[Q] MOJO mod questions - M.O.J.O. General

Okay, saw this can be rooted now.
So my questions, desire for advice, are....
1) Would there be a benefit of installing a custom rom?
2) Will installing a custom rom erase necessary programs that will allow the controller to successfully map to the games I want to play?
3) I'm really only get this because I want to use a good PSX emulator that can use the chip's power to use the shaders and give the games a good HD makeover. This should be more than possible with something like this, right? Basically I'm creating a super PSX device + some N64 emulator. My hope is that I can play this games on 1080p on my television, using either the controller that comes with it, or at least my PS3 controller.
4) Would using apps that overclock this device help game performance?
Should I wait to root this when the official MOJO kitkat android update comes out or does it matter?
Thanks for all your advice!

1) Would there be a benefit of installing a custom rom?
For psx emulation, I doubt it.
2) Will installing a custom rom erase necessary programs that will allow the controller to successfully map to the games I want to play?
Again, not really the controller is easy to map as is (at least with the ouya's emulators)
3) I'm really only get this because I want to use a good PSX emulator that can use the chip's power to use the shaders and give the games a good HD makeover. This should be more than possible with something like this, right? Basically I'm creating a super PSX device + some N64 emulator. What you want can be done on the MOJO, just depends on the games.
I haven't tried PSX emulation, but N64 is pushing it- playable but very laggy at least with mupen64plus AE.

I can confirm NES.emu, SuperGNES, GBC.emu, GBA.emu, DraStic, FPSE, NEO.emu, MD.emu, PCE.emu, SAT.emu, PPSSPP, and SuperN64 (A branch of Mupen64).
All work flawlessly except PPSSPP (doesn't support the D-PAD at the moment, and sound is laggy). Also, DraStic is really wonky because it models the DS touchscreen....Works with a mouse, but that feels strange to use the controller and a mouse....Then again, it's sort of like using a Wii. Heh..

The mojo's controller is better, the PS3 controller will have to be wired in I think.
The R1/R2 might be only digital and not analog depends on the emulator detection of R1/R2.
4) Would using apps that overclock this device help game performance?
Yes it would, but not sure how playable the games would be.
Should I wait to root this when the official MOJO kitkat android update comes out or does it matter?
It's nice that it can be rooted, but I don't really need it, I'm fine waiting for kitkat, but if you want to overclock then you'll need to root it.
I'll be installing FPSE and SuperN64 soon, I'll let you know how I go :fingers-crossed:

Yes, please do!
One last question. You mentioned that the N64 emulator isn't running well on this. Isn't there one on the Ouya??? I could only imagine that on that one, using the much lesser chip (the tegra 3) it would run like crap, if at all.
Im I missing something? Or is this an accurate observation?

SuperN64 is decent, but there really isn't a good N64 emulator at this time. They're all built from the exact same code, just changed the names, really. When one updates, they all seem to update within a few days. My judgement that SuperN64 is flawless has gone out the window because it cannot run Conker at decent speed....One of my all-time favorite games. I still like it, though. From what I've read, I think N64oid is probably a bit less laggy.
Also, I've not tried with it yet (I don't have a cable to root, so I cannot install the mapping software), but the PS3 controller is compatible without needing the cable. It connects with BT, just as it does on tablets or phones.

I don't have an ouya but if you youtube ouya's N64 videos you'll see.
The mojo's is playable, overclocking would help but not sure by how much.
I'll do a youtube video of N64 and PSX on mojo
@ExtremeRyno, I'll try Conker tonight using my mupen64plus AE see what FPS I get

How soon until MOJO gets an update and KitKat?
Any idea if this is coming soon?
Any idea on what the update will fix in terms of bugs, etc?

@ExtremeRyno, I tryied Conker using my mupen64plus AE, at 300% it's laggy but not too bad, the sound is messed up tho.
Pretty crappy you have to sit through the intro lol
Anyway I have my settings there so you can see it.
@Pleiades7, I also did some other random games too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGbdTEVF2pw
I couldn't get any of the free PSX emulators working on my iso's.
I'll try again next week and I'll install the other N64 emulators, but I'm pretty happy with mupen.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think it's possible to make PSX games look or perform any better than they did on the original playstation hardware. Emulators are made to best mirror the hardware the games were originally intended to run on. I think that's why some roms wont work or have trouble playing on any emulator for that reason. Sure your playing the games on a 1080p TV through the MOJO, but that doesn't automatically convert the games themselves to HD quality.

I get that. But those games blown up on a big 1080p look pixelated and really show their age anyways.
BUT an emulator like FPse includes OpenGL plugins that redraw the textures and graphics in a way I don't fully understand but transform those games. Just try Twisted Metal 2 on your PS3. Then open up a emulator on your MOJO and play the same game in FPse but turn on the high res open gl plugin. Not only will you feel the difference, but you will swear you are playing a different game. No where was that more apparent than in the Resident Evil Games. Pixelated zombies which might have been novel long ago feel dated now. But those filters on FPse and PCSXreloaded , etc., redraw the monsters in a way that is now thematically coherent and gives the games a fresh coat of paint they always deserved, especially fun considering you couldn't play those games in HD back in the day.
In any case, that's what fun about these things for me. The chance to preserve great games in all their glory and then some.

