[Q] Galaxy S4 Broken LCD Screen (not the glass) - NEED DATA not screen fixed - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to do this?
Here's the thing... 1) The screen is total black... I can no longer even get a heptic response when trying to blindly unlock phone. 2) USB Debugging USED TO BE ON but when I connect via USB I only get that media player icon to show up in my computer. 3) ATT Warranty is trying to tell me they need the screen to be active or USB Debugging to be in order to access the internal memory. All I want to do is copy over the contents. Squaretrade already sent me the replacement. I don't care about repairing the hardware... just a way to salvage the data before I send the broken one back. Any help would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED>.. after this I will try to find a way to crack the new phone to make backups since that seems to be a major hangup of android, you need to hack the phone to backup the data.
Any questions, just ask. Thank you!

When I connect my new phone to my laptop I still get the Samsung Galaxy S4 media player popup but when I open the window, I get 2 folders: SD Card and Internal. When I go back to my old phone I open the media player and get NO FOLDERS. Now that said, I've removed the sim card and the external SD card so not sure if that would have any impact here.
I realize this may not be the best place for this but new membership has its limitations on postings.
Thanks again

Thanks for nothing guys. could have probably gotten a response faster if it wasn't for your STUPID rules limiting new members from posting in other locations other than Q&A. I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't get any replies mate. Because you have been posting in the wrong section!
Your device has a forum dedicated for it. That's where you would get faster answers.
Newbies are not considered idiots or strangers here, unless they start acting like one. Rules are meant to be followed, not to make your life miserable, but to make life easier for everyone else.

Please remember that the Galaxy S 4G is a three-year-old phone at this point and there isn't anywhere near the traffic in the section as there is with the "popular" phones. I don't think that it is the "STUPID rules" (as this is probably as good a section as any), but more that there are only a handful of people that hang out here, and irregularly at that. You asked a question that isn't one that most readers here have ever had to deal with, further reducing your chances of an immediate answer.
If you do intend to hang around XDA, I think it would help your reputation here to post how you resolved the problem, so that someone else in your situation can benefit from your knowledge.

Probably actually started working on following directions for the Galaxy S4 rather than directions for the Galaxy S 4G.

Thread has been reported (a while ago). Not sure why it has been moved yet.

Use a keyboard or recovery

I don't see where you said it was a Galaxy S 4G, but either way, here's what I know:
When you plug the phone into your PC, they folders that are missing on your old phone are not showing up because the phone is not unlocked (lockscreen). Android only allows file transfers over MTP if the phone is currently unlocked as a security measure.
There are two things I would try. First, if your lockscreen is a PIN code, you could try attaching a keyboard via USB-OTG and use it to unlock the phone by typing in the PIN and <Enter>. If you cannot do that, then I would recommend trying to boot into recovery using the hardware keys and use adb from there.
Good luck

You may not wanna hear this part, but you might have to do a hard reset...reason I say you might not wanna hear it is that you'd have to reinstall/resync all your stuff, and since you say that your comp. isn't recognizing the phone, backing up and resyncing would be a pain.
Hopefully someone would be able to tell you how to do it without a Hard Reset, but from what I read on the forum, that might be your only shot. Hope that helps, and hope someone can figure out a way to do it better.
Can you change the title of your post, please? My son just read it aloud as he was sitting here on the couch with me while I was checking out the forum.
...........
HAHAHAH, sorry
Changed
Language...
First off. Watch the language. You've been around long enough to know better...
You could install active sync on a friends computer and get your info off first. Then you would be free to hard reset the phone. You'll obviously need to remember your password. It wouldn't be very secure if you could hack around that now would it?
I'm using the desktop, but I can't access anything on the phone because the phone is locked a nd I can't access it. And it asks me to unlock via my phone.
Another problem is it will let me type in a passsword once, and then it will disregard everything else (you click unlock and it wont do anything)
Hmmm I'll install another ROM
Passwords are such a pain... People put them where they're not needed, and then they come back and bite you in the rearend. I was just trying to extract a package from an old kitchen I DLd months ago, but it was password protected..WHYYYYYYYY?
Before you password protect something ask yourself if it really needs it.
It's okay I've reflashed a new rom to it.
thanks anyway
you should not post random non-development questions in the development and hacking forum.....i mean seriously, why is this post here?....post in your phones forum.....
OK Take it easy on the language with your frustration.
Also, Yes this should not be in Dev and Hacking. More than likely belongs in your Phones Sub-forum General Section.
However your thread doesn't explicitly mention what phone you are using. That makes it difficult to help you out as well.
thanks for cleaning up up the language. problem solved thread closed.

