Why I am getting rid of my Moto G for the RAZR I. - RAZR i General

I have the RAZR i about a year ago, was really happy with it, but the app compatibility annoyed me too much, now fast forward to now, I own a Moto G, this is my first Motorola device since I gave up the RAZR i a year ago, and wow I have missed Motorola, every phone I have had from them has been so reliable.
BUT there are downsides and reasons why I am now going to switch BACK to the RAZR i from the MOTO G.
8 megapixel vs 5 megapixel: RAZR i wins here, not that I use my phone for photography, but the Moto G camera awful, everything looks painted!
Design: Well not saying the MOTO G design is bad, but let's face it, the RAZR i takes the crown without a doubt in design.
IPS vs AMOLED: even though the Moto G does have a higher pixel density, doesn't say that the RAZR i screen is awful, and I have always preferred AMOLED over IPS, but thats personal preference.
Micro SD: The Moto G doesn't have one!!
web browsing speed: I did a side by side comparison with my friends RAZR i, the RAZR i is a second quicker, despite been less powerful, speaks for itself.
These reasons mean a lot to me and that's why I am switching back. And maybe it will make you think twice about switching too.
I just hope apps have become more compatible since I last had it :/

Well, the moto G is fine, but not something to see as an upgrade for us razr i users, I'm waiting for the new asus line, I'm very happy with my intel processor, although what I wished for it didn't come true, and remember kids, always update to more, no to less-
edit: the moto g display is tn,not ips.

yeah, I agree, Moto G is equally fine as the razr i. I bought the Moto G for my mom so I had some time comparing the two phones and in the end both have their strengths and flaws. I would say, if you have neither of the two phones and want to switch to a medium spec phone then go for the G, but if you are using the i at the moment and think about going for the G, I would say it is not worth it.

Read on gsmarena it used a IPS. oh well. And i now own the RAZR i, it's brlliant, the design and camera are far superior. But it is a little more laggy.

Moto-G is great but as far as I can see there's no way for it to recognise a car dock. My Defy had a magnetic switch and the Razr i has NFC which works fine for that purpose and maybe for other stuff too (one day...).
I'm using more than 16Gb of my SD card, so space would be an issue.
Definitely not a Razr I replacement for me.
Moving back to ARM would be a positive I think - a couple of apps have recently stopped working after an update (NavFree included) and I think multi-core would help with lag. That said, I've just reduced the lag a lot by uninstalling the updates to the increasing number of Google apps I don't use and disabling them in the app manager so I'm not hassled to update them. I recommend doing that.

I can understand you, because I've already thought about switching to the moto g, too. But I really love my RAZR i and I won't switch so fast!

not meaning to Necro too much but this thread is interesting
being less powerful ... well when you oppose a quadcore versus a singlecore with HT ... yet the Razr i can be on the level of a Quadcore SOC thanks to the 2ghz of the Z2480

i have to say you got to give credit on a single core virtual dual core who do almost as fine as a Exynos 4412/Snapdragon 400... the Razr i still have the Oomph to kick 2013/2014 middle range phone with a quality build and overall good performance
(comming from a ex SGS III custom ROM 21-23K pts user ) so yes ... a Moto G is definitely not a "upgrade"
compatibility indeed the main letdown but yet none of the app i use are non working, bonus: PPSSPP/FPse are smoother than on my SGS III
and also the first phone i keep on stock ... Moto did a awesome job to not "bloat" too much the OS nearly a Nexus experience (feel the google print ... let's hope Lenovo will not let down the 4.4 for the XT890 )
i got my Ri for less than 120$ in a near new state, it still does more than 2 day on moderate use and a bit more than 1 day on heavy use (my kind of heavy use of course) the screen bear just one little scratch
and the rest of the phone is pristine. awesome material and build, good user experience, still actual in term of performances, the camera button is practical and near instant camera app launch from screen off is just awesome.
now who really need, 13mp, QHD UHD, 2gb RAM and more, and over 5" ... not me, that's for sure (and i had several size and model of smartphones/phablet)
ok the 8gb storage is a bit...meh... since no app2sd but i have all my app installed and still 2.5gb free and i use a 32gb UHSI µSD
i need to figure out a way to move the folder for Manga Rock, from main storage to the SD, having 2.5gb for the download is a bit small

