I can confirm that case is ugly. I'd much rather shell out $15 and buy a decent shell

I already have an official flip case ordered. suppose to arrive today. I was just curious so figured I'd give it a go and see how it looked. it does look like a bowling ball haha..
the pic doesn't really do it justice tbh.. suffice to say, if someone wants to change their moto colour I think they would get good results with proper prep and a decent spray paint.. this was mostly an experiment..

Yeah, the idea definitely has potential, and kudos to you for having the guts to pull it off, but this isnt a diy job if you want perfecfion. You need proper equipent and training. Someone who's decent with an airbrush could do wonders with this thing. Luckily i know a guy.

Yeah. An evenly sanded, then evenly sprayed cover can look just as good, if not better, than the original I imagine. I do want to thank you for giving me that idea. I might actually try something like this in that beautiful metallic orange color I often see on newer Nissan vehicles.

yea its not the best colour and finish. some plastics are more or less porous. Some will not 'take' paint well at all, so however well it is done, it will chip and peel. I was interested in seeing how well a properly keyed surface would take the paint. The Moto G back case seems to take the paint very well, with no need for a primer.
Issues:
The colours I had available weren't great, hence the strange green bowling ball look
The paint does not dry very hard (I don't have a heat lamp to fast dry it hard)
The finish isn't very even (brush as no space here to spray)
However:
If I had:
A heat lamp:
Space to spray
Time
You could easily get an extremely good finish and it would be tough and durable too. None of these items are expensive and anyone could do it, but you do need a good workspace or you will get dust sticking while drying etc etc..
Easier to buy a new back, but if you want a custom colour this is the only option..

nice work mate

i think this would have looked better with flat/matte paint instead of gloss. He's got the right idea though, this is a cheap easy way to customize your back cover:good:

Ugly, very ugly.
Not sure why you did it. Maybe drunk, on new years eve.

Gawd it looks disgusting, but 10/10 for self customisation!!
Hope you haven't done the frame as well!!

it looks good, but I would like more than you were painting with airbrush not it? some graffiti or something.

I've once bought a airbrushed back door inspired by Keith Haring's timeless art for a Nokia 6150 and to be honest I'd like to have a custom back door like that for my Moto G. I enjoyed viewing your custom work and hope that others will follow.

nice job mate, I agree spray painting needs some time and is not as easy as it seems.

I agree it doesn't look that great, but that might also be from the fuzzy picture of it. But, really, stop tearing they guy down. He did something to his case that he wanted to do. It's his to do with what he wants. He was proud enough of it to show us on the forum, so please don't tear him down.
I did like the comment about the bowling ball though. Thought that was funny.

Very tidy mate makes it stand out from the rest. What did you use to prime it and what type of paint?
Dude that looks pretty sick!! what materials did you use?
Wow. Either you're really good at taping off or you're very patient with taking apart the phone!

That's a tear down video for the HD2. I just don't know if I have that kind of patience
Yeah it took very long to disassemble the phone because i was very scared to crack the screen.
Then i sanded the whole case, applied spray paint primer and then white paint. It took the whole day because i applied 4 layers of paint.
But you are right, its a bit to white, so i'll apply some black graphics so.
And thanks for your comments.

I saw before one brother here posted his HTC Leo, he applied a car vinyl sticker on his battery cover with carbon fiber design. It was quite impressive also.

[Q] Look at my new battery door? :) :) :)

What do you think everyone, Give us a rating from 1 to 5
5 that is pretty damn sweet. How did you do it
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA Premium App
i rate it a 5 cuz its AWSOME!!! btw i have a few scratches on the battery door cover. can i polish it too to hide the scratches?
What i done was use sand paper designed for metal Or wet and dry sandpaper would also do just fine. then just use a cloth and apply metal polish to it along with the grain of the metal. took me 30 minutes and the metal polish was under £5. And it got rid of all the scratches that were on it so its a good scratch remover too
It looks good. I did this on my HD2. The only problem is it becomes tarnished, scratched and rather unsightly in no time. I often wondered if some sort of lacquer may have been the answer.
i might think of doing this later. is the door more prone to scratches after the polish?
polish it thenput on a full body protector imo
I should probably consider doing this, it looks pretty sweet, and my battery door is currently covered in scratches, and the whatever the coating that goes over the aluminum is, is starting to peel off.
Although I'm likely going to get an extended battery from Seidio, so I'll probably hold off until then, since I'll be getting a new battery door with it.
Might try something like this too. My G2's battery door has the stock clear coat plastic flaking off. I've started to just peel all of it off so I can do something else to it.
i done it a week ago and its just fine no scratches at all, if im not sure the coating they put on the battery door is what scratches because once i had taken it off the scratches disappeared. its like a mirror if you put enough metal polish on it i notice people admiring themselves in the back of my phone when im texting
Should try clear plastidip to coat the polished door.

