i have a great idea for an app to scan your titanium backup folder, and create an update.zip to restore all apps and data after a rom flash.
i have all the details worked out!
i know how to convert the tibu backups to useable restoreable data!
though its not hard.
this could easily be done through a script on pc or possibly through an app.
but i am just not a programmer, in either regard.
need experience with:
creating cwm 2 and 3 flashable zips (edify and scriptify)
possibly other scripting for editing install directory
unpacking tar zip and gz files
creating UI would be nice as well for whichever platform it ends up on pc or app

As far as I know, each Titanium backup has 3 files - one bzip2 for the APK, one for the data, and a "properties" file, which containt the market link, app install location, backup date etc...
I think it is possible to write an extention to ClockworkMod/Amon-Ra for restoring Titanium backups. Don't count on me to do it, I don't have any experience with the Linux kernel/Android custom recoveries.
As for a desktop/dalvik application, it should be very simple to pack the backup into a flashable .zip, I'll try to do such an app soon.

The paid version of the app will do this for you. Also let's you decide whether the. Zip is signed or not. Hope this helps.

Kick me while I'm down, I thought the Pro Version did that as well. The file it makes certainly looks big enough. I haven't taken a look at it. But my question is how is the update.zip, which I can't get to install, different from just reinstalling the .apks, which is how I get it working in the first place?

Good idea but I think you will run into problems if you restore from recovery... I don't think app ID's (and therefore permissions) will be correct and I don't think the apps will re-link to the market (if the id's aren't correct).
Running the fix permissions script after the restore might solve this.
But, other than selective restore, what benefit would this method have over say simply restoring the /data partition part of your nandroid backup?
Nevertheless, if you need help with updater-scripts send me a PM. If my concerns are unfounded then this is a worthwhile idea.
Need some help here:
I need to delete some of the backups I made with CWM recovery. I already have them backed up onto my PC, but need to delete them to make some room. For some reason I cant.
Ive tried root explorer, es file explorer, and my PC. Im unable to change the permissions of the files, and if you look at the pics I attached youll see they have some strange permissions, but I cant change them.
I am able to move the files anywhere else in the sd card folder, rename them, but no matter what I cant delete them. And when I try from my PC it shows them disappear, but they are actually still there.
If there is a way to format the sd card folder I will, but thats not an option in the settings, or CWM. Can someone please help me out here? This is really frustrating me. Thanks

I posted this in the other thread, but figured I would do so here in case other people needed the "fix".
Ok, so some good news and some bad news.
The good news is, I was able to put together a flashable zip that WILL DELETE the entire CWM backup directory from the sdcard. It is available here:

You simply need to flash it via CWM. Easy peasy. I confirmed that the directory/files were all removed, AND the storage space is now available for other files (I checked df before and after).
The bad news is, before attempting to delete the directory, I first tried changing the permissions (recursively) to see if that was a better "fix" for this problem. Unfortunately, even with the directory 777 and the files 666, I still could not manually delete them through the system. Which means, whatever bug is causing this problem is much more severe than a file/directory permission thing.
In any case, until the CWM developer can figure out a way to fix this bug, at least we have a way to manually remove the backups and get our storage space back.
The script in the zip is very simple. It just does a recursive delete on /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup.

can someone please explain to me why, since updating to 4.2, I have what looks like a duplicate of my SD card contents in a sub folder called storage/emulated/0/?
all my gallery apps, Gallery, DroidIris etc. see duplicates of all my pictures now?
And If I save a pic from a browser It points to the folders in storage/emulated/0/, not the SD card ones?
deleting any file in one folder effects the other, so it is probably not a true duplicate thats taking up space is it?
I assume this has to do with the multi user addition to 4.2, but I have not set up a second user at all.
Does this just occur to people upgrading, or to people who installed a fresh version as well?

I think this has been added as part of the multi-user feature and is where the data/content is stored for other users. It has been mentioned on the forum somewhere else, cant remember where I seen it though.
I also wondered this but then thought logically.
Two users using the same SD card wouldn't be a good idea.
So they sort of virtualise the SD card, and then when a new user is created a sort of partition is created for the user.
I was wondering what that was in ASTRO I thought it was something I did wrong and yes if you delete one file it will end up deleting both of them so be careful luckily I deleted some old downloads I didn't need anymore GOD BLESS YOU GUYS

but now, if I download a new pic from dolphin browser to the /emulated/0/pictures folder, the gallery sees my SD/pictures as well as the /emulated/0/pictures folder, the original has 99 files in, and the new one 1 file in, both are called "pictures".
the "save picture as" action opens up its own file explorer, and it wont let me go back far enough in the file tree to access the SD/pictures folder so I can only save in the new /emulated/0 folder and its sub folders?

