Kit Kat Issue Summary (Upgrading or Using on Droid Line)- Please add your issues - Droid Ultra General

A list of issues I've read about with KitKat.
Install
If you previously rooted like a monkey (you blindly followed instructions without understanding them), you will probably have issues upgrading - either a brick or an unrooted KitKat.
If you are on KitKat and not rooted, you have no option to root at the present time
Battery
Totally "by feel" but it seems a touch worse to me. No empirical data to back that up. tehcodeman feels his is slightly better.
Applications
Play Store would download 100% of any new app I was trying to install then get stuck. Force stopping store & clearing store cache fixed the issue
USB OTG no longer works. You can use third party apps like StickMount but they require root
Issues with Tap & Pay not working
stock mail client will not start if you swipe its notification up from active display since the KitKat update. See https://forums.motorola.com/posts/6c3888a792 . This is true for me using stock email client to MS Exchange Server.
[*]Phone won't send mms(pic/vid/group) when connected to wifi (Metfanant). I've read there is an issue with Hangouts + Kitkat and MMS on wifi (not droid specific). Some have said using default messenger works. I tested either.
Photo bucket does not work on ART. - Probably many more apps too as this is relatively new to developers.
Root
changing the SQLite db for tether no longer works - you now need to replace the entitlement apk
If you got to KitKat and didn't Slap it first and therefore have no root, you are SOL
Xposed does not work with ART - if you have it installed and try to switch to ART, the phone will reboot but you will still be dalvik.
Cant switch to ART from dalvik - doesn't take: Do you have Xposed installed? If so that's why.
Non-Root
I've read things like foxfi and other tether apps no longer work (except maybe via bluetooth)
Other
More issues (than with 4.2) with connectivity to non VZW carriers.
My Bluetooth connection to my car (VW) drops occasionally (it never did on 4.2). Not often enough to be super annoying but enough that sometimes I think I must be getting a call, email or some other notification. Comes back on its own about 5 seconds later.

BAH! I thought I was posting in Q&A forum - can a mod move it? unless it belongs here.

Almost good enough as a stickie!
fat-fingered and Maxx-ed out.

I don't see how any of those are issues with KitKat in the slightest. Maybe you mean "Limitations with KitKat"?
Also, my battery "feels" better than ever. I used it moderately at work today and had 80% charge at 5pm after unplugging it at 7 this morning.

Its meant to be a list of issues upgrading to, rooting, or applications on KitKat on the Droid Maxx/Ultra phones. If you don't see how the items posted are related to that....

The home key issue is the biggest annoyance for me. I was trying the Aviate launcher and it made it almost unusable.
Many people are reporting Bluetooth issues, particularly after the upgrade with existing devices. Sometimes unpairing and reestablishing the pair fixes the problem. I've done a factory reset and that seems to have fixed almost everything.
I concur about the battery. At best it is the same as before, but it's usually a bit worse - as much as an extra 1% per hour of drain compared with before. It was the same both before and after the factory reset that I did. It may have something to do with Google Play Services - I'm still waiting for the update. But I probably received the last, buggy update right around the time that I updated to KitKat last month. What's weird is that it isn't consistent - some days I end up with 40% battery, some days I end up with 60%, and usage is the same.
The only Play Store issues I've had came after the factory data reset - it took hours to reinstall all of my apps. Otherwise that's been rock-solid for me.

I noticed the Motorola Kit Kat build didn't include the Google Cloud Print app with native Android printing support. The app that's available from the play store doesn't work with the native print functionality, either. However, sideloading the Cloud Print apk pulled from a kit kat Nexus device does work.
It's disappointing that Kit Kat pulled USB OTG support. There are non-root apps like Total Commander+USB plugin or the Nexus Media Importer that can bring back partial support.

Biggest annoyance has been the home button double tap bug. Been playing with various xposed apps to try and override it, but so far not much luck. This needs to be fixed ASAP. I am currently rooted so everything else is fixable via xposed or 3rd party apps (tethering, blue status bar, etc). I've also had some random wakelocks that won't go away without a reboot (last one was the audioMix wakelock) but those aren't consistent so I can't really chalk that up to 4.4 as wakelock problems existed in 4.2.2. Otherwise 4.4 has been pretty good, and I especially like immersion mode (even with the hard buttons having a pulldown status bar is nice when you're running fullscreen games).

I don't use the stock email client - I just use Gmail - but I have read that the stock mail client will not start if you swipe its notification up from active display since the KitKat update. See https://forums.motorola.com/posts/6c3888a792

Yes. You do have a data connection other than wifi correct? MMS will not send over wifi
Maxx'd out Kit Kat

Settings>Battery>Battery Saver won't stay toggled on. Happened on my original and replacement device (not replaced for this particular issue)
Looks like 4.4.2 is coming to the MotoX soon so we shouldnt be far behind

[Q] Ugh, nothing but issues. Should I RMA?