[Q] event log showing when SD card removed?

I need to know if there is any record or event log kept in the phone as to when an SD card is removed or inserted, or when the phone is turned off, battery removed, etc., and if such a log exists, how to view it.
I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S / Sprint Epic 4G, firmware version 2.2.1
I've tried searching for "event log" to no avail, "SD card removed" mostly turns up people who are getting messages that their SD card is not there, etc. Not sure if there are better search terms to use to find the answer.
Long Story: My phone was stolen from my office, I sent several texts to it from other phones informing the person who had it that the phone had GPS tracking software enabled and I was recording everywhere the phone went (complete bluff). The next day, I was contacted by someone who was in possession of my phone, her story changed several times, from the person who stole it was a friend and felt bad and gave it to her to give to me, to she didn't know the person, to the person being her brother who found the phone in a 7/11 bathroom.
I find their frequent story changing very suspicious and suspect they are covering for the person who actually stole my phone, but I don't want to go to the police and press charges against someone who might just be a good Samaritan.
The phone was returned with the SD card removed. I suspect the theif thought it was a SIM card or something that could help locate or identify the phone and ditched it. Her "brother" told me he found the phone at 5:00, and is willing to say the same in a police report. I need to know if the SD card was removed from the phone before or after 5:00 before I decide to attempt to press charges against the people who returned the phone to me.
Sorry that happened. While I don't know the answer, the subject relates to a great free app I've put on my phone & is getting more popular called Android Lost. It helps track and remotely lock/wipe (including just the SD) and control the phone in lots of cool ways. Hoping it'll help other folks. The SD card use log though is not one of its features, so I'd be interested to hear if that's possible at all.

Thanks for the response! I actually found out about Android Lost while I was trying to figure out what I could do to find the phone, but it was too late. I was able to remote install it via the android market web page (I see that it is installed now that I have the phone back), but it seemed to require manual activation from the phone to work before I could do anything, so it was too late.
There was another app called Plan B that supposedly will work with a remote install even without any use of the phone, it did install but it never worked. Tried it on a friend's phone right in front of us and it didn't work on his either, so I can't recommend Plan B to anyone who comes across a similar problem in the future.
I guess the real lesson here is, install and register Android Lost before the phone is lost! Which I have now done.
Now my goal is to try to find out who in my office is a thief, but without screwing over someone who might potentially be a good Samaritan just returning my phone to me.

She was a woman with a 4 year old kid. The problem is that I don't know for sure if she is somehow involved with the person who stole the phone or not. I know she lied to me several times about how it was "found" as she says, but I want to be sure that the SD card was removed after she claims it was found before I go forward.

[q] need serious help quick with data recovery

my s4 lcd cracked on its own, no dropping, no misuse, and i didnt have a chance to back up my files/contacts. I recently switched to android after five years with iphone. With the iphone i could simply plug into my pc and transfer files to itunes with no real knowledge. I figured in this day and age and with the level of tech on the galaxy s4 I could do the same.
my problem is i have 8 years of contacts and a few months of photos, videos, etc. I do not wish to lose. If I had to prioritize, the contacts are definitely paramount as I have them no other place. I know, i know, stupid for assuming recovery would be as simple as plugging into my pc.
My problem lies in that I had a lockcode on my phone, did NOT enable developers options prior to it crashing, and have ZERO experience with "crm flashing, and mounting, etc, etc" and really have no clue what they even are. I can follow instructions and learn pretty quickly, but cant write code or anything like that if that is what is required.
Can anyone provide me with any help or suggestions? I am even willing to take it somewhere to have it recovered if thats an option. I really am desperate for help here and would appreciate anything. Thanks. YOu can message me here or email at [email protected].
Thank you all.
BTw, i downloaded an app called drfone which came up in a google search under "recover dead/broken s4 data:". Well, i dont know who actually took the time to write that post out but it has detailed instructions on how to recover the data from a dead or broken phone, but contradicts itself at every turn since you need access to the touchscreen on the phone itself. That poster must of left their logic button unchecked that day.

