I9500 Wi-Fi Connection Issues. .. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone,
Recently (for the past 1 week or so)... I am having serious connection issues with my wi-fi. I cant really say that its an issue with my ISP. All the other devices like PS3, laptop work fine.
Problem is.. when I connect to my wi-fi, the connection stays strong for a a while then browsing, playing games, Facebook just doesn't seem to connect. The Internet connection just dies. I checked the wi-fi settings, it says connection is too weak to use!
It is happening soon after I had the last system update. Can't say if its to blame. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe you should try to uncheck from the Advance Wifi Setting the Avoid poor connection option.

Hmm... could not find that setting anywhere.

This may not work, but maybe try a static IP rather than a DHCP-allocated one.
Edit - Yep, you will need to 'forget' the connection & re-add it in order to set a static IP.

Well I tried the static option. But with that the connect button is grayed out.

Search again, because it's your solution. It is a new feature from 4.3. Maybe with different name because our language. It is inside wifi, advanced. If it detects wifi data connection is poor (don't confuse with wifi signal, is different but related), it automatically switch the connection from wifi to 3g/4g to prevent disconnections from the world...

A screenshot will not help you, first because I have it in spanish, second bercause you need to know the route to get that option better than to see it. I will try to translate the name of the option but not 100% sure you will find it as is:
settings->wifi->push left button (menu)->choose "Advanced" on the pop-uped menu->6th option from top says "Automatic network switching (Switch automatically between wifi networks and mobile networks)": uncheck it.

[Q] Nexus 4 Wi-Fi issues.

First - Hi all, long time reader but this is the first time I've needed to start a thread - so sorry about my first post being a problem/Q!
I've not had my Nexus 4 long, but have got some pretty annoying Wi-Fi issues. I've searched for answers but it seems that people have different Wi-Fi problems and I just wanted to see whether my issue was a common one and, if so, is there a fix on the horizon?
My issue is that I can connect to some routers but not to others (work, home, most open networks)... when I connect it simply says "saved, secured with WPA/WPA2" but wont then connect.
Phones running stock 4.2.1 with franco kernel r28 and the things I have tried are:
Resetting routers
Assigning static IP address
Wi-Fi direct from my Nexus 7
Cleared cache from recovery
changed the Wi-Fi band from 'Auto' to 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz
Flashed new kernel
Very frustrating and because of my signal the lack of Wi-Fi has made me go back to my old phone while I wait for a fix... which connects perfectly to the networks (S3 running CM 10.1)
Is this a 4.2.1 issue - as seems to be the consensus with other Wi-Fi issues or possibly a hardware issue?
Thanks for any info!
There's one fix you've not tried which might work for you (it didn't for me). You would have to be rooted though, which is going to system/etc/dhcpcd and changing the permission on dhcpcd-run-hooks to read and execute from "others". This help some people out but turns out for me that my router isn't compatible with my phone. (DSL-2780).
I've noticed that some of the mobile devices(eg iPhone 3gs, SGS2) are quite sensitive to wireless channel which your router/ap broadcast on.
Try manually switch to channel 6 or 8 that solved my issue - I don't believe in incompatible routers usually problems are related to config.
It is more complicated with an access to the public WiFi as you can not modify the setup.

Just to update.
I've now tried this and still can't connect to the affected Wi-Fi networks, probably going to have to wait for 4.2.2 to see if that fixes it...
I had troubles connecting to my wifi network here in my house, which worked pretty good with my galaxy nexus, what i did and worked was deactivating the option "avoid poor connections" in wifi advanced settings, you should give this a try
Fixed it for me

I too have wifi issues with my N4. We have several phones at home - an HTC Aria and believe it or not the SGS1, SGS2 and SGS3!
All of them connect with no problems. My brand new N4 will see the router but refuses to connect until I toggle wifi on/of serveral times in succession, sometimes 6-8 times!
I have avoid poor wifi disabled but it does not help
I really hope El Goog fixes this asap as it is very frustrating.
I've had this issue forever. Android phones hate low or overcrowded signal. Though my nexus 7 always works fine. Makes me think it is the lack of WiFi antenna strength

How to forbid wifi changing?

Hi all,
My phone's wifi keeps changing the AP to another one that I have connected, these two APs are all in my room, so the signal strength is same. How could I prevent that? I need the access point I deserved, not itself change to another I previously connected.
Thanks!

Not sure what you mean exactly as you seem to have be missing words(or using the wrong word) in your sentences, but I think that you should go to wifi settings, click the one you don't want it to connect to anymore, and hit Forget.
Press on the SSID you don't want and press forget. Keep the one you want connected.
almost the same problem, but in my situation is 2.4/5G band from same AP i want to use 5G but the phone always jump to 2.4G one after some time.

I have a similar question. I have both my university's wi-fi and home wi-fi stored to my phone's memory. The university wi-fi shows still a signal on my flat occassionally and my phone connects to it automatically. Is there a way (without third party app) to tell my phone that I prefer using my home wifi over my university wifi?

An interesting read.
Maomao you can set that to the one you want. In WiFi settings, menu then advanced.

[Q] Forgets wifi networks?

I have a new AT&T Galaxy S4. It's not rooted or anything. It's stock.
I connect to my home Wifi in the evening. During the day at work, I turn off Wifi and use LTE. When I get home and I turn Wifi back on, it has forgotten my Wifi network. This is without restarting the phone or anything.
Has anyone else noticed this? I have never had this issue on an Android phone.

I'm just toggling it using the toggle in the notification shade.
I have also noticed that the list of Wifi networks is huge, including Wifi networks that are not even in range and it doesn't seem to be prioritizing the ones that have the strongest signal. I manually created a wifi network with the info for my router and have toggled it off and on a few times and it's connecting automatically, but I shouldn't have had to do this.