I can't find the folder on my pc. I am trying to run a backup app and it stores it there. I try to replace the backup location to downloads for example and it won't work. It's driving me mad.
The linked directories are linked to look like separate directories but they link to what is called a mount point that the actual physical storage and the actual file. What you do in any of folders will be done in all the folders.
I'm still wrapping my mind and this and my Linux knowledge it's weak. So I'm not going to try to suggest how to deal with these folders. As much as possible I'm letting the app handle the files.

I think you are confusing a symlink'd directory with a second copy.
No one - so far - has reported a real problem related to duplicate file - so don't be expecting a fix.
Spend the time reading up on Linux directory structures instead.

It's not broken do don't expect a fix. It only 'looks' like you have duplicate files. A change you make in any single place will show up in all locations. Delete a file in one place it will be gone everywhere. The whole file system is an optical illusion. Layers on layers of naming parts of the file system.
For instance /sdcard is actually /data/media/0 if you created another user on your tab they would get /data/media/1 but they would find their files under /sdcard in a file manager.

So far I fixed this problem for myself by deleting all files from /sdcard (they disappeared from other linked locations as well) and saving them back straight to /storage/emulation/0 (they appeared in other linked locations, including /sdcard, but this time the gallery and other apps show single copy of each file in their collections).
This is not confortable for a typical user to learn about all these linked folders and I consider it as a drawback of Jelly Bean.

I am trying to understand what you are seeing.
On my device, the gallery app only shows pictures in my user: emulated/0. This is from selecting a picture and then asking for info on it.
What apps are showing duplicates, other than a file explorer that you would expect to show symlinks?
I should add - are you copying pictures directly to /sdcard from somewhere else?
Well I had a problem...because of all the multiuser crap I was unable to restore a titanium backup cause of all the emulated directories that another user makes...I had to delete every /0 directory that it made cause if you install another Rom it makes a new /0 directory inside the other /0 directory so after flashing CM10, MIUI and slim bean I finished with a directory like this: sdcard0/0/0/0.

I ran into this problem with Titanium Backup and my Nexus 7. I was trying to copy the titanium backup folder on the Nexus 7 to my windows PC (also tried mac too) as it was taking up a lot of space on the Nexus but Windows and Mac wouldn't have any of it. It just copied the folder and not the contents. Android file Transfer manager on mac just keeped crashing. I did not try adb pull folder with WugFresh toolkit, so that may work. I ended up copying from the nexus 7 to a USB drive using an OTG cable.
I been looking into this too, this is what I find so far I did a fresh install after I installed my Rom I wipe storage on my N7 so I have a clean storage nothing on it about 27.80gb after I installed one game that is 2gb and its show on both storage emulated and 0 n after my available space is 23.72gb. So I think its does create a duplicate that take space. But Im not sure.I going to run some more tests. If this is true this kinda suck cus then my 32gb n7 is only 16gb then.
Ps. Also if u reboot ur n7 and u go to storage there is another folder under emulated with 0 with the same files you can deleted this folder is save you won't loose anything but if you reboot and go back to storage the file reappear and you can delete but once u reebot again it will reappear again and over again.

No way are there 2 copies of files (unless you are auto backing up, which I do). My free space was 3.9gb before and after 4.2. Have all the extra meaningless folders.
You could think of the emulated storage locations like a shortcut. You could place multiple shortcuts to your 'My Documents' folder on your desktop without creating multiple copies of 'My Documents'.