Samsung Galaxy S5 (Broken Screen - locked MicroSD card)

Good evening,
At first please don't call me dumb for not coming here earlier.
I'll try to explain.
For the past 2 days I've been reading posts, forums, websites, installed third party software and who knows what else and still I can't find an answer.
Massive headache for trying to find a solution but without any results. So I finally decided to speak with the experts (you guys), yes I know I probably wouldn't have this headache if I would came here earlier, I know, but I'm the sort of guy "If I don't know I'm able to learn" if that makes sense.
Right, going straight to the point my Samsung Galaxy S5 fell and the screen cracked, my issue now is I have photos etc in my MicroSD card that are extremely important for me and my family, the USB debugging is off and has a pattern to unlock it so, resuming, I can't see a way to get those photos back, hence why I came here. After these last days of reading etc best is "Just speak with professionals that know what they talk about".
On other matter, I have my old Samsung S3 which I'm trying to make it work as a replacement but it has the "black screen issue", which after I reset it, and reinstalled the OS from scratch using Odin, still keeps doing the same thing.
Does any of you guys know the solution regarding any of these issues?
What I tried so far:
Samsung Galaxy S5
- Advanced Recovery Data for Android
- Android Recovery Data
- Dr.Fone
- Dr. Fone Toolkit
- Using my mouse to try to unlock it (without seeing what I'm actually doing)
Samsung Galaxy S3
- Odin
- Installation of md5 file
- All the sequences of "Volume up/down, Home, Power"
Hope you guys can help me with this.
Thanks
This is actually 2 separate questions that I'll see if I can help you out with...

Without knowing which variant (SM-G900V, SM-G900F, etc...)...
I would like to know why you just don't replace the LCD Digitizer Screen.
New ones are (typically) between $15-$25 +/- (this price is based upon eBay and Amazon) and isn't really that difficult if you take a look at the following guide on how to do it.
Unless you're not tech savvy at all.. LOL !

Again... Without knowing which variant (SCH-I535, GT-I9300, SGH-T999, etc...)...
Your explanation is really vague because you had stated a blank/black screen (which indicates that it's dead) and then explained steps that would reflect otherwise.
I will need you to elaborate more for this device. Of course, without trying out for a best selling novel... LMAO!

Thanks for your reply.
S5 is a SM-G900F
I've seen those prices yes, BUT I don't want to ruin it since I never tried it before, and obviously my goal its not fixing it but trying to access my data on my MicroSD card.
But to be honest, good thought tho, since I'm not having luck with the S3 at all.
Thanks for the Guide tho, it looks pretty "dummies" proof lolololol
S3 is a GT-I9300
Probably I explained myself wrong, since English its not my frist language, still, when I say "the black screen issue" I mean, I turn it on, Samsung galaxy s3 logo shows up and....Black screen. In other words it turns itself off. I got a new battery and it wasn't that, I reseted, and nop wasn't that either, Safe mode etc and no result, installed .md5 through Odin and still no result and its not the screen since I tested too. Frustrating.
Any clues or ideas?
Thanks for the tips so far.

I need help accessing locked phone - 8 Pro

I have a OnePlus 8 Pro that i need to get in to. The phone is mine on my T-Mobile account, i bought it for my brother on his birthday.
2 days ago he committed suicide. No note No explanation nothing. He was the strongest person we all knew. Never showed any weakness.
Even his wife cant understand it. I need to be able to get into the phone. There has to be something in there that shed some light on WHY???
His wife, daughter and I NEED answers. I have a ton of experience rooting and modding phones but i don't know how to get past a lock screen without wiping the phone.
If anybody can help me out i would be forever grateful. I would even pay if that's necessary. I am in so much pain right now over this.

Sorry to hear this.
If the phones on Android 11 then theres no twrp so there no way to remove the passcode / pin as far as I'm aware.
Here's a guide explaining how to remove a passcode. However I think with an encrypted phone you won't be able to access files even via twrp.
https://forum-xda--developers-com.c...e-hacking/remove-lockscreen-recovery-t3530008
Data recovery companies may be able to help if it's really needed.
Don't advise them as to what's happened just the phone is yours and your brother was using it, don't tell them how important it is or the price may just go up.