So, it's the same CPU, same ram, same display, but +4G, +better camera, + new design, +locked bootloader?
Not worth upgrading imo.
Complete dissapointment. Worse than what apple does. It even looks like crap with the curved edges. See everyone acts like apple is dumb for releasing the same phone. I would be happy with the same looking atrix, faster cpu, 720p screen and better camera. Im done with Motorola.
It also only has 8gb storage which is a major downgrade. CRAP!

its actually not a tegra 2 processor, screen is a little bigger and isnt a pentile display, no fingerprint scanner and they cut the internal memory in half. you also cant use the docks from the atrix 4g. definitely not worth the "upgrade"

WTF Motorola, adding mirror to a new phone that should have been added to the 8 month old one.
Definitely not giving up cm7 for this. In fact I feel it's a downgrade I many respects.

they took away the fingerprint unlock ?
I agree with all the above, it is not worth the changing, especially since no word on the damn bootloader thing is being said. I guess that it will be locked as hell, with no easy unlockin in sight....
I prefer the photon on this crap any day, and wouldnt replace my Atrix for neither...
Boo Motorola! I like my Tegra and pudding thank you very much. not worth the downgrade. things in the original Atrix world are just starting to get interesting.
Where is our hdmi mirroring?!?!?!
I might as well pile on here as well and say LOL. Why the hell would they do this. Oh wait I know. MONEY. Greedy corporations make me vomit.
I cant help but wonder what went through the minds of the people who made this phone. It obviously was not meant as an Atrix replacement at first or it would match the internal storage and have a fingerprint scanner.
Also, no unlocked bootloader = no CM7. Atrix > Atrix 2.
I'm better off waiting for the Nexus Prime!

This is a slap in the face to all Atrix owners. iPhone 4s is a monumental leap forward compared to this.
Why so early ? the Atrix came out in April this year, now the Atrix 2 coming out in October ?
They should be waiting to next year and releasing it with ICS and with stronger CPU.
Well.... guess I'll be rooting and keeping my original Atrix.

It really is depressing that this is what the wireless world is coming to. For a company to release a second version of such an impressive phone.. with LESS features and less memory is just ridiculous. I would never upgrade to such a phone, even for the 'faster' web access. With the Prime coming and ICS, this seems like a desperate attempt to lock more customers in to a contract with a gimmicky sequel. The original Atrix is leaps and bounds ahead of this new version with all the hacks that have been accomplished.. and with nightlies coming, and ICS potentially in the future, I'll be happy to keep my Atrix 1. The only thing that might convince me to change phones is an ICS Prime.

Moto x+1 leaked!

Tktechnews got a first look at moto x+1:
"Some things I can tell you right now. The display is Amazing, all preproduction model devices have a certain color back. Which I cant say to protect the source. And ill most likely have to put tape on the back to hide that.
Ill put it next to the old Moto X for comparison.
SD card slot is confirmed (at least from what ive seen) (you dont think id travel with all that cash without some proof of the device)
Also unexpected goodies! A new moto tablet is in the house for verizon and its a beauty.
And yes I will be dropping images on intagram"
He confirmed the 1080p amoled screen. Also, today he posted a video but i cant post the link here. Check his twitter account: @tktechnews
Cool.
He was trying to say Touchless Controls is not working but he was using "Ok Google" as the trigger. Yeah... mine doesn't trigger with that either, you have to say "Ok Google Now" LOL.
Rookie.
And you have to actually train it (it's not enabled by default, the training enabled the service), at least that's how it's been on the Droid MAXX and Droid Mini I owned recently as well as the Moto X I have currently (but will be returning next week).
You'd think the guy posting all these leaks of new Motorola hardware would know how to operate 'em in the first place, geez.
Truth be told!
I'm going to assume the chip inside is not going to be Motorola's in-house SoC since Qualcomm has their own solution on the S800.
Touchless control is still included. Yay!

Nice ! So the Active Display will still available. I hope they put more functions and develop for more customization on it.
Very exciting stuff. I am very curious to see how much bigger it is next to a Moto X.
Looks good!
I don't think the size of the new one will be as big as the others with a similar size display. If you look at the current X, it's the smallest phone that has a display size of 4.7 inches. ALL other phones with the same display size are noticeably bigger.
5" 1080p AMOLED, SD card, snapdragon 800, and the active display/touchless moto x features. I'll buy it. (unless it launches at a stupid high price, then I'll wait 60 days for the price to cut in half)

The S800 does have a fully programmable DSP, but why go through all of the work again when they've already done the work with the TI DSPs?
It just makes more sense to keep the DSPs found in the Moto X and just upgrade those as they improve as well. TI provides better support to manufacturers anyways.

