How to root : Android 4.4.2 (OFFICIAL OTA / Temporal Method) / No longer necessary - Moto G General

I made it (OTA US Global) NO REPACK / OFFICIAL OTA
The bootloader is the problem (you need to flash the 4.3 boot loader)
Warining: (thx to @Entropy512)
Flashing bootloaders is a dangerous operation - it's one of the few ways you can hardbrick your device.
THIS IS TEMPORAL , you take the risk.
The steps:
Flash bootloader.img of android 4.3 (us global) / mfastboot.exe flash motoboot motoboot.img
4.3 bootloader -> http://www.mediafire.com/download/7i75m96r692rp78/bootloader-downgrade.zip
Flash the Custom Recovery / mfastboot.exe flash recovery recovery.img
Install superSU zip from the recovery
You can come back to 4.4 Bootloader / But you can't use the recovery
4.4 bootloader -> http://www.mediafire.com/download/wd4rhkqbo7797r0/bootloader4.4.zip

Thx to fibblesan who gave me the idea
(Sorry for my bad english)
THIS METHOD IS NO LONGER NECESSARY
just flash CWM and SuperSU -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2563599

With the 4.3 boatloader, you can actually flash the recovery permanently instead of just booting from it. If you want. But yeah. I did this with the official 4.4 OTA and it worked perfectly. Thanks for doing a guide for others.

Do anyone have the 4.3 stock recovery or where do we get out from?

I tried but I'm getting a boot failed error in the bootloader screen

Thanks this method works great got cwm and root on official kitkat ota. I flashed the US motoboot.img, then flashed cwm recovery, and finally flashed su. All is working great for me!

Attached is the bootloader from 4.3 and mfastboot. You will want to flash the bootloader using mfastboot instead of just regular fastboot. You need to make sure you have ADB setup.
Just extract these files to the folder where ADB is located, then open a command prompt to that same folder and run this command:
mfastboot flash motoboot motoboot.img
Click to collapse
Then you can flash CWM recovery and it will work just fine for you. The first time you reboot from CWM, it will ask if you want to disable the stock recovery flash. Make sure you chose "yes".

You'll need to flash supersu in CWM.

What happens if you flash 4.3's bootloader, then say you want to flash 4.4 bootloader again?

I'll go a week without root, and come back if I miss it so see you all in a week!

You can just flash the 4.4 bootloader after. Unless we find some major issues running kitkat with the older bootloader then it's probably best to stay with the older one as you cannot use any custom recovery with the newer bootloader.
Here are the bootloaders:
4.3 http://www.mediafire.com/download/7i75m96r692rp78/bootloader-downgrade.zip
4.4 http://www.mediafire.com/download/wd4rhkqbo7797r0/bootloader4.4.zip
Both zips contain the moto fastboot which you need to use to flash them to your device.

I missed it on the very first boot. No root, no Titanium Restore and no Gravity Box. Reason enough to do the easy step outlined here, worked just fine.

Can this be used for United Kingdom Moto G too?

[4.4.3] Remove Unlocked Bootloader message!

Hello Guys,
I have sucessfully managed to remove the UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER WARNING message from phone boot.
4.4 image is slightly different from 4.2.2 image, is has the same Green M Logo, but now it says "A Google company"
4.4.3 image says "Powered by Android" instead of "A Google company
You just need to:
Download and Unzip the attachment and run:
Code:
fastboot flash logo logo_nowarning-4.4.bin
(This will not bring your warranty back, tho)
Enjoy!
EDIT:
Updated with 4.4.3 image! Unzip and run:
fastboot flash logo logo.bin

Nope, because Motorola already did.

That's for the Developer Edition device, so you still have voided your warranty if you have unlocked a device which is not a developer one That's my case! But thanks for pointing it out, great news!
This doesn't work on droid maxx DE. Thought these phones were the same unless they changed something in the KK boot loader.

pretty sure it does. look in the themes section. you could replace it with whatever image you want essentially.
Is it the same command for 4.2.2? If not can you give it to me, want to rid my phone of this....thanks..
Okay it works, but sort of a noob with adb, what would I use to put any image on? Now it just a garble of colours etc...so any help would be most appreciated on what to label the image to flash properly or where do I drop the new image!!

You have probably flashed the ZIP instead of what's inside. Make sure to unzip the package before flashing (with fastboot, not adb)

LOL well another noob question, I did unzip the file, so how do I flash with fastboot? Do I not use android-sdk tools and a command prompt and fastboot flash logo logo_nowarning-4.4.bin? I gather it is how I am attempting to flash...
It would be great if you could create one for 4.2.2.....at this point I would say it sort of works on 4.2.2.

