[Q] How can i fix it? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, my problem is when i try to call someone this message pops "Not registered on network".This all happened when i changed from stock to arrow rom, everything ran smoothly but this message kept popping up even on any rom plus stock. I've searched on this forum for the same problem and seems like it can be solved with files called "EFS".
Thank god i did full nandroid backup before changing to arrow rom, so i tried to restore but every single time twrp says "no os installed do you wish to continue?" so i continued as if twrp is nuts but the phone gets stuck on the black screen after you restart the phone.I also tried installing stock firmware which is "I9500XXUEMJ5" then downloading nandroid manager and restore from there, but still not working.
Honestly i don't know what to do now as a phone without the ability to make calls is useless.I don't know why nandroid backup is not working properly, but the file is 3.7gb which contains EFS system etc...
Update: Seems like my backup is corrupted so backing up is impossible, which is fine.
Update(1):There is a new firmware for my phone "XSG" which is:
Product Code: XSG
PDA: I9500XXUEMJ8
CSC: I9500OJVEMJ8
MODEM: I9500XXUEMJ8
So shall i just wipe cache, data etc../factory reset then install using Odin V3.09?
And after that shall i download the specific modem too? or is it already installed with the firmware?
Thanks in advance!

This nandroid backup is corrupted. The unique u have to do is flash a CLEAN STOCK ROM for ur device and dont restore the backup.
*EDIT: I hope it solve ur problem. Next time use this ONE for backup ur EFS

Alright i am a noob,so can you tell me what do you mean by saying "CLEAN STOCK ROM".And if i do will i get "Not registered on network" message? since "EFS" files must be the ones i backed up.

Go into Settings, About device, Status, does your IMEI number show?
By clean stock rom, you'll need to flash a stock rom via Odin. Whats your current baseband version? Also are you on new knox bootloader or old non knox bootloader?

That's fine you have KNOX.
You'd need to choose the correct firmware, if you think MJ5 was the one you had installed then flash that, although your free to flash whatever is higher like the newest FW for I9500 but not you will not be able to downgrade to a lower FW version.
Instructions For Flashing Firmware:
- Extract (unzip) the firmware file
- Download Odin3 v3.09
- Open Odin3 v3.09
- Restart phone in download mode (Press and hold Home + Power + Volume down buttons)
- Connect phone and wait until you get a blue sign in Odin
- Add I9505XXUEMJ5_I9505OXAEMJ5_I9505XXUEMJ5_HOME.tar.md5 to AP (The firmware you have downloaded)
- Make sure re-partition is NOT ticked
- Click start button, sit back and wait a few minutes.
- If you encounter any issues with the firmware (Any FC, Bootloop etc)
- Boot into recovery mode (Home+power+vol up)
- Choose to wipe/factory reset. (THIS WILL ERASE ALL OF YOUR DATA INCLUDING YOUR INTERNAL SD CARD!)
- Then choose reboot and you should be good to go!

Still no luck at all.If there is no other way to solve it,shall i give it back to Samsung to fix it? And will they take it because i rooted the phone?

I reckon your EFS is corrupted. Try flashing another modem to rule out modem issues.

[BEWARE]Samsung made improvements against reseting flash counter

To start with, I'm flash addict and always trying to flash new roms/firmwares. However after flashing one of the newest samsung firmware i got this little red exlamation mark:
{

I have tried to reset flash counter in a lot of ways but it always stayed at number "1" (After you reset with triangle away latest, opening app again shows 0 flash counter but after reboot it increases to 1). Even if my flash counter was 5, after reset it was staying with 1. Seems that samsung introduced some security improvements against reseting flash counter for galaxy s3.
But one xda member InsteadWoolf published solution to reset flash counter:
1- Reset via Triangle Away
2- Turn off phone and go to download mode.
3- Then flash via odin pc the stock firmware you want.
After this method flash counter is 0. However if you go for custom rom or not stock kernel, that red exlamation mark comes back and flash counter increases to 1.
BIG CREDITS TO InsteadWoolf
So what firmware are you claiming Samsung has hacked as i have yet to see this on any build .

i cant say exactly because didnt notice when i got it but i think with the latest BLH3 one ics. Never had this problem before, was flashing a lot via pc odin and reseting to 0 easily. And before i had even flash counter 5 and there wasnt any red exlamation mark like in the picture.
Thanks for noticing.

As i have flashed and reset at least 50 times in the last few weeks .

Nothing bar standard rom count of 1.
Run TA still nothing and counter 0 .
I wonder if something else is triggering the red mark .