I am having a huge variety of issues with my N10. I get somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-4 random crashes and reboots each day, which is a totally unacceptable level of stability for the types of tasks I intend to use it for. Worse, I have discovered that the Youtube app on this thing just plain doesn't work for videos over 2 minutes or so. As one of the primary uses I had intended for this tablet was watching online lectures on Youtube, this is again totally unacceptable.
I am running Paranoid Android (latest build) which I installed to try to mitigate some of these issues, but to no avail. Furthermore, my parents bought the tablet for me on launch day (Nov 13).
My multi-part question is: what should I try before I attempt to initiate RMA? Is is too late, even though I have only have my hands on the device for 2 1/2 weeks? What are Google's policies on rooting/unlocking (aka, what do I need to do before sending it back)?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Pretty sure you lost it (if that is you send it in rooted don't even call with out complete stock some one said Google could tell theirs was rooted)... But reload stock unroot and relock and you should be fine. Do not send in a rooted device to any manufacturer they don't like them. There are a few threads about the reboot issue take a look there are a few small things to prevent it.

I went back to stock,....
4.2.1, rooted, installed BusyBox, fixed permissions, and checked every app I wasn't using to make sure it wasn't synching or turning on my location by default. I made extra certain Chrome had all options disabled! I haven't had any problems of any type since.... :fingers-crossed:
Forgot to mention Naked Browser has taken the place of Chrome!

[Help] Package file is invalid error.

So I set up my Wifi only nexus 7 using a mobile hotspot from my phone and everything went okay. But when I got to my home network I was unable to download or update any apps from the play store as I kept getting an error about the package file being invalid. Trying all the trick I could find to fix this.(without using recovery)...
Removed Google account...
Cleared cache and data and uninstalled updates on Google play and framework.... Rebooted and still have the problem.
Anyone else having this problem?
Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm having the same issue. Started yesterday. I thought it was the update I was trying to do, but I'm getting it on my Nexus 7 and my GS4. I've tried everything you've tried, and it still isn't downloading the updates to Facebook Messenger or Instagram.
Im having this exact same issue with google apps on the playstore. Cleared cache and data from Google Play and was able to download a few updates but issue still persists. Yesterday my tablet was going crazy saying something to the effect of a UID mismatch and it would just keep looping between that and the boot logo. Reset to factory via TWRP and the error went away but the package file invalid persists. I had been getting various force closes with google framework, launcher...etc fresh out of the box without installing a thing. I really want to like this device but all these errors are making me regret giving my original nexus to my son.
I am having the same issue trying to download the Kindle app over wifi from the play store. I was thinking that I could take the app from my old tablet and then move it to the new tablet. Is there an easy way to do this? Both tablets are rooted.
Thanks, Dennis
I posted this in the thread I made but I have found two solutions to this problem.
1) Install tunnelbear vpn, make an account, and connect to US network.
2) Tether your phone's mobile connection to your tablet. However, I would only do this if you aren't worried about data limits or the app isn't that large.
These two methods have worked for me and I have tried just about everything else. Factory resets, changing DNS settings, clearing data, etc, etc. Nothing like this seems to work since it seems to be a problem on Google's end.
I had this issue but only with one app...
I tethered with my GS3 and it worked

I've tried every "fix" I've seen and nothing works for me: will likely have to wait for a fix from Google. In the meantime, the Amazon app store has many of the same applications and it is not having this issue.
EDIT:
Sideloading also seems unaffected.
I am having the same issue tons of apps not updating. Error 497 and package file is invalid. Also having issues on my Verizon Note 2 my brother on his S4 on Sprint. WTH is going on with Google.

Same issues here. Only thing I can do to get around it is tether to my phone. Driving me crazy. Hoping for a fix soon.
Having this issue for a lot of apps too. I've downloaded quite a few just fine but whenever I go looking for a new one I get this error for things like Google Play Books and Light Flow.
edit: I decided to turn on my phone's hotspot and connect to that instead of my apartment wifi, and it worked then. This is such a strange issue.
Tried both WiFi and my phones tether, no dice when updating hangouts or downloading certain apps. Ughhhh. Such a pain

I guess I should note that I tried other methods first, like clearing data/force stopping Google Play and Google framework services, and then restarting.

This has nothing to do with the nexus 7..

It's a PlayStore thing.
Have seen reports of devices of various types on everything from HC to 4.3 with the same issue.