I remember when this was done a while back, it's still pretty cool. I scraped off my coating when it started peeling. Just use something like copper or a hard plastic so it doesn't scratch the metal. Not sure, but something like acetone should be able to soften the coating and remove it.
By the way - how in the hell did you remove the 'G2' on there? It's recessed just as much as the 'HTC' and I wouln't grind the plate down that much personally. So how did you do it?
EDIT: Took a second look and saw the 'with htc sense'. No wonder it doesn't say G2 lol.
GREAT i rate u 10 i love it
All together this cost less than £5 and a little elbow grease. I would of made a step by step guide or video if I knew anyone else wanted to do it. Because it's very simple to do.
Looks nice!
I customized mine using the laser cutter at my university. I lasered part of a maze that I generated using some algorithm we had to code as an assignment in the protective film (sadly, the laser isn't strong enough to really engrave the cover). It does have quite a few scratches after six months sadly. Maybe I'll buy a new one on ebay and make something else

Being that the phone is made out of aluminum you would think it won't break as easy as any plastic phone.
I'm considering going without a case due the fact that a case just takes away all the beauty of the phone.

A lot of people buy phones then resell them to get the next big thing. You drop the phone, the resale value plummets.
You don't have to get a dam otter box and cover it up. Just a clear case would do, or any of those skin protectors.
But hey, if your super duper careful go case less. Just trying to save people from the drop of doom.

Could care less about resale value, I bought it to use it and enjoy it, and in the case of the One (and One X), how they felt in my hand and how they looked had more to do with my decision to buy them as the hardware specs.
I've got a drawer full of old phones, I don't resell anything, though I might give one away or loan one out.
I drop it and break it, oh well, I'll get another one. I put a blemish on it, oh well, I live with it.
Scratches on the camera lens are no big deal either, it's a cell phone camera, it looks like crap to varying degrees even when it's un-scratched.

My One X is in pretty good shape, no protection. I have a scratch on the glass that was clearly from a diamond ring. Other than that there is miniscule damage in one place on the metal strip around the screen.
The SIM tray looks atrocious, but protection wouldn't help with that since I use it; it appears to be made of some kind of soft cheese. A new one is less than a fiver.

Why? All hazards like loose change and keys are kept in a separate side compartment.
There's not much in the purse pocket it goes into besides leather wallet, and some lipstick which has a plastic exterior
My black One is still in great condition only two very very little marks at the top edge, barely noticeable and easily covered by using a black marker. I don't baby my phone anymore as I did in the first few days, but I don't deliberately risk scratching it by sharing the same pocket with other hard object either.
I know it will stand my daily use well without needing a case.

sometimes i really wonder about the intelligence level of some XDA users
Actually there are some reviews of early iPhone 5s in black where apparently the surface was so fragile you could write your name in the black surface on the back using a fingernail! I think the One doesn't suffer quite at that level, but it will chip. Still, any phone thrown in a bag with all sorts of bits and pieces is asking for trouble if you are expecting to remove it still in pristine condition!
The One S had similar issues with the ARC finish if I recall correctly.
Those are chips. So throwing a phone in a bag/purse cannot cause that. Has to hit the ground or she dropped it and didn't know or something.

The htc One does not have MAO coating as seen on htc one s, it's only anodized silver. So it does not have the same chipping issue but because silver is soft, hitting on hard object will still leave a mark.

Yes, agree, my wife is like the op lady who doesn't really look after her phone well, she drops it, throws it, forgets where she left it all the time, they are just normal people using their phone. We all know putting One with coins, keys will damage it, and I think that will be all.
However, like I did to my wife's phone, I would suggest simply getting a good tpu case, then you are good to abuse the phone.