The "List" of wifi networks that are huge are networks you HAVE connected too in the past...
Say you come to my house and Connect to my Network. You Come back home your still gonna see my network in that list, as you had connected to it before... its like that with EVERY phone and device that connects to wifi. If you want them gone just click on them and select forget.

Did you log into a Google Account you have used Previously on another phone? If you did NOT uncheck the box when signing into google it will sometimes load the networks you had from an older phone. If not then your phone is NOT NEW
It's definitely new. It came out of a sealed box. I did restore an old account. Thing is, I can't "forget" any of those networks. It's not an option.

thats very odd you might just need to reform a factory reset.
new S4 forgetting wifi networks
Having the same issue here, occasionally I will walk into the house or the office to find that the S4 has forgotten the network key and I have to type it in again manually.
I leave wifi turned pretty much all the time and when it's working right it logs on to which ever router is in range. Unfortunately most of the time it's not working right & I'm doing a lot of typing.
Have done a factory reset with no effect.
Any thoughts would be VERY welcome.

Give a try to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51180156&postcount=2
This method works with my I337 NI1 Unlocked Rooted. I uses ES Explorer with Root Explorer enabled.
I went to the "system " folder in the device, scrolled down until I found "build prop" then edited using ES Explorer Note Editor.
Greatly appreciated and high credit to dajumper's work !!

I would hope most people would have tried that long before coming to the forum to complain about the issue.
The issue is WiFI closing & not auto signing back in whether mobile data is on or not.
It's simple option is in settings wifi
Yes the switch is simple but has nothing to do with the "closing WiFi" issue some are experiencing.
BUT I DO NOT KNOW Enabling this option AS MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE FOLLOWING HAVE SOLVED MY GUIDE

unchecking this doesnt do nothing....im sitting across from my router and its telling me my signal is weak.
Browsing on vzw 4g lte is faster than my 50mb comcast wifi connection? lol if i browse with wifi its a slow lag.
Same for me. Moreover, with the new firmware, if it loose the connection while the option is unticked, it says that it will be re-ticked automatically...
This WiFi bug is really annoying.
My phone has stopped dropping the connection & is behaving well. But I have no idea what solved it. I factory reset router & phone. But it made little difference but after a day it's behaving perfectly & it's currently on my wifi & has not dropped for 12 hrs & no more constant pop up messages.
I have no idea what cured it. But one thing I did last night was went to play store & updated every app on the phone.... maybe there was a conflict in one of those apps.. that's all I can think. I left "adblock" off this time as that routes wifi data but I'd removed that several days ago.

I'm curious what Access Point you are using and how old it is? Are there firmware updates for it that you have not applied?
I've read somewhere that cancel all existing WiFi connections and make them as new (with the new firmware), could be of help. I'll give it a try.

I've tried all the solutions on here, and nothing works. Very poor samsung for such an expensive device. If a £30 roku box can have perfect wifi why can't a £600 device
I must admit that wifi performance is quite poor for the moment.

You can probably find what it does on the Internet (Google), but it doesn't truly help. My guess is that these performance issues are router dependant. I'm waiting to get my hands on the new Asus RT-AC68U router to upgrade my yesteryear 300 mb/s router. In fact I just ordered it, it will arrive tomorrow. Will post here to let people know if it helped...

Well I was right, my shaky Wifi connection using my Sitecom WL-351 router is a thing of the past. Both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections through my brand new Asus RT68AC router work excellently!!
What this very probably means is that the Note 3 uses a Wifi chipset that doesn't work all that well with certain other (older model?) router chipsets. The Asus I bought to test this is quite expensive, but I am sure a regular router can work well given it is compatible. What needs to be done is verify (through a Poll or by researching known chipset incompatibility problems) what chipsets and/or routers / brands work well. Unless you expect Samsung to fix this in software, which often is impossible - unless Samsung can force an update of the chipset firmware.

Unfortunately Brand names don't mean compatibility since various models use varying router chipsets.

Wi-Fi taking EXTREMELY long time to connect

It seems my note use quite long time (apparently 1 min) to connect to a Wi-Fi. I try several networks with the same result. My Z2 and s4 connects straight away. Anybody else have this problem?
Edit: After several tests I can say that the average connection time (from I turn wi-fi on and until connection is established) is 25 seconds!!!! My Z2 is 5 sec. and my Z2 tablet is 7 sec. What are your times?
Tested on 3 different wi-fi networks today and still all taking long time for connecting
Have not heard of this problem. Try resetting the phone and nothing is solved, then might be hardware defect. Use warranty or find a way to get a replacement would be my best guess.
I reset the phone - and I try to time how long time for connecting to the wi-fi (only have 3 wi-fi networks in range) It take 25-30 sek to connect - is this normal? Every time I turn on wi-fi the box with networks available come in.... Everybody get this?
This box I get everything I turn on wi-fi. Is this normal?

I think it depends on the hotspot you're connecting to. It's instant at home because it's a personal network, while in a university it's a more complicated structure with thousands of users connected at the same time. So I don't think there's anything wrong with your phone, it's more the networks you're connecting to. You other phones may connect quicker due to compatibility between modem and router.

It's probably a matter of compatibility between the Note 4 modem and your router. So long as it connects and the speeds are the expected, you have nothing to worry about.

Thanks - but I already tried to turn off and on the router.
After a bit more testing I found that it is actually the "start up" time for the wi-fi that's taking time - and not the connection time. If I change wi-fi network while the WiFi is on I nearly get instantly connection on all networks. So the question is if your start up time for WiFi also is 20 seconds???
I had this problem couple days ago. Restarted my phone and problem was gone.
Tried to change to a static IP Address - but nothing changes ?