I haven't messed around with Fpse that much to realize it can use OpenGL. That's pretty cool, kinda anxious to try it out now

I've got shaders enabled, and it runs just swell. Crash Bandicoot looks great, and games like Wipeout still run at 100%.

I will check that out this evening. Thanks for the tip.

Just wondering if anyone has tried to install a custom recovery and do a nandroid backup. I didn't know how different this device differs from a phones software.

I don't know, if someone of the developers knows a working way to flash a working custom recovery.
As you can see in the way how the root method works, there seems no other way to get out of bootloader/fastboot mode, as to unplug the USB and power cable.
That means, you can't be simple do "fastboot boot xxx.img" and boot a temporarily kernel or recovery.
I have tried it with some of the kernel/recovery images from Nvidia Shield, but after loading the image, it stucks in bootloader.

ANY GOOD PS1 Emulators??????

If you didn't know already, im a pro gamer.
And i usually get sent out to Los Angeles to film some Footage for Directv.
And sometimes, i get to play live.
I usually end up play Classics, like Tekken 3 for the Ps1
And i have tekken 3 for pc and Ps1...
But i was wondering, if i could put it on my Mobile Windows?
So that i can play in the airplain, or just to keep my skills sharp.
I know the possessor of my Hermes is strong enough (400Mhz)
Let me know if theres any Emulators that let me play ISO.
Thanks
Emulation isn't all that easy.
Also, why don't you already own a PSP for this purpose? PSX ISOs work decently.

Emulation on the HTC Tilt 2?

After 5 years on an HTC Apache, I figured I'd bite the bullet and sign a new contract for a updated Pocket PC, so I switched to AT&T and got the Tilt 2. One of my favorite things about my old Apache was all the emulators! NES, Genesis, SNES, GBA, absolutely love it! But I've tried redownloading the newest versions of all emulators and even using my old .exes and .cabs I used on the Apache. So far, I've had no success.
PocketGBA - Starts up and flashes the menu screen, but not even a second later crashes with a series of "We're Sorry, this program has stopped working" screens.
PocketSNES - Starts up and lets you browse the menus before loading a ROM, all keyboard buttons, with the exception of the direction keys, show up as the same address, and when you attempt to load a ROM, crashes to the same "We're Sorry, this program has stopped working" screen.
Just to let you know, I'm running a stock AT&T ROM, hoping to change that soon (Maybe that's part of the problem). Also, I've yet to try Picodrive for Genesis or Pocket Nester. Just would like to hear feedback from anyone who has had any success with these emulators or any others. I also heard that PSX emulation is possible on this phone, I'm not holding my breath on that, but like I said, just looking to hear if anyone got anything working.
emulators
Try smartgear, it's has all the old favorite emulators built in, i.e. NES, SNES, GBA, Genesis, etc. It's not freeware, but well worth the small amount of change for everything this app does.

I agree completely, GREAT emulator got it after another member here recommended it.
There is a trial version so make sure you try it out to see how you like it.
Smartgear? After about 3 hours of searching, I never even saw that name pop up! I will definitely check that out.
That coves a good amount of what I want do, but that still leaves GBA and PSX, any word on those two?

For PSX, I use FpseCE. So far, I've been able to load Spyro and play it but it is little sluggish. I am not using any enhanced 3D driver on my phone so I don't know if that would improve the performance or not...
For GBA, I have tried PocketGBA but I have a hard time with the controls. I'm not sure what it is capable of. I haven't seen any progress on it so I think it may have been abandoned..
For the keyboard, there is a cab out there called KforRaphael, and another called KforTouchPro. I don't remember where I downloaded them, but I'm fairly certain I found them somewhere on xda. KforRaphael seemed to work for me (although w/ still limited button mapping), while KforTouchPro did not. You may have different luck, though.
the PSX resident evil series on FpseCE 0.10 run great with sound. Check out my TP2 in action on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fO-rrxJsr8s

this cellphone is the best for emus, even if decent exclusive games take a long time I think the wait won't be that bad.

You will not be able to pick up n64oid as it has been taken off the market to work better. Developer put it up on his twitter I think I remember reading.

NESoid, SNESoid, N64oid works great.
FPse has some problems with the compability of games. But games that actually load works good.
Hi,
Doesn't the xperia play come with its own ps1 emulator?
I heard that there are official ps1 games in the market.
Also if it has its own ps1 emulator does it play ALL ps1 games?
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
yes there is an app or function to play ps1 games already on the phone but SE are using some wierd setup/format for their games to run with it, i've checked crash bandicoot files already, never seen the format before. so its not a case of drag and drop your old ps1 classic ISOs on the mem card and be done with.
try FPse for ps1 emulation. not as good or compatible with all games like the official playstation pocket app is, but until someone finds out a way to port games from ISOs to the format SE are using, its our only option.

when i try it always backspaces out of the menu , i can map all the other buttons just fine except the O button
i havnt seen anyone else complain about that so im guessing there is a way around this?
O is generally the "back" button. In Snes9x EX I had to remap the exit key since it was the O standard.