I'd trade the SD card for a better camera and aluminium body. The existing speaker is perfect.
I know for a fact Motorola will update their X8 system integrating it with a more up to date Snapdragon CPU (possibly based on 800 series).

New pic from tktechnews shows the phone about 1/3rd of an inch taller than the x.
Says they are working on sanding off the markings then more pics and videos coming.
Well it looks like I won't be buying the X+1. They show it being a Sharpie width taller, which is a lot taller in reality. I could handle a device that is a little wider, or even thicker. It's the tallness that bothers me, doesn't fit in my pocket well and is uncomfortable while sitting. I'm glad I have my Moto X however, it's such a good phone I don't really feel the need to upgrade. Maybe they will make a mini or something. Who knows.

Oh yeah, and there is also this little thing that I don't think anyone saw coming.
Replies to this thread should can involve thoughts, discussions and questions you guys may have about these new devices.
Enjoy!
images shamefully stolen from the Gizmodo articles.
My personal thoughts on each device:
The new X doesn't look great to me. That ring around the camera really turns me off and I don't know how I feel about the new leather backplate options.
As for the 360, I'll have to try one before I buy one. I've heard that it doesn't have the greatest battery life but other than that is supposed to be phenomenal.
The leather is an option which mean you don't have to select it if you don't like it. Unless you are part of Peta or your religion is against it, but I'm hoping it's some type of fake leather.
I'm a bit grumpy right now. I desperately want qi charging for the X and NFC for the G, it doesn't look like either will get them.
I rather get the N6 for Android L and qi charging in that case. But I can still sell my OnePlus to fund for the X.
I have no interest in wearing a watch whether analog or digital.

I was using a Galaxy 10.1 Tablet earlier today with the faux leather the S5 has and it was alright I guess. I just wasn't amazed.
Yes it's an option, but it's a premium option. I was saying that I don't know how I feel about it because who knows, it might be better than what's on the S5.
The leather comes from the Horween leather company, they work with bovine and equine hide. I personally don't like leather (real or faux) unless it servers a purpose, belt, shoes and coat. Back on topic though, I know what my neXt phone will be, I'd even go with the G over other flagships out there.

Tbh, bigger screen, stronger processor, leather/wood back cover, higher cam and stuff, they are useless for me.
Just one thing me want from the new moto X, is the customizable voice command trigger. Or they will bring that to old Moto X as well?
Contextual services got updated which brought drive and home mode to the G and E so that's a possibility.

After seeing how big the new x is I'm glad I got the og moto x for my wife. That would be to big for her plus it just cost me .95 cents at best buy. I think they went to big to fast 4.7 to 5.2 inch a big difference. I think the main issue that will turn off current moto x owners will be the size. Also is there no qi charger? If so that is a huge mistake as well. As far as aesthetics I don't think it looks that bad. However I do think the og x looks better.

The battery is by FAR the most disappointing feature.

Note 4 vs Droid Turbo

Since you can't write to SD now anyways...it doesn't matter to me. Anyone else ready to ditch Samsung? Good chance the boot loader on a new Motorola won't be totally locked down like our N4 is. It's a super Moto X basically.
I would miss the removable battery and S pen too much. Also I'm not crazy about the screen size of the turbo

I am looking to pickup either the Note 4 for Turbo for the wife. She doesn't need/want the S-Pen. She wants a phone that's fast, easy to use and provides great pics even in low lights. She doesn't know what she wants and is not a tech person at all lol. Which phone do you think will have the better camera?

I'll wait for reviews to make a final judgement, but there is a very low chance the turbos camera is better then the note 4. None of the moto devices are known for their camera. Even the new moto x is weak still in that department.

The bootlader on the droid turbo will be locked down tighter than fort Knox. So don't expect to be rooting or flashing Roms on it. I do like the form factor and the materials they use. I also like the specs they included. For me the only gripes I have is the camera, I heard it was OK.

Trust me, I'm coming from a original Moto X and ive had my fair share of droid brand devices. The bootloader is not unlocking any time soon. Maybe someone will find a root exploit but that's about it.

I think this one uses the same 21mp camera / sensor as the Z3

Why would they lock the boatloader down? Unlike Samsung, they aren't pitching phones to corporate America. Motorola's been fairly open recently with the Moto X too. Their forum already has a system dump waiting for Devs...