In my Windows Explorer i dont see the same files like in my Phone with Total Commander on my Storage.
This is not funny.
So I made a NANDROID backup (SmoothROM 4.1, 4.1.2), flashed a new ROM (4.2), didn't like it so I restored my backup and now my file structure looks like this:

So the folders in 0 were my correct folders before I restored it, and now it looks like this. Does anyone know why this is like this? And how I can fix it?
The 0 is added apparently when making backups (I don't yet know why), but they are all symlinks to the same thing (sd/emulated). There are a couple threads in the QnA about this, but no good comprehensive noob friendly explanations that I have found yet.
I hope someone will chime in with a more complete/correct answer. I would like to know quite a bit more about all this.
It has to do with the user, since multi-user support is now available, say you have two user accounts for your tablet. User 1 would have their own location (/sdcard/0) and User 2 would have their own location (/sdcard/1). That's how I understand it. If incorrect, please someone let me know.
Make sure you are using the latest TWRP or CWM Recovery versions, as I believe that they deal with this issue.
So, when copying files from pc to N7, what directory do I want to paste them in for a one-user tablet?
Can we delete the "0" sub-folders made by backups? How do we clean up the system if it keeps making redundant links? There has to be a point where it is unnecessary/ a mistake.

So if I go back to 4.1 since I don't have multi-user support how can I get my default files back to the /0 folder? Because my new system is creating files in my root folder, not the 0 folder which I would rather use. Is there another way besides manually doing it (seemingly the most likely solution).
Not sure whether or not this is actually a EFS backup. It just showed up in my External SD card and it's named 'efs.tar.gz' and it's only about 5kB. What does the EFS folder contain? I have folders such as bluetooth, WiFi, IMEI, carrier, etc.
Is it necessary to do a EFS backup nowadays?

Yes, DO make a backup of your EFS folder. Find the folder on your phone (I am away from my phone right now, but I believe it is a folder off of the root directory). You can easily find this folder (on a rooted phone) by using a file manager app-- then copy the entire folder and keep one copy of it on your SD card and keep ANOTHER copy of the EFS folder on your desktop computer or off-phone on a disk.
There are several threads here by folks who have lost their EFS folders or some setting on their phones, which can only be re-aligned by the data stored in the EFS folder. I believe at least some of the data is unique to your own phone, so it can't just be copied from another phone without some effects.

Good advice, but I think more than just the EFS folder itself needs to be backed up in order to be able to restore EFS information to the phone if needed. Backing up or making a copy of the actual EFS "folder" is only part of the equation. TWRP variants usually offer an option to properly back up EFS and I have also seen several apps on the market, but I have not personally tried any of them. If anyone has any experience in methods to back up and restoring the EFS information to the phone please post your experience.
So basically all I have to do is copy the efs folder located in the /~ directory and memorize the permissions. And if anything happens I can just restore that folder and the set the permissions back?

yikes. . . not so sure (anymore) that a copy/paste and a chmod will be enough. . . A quick search for recover ESF provides numerous results inside XDA.
It seems that there are several methods to doing an effective backup of ESF data (and by effective, it means more than our copy folders!). The below thread by @tamirda offers several techniques for the I9500 model of the S4! This ESF process does seem to be "kind of" phone-specific, but perhaps some processes are fungible among all models.

From my quick (as yet unfinished) reading of some of the threads, it seems good to also know your IMEI #, independent of the ESF folder. Also --as @scott14719 stated--- there *is* more to it than just replacing the folder contents
@emckai, before you question, I was sanguine just having the folder backed up -now I am not. So thank you for asking this question! The answer is more than I thought!
Already I hit Play and downloaded/tried one of the programs. It loaded and "backed up" my ESF folder -then hot booted. However, I have not trashed my ESF data to test it so I will have to wait and see. (Some of the comments made it sound not so promising.)
But it also seems Odin can backup the ESF/IMEI data and restore it as well! I was going to see if Mobile Odin could do this too but I am running a 4.3 rom and Mobile Odin does not work so well on 4.3 yet..

Edit: not sure, but perhaps that tar file for your ESF might be left there from an original Odin Flash of a kernel or rom. . .
Yeah I did some reading also around the XDA forums and some information found on Google but the information I found wasn't that useful; mostly because it was device specific.
After looking inside the EFS folder, each file had it's own permission which would cause a headache at the end.
Doesn't TWRP recovery have the option to backup the EFS folder? But it would be the same thing? Because apparently there are 2 blocks on the device where the IMEI information is stored and whenever something happens to the EFS folder or one of the blocks, it'll trigger on the Samsung boot screen and restore whatever is contained inside those blocks.
There is a lot of misinformation going around stating about EFS so I'm just left confused.
