Q: uninstalling TWRP without going back to stock completely? - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have an LG G2 D802 and already installed TWRP 2.6.3.4 for installing zip-files. But now there is an update (only browser, but 4.4 shouldn't be that far away), but without stock recovery it's impossible to install it I know the way how to get back to stock completely, but I don't want to go back to stock every time there is an update, installing all of them and then reinstall TWRP. I think on CWM the problem is the same, but i don't want to miss the camera tweak and splitwindow, so I need an custom recovery for the zip-files:crying: Is there any way to get the stock recovery back without installing complete stock or at least a possibility, to only "boot" the custom recovery when I'm back on stock, like on Nexus devices, and only use it for the flashing and then lose it on the next reboot?

You should be able to push stock recovery via adb or even flashify ( I prefer adb tho). What build number do you have?

I have D80210a-EUR-XX. But where can I find the stock recovery? And btw: what was the adb command for flashing? With my Nexus 4 I only used the ToolKit, because I was never able to use adb through the normal Win7 cmd, only through the toolkit...

most likely, but cannot confirm it, you ooen a stock kdz, and try flashing the kernel .img thats inside, I am not sure
anyone confirm it works that way
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda app-developers app

for all I know, the kernel doesn't contain any recovery... but I will test it tomorrow, when I downloaded the kdz if you could say me how to open a kdz-file.

here is a link to D802 recovery.img file i found, however its for the 10B build. you should be ok as i dont think the recovery has changed much from 10A to 10B, however i cannot confirm this. use this at your own risk, unless someone can confirm this will recovery will work.

If it's not working, I have a backup of the current. but I will test it tomorrow, then I have more time. But thanks for the quick answers.

Flashing the 10B recovery image worked well. But installing the update I only get an error so I go back to stock now.
I saw that flashify can flash zip files. Does it flash them itself or does it also need a custom recovery to flash them with it and flashify is only some sort of automtatisation? Then I could use this when I'm back on stock 10A (there seems to be no 10B for my device).

I've had similar problem, i think I just installed the KDZ file trough the way they showing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
It just erased the rooy and TWRP, and all of the apps and settings did not change, its like a repach.

at least it should be. but I can't take the last step. "By turning off, Holding down power and Vol Down until it comes up on the screen." doesn't works, there only starts the normal software, and that's the old one. And unpacking the kdz file with 7zip or Peazip also don't work. Peazip can do ist, but I have to find out how to let it extract it. After installing it, there is another file with the same name, but it's an .cab file with password. If I boot over widgetsoid into recovery (I think this is what the manual means) there is only a little droid with a read sign. How to get further?
EDIT: found out how to come into that menu. It wants to make a hard reset so I make an backup first.

Finally I was able to install the complete new software version (D80210e-EUR-XX) over the LG PC Suite. The file downloaded from the manual seemed to be corrupted or so as it only caused an unpacking error in the programm.
Does anybody knows a way how to flash a zip without a custom rom? Flash Gordon seems to not work.

THANK YOU, Sir.
Update:
Having trouble with Flashify. It doesn't see a recovery image, I guess. I tried putting the zip file, the extracted folder, AND the single file into Flashify's Recovery folder. No go. It doesn't see a file to flash for some reason. Am I doing something wrong?
Single file would be the way to go. No clue, have never actually used it. Just backed it up. Sorry. Maybe just may work for me. Shouldn't you be able to remove from a tot or extracted kdz bin?
Reverting to stock recovery in order to accept OTA updates ...
For anyone trying to apply any OTA updates, e.g., from Verizon, after modding your phone, restoring back to your previous version and wanting to go back to stock (for WHATEVER reason):
As you may have found out, trying to apply OTA updates with a custom recovery seemingly bricks your phone (it doesn't really, there are some nifty "dd" Linux commands you can use to get your phone to break out of the boot-loop it's stuck in).
Since I went back to my previously backed up stock ROM, I also wanted to revert to my stock recovery so that I could accept Verizon's OTA updates (if only because the popup reminders are annoying and a drain of the battery).
Here are the steps I followed, thanks to this thread:
- I downloaded the recovery.img from the link in Partager.info's post (#4) (choose the model subfolder which corresponds to your variant of the G2).
- I used "adb push" to copy the file from my computer to /sdcard (good to have on the sdcard partition as the rest get blown away when you flash a ROM)
- I installed "Flashify (for root users)" (found in the Play Store) on my phone
- I ran Flashify and chose the stock recovery file I downloaded which was in the /sdcard folder as expected (no need to put image files in specific folders; whatever works best for you)
- It flashed it in a blink of the eye and asked me to reboot; I did and it's worth mentioning I got the Android with the triangle (*clench*)
- I held the power button and forced it to shut down/reboot
- Upon reboot, I saw the Verizon boot animation (*unclench*)
- I checked for an update from Verizon and it prompted me to reboot and apply it; I clicked "Install now"
- It successfully rebooted and applied the update; what a relief to see the firmware update splash screen
Pfew. Thanks again, Partager.info and Steamer86.