ODIN
Odin is a tool developed by Samsung to be used internally. It is used to flash firmware onto Android devices. You can flash .tar, .tar.md5 or .bin firmware files using Odin. There are different versions of Odin available. You can choose one depending on your device. ROM files flashable with Odin come with .tar extension. Most of the ROMs you are going to flash with Odin are the official stock Samsung ROMs (or leaked stock ROMs). Custom ROMs are rarely flashable by Odin because they come with .zip extension that Odin does not recognize (it recognizes .tar files).
Custom kernels, however, are sometimes provided in .tar format by their developers, so that they can be flashed by Odin. When your phone is new and running official firmware you most often cannot flash a custom ROM to it because a Samsung phone often requires a custom recovery and root rights that are included in a custom kernel to be able to flash custom ROMs.
.PIT
It refers to the Partition Information Table you only need it if you screw up your partition table or if the firmware specifically requires it because of a change in the partition table layout. It's very likely you may never have to use this.
If you checked the “Re-Partition” checkbox, you should also specify a .pit file to repartition the file system.

Using ODIN can change your bootloader to show that the system is MODIFIED and may increase your ODIN flash count.
So keep the F.Reset Time always ticked
Please read them all the way through and then begin.
Charge your phone well before proceeding.
You do not need to root or unroot the device to update the firmware.
Please ensure that KIES is closed and not running in the system tray! Kies doesn't like Odin, it's like the big brother who's always jealous that his little brother is getting to flash all the phones so he starts to flash block.
Regarding change logs. Samsung thinks firmware should be like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get and that all a big part of the surprise user experience program so they don't publish any change logs.

Edit: oops i read your question wrong.
This may be a firmware problem.
Try firmware of different version.
Maybe the problem was that i dirty flashed it and didnt wiped data/system/cache before.
When I flash stock without root do OTA's work again? With a rooted system they doesn't work because bootloader/partition get the information that a custom rom is installed. But does the stock firmware reverse this?

The OTA update will work even if you are rooted, as long as you haven ' t modified/deleted any of the existing OS files. You can add files w /o issues
rooting your phone only adds files
Usually your phone is doing the downloading of the OTA update .zip , but i would suggest you download them yourself and flash through stock recovery.

The update script verifies the system before it installs. If its not stock and some apps have been deleted then ota update will fail.
As i told you rooting dosent make a difference, it only adds files.
If you dont want bloatwares and also ota update to work you can freeze the apps by using titanium backup

By "fail" you mean that the phone wouldn't even upgrade? Because the updateprocess was succesfull (according to kies) but Wifi wasn't working and I had a lot of FC's of Googleapps and Userapps.
So a fresh installed system will succesfully update?
By the time when Triangle Away supports i9195 ota's without kies will be possible again because the increased flash counter refuses to let the phone update by itself.
If iI set F.Reset Time in Odin, does this do the same as triangle away? Reseting the flash timer to 0?

Yes it does exactly the same thing.
Record of how many times firmware was flashed onto the phone, leaving this checked will reset the counter to 0 which it should be always.
I have not tried it though.
Use it at your own risk

Just wanted to note, that in some version of ODIN, the option actually says "AP". For example:

I flashed the firmware via Odin successfully, wiped data & cache, but when it booted up, I still had root access, and when I try to officialy update rom(to 4.3) via stock it says device is modified.
What could be wrong here?
edit: The phone was actually unrooted, but it didnt reset flash timer, even when I did check reset f timer. Tried flashing again, same issue.
now im stuck with status:custom, any suggestions?
meanwhile ill try triangleaway.

I'm new to android, I had spent several weeks search through net but I couldnt find any solution. I was planning to rooting my Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini GT-i9192 purposely just to swap internal memory with my newly bought 64GB external sd card memory (due to internal 8GB memory is way too small for me). My problem is I dont want to void my phone warranty, it still have 1 year plus plus warranty. And I found out after rooting my devices, I can use triangle away to reset binary count from 1 to 0 (In my device it should shown from Custom to Official). But I couldnt find any triangle away can support GT-9192 or any other S4 mini series (or any other fellow who share their story regard their success on reset their S4 Mini binary count from 1 to 0) on the google search, any solution? Please advice, sorry for my broken english.

Just flash the latest Lollipop again and it should be fixed.
What do you mean Lollipop didn't work? It works, so what steps did you take?

ok just finished flashing . the same problem persist i bypassed the boot but still can't turn on wifi also no sound no camera .what to do ?
Hi, I have same problem as neoom. After flash to LP phone doesn't make any sound at all and the camera is off. I've tried flashing with firmware from Lenny1988 twice but it didn't change anything. I've tried flashing new modem and bootloader - still no sound. Anyone could help?
Use kies tool to upgrade your phone. Go to tools, firmware upgrade and initialization, enter the model number (ex : GT-I9505 with capital letters), then the s/n that you will find on the back sticker behind battery and kies will find and restore the correct csc, will repartition your phone, will wipe all the partitions and will flash the most appropriate firmware for your phone depending on the correct region. Your wifi and camera may not work because toy have a mismatching cp and ap so let the Samsung kies do the job for you remember not to connect the phone while inputting the model number and sn but only when it tells you to connect it in Odin mode.
Kies says GT-I9505 does not support initialization.

The flashing was succesfull right? Odin gave no errors?
Then flash the firmware again only in this case with a pit and re-partition.
Get the pit from here:

Maybe you are using the wrong version of Kies? Use Kies3. Because as you can see in this image, i can start initialization.(i cannot enter S/N because i have the gt-i9506) but pay attention to the capital letters! Write it down as the sticker behind the battery sais!