Just curious about the difference between mfastboot (motorola fastboot) and fastboot as it pertains to Motorola phones. I know I had to use mfastboot for flashing TWRP recovery and getting root with Supersu after unlocking my T-Mobile Moto x. But regular fastboot works fine with flashing the OP file? Would mfastboot work as well?

Fastboot is used for unlocked boot loaders and cfastboot is used for locked boot loaders. Did you mean c not m?

No, mfastboot is Motorola's modified fastboot utility that supposedly works better on Motorola devices. I think it has to be used for flashing .img files due to a size discrepancy in one of the partitions. I was just wondering for regular kinds of flashing zips if it matters which fastboot utility is used.

Warning: Update to LRX21Q fails when rooted.

Hi all,
on my Nexus 9, update to LRX21Q failed: After reboot, the android icon was shown with "error" below.
I suppose, update failed as my system is rooted with the method Chainfire posted in the development forum.
After an additional reboot, the previous firmware is still shown. The system does not offer the update anymore but claims to be up-to-date.
Any hints? Thanks in advance.
Maybe it's the modified kernel from Chainfire. Try to get back to the stock kernel and try again.
Download the factory image, flash recovery, boot, system & vendor.
Your software will be updated and you won't lose any data. You will lose root however.
I got the same error from OTA with no root. Only had 9 for 2 days, got OTA rite out of box no issue.
Yesterday for new build i get little error android icon upon reboot/install.
Obviously, something that is being changed by the "root" process is being checked DURING the update process. Probably a checksum on the boot partition. If it doesn't match, it bails on the update.
The likely reason for this is they acknowledge that you don't want to lose your root.
All it means is that you need to do the update manually.
It may be possible for a modified recovery to bypass this check, or possibly even be made to auto-root new boot images.
Thanks, guys. Will try as suggest above and post results.
Update: worked perfectly, needed to root again though.

Update failed on me too. Completely stock
UPDATE:
Apparently *some* devices didn't get the recovery updated with the last update (LRX21L).
The new update (LRX21Q) requires the newer version of the recovery to install.
Google really messed up the launch of the Nexus 9 with all the HW/SW quality control issues
Serious f#ck-up from Google really
Interesting thing I noticed: I restored factory images manually in order to unroot and the OTA was no longer available. I verified I was still running on L. I manually installed the update and it went in just fine.
Now waiting on the root package to be updated for the Q kernel. You can re-root but you will be running on the L kernel, not the Q kernel.

[updated] THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO FLASH GPE LOLLIPOP 5.1 on XT1032/33/34 WITH ROOT