[Q] Why is this so hard to install recovery!

Greetings,
First I'm sorry if this isn't the right thread for this, I'll gladly delete and change threads if need be.
Second, I just got an LG G2 (Verizon) today. It's great but I want more so I rooted it, confirmed that it's rooted. But that's all I can do. I can't install a recovery app on here to save my life. I tried downloading the VZW recovery img and pushing that with the loki_flash but I got two errors mainly.
Input file is not a valid loki image and Loki aboot does not match device. I'm trying to run either TWRP or CWM, anything really so I can flash a custom ROM on this bad boy.
If the image is not a valid loki image I'm assuming I don't have the right pair of files? (loki/recovery) and if the aboot image doesn't match the device I'm assuming that I don't have the right loki? Are these correct assumptions or am I making an ass out of just me???
My phone is rooted, ROM Manager says I have both TWRP AND CWM on my phone but if I try to boot into recovery via ROM Manager or adb I get a black screen and nothing more.
Does anyone have ANY insight at all into how I can go about the next step?

TWRP
Follow the install instructions for TWRP 2.6.3.2. Then after you've confirmed you can boot the OS from the recovery, place the 2.6.3.3 on the root of your SD. Reboot into recovery and flash 2.6.3.3. Reboot into recovery again and you'll be good to go.
Version 2.6.3.2 won't flash 4.4 ROMs but 2.6.3.3 will flash 4.2 (I'm assuming), 4.3, and 4.4.
Download FreeGee app from the play store and install TWRP recovery from it. It was the only way I could install it on my LG G2.

I followed many tutorials last night including this one.
(I am too new to post links in a message.) The link I was going to post was from howtorootmobiledotcom
I downloaded any version of TWRP I could, there were only 2, one img of each version and one zip. I used the loki from the zip that came with it as well but still no go.

I used RussGJohnson solution and it worked in a matter of seconds. Now I'm stuck though. I wiped everything and can boot into TWRP but I have no ability to sideload anything. I have all the latest LG drivers, even the lastest android sdk drivers, nothing is working. If I boot up normally the LG logo comes up and just sits there.
I can boot into recovery using the whole volume down + power button combo but then when I go to sideload my computer isn't seeing the device. I'm on a Win 8 machine using the stock cable. I've tried both USB 2 and 3 ports
It's done
Using RussGJohnson's suggestion worked great.
The issue I had with being unable to sideload a ROM wasn't resolved but I just used my Mac to do it instead. That worked just fine. Win8 couldn't recognize the device while in recovery. Go figure.
free gee very fast
Use Flashify u n00b.

I'd recommend flashify to flash recovery images. You can download it from the play store. So easy to make a typo and mess things up with adb and dd.
You could do it with a terminal or adb shell. Say you store the image in /sdcard
Code:
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p14
Verify mmcblk0p14 is recovery before you try this. I'm pretty sure that's right, but I don't have my tablet right now and you can make a serious mess of your device this way if you overwrite the wrong partition. Check it by listing your partitions with this:
Code:
su
ls -al /dev/block/platform/*/by-name
By default this little tablet does not have fastboot, but you can enable it with this method. I've zeroed out my laf partition and verified I can boot into fastboot mode, but I've never actually used it to flash anything. It just seemed like a good idea to have fastboot available to fall back on rather than LG download mode since there was no kdz available for the V410 for a long time.