Google Services Wakelock

Hello everyone,
I seem to be having a very annoying Google Services Wakelock on my Nexus 4 Device.
It is using more battery power than the screen, and keeps teh phone alive 100% of the time.
I'm on PA 3.97 - 4.2.2 Android.
Better Battery Stats tells me under Partial Wakelocks that SystemUpdateService Is keeping the phone alive, as well as under Kernel Wakelock PowerManagerService.
I'm wondering what I can do about this. Because it is really eating my battery life. Google tried to update to 4.3 over and over again, which wasn't possible because I was on a custom rom. So it kept redownloading it and I was forced to disable the update system (I don't exactly remember how I did it, but since I have root I disabled UpdateReciever under updates somehow).
I hope we can find a way to fix this.
Bump! Still need a solution

You're getting the wakelock because you disabled the update service.
The only solution is to either enable it , and lose data, or update to 4.3

We are literally talking about 20 000$ + of Data usage if I were to leave it on for a month.
Unless google wants to pay me that money every month I'd rather not have the update service on. Not to mentionhow much constant Data streams to download a file over and over again would drain teh battery.
Also, doesn't everyone with PA (3.97) who hasn't updated to 4.3 have this. I'm on a custom ROM so I shouldn't be forced to update to 4.3 anyways!
How come the battery is a wakelock when I entirely Disabled the service?
What other google services should I disable to make it stop entirely from even trying to update?

That thread is about another Google Services Wakelock that has to do with the GPS. I never had that location setting on.
Mine has to do with it trying to update, thus keepiçng the device on, although the update service is actually disabled(since it doesn't actually download data).
Does anyone know how to completely disable the google update service in every way possible since that is what keeps my wakelock on.
I have absolutely no issue like you, i`am on 4.3 stock with stock kernel and no continious syncing going on bro and the cpu going into deep sleep without issues. Try reflashing to stock to see if the issue still excists.

That's because the issue has to do with ParanoidAndroid having a bug that it picks up the Stock 4.3 updates, downloads them and then fails to install them. I am on a 4.2.2 ROM, 4.3 of course won't have that issue since that is what it is trying to download. Also I really just want to keep this version of Paranoid Android.
So what I tried doing was disable the Google update service entirely a few weeks ago. And it has stopped trying to download any updates.
However, the past few days that same Google Update (which should be completely disabled) is still keeping my phone a alive, although not downloading anything anymore. I just wnat a way to completely just permanently kill the Update Process.

Hi
To avoid this bug: don't pull out the charger or usb cable whit out to wake up the phone, be sure the screen is on when you pull out. If you pull out with screen off powermanagerservice.wakelock will keep your phone to never enter deep sleep.
A reboot also solves the problem
Think this bug is related to the wireless charger bug.

Ok, I guess that will already stop 1/2 wakelocks.
The other one has to do with the update service still keeping my device awake although it was disabled with disable service.
I think I was finally able to fix the issue!
I downloaded AutoRun Manager and disabled
com.android.gsf.update.SystemUpdateService$Reciever, which can be found under Google Services Framework,
I already had updates disabled using "Disable Service" app from Google Play Store, which did the job for stopping Data Usage, but there was still an idle process keeping the phone awake, which was the SystemUpdateServiceReciever.
I am on Paranoid Android and might want to Update to 4.3 due to them making continious new cool features which will only work for 4.3.
First off, I would like to ask if the update to 4.3 was worth the effort for you. It doesn't really seem to be a significant update on the side on the google dev team. Secondly, how would I go about doing it?
I am now on PA 3.69 - 4.22 which is one of the latest versions before the 4.3 update.
What do I need to do before I am able to flash 3.99 PA - 4.3? How do I avoid losing my appdata, my pictures and all that?
I paid for Titamiumbackup a few months ago but I don't really know how to use it and I'm a little scared to update to a different version number as I have never done that before, and I don't want to brick my phone.
What radios do I need to flash before being able to update to 4.3 based custom roms?

I'm on PA 3.99 with BaNkS GAPPS, which I highly recommend because of the size and stripped way they are. I think TitaniumBackup had some problems with PA and root, but I'm not sure if they already fixed those.
You need latest radio and bootloader to update, I think the easiest way to do this is to make a factory reset, full clean and wipe all data and then back to 4.2.2 stock ROM. Then update through OTA and you would have latest radio and bootloader. Install custom recovery and then flash latest PA.
I did it this way and I don't have any kind of problems.

Yes, exactly that. Disable service disabled. That stopped My data usage (luckily before the cap of My data plan, if I would have phone higher it would probably have costed me a few hundred dollars.).
The Google services drain remained and after about 10 hours of research I found I found out the receiver was still trying to download it, but didn't get access which caused a wake lock. In auto run manager search Google services framework and disable the googleupdatereciever and nothing else, keep everything disabled that is already disabled

