The Moto G Battery Life Tips & Tricks Thread - Moto G General

***MOTO G BATTERY TIPS & TRICKS THREAD***
Hello fellow Moto G users! As we all know, our shiny new phones get great battery life right out of the box... but a little more is always better, right? The purpose of this thread is to share bits of knowledge on how to squeeze the most juice out of our batteries. Feel free to post any personal tips you may have, or correcct anything that may not be accurate. What works for one might not work for another, so let's see what we can come up with I'll start...
P.S. please do not post your battery usage screenshots here, there is already a thread for that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2538691
- Mobile data can be a huge battery drain, specifically 3G/4G. Use wifi when possible, and also if you know you are not going to be using your phone for a while (e.g. at work), set your preferred network to 2G. The long way to do it is Settings>More>Mobile Networks>Network Mode. There are apps in the play store that can create a shortcut to the network settings, or if you are using Xposed you can usually put a toggle for it in your quicksettings for ease of access.
- Screen brightness will always be one of your biggest battery drains. I personally turn off auto brightness and manually set my brightness slider to as low as comfortably possible for best results.
- Apps can run in the background without you even knowing, hogging up memory and battery. Disabling the ones you dont need can help big time. Go to settings> apps and slide all the way to the left to the All category, select the unwanted app and hit Disable. You can re-enable these apps anytime also. My suggestions would be to disable the Moto apps - Assist, Migrate, and Help, and also any of the Google apps you dont use such as Magazines, Newsstand, Movies, etc.
- Uninstall unnecessary apps. Even though you may barely use them, they could still be running in the background by themselves.
- Use a lightweight launcher, such as the stock launcher, Nova, Apex or G.E.L. Heavier launchers such as Go Launcher, Themer, Next Launcher 3D use a lot more RAM and can slow down your phone + drain battery.
- If you don't use any of the special functions of Google Now, turn it off. You will still be able to use the Google search, but without the massive battery drain that comes along with the Now functions.
- Greenify can help with some apps that constantly run in the background like Maps or Facebook, basically it freezes the app when you're not using it. You must be rooted to use Greenify though. *Note: Greenify only lets you freeze downloaded apps, so if you want to freeze a system app, for example Google Maps, use Titanium Backup to uninstall the app, then reinstall the app from the playstore. Problem solved:good:
- Check your sync settings to make sure you're not syncing stuff you dont need. Go to settings>Accounts and tap Google, then tap your account name. Uncheck any of the services you dont use, for example Books, or Photos, or Google+. Do the same for anything else in you Accounts section.
- Location: Go to Settings>Location>Mode and make sure its on Battery Saving. Simple enough.
- Turn off Bluetooth and Wifi when you're not using them.
- Turn off Location Reporting in Facebook AND Facebook Messenger. In fact if you don't absolutely need it, delete the Facebook Messenger app altogether. The Facebook app will still give you your message notifications just fine without it.
- Custom kernels are well known to give better battery life, but usually need to be tuned/adjusted to fit individual needs. Such adjustments include underclocking your CPU/GPU, changing governors, undervolting, and limiting cores. If all of this sounds new to you I suggest you start reading the kernel threads in one of the Development sections.
Well that's all I can think of for now, if I think of anything else I'll add it. Feel free to add any other tips:good::laugh:

also, if you don't need to be on your phone while sleeping, use airplane mode.
Sent from my XT1032 using xda app-developers app

And also, to get maximum battery life possible, simply keep your phone turned off.
p.s. couldn't resist the temptation to make some fun. good suggestions though...
Sent from my XT1034 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Greenify - tho' it requires root, probably the best concept in battery saving apps - and with the pro version you can keep the notification from applications that are using GCM and are hibernated/suspended from running in background.

Great tips. Thank you

I use Tasker to automate some of my battery saving scenarios. At home and at work I disable the mobile data and turn on the wifi, and I do the opposite when I'm somewhere else. I use my home / workplace wifi signal to switch between locations, I find it way more accurate than cell tower positioning with minimal power usage. (Android 4.3 can scan the wireless networks even with turned off wlan.) I'm currently not rooted ,but with rooted phones and some plugins you can also switch between 2G and 3G or put the phone to airplane mode during night all automatic, set it once and forget it
Tasker is a paid app with a lot of fancy functions but for simpler automation tasks there is a free app called Llama.