The only reason I could think of is to help promote the N6 as being the only unlocked and truly customizable stock phone on VZW. VZW could make them have it locked from factory as well. We will see on Thursday when it is released.
Picked this up from a recent link about the announcement of the turbo.

Shoot. Guess we'll see in 2 days. I have my N4 but nothing about it endears me like my old Note 2 did.

Exactly. The turbo is very enticing. If root doesn't happen in the next couple of days for the note 4. Then I will definitely get the turbo using my exchange period from Verizon.

I do like the screen size but that 3900mAH battery sounds good. I'd be set for days

The 3900 nah battery sounds nice but nothing beats being able to swap batteries. The spare battery charging system is like the greatest accessory ever

I suppose... I usually was OK getting home on 10%. I work outside and to truly not have to worry about batteries at all would be sweet. This phone does well but it negates the screen when I have to crank the brightness down to nothing to make it to 10% at the end of the day
The Note 4 is a great device, and the battery is pretty good. But I find myself having to adjust frequently to save battery life were I can. With the turbo I don't think that would be the case. Plus it charges incredibly fast.

Since you can't write to SD now anyways...it doesn't matter to me. Anyone else ready to ditch Samsung? Good chance the boot loader on a new Motorola won't be totally locked down like our N4 is. It's a super Moto X basically.

What do you mean "can't write on SD" ? You're talking about can't write anything onto external mirco SD card? I have a 32gb and everything works just fine...or maybe I'm not understanding you?

You can save pictures and stuff but my apps won't write to the SD.
I'm feeling the same, I'm still thinking about it

Be proud of your Moto X

I've been Moto x user for almost a year and I have no desire to upgrade. My work issued me another phone which is G3. Guess what? Moto X has some significant advantages over over that phone, even though it's considered high end device. G3 colors look dull and washed out, not to mention auto brightness feature doesn't work that well. Black color is much deeper and white color looks much better on Moto X. It dims the screen way too much indoors. Here are some interesting images. One is at 100%(bottom) another is on 0% (top) brightness. Images are taken using Panasonic mirrorless camera.
If you are thinking about upgrade, make sure you check out your next device in person.

My story is quite opposite.
I just got my moto x first gen four days ago and I'm in love.
I never quite found the phone that I could love until I used this phone.
I have owned M7,M8,S4,G2,Nexus 4&5, Moto G, Optimus G, and then from the Lumia line the 520/635/935.
I might have a problem....
The funny thing is this phone doesn't really do everything the best. It sits in the hand the best though.

I also love my moto x, but I've found some lacks:
-the device is slightly heavy considering his dimensions;
-the camera could be better;
-the device overheats easily;
so if the new moto x 2014 was not so big maybe I would have bought it
Only concern I have with my Moto X is the Whites are soo yellowish beyond acceptable... I completely hate that... Except for that it's awesome... The ways it sits at hand while calling is just so damn nice

I've noticed that too, but trust me it's far better than G3 or many other devices.

I took it apart once and it's very well built device, I would compromise grams for durability.
Camera is Ok I've taken some decent pictures with it. Most people don't realize that camera is just a tool and adjustments and conditions of picture taking is very important.
That;s the issue of all modern cellphones.
So Moto X users everywhere should be thrilled that you like the phone more than something else? Why should I care who likes what phone and how old said phone is? All that matters is what I like and can make work for me, not random people in the internet with unknown preferences and tastes.

I bought my XT1060 Dev edition off someone for 200 bucks to replace my Nokia 520. I'm on the AT&T network right now but I may switch to Verizon in the near future. It's good to have a phone that can run on both networks.
Moto X is the one
I've been using moto handsets for more than 18 years, I'm crazy about flashing ROMs, Moto X is the first handset which made me stop flashing ROMs, only the new CM12 I flashed it then back again to stock so quick.
I cannot live without the smartness of this phone, it's the smartest, dealing with me smartly and differently at home, car and when even touched or talked to.
My next will be definitely the new Moto X 2014.
This Moto series is incomparable.

It does not, what effects were you thinking? I am sure I could get it made...
I really really loved my Defy and Defy+s. Those were the only cellphones that resisted MY wear without breaking or scratching. It's a pity that Motorola discontinued the line (and their hardware is so outdated).
But the Moto X 1 is the best of its time, no questions asked.
