on the most recent build for the Verizon Galaxy Tab 2.
The original thread where this was discussed is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1885558&nocache-1
but it is no longer up to date, and the OP doesn't own the device anymore.
The current Saferoot method works and the version I used is right here. All credit to developers, I just found the link on an S4 forum.

hi @videogamehawk79
i know this thread is old but I just got one of these devices for free and would like to update it to at least 4.4.4, 5.x or 6.x for my daughter.
you mention you successfully rooted using the method in the 2nd link.
Were you able to successfully install any version within the first thread?
Do you happen to still have any of the required files by chance as the links in the original thread are dead.
use kingo root for windows... it works link a charm (kingoapp.com)
is there any bootloader unlock for VRBMI1 firmware? i recently got a free tab, but seems like most stuff is already outdated.
Did you ever get the boot loader unlocked, so that you could install a new rom on your tab S2?
If so I'd like to do the same!
Thanks for any reply

Nope.
Ok. Thanks for confirmation ?
I breathed some new life in mine:
I stripped away unused apps;
Uninstalled all updates to bloatware (& turned off automatic updates in play store settings to prevent them from gobbling up app space again);
added a lightweight launcher (Holo);
lightweight browser with security features I hope are still worthy (dolphin);
Disabled both battery-saving settings;
and added fresh wallpapers which spruce it up too.
It's a fair bit snappier now.
I'm open to any tips others have employed on this device to pick up it's speed for some general use.

[Q] New to rooting and other related definitions

Dear XDA-Dev members,
I'm sorry in advance for my English, but I'll try my best.
For a long time, I never really wanted to root my phone, mainly because of the risks. That all changed lately and now I'm willing to root it, especially for the extra possibilities. I've been searching for a while now and found many different methods of rooting and a lot of definitions I'm not really aware of. So I got a few questions and I hope someone is willing to help me with this.
What exactly do definitions like, ROM, Stock ROM, flashing, whiping and root-related definitions mean? I guess it's some important knowledge for when I want to root my phone.
How do I know what builds are suitable for my phone? I recently updated to Android Lollipop and wish to keep that. I noticed a lot of functions are missing (Samsung???).
What exactly is the XPosed Framework and its modules I've been reading about?
Which method would be the easiest to use for rooting for the first time?
... And for installing a custom Android build?
My current installed apps/games/launcher (Apex), will these be gone? Or can they be restored?
Are there any other important things I need to know?
I don't have an external SD card yet, but I really need to get one, as my internal storage is getting kinda full.
At last, I've included my device information here: imgur.com/a/eKm1F (can't post the link directly due to XDA's anti-spam-thingy)
I really hope someone is willing to help me. Thank you in advance!
Start by reading this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419762
- What exactly do definitions like, ROM, Stock ROM, flashing, whiping and root-related definitions mean? Can be easily found by a simple google search
- What exactly is the XPosed Framework and its modules I've been reading about? Can also be found by a simple search.
- How do I know what builds are suitable for my phone? I recently updated to Android Lollipop and wish to keep that. I noticed a lot of functions are missing (Samsung???). Every up to date custom rom is based Lollipop. And no there are no functions missing.
- For rooting you should use cf auto-root i9505. Type it in the search bar in the right corner of your screen.
- For installing custom roms you need a custom recovery. Use Philz of TWRP.
Last tip. Start reading and just do it. You can't destroy your phone.
Thank you. But once again, how do I know what custom rom is suitable for my device?
I'll read all the links posted.

Everyone rom that's in the I9505 section.
Xpose is not available to lollipop yet.
Check the most popular Roms and start from there.
If u are already at Lolipoo , You'll probably need to update the bootloader to the same of the rom u intent to flash.
U must learn how to use ODIN. U could easy flash a pre rooted rom from ODIN.
Roms, bootloaders, modems and kernel is what u can change.
Bootloader only if needed, modem also.
Roms and kernels I do keep up to date.
Start with Imperium ROM maybe.
Flash by ODIN a recovery, like TWRP, reboot recovery, wipe everything and flash the rom.
Pretty simple but u must read a lot to not get lost in the way.
Welcome
Since is your first time. Search for IMEI backup. I've never used my backup but heard some scary stories about lost imei.