Heat can reduce battery capacity. This affects all types of devices. Moto G will heat up when running multiple applications. Cold temperatures also reduce battery life

Is this a reply to my post or just a statement in general? Your phone will be neither hot nor cold from Tasker itself. (Sorry, could not resist.)

The battery life of the Moto G seems to be pretty good even without changing anything. Lasts well through a day, 6am till 10pm.
Stopped using greenify at the moment, not noticing any major differences.

is there a definitive list as to what motorola services can be disabled?
The OP mentions some but there a whole heap more.

Skype drains it all
Guys if you don't use Skype uninstall it..
It consumes a hell lot of battery by running in the background

Switch off the phone...
By this way the battery can last a year or two...
seriously guys stop worrying about battery, this phone has better backup than most other phones..
if thats not still enough for your usage patterns.. carry a charger or a power bank

I don't understand. The computer program made a bad translation. Do you know a person who can translate your message? If not, please give us the message in the original language. Maybe someone here can speak your language or find someone who can.
What language do you speak? Is it Brazillian Portuguese?

Thank you for rewriting it. Google gives a much better translation now. I can understand it now!
Here is the new translation from Google:
I have the Moto G Dual Colors less than a year, he is KitaKat with Android 4.4.4 without root,
I noticed walking heating up too much and give pops a blue part down the middle on the right edge of the notification bar.
I already reduces glare, took several apps, downloaded apps for battery but nothing worked and I'm afraid to take the technical assistance.
Should be updating the KitKat or some app do not know, and even when I use the Play Store the phone gets very hot at this time ... but the blue part of the screen appears in 5 minutes of use the phone even without heat.
I find this very strange, I know what it is and how to solve it.

Also, I know someone who speaks Brazillian Portuguese and American English. She is very busy with her job and she doesn't know a lot about computers, but maybe she can help translate.

Doesn't consume battery when you log off and I suggest to set it up so you know when Skype is actually working in the notification bar (same goes for viber and other IM apps).

Have anyone seen any side effect of power bank on Moto G battery?
i just bought a xiaomi power bank 10400mah, output is 2.1A, instead of regular chargers 0.550A.
So just need to know, it should be used or not with Moto G..

[Q] Is this a hardware or software issues?

Hello All,
I have purchase a A500 from walmart.com. It only work for about 2 days then it lock up, screen became unresponsive. I had tried to boot to recovery but it came up with the android on it back with a red triangle with !. Called warranty support, send it in to be fix, took 5 days there and 5 days back. So now it has been running good until this past Friday about 30 days. It is under 90 day warrantly at the moment but I did buy a 2 year exented warranty.
Problems I have noticed:
1) Act like it has a mind of it own. It has open up my calendar and added events to it. It has open setting and review them. Move from one screen/workspace to another. Rearrange my home screen, move picture to another workspace and move the clock.
2) Screen at time become unresponsive.
3) Noticed the following it the log;

Question I am wondering is that is this a software or hardware problem?
It is currently running ICS 4.0.3.
Wondering If I should reload Honeycomb 3.2 on it?
If it hardware it is under warranty and will go back for replacement this time. I also have logs available just ask me.
Really wonder what I should do? Send in for replacement or reload android version?
Thank You,
RDSweb
It's a software issue. Also seems like a sync issue with your calendar. I have the same. Was sync'd with my wifes phone at one time, deleted the account off her phone, added her own account, but I still can't get this one old entry of hers from replicating itself on my calendar! Delete, resync with my devices, and still creates itself.
As with your other issues, might be a "rogue" app causing it. You download any strange apps lately from the market (Play Store), or installed any non-play store apps? Like launchers or widgets?