Thank you! the thing is i bricked my g pad, i really dont know much about the tab because the lack of support it has. I was using it with cm12.1 and i use a stock recovery founded in Android central to revert back to stock, but in TWRP i flashed the img as recovery and also as boot, so the g pad entered in a bootloop were only enters in stock recovery, my Windows 10 laptop doesn't recognize the tab when in adb sideload, and doesn't know much about adb Shell, i'm following the comandas you wrote but i'm always getting error: closed.
i know how to get back to stock using the kdz, but using the kdz will make the partition issue and will have to folllow a looong looong process.
If you could give me a hand with this i would really apprecciate it
Sorry I've never encountered the adb closed problem myself, but I have heard about it before. Some people have reported the following series of commands fixes it:
Code:
adb usb
adb devices
adb kill-server
adb start-server
The first two commands normally don't really do anything and its pretty obvious what the second two do, but some people have reported success doing this.
Some people have reported the closed error was fixed by updating their adb binary. If you're using the android-sdk update platform-tools, or if you're using a standalone adb consider looking for an update for it.
Good luck. That procedure to get things back to normal following using the kdz to restore sounds messy.

I flashed stock rooted 4.4.2, and I want to OTA to Stock Lollipop, but it says there is no update. Any ideas of how I can get back to fully stock? Would flashing this stock recovery make it work? Is being rooted blocking the OTA update from seeing an available update?

If you applied an OTA with a custom recovery installed it might soft brick your tablet, but I don't see why that would stop it from detecting and downloading the update. It is always safest to flash stock recovery, fully unroot, and undo any modifications you've made to /system before taking an OTA, but some devices are more picky than others. With what you're describing I'm afraid that even if you do unroot and flash stock recovery your tablet still won't find the OTA.
Do you have a nandroid backup of an unmodified stock ROM you could restore?
And just so you know that lollipop bootloader is not vulnerable to the bump exploit, so no custom recovery or ROMs if you get it to apply.
Whenever I type "reboot recovery" in terminal emulator, it boots straight to factory reset. I have tried this multiple times with both dd and flashify. Do you know what causes this? I'm downloading the OTA right now, I hope it doesn't wipe then too...

Marshmallow and root

Hey. I had rooted 5.1.1 Moto X Style and did a return to stock 5.1.1. eu version (relocked bootloader). After booted up, I received update to Marshmallow, I installed it. It worked. Later I wanted to root it, so I unlocked bootloader again and also did flash custom recovery - TWRP (twrp-2.8.7.1-clark). Later I restarted device and its was stuck on logo of Motorola. Nothing boots up.
Cant find solution for this. Thanks.
UPDATE:
Solved my issue here.
UPDATE2:
If there is problems upgrading your device to Marshmallow, I would suggest install custom ROM TruPureXMM with custom KERNEL Frankenclark. I am using this combo for long period of time and now I can suggest to others too!
Mine is having a similar issue. Mine took forever to boot at your stage because it formatted itself. Once I flashed SuperSU is where mine refused to boot. I have no idea what's going on either.
I am having the exact same issue. I updated to Marshmallow, installed TWRP (twrp-2.8.7.1-clark), flashed SuperSU and the phone hung on the Motorolla Logo at boot. I was still able to access the boot loader (holidng down the volume and the power button) and attempted to restore using http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...ndows-tool-moto-x-style-pure-edition-t3199905. I was able to restore however now my wifi does not work and therefore I cannot update to Marshmallow OTA.

You need to reflash the LP radio from the restore all file ( NON-HLOS.bin ). That should do it.
I'm having the exact same issue. I'm so glad you posted. I gave up and used the restore-to-stock tool as well, but my Wi-Fi isn't working either. What is LP radio and how do I flash it? Now that I've restored to stock, I no longer have TWRP, and because I don't have WiFi, I can't update to Marshmallow.