Hey guys, I'm sitting here with a brand new Xperia Play and I just converted from iPhone. I'm a rather experienced jailbreaker and have been on the iPhone train since the first model. I'm feeling so lost on Droid that I just barrely managed to change the wallpaper, haha, just so u know what kind of situation I'm in.
So, I downloaded a couple of emulators but I can't seem to get them to run games.
I figure this is because my device isn't rooted?
If that's the case, can someone give me a dummie guide on how to root the xperia play? I'm on gingerbread 2.3.2. Thx.

At the moment, there's no way to root the Xperia play. However, you will most likely not need root for anything you want to do, as this is Android and not iOS. Root on Android is usually used to install custom roms, themes, to overclock the device or tune CPU settings and the like. Everything else, like emulators, works right out of the door.
Every emulator works differently, some of them require a bios rom. You'll have to look around to find out how to get them.

Every emulator works differently, but all of them require a bios rom. You can get one of those installed easily by downloading the app "Emulator Roms" and pick one of the roms, for example a GBA game. When you choose it, you can either press "download" or "One Click Setting GBA BIOS" - press that button and you're ready to go on GBA. It works the same for SNES and whathave you ^^

That's pretty much it, yep. It's not all that different than an emulator on your PC would work.
The EmulatorROM site that the emulator provided isn't available for download so I found another program but it just downloaded the 7zip files, which are unusable? Should I connect to a PC and unzip in the folder to make it work? :X

[ Discussion]-The one game you always go back to.

This isn't a ratings topic or a top whatever topic...This is a topic of what game you just can't get enough of. Don't get me wrong there's a lot of great games out there. I'm curious of the diversity of the crowd/ XP community.
For me...its Minecraft. I started playing it on android & after uninstalling to check out other games, I always bring it back. I like how smooth it runs. Its the one game that I have truly never had a problem with...but enough about my choice.

And Asphalt 7, but since i do development of roms, i mainly change roms so i dont stick with much gamez.
Being a classic gamer, I bought my xperia play mainly for emulators. The first console game I ever owned was Sonic 1 for the master system. Even these can always pick that up and not get bored
I found that the xperia play is great with NES and GBA emulators, maybe I'll try to get a SNES one soon as well.

My Boy! is my favourite. The UI is tidy and easy to follow. It has the ability to disable linear filtering. Cheat support was included with the latest update. I get full speed in all the games I play without needing to use frameskip.
VGBA has good compatibility but the UI sucks and is battery heavy. Also the developer is employing dirty tricks like preventing people with LP installed from using the app.
GBA.emu you would expect to be good but performs very poorly on the Xperia PLAY and other single core devices. You get lag every 10-15s with frameskip on, and is slow as hell/unplayable with frameskip off.
Gameboid used to be my favourite until My Boy! replaced it. Both Gameboid and My Boy! are similar in the UI and performance. My Boy! is slightly better in both those areas, and seeing as Gameboid is no longer being developed, it made sense to buy My Boy!.
Sonic episodes 1 & 2
I allways go back to them!!
Draw Something... Yea yea yea, make fun of me, I keep uninstalling it because nobody plays it. I always go back to installing it after a few weeks without it because I feel like playing with someone. Nobody plays it anymore, so I uninstall it. Repeat process.

Always fifa 12 or MC3
Fifa 12 was the first game i got too
Windjammers for NeoGeo. Can't stop.

epsxe on Shield TV.

Just wondering if anyone is willing to share which epsxe settings work best for them? I just want the best all rounder type settings, I don't understand enough about what they mean to be able to come up with something decent on my own.
Right now the settings are standard and the images can sometimes look a bit wobbly.
Thanks

Use Fpse. The sounds by epsxe is terrible. Fpse has the most settings for the best high quality.
But for Epsxe use the OpenGl Video Plugin.
Thanks. All my googling suggested epsxe was the best with fpse close second, but I will take a look.
Will take a look at opengl on epsxe to, right now I'm just using hardware.

Yes, the opinions are different. Everyone should try it out.
Epsxe has the best compatibility and fpse has a better sound and more graphics settings. Here is a video where you can see how the epsxe and fpse works.

I haven't done a lot with it yet, but I loaded RetroArch which is free!!! I have some roms on it and they run well. SFA3, Resident Evil, Crash Bandicoot. So far so good. It's a little confusing to set up, but there was a YouTube video that was really helpful to get it up and running.
Plus it is one emulator that runs SNES, Genesis, MAME, etc. Definitely try it!