I think you'll find it's made of an anodised aluminium alloy, not silver, and is harder than silver.
I think there is little doubt at this point that the black finish isn't as well suited to standing up to the rigours of daily as the silver version. Paul Obrien's black one got scuffed up without being dropped on hard surfaces quite quickly, and lord knows I will trust his experience more than most of the forumers here.

Well, I wouldn't just conclude on that, because as a black One owner, my One is holding up quite well, and as I said, I don't baby my phone anymore, but will still take good care of it.
I think it's in the end down to personal preference, one thing we cannot argue is that aluminum is soft and it will get marks if you don't look after it, see iPhone 5 as a living example, so when it gets scratched, the underlying silver colour will be more noticeable on black phone than on a silver phone, so black owners naturally take the risk. However, a simple permanent black marker will do a perfect job of covering those marks.
Both silver and black share the same coating, anodized aluminum, so in terms of vulnerability of scratching, they are the same, only difference is noticeability (is it a word? Well you get my point.)

I am correcting myself here, in terms of the back of the phone, both black and silver have anodized aluminum but the chambered edge does not. It may just be painted in black on black One and exposed natural silver on silver One. So yes, the chambered edge if scratched on black One may look nasty. But again, only if you don't take good care of your phone.

Don't put your phone in a purse. Simple as that. God knows what's in there. There could be a whole sandy beach at the bottom.
Is it just me or does that look like a black HTC One dummy unit and not a real phone? The black dummy units don't have actual holes cut for the speaker grills, just little faded paint dots, which is what that looks like. I would think the speaker holes would look a lot darker in the pictures if they were actually holes. The dummy units have way crappier build quality so that would totally invalidate the findings.

How I FIXED the slipperyness of the HTC One m8

I usually don't like to use cases, bought one for the m8. It made it bulky so i found a sleek way of gripping it. No company made griping product, just plain ol' electrical tape.
You can style (cut) how you want for your preference. I put it there because of the bottom three fingers that grip that part of the phone. It's sleek, none intrusive, actually does a very good job gripping. I can shake it and it will stay put. Photos should be attached. Tell me your thoughts

Looks good OP! I just ordered this... https://dbrand.com/shop/htc-one-m8. I ordered the matte black front and back. I had one on my m7 and really liked it.

As a European, I have to ask, what's the connection "living in the south" --> preferring duct tape?

Lol... It is a bit of an Americanism & joke, although one that is seated in truth...
Duct tape in America is used to affect many repairs, from simple tears in paper, to re-attaching bumper to automobiles & securing trunk lids (what the EU calls the boot). It is used to make or repair wallets, shoes & even for furniture repairs, not just for attaching ducting to plenum boxes or GRD cans.
The joke comes in because it is said that a redneck (slanderous term for blue collar worker or laborer) can fix anything with duct tape, & that if it can't be fixed with duct tape, then 'F' it, it's broken.

This may work well if you live somewhere cool year round, however, if you live anywhere its fairly hot and/or humid during the summer - then you know what happens to electrical tape. When it heats up - you lose the bond, then the tape will slide around leaving a sticky, slimy mess all over your phone/hand/pocket. Just a heads up for anyone looking to do this. If your phone lives indoors, however, I'm sure its a non-issue.

Not sure if u also considered the fact that phones can heat up. My m7 gets pretty hot sometimes like when gaming and charging (probably shouldn't) don't know if the m8 heats up though but then again where I live its 110 during summers, was 107 this week

Thanks exactly what I did! cost me 1.99 for the front and back and I couldn't be happier! great quality product, completely clear and adds a great amount of grip to it! Best purchase I have done so far for my M8

Does the Xtremeguard back skin wrap ONLY around the back, or does it wrap around to the sides as well? I'm ideally looking for a skin that ONLY covers the back, which is for some reason surprisingly hard to find with the M8. Most skins wrap around the sides too. The idea I had was to use it with an edge only bumper case, and when a skin wraps around to the sides, it interferes with the fitment of the case. I had a aluminum edge bumper + back skin on the M7 and loved the setup.