If you want WIFI on stock 5.1.1 you need to flash right modem for you.
You should download .zip file that contains all stock files, unzip it, and find "NON-HLOS.bin", thats modem file that you need.
Now boot into fastboot mode (power+volume down), and from PC use "fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin"
Restart device, you should be okey now.
For XT1572 "STYLE" EU you can download this file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3gPYUZ4nRLwTUU4cUVmcUtBTEU/view;
But for XT1575 "PURE" US use this file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3gPYUZ4nRLwTl9Wd1JQX0hFejg/view.

Looks like you flashed SuperSU but didn't flash the boot_root.img , or you can use the systemless root.

Terrific! It actually worked! Thank you.
Did you find a solution for it being stuck at Motorola logo? I was also stuck on that after installing TWRP.

Nop, could find solution, so I did full wipe, and restored my backup file with 5.1.1. Also flashed stock logo, boot and modem, so it can boot my old 5.1.1. Moto.
Will wait for some kind of european ROM with Marshmallow, or TWRP update. Maybe later will try again to go fully stock and upgrade to Marshmallow, maybe will find something that will work, right now I just need my "phone" back so I can use it as daily driver.
I just finished flashing TruPureXMM. I'm in the middle of restoring all my apps, and I still need to re-fix the WiFi, but otherwise my experience is working well. You might want to check that out.

For wifi you should flash modem from his thread: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24269982087017262
Its Pure modem with band 12 fix.
I was using his Rom for some hours and didnt like it, my personal opinion:
Good: easy to install; twrp, supersu, xposed is working.
Bad: modified kernel (had more problems with it, it was draining battery so fast - 4 little cores was always online for ~900-1440MHz, and 1 big core always online for same frequancy as little cores, only one big core was going idle), so I didnt like all this modifications to stock kernel, also I didnt like that mine EU version now is listed as US version XT1575, and last that I noticed after some hours of usage is that on secret menu, mine 3G network was listed as WCDMA, but on EU of mine Style same 3G is using GSM auto method. I suppose that there can be some difficulties in EU countries - after changing settings to 4G, I loosed signal, and only after restart I got it back.
Thats the main reasons why I want european rom, or to modifie stock eu MM with xposed.

I think in that case I did flash SuperSU the old way for Stock Moto Marshmallow. I then did a TWRP backup to go back to full stock and tried rooting using systemless, but something isn't right. It's showing up, apps are asking for permission, but its acting odd. The apps can't get permission and Viper for example just crashes and other apps just keep saying something is wrong. My TWRP is messed up to. It was pushed correctly, but it seems very unstable. I can't flash any ROMs and if I plug it into my computer to send a file, when I reboot it no longer shows it in my directory to install. Sometimes if I hit reboot device, it only reboots recovery or just ignores the command entirely. I think I will revert it back to moto standard and try again, but this has been a little weird.

For XT1572 "STYLE" EU you can download this file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3gPYUZ4nRLwTUU4cUVmcUtBTEU/view;
But for XT1575 "PURE" US use this file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3gPYUZ4nRLwTl9Wd1JQX0hFejg/view.
If you are using other device, use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/firmware-moto-x-style-pure-stock-t3272486 to find your device, but this threads links are very slow.

fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
Where and how do I type this? I have everything else done.
Hi,
I followed this instructions and I have two problems:
It only boots using flashboot boot boot.img (in fact I can't do the fastboot reboot-bootloader command because the previous command just boots the phone)
There's no wifi, I tried flashing the modem linked before but I think that's for 5.1.1 so it didn't work

For this you need adb files on your PC.
You should read this thread, for how to get this files on your PC.
Then:
Basically, open terminal within adb driver folder, connect phone via USB to PC with USB Debugging ON, and you are ready to go - boot your phone into fastboot mode (shut down phone first, and then power+volume down) and now your are ready to use this command: fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin, but remember to put this "NON-HLOS.bin" file into folder where you opened terminal from.
But if you experience problems, I suggest just install TruPureXMM ROM. It whould be much easier!
Good luck!