Xposed is available for Android 5.0.1 but is still being tested and refined.
Before attempting to do ANYTHING, install Wanam EFS Backup and back up the IMEI. Losing the IMEI is not fun.
Other than that, start reading and stop asking what the best ROM is. The best ROM is the one that meets your needs.
How long does it usually take for xposed to update to android 5.1?

Yes.
Look in the Xposed thread.
I don't use Xposed on my S4 as the ROM I use has built-in virtually everything I would have used Xposed for. Xposed for my Android 2.3.7 device is a different story. I need it there for the Master Key fix, since I no longer update the custom ROM I made for the device.

Lenovo TB3-850F root?

Just got this tablet today for around the house use light gaming watching YouTube and reading books on it but i can't find any info on this thing and what I do find is conflicting box says 1.00ghz on the 8inch website says 1.30ghz and a completely different cpu, mines manufacturer date was a month ago so I thought I had the latest model it has android 6.0 on it from the factory
Question is its pretty slow in basic games and Web browsing etc is there any info on rooting this or installing a rom allowing over clocking, I'd like to get the performance up a bit if possible.. I have noticed it cuts all cores off but one during some tasks and makes it come to a stand still almost so if I could root just to stop that I'd be happy
Kingroot, maybe?
https://kingroot.net/
I'd be hesitant, though; since it doesn't seem like there's any TWRP - and you'd def want a backup of the system before you root, or OTAs will be a nope.
kingroot failed, requested root and it shows 1 request so i doubt there is any root available for it right now its too new

Have you tried Kingo Root (via kingoapp.com)?
I was able to rooot my TB3-710F (Android 5.0.1 lollipop) with their windows version after a few attempts. Not sure if there was a trick to it or not. Have flashed back to stock and will try again to see if I can repeat.
Android 6.0 probably fixed most known exploits.

Any news? Does smb succeed with TWRP or root on device?
Hi All,
This is perfect thread, I was trying to find info on this Tablet, and there is hardly anything about it...
Has anyone managed to find / know, or get TWRP or CWM onto this device yet?? I was planning on picking one up tomorrow, but it all depends if there is a Custom Recovery available for it....
I see there is a custom recovery available for last years smaller 7" brother Tablet.... Please, let it be so....

On my TB3-850F I notice that Lenovo doesn't really add bloat to begin with. The non-standard apps can simply be uninstalled in the usual way. After years of using Samsung (Note, Note II, Tab 2) this is a refreshing change for me (on Samsung stock ROM the "extra" apps are baked in and can be frozen but not truly uninstalled; OK you can kind of uninstall them with 3C or Titanium but you can't actually reclaim any space so you might as well just freeze them).
Anyway I think a pre-rooted stock ROM is a good idea as there is no Chainfire Auto Root or similar yet and from the other forum posts on this device it's clear that people struggle when using adb and fastboot and TWRP if they are not already familiar with these kinds of tools and environments.

Lenovo is certainly more sparing on the bloat than manufacturers like Samsung for sure, not to mention all the bloat that comes pre-installed on the bulk of carrier branded devices. There are several Google related applications, however, which are baked in. With deodexing, lib removals, app data and app cache, I have been able to free up nearly 500 MB of space, leaving the end user with a bare bones Google infrastructure -- Google Play Services, Framework, Play Store, etc. More and more Android enthusiasts are becoming focused on privacy, and are steering away from all the Google centered applications.
Yeah on root I'm including a patched boot image for full systemless root support, using @Chainfire's SuperSU v2.79 TWRP flashable zip. I've made a couple of stability tweaks to the TWRP custom recovery already available for this tablet as well.
Oh, keep in mind on this particular MTK Board Platform and partitioning index, the /system image partition is allotted to 3.0GB. With bloat removed and some cleanup, the /system partition can be re-sized to 2.3GB using ext4fs, leaving 700MB to be carried back over to the /data partition.