Speedup for Moto E 2nd Gen - ro.config.low_ram=true

Just for kicks I thought I would check and see what would happen if I added ro.config.low_ram=true to my build.prop. Before doing this, I had about 250MB of free ram reported in Settings / Apps / Running. Afterwards I have about 375MB of free ram, mostly from a reduction in system memory usage. You do lose some transparency and animation effects, but the phone seems to be much faster now, especially when switching between Apps. I have an xt1527 Moto E 2nd Gen LTE running stock 5.1 with the squid kernel r6.
Instructions:
** Root is required **
Using a root file explorer edit the build.prop file located at /system
Add the line ro.config.low_ram=true
Save the change and reboot

I'm surprised you never got a reply to this post. How did this tweak work out in the long run? I'm thinking of applying it to my own Moto E 2015. Thanks!
Isn't it making lockscreen solid black and notification background black too? I'm using this on my tablet with 4.4.4 too but when I tried it on 5.0 it was pretty strange. BTW it's good to disable animations too because this tweak can make them less smooth.

Ha ha, I figured nobody cared since there were never any replies!
It seems like many of the Google apps will recognize this setting, so it can help somewhat if you are running the stock rom with all of the Google apps that come with it. You do give up some graphical effects; the biggest for me was the tab previews in Chrome. I'm running CM13 now and I haven't tried it yet with that, but I only have a few Google apps installed so I don't know if it would help much.

We care we care!
I've also gone the CM13 route with my Moto.. and I find it mostly smooth. I should probably update with a more recent nightly.
Though I was wondering about the ram tweak for my Blu Studio 7.0 LTE phone.. also running a Snapdragon 410 and only 1gb ram and on Lollipop. It stutters here and there.
Did you find/learn any other tweaks for 410s?
Hi, i'll test on my moto e 2gen (Otus) and pos the results here!

Not really, other than setting some apps to not load at startup, and using Titanium backup to freeze others that I only use on occasion. This is not really SD410 specific, but more for devices with only 1GB of RAM.
exactly as spiked_mistborn says, it's the issue with 1gb of ram. SD410 with 2gb of ram (even with 1,5 gb) can really fly, my sister has phone with this configuration and it's way faster than my moto e. Just keep your ram usage low but no with "ram cleaners", just uninstall apps that have big background processes (like facebook ect). Check ram stats and you will know what to uninstall. If you're real hardcore you can try using rom without gapps, with micro-g and some alternative app store.
and one more thing
because we have 5.0-6.0 android that is less ram efficient than 4.4.4 (imo) moto decided to enable zram and it makes this phone slower, old moto g on 4.4.4 doesn't have zram enabled and it's faster.
you said add the line.. but where in prop??

Disable system apps

Hello,I´ve been disabling apps on my Samsung Galaxy A5,to try to improve the performance of the device and improving the duration of the battery, and I had found some system apps that I`m not very sure about if there are safe to disable, I`m not root and I have Android 5.0.2 and I use Nova Launcher. The apps that I don´t know if they´re safe to disable are:
Setup Wizard ("Asistente de configuracion" in Spanish)
ColEUKor
RoseEUKor
ChocoEUKor
com.android.providers.partn.
Sound Alive
ANT Radio Service
com.sec.agif_maker
EmergencyProvider
post_t_promo
ant+ plugins service
tour virutal
com.sec.android.ofviewer
com.samsung.android.visual
agent market comments (agente comentarios market in spanish)
Thanks and sorry for my English!

Custom rom dev wanted, sc9583 and px6, paid project, theming/ui experience a plus

As the post states, I'm looking for someone who can do custom Rom development and theming to development 3 or 4 custom roms (starting with SC9583, adding px6 and a mirror in tandem). This will be for vertical and horizontal units. We are focusing on specific platforms (similar to linkswell), primarily high end (gtr, 911, r8, gallardo). So the themes and aesthetics should match the cars as well as the cost of the cars .
Ideally, in addition to custom rom experience, the right person has light UI and Android app dev experience (Java, Smali would be nice).
We are currently selling radios and mirrors that are running lightly modified roms on them (it's not my strength). I was going to do this over time but i'm getting to busy to handle it.
We are looking for someone to help us:
• Improve each stock firmware by (including but not limited to):
o Modifying build.prop values for performance
o Improving the UI by modifying images, font, and text color/size
o Creating additional themes
o Adding OTA updates
o Adding our preselected APK packages
o Pre configuring our launcher to have a default layout
o Add function for user to change Boot animation and theme options
• There may also be a place for app dev involving canbus functions
Any help finding the right person is appreciated, thanks