Okay, so there has been a lot of confusion an ambiguity on how to successfully install the GPE lollipop update on the Moto G. The reason I am starting this guide is because I faced a lot of trouble myself trying to get this update and get stuff working.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: EASY (NOOB FREINDLY )
WARNING:
I HAVE TESTED THIS FULL PROCEDURE MYSELF. BUT I SHALL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY PROBLEMS THAT MIGHT OCCUR BY USING THIS PROCEDURE, THOUGH I SHALL TRY MY BEST TO SOLVE THEM IF YOU FACE ANY. DUAL SIM USERS, ONLY SINGLE SIM WORKS BECAUSE IT IS A GPE FIRMWARE AND THERE IS NO WORKAROUND FOR IT. THIS PROCEDURE DOES NOT WORK WITH XT1031 (confirmed by @goldeneagle1972 )
THIS PROCEDURE WILL WIPE ALL YOUR DATA ON THE PHONE. SO TAKE A BACKUP.
EXISTING GPE 5.0.1/2 USERS, FLASH THE ORIGINAL GPE MODEMS FIRST AND MAKE SURE YOUR SYSTEM ISN'T MODIFIED. (eg: rooted ). THEN DIRECTLY GO TO STEP 5.
THE REST OF YOU, FLASH THE 5.1 GPE FIRMWARE [HERE] FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS IN STEP 2.2 AND THEN GO DIRECTLY TO STEP 6
PREREQUISITES:
You will need an unlocked boot loader. If you have not already unlocked it, refer to [this]
STEP 1:
Download the 4.4.4 GPE XT1032 FIRMWARE from [here] [mirror]
Download mfastbootv2 from [here]
Download the minimal sdk from [here]
Download and install adb drivers from [here]
Download the batch files for all the commands from [here]. (OBSOLETE)
Download the batch files for flashing 5.1 firmware and fixing network from [here]
Download Motorola drivers from [here]
Reboot system after installing drivers.
Download THE 5.1 GPE FIRMWARE [HERE] FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS IN STEP 2.2 AND THEN GO DIRECTLY TO STEP 6
Extract the GPE firmware archive, batchfiles archive and mFastbootv2 archive to the Minimal ADB and Fastboot folder (or your folder containing the platform-tools)
Download OTA update from [here]. Rename it to "ota".
Copy this archive to the same folder mention above (do not extract this archive).
STEP 2:
Boot into fastboot (POWER+VOLUME DOWN) and connect phone to PC
If you are starting from scratch, skip 2.1 ) and go to 2.2 )
2.1 ) If you have already made a failed attempt to OTA, or have previously flashed the Brazilian OTA, then flash the GPE 4.4.4 firmware follow this step. SHIFT + RIGHT click in the folder where you have extracted everything and choose open command window here. Then double-click on "Step 2_1.bat" or type the following commands one by one.
Code:
mfastboot flash boot boot.img
mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
mfastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot erase modemst1
mfastboot erase modemst2
mfastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
mfastboot erase cache
mfastboot erase userdata
mfastboot reboot
You will not get network now but do not flash the modems of the firmware you use now because you will get a status 7 error when flashing the OTA. You will now be dumped at the welcome screen. Do not enter any details, just power off and boot into recovery via fastboot. Skip step 2.2)
YOU WILL GET SOME ERRORS LIKE HAB CHECK FAILED. JUST IGNORE AND PROCEED.
2.2 ) For those who haven't attempted the OTA or are not on the Brazilian Firmware, use the following method to flash the 4.4.4 GPE firmware. SHIFT + RIGHT click in the folder where you have extracted everything and choose open command window here. Then double-click on "Step 2_2.bat" or type the following commands one by one. (Thank you @jmonster141 for pointing out my silly error).
Code:
mfastboot flash partition gpt.bin
mfastboot flash motoboot motoboot.img
mfastboot flash logo logo.bin
mfastboot flash boot boot.img
mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.3
mfastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot erase modemst1
mfastboot erase modemst2
mfastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
mfastboot erase cache
mfastboot erase userdata
mfastboot reboot
You will not get network now but do not flash the modems of the firmware you use now because you will get a status 7 error when flashing the OTA. You will now be dumped at the welcome screen. Do not enter any details, just power off and boot into recovery via fastboot.
IT SEEMS THAT SOME 4.4.4 FIRMWARE HAVE NEWER PARTITION TABLES THAN GPE 4.4.4, SO THE GPT.BIN WILL FAIL TO FLASH. JUST SKIP IT AND YOU'L BE FINE (confirmed by @SickBeast ) or TAKE A LOOK AT [THIS] (thank you @t4n017 ).
AFTER ERASING USERDATA AND REBOOTING, YOUR PHONE MIGHT BOOT DIRECTLY INTO FASTBOOT AND IT WILL SAY "UTAG FLASHFAIL CONFIGURED AS FASTBOOT. JUST REFLASH THE BOOTLOADER TO FIX
Code:
mfastboot flash motoboot motoboot.img
(thank you @t4n017 again )
YOU WILL GET SOME ERRORS LIKE HAB CHECK FAILED. JUST IGNORE AND PROCEED.
STEP 3:
Now we shall flash the OTA. Boot into recovery. You shall see a weird android logo with an exclamation mark. AFTER THAT HOLD VOL+ FOR 15 SECONDS, THEN TAP POWER BUTTON (KEEP HOLDING THE VOL+ BUTTON) (thank you @thestory101) and choose apply update from adb in the recovery. Then double-click on "Step 3.bat" or type the following command:
Code:
adb sideload ota.zip
OR just OTA from Settings>About phone>System updates (confirmed by @t4n017) though i would yet recommend using the former procedure.
STEP 4:
Once it has finished, select reboot system now from the recovery. DO NOT WIPE YOUR CACHE. YOU WILL BE STUCK AT THE GOOGLE BOOT LOGO SCREEN FOR AROUND 10-20 SECONDS. JUST BE PATIENT. If you are stuck for more than 20 seconds, just flash [this].
STEP 5:
Now check your phone for and update and you shall get an update notification for 5.1 lollipop. Follow onscreen procedures and complete the update.
STEP 6:
SKIP THIS if you have EUROPEAN XT1032.
Download XT1033 modems [here] if you have the Asian Moto G. THESE MODEMS APPARENTLY DON'T WORK. LOOK AT POST NO. 593 FOR FIX.
Download XT1034 modems [here] if you have the Canadian Moto G
Download XT1032 US GSM modems [here] if you have the us version (thank you @jmonster141)
I HAVE GIVEN LINKS TO ALL THE MODEMS OF THE COMMON VARIANTS OF THE MOTO G. IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT VARIANT, DOWNLOAD YOUR RESPECTIVE FIRMWARE, COPY THE "NON-HLOS.bin" and "fsg.bin" FROM YOUR ORIGINAL FIRMWARE TO THE FOLDER WHERE YOU HAVE THE SDK, mFastboot, GPE FIRMWARE AND OTA AFTER STEP 3 AND FOLLOW STEP 5 TO GET NETWORK. IT IS EXTREMELY TIME CONSUMING FOR ME TO HUNT DOWN MODEMS FOR ALL THE NUMEROUS VARIANTS AND LINK THEM IN THE OP (IM KINDA BUSY WITH MY STUDIES RIGHT NOW) SO PLEASE TAKE THE PAIN TO DO SO YOURSELF. ALSO, LINK THE MODEMS YOU USED,TO GET NETWORK, IN THE THREAD SO I CAN ADD IT TO THE OP AND HELP THE REST. (That's how the amazing XDA community works right ?! )