Let me be clear - of course i used Kies3, I'm getting the messege of not supported model after entering proper serial number (checked in Settings menu in phone and on the back sticker).
Hmm that's really weird. Then try to start this procedure while phone is connected to kies. I've done this on a i9505 to friend of mine so I know that there is a way to filly restore phone. Otherwise download the official rom from sammobile depending on your country and flash it via Odin.

Help me out guys.
Recently, I updated my phone to the BOD2 ROM as repackaged by @_alexndr. I have always used his repackaged ROMs since BOB4 days and its always went super well so I doubt its the cause of my issue.
I updated bootloader to BOD2 and the repacked BOC4 modem respectively. It worked well, super fast, I received call, sent SMS and used data until the following day when my network services just stopped working.
Can't send SMS, can't make calls, cant use data. I've changed sim cards to other networks but its the same thing. "Emergency call only".
In addition to that, this message is always sent to my most recently contacted person via SMS although it never goes through.
I have gone back to KitKat to see if it will solve it but it didn't. I tried different modems but it won't work. I'm not back on the BOD2 firmware.
What can I do please?

Unfortunately, anyway - it looks like EFS and/or related ID partitions damage. It usually happen for users with root and/or custom recovery, e.g. immediately after flashing a ZIP file. Fortunately, users with root can easy backup EFS + related ID partitions and easy restore it in such emergency case.
1. If you rooted your phone in the past and created the backup of all sensitive ID partitions - just restore it using same tool as you used for backup
2. If you never rooted your phone and still have KNOX 0x0 - the best way is warranty repair in an authorized service center (with a high probability - on the spot). Authorized services have tools to rebuild all sensitive partitions. Do not forget to flash your original ROM before you go to the service center
You have written that it occured after a few days after ROM/modem flashing, so in my opinion it is not related to ROM/modem you flashed

Yes I have rooted in the past and I have a custom recovery to flash your repacked version of stock ROMs.
However I don't have an EFS backup or any other backup. Does the EFS reset to default if I use Odin or Samsung's official way of flashing a firmware using kies?
My Knox is also (0x1)4 which means warranty will probably mess me over.

If IMEI is correct and you have no Network then there are some possibilities
1.try different sim card
2.rarely physical damage to sim tray
3.network setting - checkout this
setting - more - mobile network - Network mode - set to Auto
Sometime if you set to wcdam/lte and you are on area where service not available this can happen
4.network locked - confirm by talking to your operator.
5.rarely modem issue. - try flashing stock ROM and factory reset
If your IMEI is correct nothing wrong with efs don't try to manipulate in any way but to be safer make your EFS backup earliest if you haven't yet.

I have tried all those options apart from contacting my operator. I don't see a reason why it should ne network locked.

I thought that you have tried with flashing firmware using Odin (you wrote that you have tried KK - I thought that it was pure stock)
Try as @dr.ketan said, but in my opinion you should start with p.5 and then perform wipe data
If it will help - DO NOT FORGET TO MAKE EFS/ID BACKUP devil never sleeps
If it will not help - I heard that paid EFS/ID repair isn't expensive

Sorry I meant I have flashed back stock KitKat with Odin but I haven't tried kies. My bad. I resorted to stock kitkat unrooted
last night but still the same thing.
One more thing. One possibility is your modem may not updated. I have seen some cases where rom is not having latest modem can cause this but again never seen that with intact IMEI.
Best way is go with latest stock ROM with odin and factory reset using stock recovery (you will lose Int SD data )

So try to flash the newest Lollipop, maybe it is not possible to revert back from BOD2 (with the newest modem) to KK? I'm not sure, just suppose.. Remember - power off your phone for a few seconds and then go directly to DM, otherwise it is possible that modem will not be flashed correctly (as @dr.ketan mentioned already)
Try this, due to fast mirrors:

It is pure stock BOD2 with OXA multi CSC package. Read THIS THREAD for more info

Just side note.
One condition I am sure fail to flash BL Modem though Odin give message 'Passed' successfully.
If user select to put device in download mode using 4/5way reboot menu/Select reboot to download mode from recovery and flash BL Modem
Only it applies correctly if entered download mode with three button combo.

I reverted with the stock KitKat that came with the phone yesterday with Odin. It wiped the internal storage and it also reverted the modem from bod2. It didn't work with the old modem either.
I'll try latest lollipop ROM for btu to see if anything changes

This is exactly what I've always been using and I'm on BOD2 right now. I'm a huge follower of your work.
I'm not sure if anyone can identify the problem from this.
Whenever I turn the phone on, this jargon is always trying to send itself to my most recent contact on SMS.
I have this same problem with my n910F device, it started yesterday and I couldn't call or text anyone, but data over mobile still worked. Now I can't even use data anymore. I have tried flashing different roms and stock rom with odin, but it hasn't helped. IMEI is still intact and everything... Carrier couldn't help either.