Android 5.0.1 Changes

While there are several threads announcing the release of Android 5.0.1, in regard to the Nexus 6, most of them seem to be filled with posts relating to the availability, instructions for sideloading, etc.
This thread is to discuss the CHANGES that you have noticed between 5.0 and 5.0.1, and as this is the Nexus 6 section, it should really relate to changes on that device only. You may list changes you've personally noticed, or published changes, but please indicate the source. I, like many of you, no doubt, am very curious to see what is new, fixed, broken, etc.
http://aosp.changelog.to/aosp-LRX21V-LRX22C.html
On 5.0 I kept having the cloud print service or whatever keep crashing, on 5.0.1 I had the Amazon kindle app keep showing a notification Amazon kindle stopped for about 12 hours and had to reboot my phone. (Kept throwing the notification up about every 20 minutes on 5.0.1)
My phone has also been unable to chromecast netflix for the last week and I have to use my gf's nexus 6 to chromecast netflix. Weird little problems with applications on both operating systems.
Edit: Finally re-installed netflix and it fixed chromecasting.
It would be nice to see a list of changes (In language a typical person speaks rather than the jumbled mess that those AOSP changes look like)
I agree. Those AOSP changes are not that easy to understand. Also, they are just to the Android Operating System but doesn't the OTA also contain a new Modem and possibly other driver updates that would fix other issues with our phones? Those fixes and changes would not be in the AOSP list.
On a second note, why does Google do this? They obviously know whats changed. How hard is it to publish a simple list?
Is 5.0.1 fixing the slow text/multiple texts sent issue for Sprint users? People are getting my texts like 10 times quite frequently, I read somewhere that this version fixes that.

It doesn't.
Hell, I'm on AT&T and have the slow text issue. It'll stay stuck on "sending" for 3-4 minutes sometimes. Not sure if it sends multiple times or not, haven't had anyone complain to me that they got the same message several times.
I think I saw there is a new radio... Would be interested to know if signal reception is any better

On 5.0 I could not connect to my company’s Wi-Fi (it would show as ‘Saved’ but no connection).
On 5.0.1 I have no issues connecting to the same Wi-Fi.

sweet, thanks for letting me know that this works now.
digging in a little deeper

Work around AP misbehavior on EAPOL-Key descriptor version
It looks like some APs are incorrectly selecting descriptor version 3
(AES-128-CMAC) for EAPOL-Key frames when version 2 (HMAC-SHA1) was
expected to be used. This is likely triggered by an attempt to negotiate
PMF with SHA1-based AKM.
Since AES-128-CMAC is considered stronger than HMAC-SHA1, allow the
incorrect, but stronger, option to be used in these cases to avoid
interoperability issues with deployed APs.
This issue shows up with "WPA: CCMP is used, but EAPOL-Key descriptor
version (3) is not 2" in debug log. With the new workaround, this issue
is ignored and "WPA: Interoperability workaround: allow incorrect
(should have been HMAC-SHA1), but stronger (is AES-128-CMAC), descriptor
version to be used" is written to the log.

I'm seriously noticing my battery is better then it was yesterday before I flashed 5..0.1 I was roughly 34%, which was not really bad, after 12 hours of my normal use. Today, 50%, same time as yesterday. I will keep an eye on it, but thats what I'm seeing. Everything else seems about the same to me.
The issue with the face unlock camera is fixed.
5.0 is had huge problems in dim rooms buy now no issues

FWIW I'm on AT&T and have not had this happen to me even once.

Now that's more like it!
Not sure if it was 501 or the gplay music update, but my music sounds much more clear now. No more cloud print crashes.. Hoping my signal issue was fixed (sprint) but as im deployed right now i only use wifi.
Is anyone else having issues adding an exchange email account using the Gmail app? BTW, I flashed my phone to the stock 5.0.1 (LRX22C) version. After returning to complete stock I rooted and flashed TWRP but the issue was present before I made those changes.

Anybody else get a notice that background data is off?

Thus happens maybe mostly when I haven't used the phone for a little while. (I am not limiting background data of course)

Yes, I did just a few hours ago. When I opened the Play Store app today it told me that I had to enable back ground data for the app to work. So I went into settings and it was already enabled. I did this several times and the Play Store would not even load, just kept telling me to enable background data. I even restricted background data and then turned it back on to see if that would help and it didn't. I finally just did a reboot and that solved the problem.
Same issue here, is there a fix? Constantly happens and I can't update any apps when this occurs.
Yes, I've had the same thing happen on a random basis. No matter what options toggled, only a reboot works. Running the latest Cataclysm, but I really don't think it has anything to do with the ROM.
i have this issue too, i realized that killing the google play services did the trick, im rooted with xposed. install gravitybox and set 1 of the nav key to kill all background processes by long pressing it or double tapping.
hope this helps, cheers!
additional info: running stock rom with root
this problem was already present when i was using moto g(1st gen) and nexus 5 a year ago on lollipop. i always kill all background processes to go into the play store.

Yeah I'm thinking it has nothing to do with the rom as well. I am stock rooted. I was thinking about rolling back my play store version perhaps and see if that works out.