I had flashed the update on my Moto G XT1033 converted to GPE using the mixed firmware by @deej_roamer [using this tutorial], OTAed to 4.4.4 and flashed the OTA manually using ADB. I was stuck at the bootlogo following this. This was because of the firmware being modified this interfering with the OTA. Since i was now stuck with the new 41.18 bootloader and the partition table (gpt.bin) of the OTA, i could not flash the XT1033 firmware. So this is what I did:

That's a nice way to convert I didn't think it could be done this way.... Cool bro
dual sim will work with this method right?
can you give feedback, is it stable enough to be used daily? have you encountered any bugs or features that doest work? force close?
im thinking jumping to 5.01 but need some idea of how stable it is as i dont have a spare phone at the moment if it fail or got bricked
thankyou !!!
No Network
Hey
I still don't see any network on my phone.
This is after I flashed the modem files
Any fix ? Thanks
For me GPE 4.4.4 doesn't boot anymore, because of the new bootloader I assume. GPE 5.0.1 also didn't boot. Only Motorola Firmware booted successfully. Do you know what I can do about that?
This works whit the xt1034 ?

I am really sorry but i missed an important step in the OP (i realised it right away but my mom wouldnt allow me to touch my PC before i finished my homework :| )
Once you flash GPE 4.4.4 with the original modems, flash the OTA and after that reboot to bootloader and AFTER that flash the modems of the phone model you have. When you boot into lollipop it will say that it will take around 5 minutes to find network and wait patiently until it is done.

Make sure you follow step 2.1. And make sure you used thw links i provided in the OP. GPE 4.4.4 boots just fine for the rest of us. (Sans the screen flickering which is fixed after a screen unlock)
Hi,
I'm stuck on step 3 (can't adb sideload the ota). I can't boot to recovery - just a picture of android with the ! (red) sign.
GPE 4.4.4 is working just fine (with network too).
Thank you!

I for got to mention in the OP, you are supposed to press volume up and power button simultaneously when that logo comes for 7 seconds and then release it.
It just reboots the system when I press volume up and power button when that logo shows up.
Thanks
EDIT: Got it to work! Just have to precise!

As far as I can tell the difference is leaving bootloader (which fails to flash anyway) and GPT from the retail Firmware. I flashed the whole GPE before which resulted in being stuck at bootlogo

Yep. The old partirion tables are incompatible with the new bootloader apparantly.
Can somebody confirm if this works for XT1034 (Retail Canada/US AWS)?
Well it Works but i dont have any network I flashed my modems from the original firmware of the xt1034.
Any Help ?

[Guide] [Unbrick] Moto G XT1033 on Android 5.0 Lollipop [Brazilian Update]

