Could you provide more information... can you go into your About Phone and post what it says.
Baseband... MDL, MF3, MK2?
If your on MDL / MF3 your want to start at this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314494
If your on MK2 your want to start at the link @HORiZUN posted above in his post.

@NighthawkXL, that root method works for all current firmware versions of the S4.

I did the same thing. SafeRoot is basically a one click root, no terminal commands, no exfat. So much easier.

[Q] New S4, Tried to Root, Bricked, Have New 1

I'm looking for re-inforcement here:
After MUCH reading, searching here and the net, I tried Motochopper, which failed, then went to CF-Root, these very shaky old hands instead of clicking on the file for the L720, clicked on the file for 900.
Bricked it.
Sprint gave me a new one (didn't even have it a day), reinstalled FoxFi and can tether USB/Bluetooth, but not WiFi which I need for the Tablet.
Now I'm gun shy.
It would seem that there are 10-15 methods, but CF-Root seems the best and NOW I have the file for the L720.
I've an S4,
Software: L720VPUAMF9
Build: JD939.L720VPAMDL
S/W Boot Status: Samsung
Kernel: 2.4.0-529760 - Dated 4.27.2013
Can someone reinforce which method is the least prone to problems? I'm not that interested in flashing ROM's, just want the WiFi Tether.
Thanks in advance and for those who feel the need to tell me search/been discussed/look etc.,I have A LOT.

Didn't see it the sticky, probably bleary.
So CF-Root (with the PROPER files seems to be the way to go.
Thanks for the reply, it's a bit different then a pad, if you screw up the pad, your not out your only phone - just a pad (BUT not to downplay the cost).

I'd just Odin a rooted rom... it's way easier than using a root method, and as a bonus, you'll get familiar with the most powerful recovery method for your phone! It'll even fix most bricks!

I thought about that, but I'm relatively contented with the stock software/firmware. If there were a simple ROM, I might do it. I like the idea of - maybe- TWRP - but really only need/want to tether WiFi and add a firewall.
What'dya think?
AND why would it be easier?

It is an MDL but I didn't see a different file for the 720, just the 900 if it's a MDL or MF9 (foreign, I believe)?
Here is your answer

Not sure if you have ventured out to try it again, but if not you'll find all your answers here.

Just do the OTA updates on your phone. Should be two of them at this point, one to MDL, then when it is done to MF9. After you see MF9, do CF autoroot. Then install TWRP as your recovery, followed by the HotSpot. Just do what the videos show and you'll be fine.
I think I did exactly what you did. I got my new phone and tried to install the HotSpot while on MDC (whatever original version was), after doing CF autoroot. Failed to read the part about HotSpot being specifically for MF9. Used Odin to reverse back to stock Rom and Recovery and ten followed steps I outlined from there. Phone is working awesome and WiFi is best I've seen. Barely uses battery.
I used the qbking77 videos from youtubes and was rooted with twrp recovery in 5 minutes tops it's the best way to do anything. To see it get done step by step is the best way for me.
For wifi tether several roms got it built in already.

[Q] root for latest android 4.3 update?

I recently received the ota 4.3 update for my at&t gs4, but I've been dying to try cyanogen mod on my phone or at least be able to remove a little bloatware. Could anyone point me to a tutorial somewhere to root this thing if it's possible yet? I do have a little experience with flashing roms and rooting with my old samsung replenish, but only with odin... thanks.
-EDIT Also is kingo really malware like many people on xda say? And does kingo work with the new MJ9 build for AT&T's S4?
If you have a little experience flashing Roms than you'll be experienced in the art of Google search. There are many threads about this already
Use this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531704
Works the same for att even though its for verizon. Same root method but beware it could add malicious stuff to your phone and computer. Do a little researching first before you do anything. Good luck

Thanks for the link to the tutorial. I've been looking stuff up about vroot and apparently it contains some sort of trojan... I also read a comment on YouTube where someone with the at&t MJ9 build had success with it but what are the risks other than bricking?

[Q] AT&T Galaxy S4 4.3 Build Ending with MK2

Hi there,
Sorry, I am new to XDA.
Is there a root available for AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 i337 which have been upgraded to 4.3 OTA. The build number ends with MK2 ?
I have looked at other threads but can't seem to find one of those straight forward tutorials for 4.3
Can anyone guide me in the right direction. Thanks.

somone can correct me if i'm wrong, but i dont think there is a safe way to do it right now. There is only vroot kingo, which are both unsafe as one pulls your binaries from your computer and the other pulls your IMEI and sends it to the china server.

Yes there is. I just Rooted mine yesterday. Go to kingoapp.com and download ver. 1.1.5.1792. I had to run through it twice, but now I can utilize the apps I couldn't before, like SuperUser & AdBlock.

So if i root with kingo will i be able to flash a rom? or does at&t have a locked bootloader?

Please follow this link. Kingo, vroot etc. aren't worth the worry. This method is fast and efficient. Anyone who tells you root isn't worth it doesn't know what they are talking about. At the very least you can delete the bloatware!

Edit, look in the general forum and read up on mk2 and nb1. You can get a rooted nb1 rom on your phone with safestrap. But do some homework before you decide doing it.