I might go that route since there is nothing illegal that he was doing.
was just hoping to do it today as to get it done sooner.

As it's Android it'll be possible. But difficult without the right kit..
I'd clarify what the detective wants to see on the device and can you be present for the unlock.

As insensitive as this sounds, I am a homicide detective. If he had a fingerprint lock on the phone, you could use his physical fingerprint from his hand prior to burial to unlock the phone. We have used this method several times with success.
Regardless, my condolences to you and yours.

Yeah i was hoping to be able to do just this but since the family members are not very etch savvy, they power cycled the phone off and because of that the first unlock into the system has to be with the numeric password.
I rebuilt his laptop for him a couple months ago so i have the password to get into it. I'm hoping that he saved his email credentials in it. I know that after multiple attempts into android it allows you to change password through the email. This is the last thing i can think to do.
I reached out to OnePlus this morning and the woman who was answering my questions said she had no answers for me. she kept saying i could factory reset it through recovery mode. I already know that, i need the info on it. I'm thinking about reaching out to google also. Who knows they might help since the phone is in my name on my account.

Not yet. I had an appointment to day with the funeral home to get access to his body so we could use his fingerprint but the phone was turned off since his last login.
It now required the numeric password before logging in. I have one shot left that i can think of. If i can gain access to his email i might be able to reset the password that way.
Fingers crossed. It was so hard yesterday going to the funeral home. We all need answers

I saw that. unfortunately i don't have his email credentials for his Find My Device.
Also the sm card was removed my his wife before she gave it back to me unfortunately.
Although it does connect to my Wifi at home... I'm almost to the point of giving up.
I don't think we will ever know why he did what he did.
Thank you to everyone that jumped on this thread. I love this community.
I kinda don't buy the OP story but here is my take:
- Doesn't need a SIM to get/use Find my device working but does require Google account access which is recoverable easily.
- It's trivially easy to recover a Google account with the phone number of the deceased unless the person specifically removed those options and used for instance an authenticator app (of if you don't have the actual SIM or access to that phone number but that would be strange).
- If you cannot recover the account that way, you can still recover it using a legal path by providing the correct inheritance documents to Google (through a lawyer if required) which should pose no issue (again this should pose no issue and while it would take time, it would work).
- Whatsapp cloud backup (on Google drive) is enabled by default and if you're after that, it's probably gonna be trivially easy to restore said backups on any new phone by using the SIM card of the deceased. Unless the person specifically disabled this to prevent this.
You can most likely recover Whatsapp messages without even unlocking the phone. This whole process is actually not hard and requires no tech help and can be done through the legal processes.
Added to all this, I checked your history and saw that you requested help before unlocking a Pixel phone that magically came into your possession before. So it seems you have a pattern of coming into possession of locked phones that makes me very suspicious of your demand.
I'll report this thread and ask a mod to review it.
Sorry. I also have doubts any time I see a story here asking for help unlocking a phone. Always sounds suspicious, and furthermore where are the mods here? Aren't there rules that state no requests for help unlocking phones??
Here is the OPs other post:
" Junior Member11 postsThanks: 2
I have a 64gb Pixel 4 XL that i want to unlock and use on T-Mobile.
The phone was never actually on a Sprint account. It was never technically paid off by a consumer. Its also never been activated on the sprint network to my understanding. (Which are all required to have sprint send an unlock code)
It was given to me by a Sprint store manager when they had to clean out end of year inventory.
I'm trying to figure out if i can unlock it somehow without having to get sprint to send the unlock code.
I don't really want to go through the hassle of explaining to them how i got a hold of it when they look at it in the system.
Any help would be greatly appreciated"
@San Diego The moderators are here and monitoring the thread since it has been created. And these are the XDA Forum Rules to cross-check.
To ask for assistance is not against the rules, and if you read back in the thread quite a few legal possibilities have been given. They obviously didn't delivered the desired result. However, as soon as the discussion or advices deviate towards the obscure side or to paid unlock services this would be removed immediately.
If you check the thread, from which you quoted, you'll see that moderators were acive in it, too.
Stay safe and stay healthy!