Hello!
Have you read my other thread?
I have explained all my steps there, my device is Moto X Style (XT1572).
But I can suggest also use TruPureXMM ROM. Right now I am using this rom for about month, you could try it!
Good luck!
No luck with reflashing NON-HLOS.bin
I tried systemless root on my moto x pure marshamallow. Now the wifi is not working at all. I tried reflashing the NON-HLOS.bin but no luck there. Is there any way to solve this issue? Or should i revert back to lollipop seems like it is working just fine for others on lollipop.

New update to fix voLTE 911 bug...

So this morning I got an update to fix the voLTE bug. I'm unlocked with twrp installed and rooted. Just for the sake of experimenting I tried installing it. Well that didn't work. Just gets stuck in twrp recovery and you have to power the phone off completely to get it to boot. I guess my question (even though it's a little early) is there a way to install the update without reverting back to stock?
EDIT: Link to the zip

I don't believe so.
In the past you either had to go back to stock or wait on someone to create a compatible update for rooted devices.
Can you post link to zip?
If you are rooted, you can find the zip in cache folder in recovery.
Can you add what variant and build you are using before the update? Also the build afterwards?

I got the update, but all I see on my magisk rooted G5+ in /cache/recovery are log files and the fstab files. Anywhere else to look?

Yeah I can't find anything in that folder either.
I received the update and applied it. I am not rooted.
I have the XT1687 model.
My current build number is NPN25.137-35
My device BL unlocked, TWRP installed and rooted with magisck.
I'm getting the update notification and splash screens several times daily.
Anyone rooted try installing the update with Flashfire app?

If you have systemless supersu, you should just be able to apply the update after reverting to stock recovery.
So I found where the zip downloads. I wonder what flashing it in twrp would do?
EDIT: Here's the link to the zip and I've put it in the OP.

OK, so I tried flashing recovery.img from stock firmware build 33. But the OTA update will not install, instead I get an error after downloading and rebooting (red triangle at recovery mode).
So I tried fully reverting to stock firmware but I decided to skip over erasing userdata. Afterward the OTA downloaded and installed successfully. Keeping userdata does not seem to have caused an issue.
My problem now though is how to get root back without having to wipe userdata after re-flashing TWRP.
Or is this not possible and if I want to root I must first wipe userdata so that TWRP can read internal memory?

Just tried flashing it with TWRP and no luck:
Verifying current system....
E3002: Package expects build thumbprint of 7.0/NPN25.137-35/37:user/release-keys or 7.0/NPN25.137-33/35:user/release-keys; this device has .
Updated process ended with ERROR: 7
which doesn't make much sense since I rooted the stock ROM (Build number reads NPN25.137-33).
If your using a custom recovery flash the stock recovery, then go to the stock recovery and using your computer flash using adb sideboard command. I assume you already know how to do this. Hope that helps.

I'm stuck in the same boat... no idea how to flash the stock recovery and sideboard, what that even means, or if that would break root. I just followed the step-by-step "how to root" video when I first got the phone
There's a workaround to disable the "advanced LTE" or whatever it was called, so I did that. But in the meantime until a more "user friendly" means of updating is available, is there a way I can get rid of this nag screen? Way back on an earlier device (Samsung Charge?) I remember manually editing a "build.prop" file or something to match the latest version so I wouldn't keep getting the software update nag. Is there something that will do the same here, or is there a system app I can freeze in TiB?
My best guess is freezing "Moto Actions 03.022.1.4-N" because it's showing "(updated)" on the side.

What he means is you need to download the stock rom, unzip it, then boot phone to bootloader mode and connect to PC. Then flash the recovery.IMG from the stock rom folder with command prompt:
Fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Then you can on the phone tell it to boot to recovery mode. This will be a screen with Android on his back and the words NO Command on the bottom. Then plug to PC and use adb command to sideload the update zip like this:
adb sideload [nameofupdatefile].Zip

Strange, reflashed the stock recovery and adb can't see it (adb devices returns nothing). And when trying to install it via the normal OTA way, the stock recovery tries to install but ends with an error.
That's what happened to me when I tried reverting to stock recovery and then trying to install update from phone Settings app.
I ended up having to revert to stock rom to get ota to apply with settings app. But now I am trying to root again but after installing TWRP data is encrypted again. So looks like I will have to wipe data before re-rooting.