Android 11 für Mi Max 3

Hello my dears !!!
Just wanted to let you know that Android 11 roms are already available for the Max3.
Link to this: https://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?showtopic=941051&st=5180#entry100512146
Personally, I can recommend the ExtendedUi 2.0 - Android 11- GSI MOD from SpyderMahn.
With the exception of Netflix everything works for me, it has been running for 4 days now, in my opinion absolutely suitable for everyday use
Support for FM radio?
Enviado desde mi MI MAX 3 mediante Tapatalk
I can't tell you, never use that, just use DAB + app to listen to the radio
So Netflix and Disney + are now working too.
Install

How does the battery life of this compare to MIUI?
I can't answer in general, but I get an average of 38-40 hours under Android 11 (Android 10 26-30 hours).
Ich persönlich empfehle
Überlegenes OS Excalibur A11 GSI von Spydermahn oder ExtendedUi 2.0 - Android 11- GSI MOD von SpyderMahn
because the other Roms caused one or the other problems and they are going absolutely great for me.
Small tip on the edge after setting up the Roms in Settings? Apps? Standard set the Dialer of your choice, as this is not always done automatically during the initial setup
I have installed first 2. It is coming up with Hardware issues at bootup. Back to Android 10.
@rudiratlos57
Does bothe OS got screen gestures, so i dont need the navbor on the buttom? Whats better, Superior OS oder ExtendedUI?
(Haben beide OS die Bildschirmgesten, damit ich die Navbar unten nicht nutzen muss? Welches OS findest du ist besser, Superior oder ExtendedUI?)
Definitely ExtendedUi
Runs more stable, more fluid and battery consumption is simply awesome.
Pures Standby 0.3-0.4% per hour, otherwise I can easily get 2-2.5 days per battery charge
.
But I can only report on my experience
And yes, gestures are standard after installation, if you prefer to use Navbar, you must first activate this in the settings

Thanks. Then i will try ExtendedUI very soon.
I tried several Android 11 GSIs for Mi Max 3:
Superior OS Excalibur A11 GSI by Spydermahn
ArrowOS - Android 11- GSI MOD by SpyderMahn
ExtendedUi 2.0 - Android 11- GSI MOD by SpyderMahn
Octavi Os- 1.0
MSM Extended
My recommendation: eXtendeUI or Octavi.
On MSM Extended there was a problem with installing Google Apps.
I tried several of these ROMs.... And all are good. It is matter of taste who likes what.
I use ROM ArrowOS (simple and clean, comes with gapps and kernel) and firmware fw_MIMAX3Global_V12.0.1.0.QEDMIXM_83ae0d72cd_10.0
Works flawlessly and very stabile, fast and long battery life even with stock kernel
Here some tips:
0. Use twrp or OrangeFox 10 (NOT 10.1 which is messy)
1. To make Phone app working (and phone ringing when you receive call!), set the Phone app as default 'phone app' in Settings
2. I use DMGC_7.3.020_ver.4.5 camera and it works fine, even without any custom config
3. Android Auto to work, must be installed as 'priv-app' (Google to find how to do it if you are not familiar)

That is still Rusky web site!
Hi
I´m testing now ExtendedUI 2.0 on my max3, honestly with the last official update of Miui 12 my phone started some lag on animations, opening apps. I feel most responsive ExtendedUI, i can´t get working audio settings for call, also has a menu for miui extras (you can select audio config presets for the type of headphones you have) but some of these specially audio not work. Overall, is very responsive, battery improve a lot, i'll keep it testing for a month to see what happens.

Agreed. Just installed the same ROM on my Mi Max 3 and it's WAY faster and smoother than Xiaomi.eu's MIUI 12 was. My Mi Max 3 is now my back up phone but I wouldn't have a problem with using this if it stays this smooth. Will have to keep using it for a while to see if I can find any bugs, but so far I haven't seen any.
Sorry if this is a duplicate question. I have Mi Max 3, but recent update has my play services useless and I can't install them even after I reset. So here I am looking to install an android that is not MIUI and would behave more like android and allow me to use all my Google services for my kids school.
Appreciate if someone can help me give a step by step guide for the installation.