First of all don't panic. There is a solution for your soft bricked moto
NOTE- This method is used for soft bricked moto g.
Soft Brick- When your device is in a bootloop and it can boot into bootloader or fastboot.
Hard Brick- When your device is complete gone and it doesn't even boots.
Now flash the Brazilian Kitkat 4.4.4 using this way :-
NOTE- Dont flash or restore your previous backup of 4.4.2! It will brick your device!
Brazilian kitkat 4.4.4 link- http://www.mediafire.com/download/5...4_KXB21.14-L1.40_38_cid12_CFC_1FF_SVC.xml.zip
Download mfastboot - https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4PT9WP-u_z9NXRBWF9EV2lGcWs/edit
Extract mfastboot and the brazilian 4.4.4 in the same folder and open command prompt in that folder. ( press ctrl+shift+right click- open command line here)
Connect your moto g to pc in fastboot mode.
In the command prompt flash 4.4.4 using the following commands :-
mfastboot flash boot boot.img
mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.0
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.1
mfastboot flash system system.img_sparsechunk.2
mfastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
mfastboot erase modemst1
mfastboot erase modemst2
mfastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
mfastboot erase cache
mfastboot erase userdata
mfastboot reboot
Remember- Flash using the following commands only as they have skipped bootloader and partition table file of kitkat or you would HARD-BRICK your device.
Now let it boot. The screen would be flickering after the boot. Dont panic . Now after the boot has finished. Transfer moto g brazilian update to your phone and reboot into recovery. Place in on the root of your sdcard.
Link - http://www.mediafire.com/download/w...sion.210.12.40.falcon_umtsds.Brasil.en.BR.zip
Now reboot into recovery and apply update from sdcard. Wait for 10-15 mins.
Congratulations! You have unbricked your moto g!! :highfive:
If i helped you. Please be Kind Enough to press the Thanks Button. Not just say thanks press thanks.

XT1033 still bricked
Hi
I've got a rooted and unlocked XT1033 (brazilian retail), and after tryed lollipop for a few days (5.0) I decided to get back to 4.4.4 using XT1033_RETAIL-BR-DS_4.4.4_KXB21.14-L1.40-1_1_cid12_CFC_1FF.xml. The first problem was in gpt.bin, it shows FAILED, saying couldn't access DATA, and the same thing happens with motoboot.bin. Everthing gone ok until I tryed to boot the phone, it got stucked in "Warning Bootloader Unlocked" message.
I've tried everthig again, I change the gpt.bin with the one from lollipop (Blur_Version.210.12.40.falcon_umtsds.Brasil.en.BR) and it works, but motoboot still gives the FAILED message and the xt1033 doesn't work. I've tried adb push/fastboot misc, cwm and philz touch and, with this one, I noticed that the sdcard doesn't mount (perhaps the reason why the "data error" had appeared the first time.
I've tried everthing I know, except from a fresh lollipop ROM (not update) simply because I couldn't find one.

First of all you can't downgrade at this stage from lollipop to kitkat. As lollipop has changed and upgraded partition table and bootloader. That is why it is said when downgrading flash everything except gpt.bin and motoboot.bin ( i don't remember exactly the names of these two ). Now what is your current android version? If you can access bootloader try downgrading using this method and than try again to upgrade.

Flash asian kitkat 4.4.4 using my guide than flash brazilian kitkat 4.4.4 and than update. You have interrupted both firmwares of brazil. Asian ones have different system files. So they would revert you back to original and than when you would install brazil it would fix the error. Try it. And remember do all the flashing by my method in the guide because your bootloader is still of lollipop.

My moto g dual sim (asia version) was on 5.0.1 Brazilian version(OTA). I downgraded to Brazilian kitkat 4.4.4 rom without flashing gpt.bin and motoboot.img. Since then it is stuck on WARNING BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED screen and its behaving same as yours. TWPR and CWM are unable to mount the /data and /system.
Did you solve your problem .please reply...
Can I use this guide to revert to 4.4.4 Brazilian from 5.0 Brazilian? And then go to 4.4.4 Asian? Im on Brazilian 5.0 lolipop and wish to go back to 4.4.4 Asian.

My XT1033 Dual Sim Brazilian was in 4.4.4.
I updated to 5.0.2 via OTA official by the device itself.
But I found the slower Lollipop and would like to downgrade.
I never did bootloader unlock.
This method serves for the Moto G XT1033 Dual Sim Brazil Retail?

Restore Kitkat from lollipop for Moto g 1st Gen
I have few doubts after restoring to the Kitkat from lollipop,
1. what happens to the data. Means the data will be lost or the will be there in the mobile ? Data like photos, contacts, messages, apps, music etc
2. After downgrading, in future shall i get the updates or not?
3. If some features in lollipop are improved, then can i able to update my mobile to the latest version of android(like lollipop etc.)
4. what happens to the warranty that is given by motorola?
Please let me know about these and it is more helpful to me.
Thanks.

thank you man, I raised my moto G :fingers-crossed:
I tried to downgrade from 5.0.2 but I gave also the two additional commands, therefore I bricked the device.

Tried to flash again the 5.0.2 (BR version), but no luck. The phone remains in the unlocked bootloader screen.
I can throw away the phone? :crying:
