[Q] Upgrading from 4.2.2 to 4.4.2 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I'm planning on upgrading my Nexus 4 to KitKat.
Currently I'm using PA 3.69 (4.2.2) with Franco Kernel and CWM Recovery.
1. What files do I need to flash for the upgrade, possibly with links? (I'm going for Purity ROM)
2. In what order should I do the flashing process?
3. Should I upgrade CWM before flashing, and if yes, which is the latest version that supports 4.4 and how does upgrading work?
Thanks in advance

If you want to install stock KK, you can download the factory Occam images and install via fastboot.
If you want to install a custom rom, you may need to update your recovery to the latest version and flash a KK rom that includes an updated radio and boot img.

So you think I can:
1. Upgrade CWM to 6.0.4.5 here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2198942
2. Flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545838, since it includes Bootloader and Radio.
3. Flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2281607 (Purity ROM)
4. Flash any desired Kernel (e.g. Franco) and use Titanium backup to restore my apps?

U just have to download the Rom. Install it. Set it up. Then boot back into recovery and install the kernel
I don't think u have to update CWM. So just steps 3 and 4

I'm asking cause I am coming from 4.2.2 with old radio and bootloader and I want the most up-to-date ones.
And I am sure that just flashing the rom will cause problems... What do I need to wipe prior to flashing?

I checked the links. Your method seems to be OK.
As for wiping, you need to wipe data, cache and dalvik cache from the recovery when you flash the Purity Rom

Everything has worked flawlessly. Thanks!

If you are already running Android 4.3, you have the latest bootloader and radio installed. Make sure your battery is charged to at least 50%, perform a nandroid backup, and wipe cache and Dalvik cache. Next install ParanoidAndroid from the zip file, install the latest Gapps from the zip file, wipe cache and Dalvik cache, and reboot.
If you are not running Android 4.3, you should use Clockworkmod or TWRP to install the latest bootloader and radio from the zip files available from ParanoidAndroid before flashing the ParanoidAndroid ROM and Gapss.

That's right: The OTA installs the .84 radio and makoz20i bootloader, so you are ready to flash ParanoidAndroid 3.92 and Gapps for Android 4.3.
Thanks
Thank You :good::good:

Updating from rooted 4.3 to 4.4

I'm currently running an LS980 with a CM10.2 nightly with TWRP and either ZV8 or ZV7–they both have the same baseband? This was all the latest and greatest as of when I updated in December.
Now I'm trying to just to a decent CM11 or Pacman ROM, but I'm getting confused as I wade through disorganized threads with people with questions not related to my setup. There's a whole mess of downgrades and autorec and ioroot and other tools that I don't know if I need.
So I have CM10 and old TWRP, what do I need to do for a stable CM11?
Thanks a ton!
1. Download your rom and Gapps (usually provided on the rom thread)
2. Copy your rom and Gapps to your internal sd card (on your phone)
3. Boot into recovery
4. Wipe Data/Factory, wipe System, wipe dalvik cache
5. Install your rom first, then Gapps
6. Reboot
7. Profit !
As long as you stick with CM or other aosp-based roms, you're good to go. You don't need to do fancy things to have a working kitkat rom with root and recovery.
If you want a Stock KitKat rom, then you're going to need IOroot 2.5 to root your G2 and then use AutoRec (provided by cloudyfa) to get a working recovery.
That's it !
Edit: think about updating your recovery beforehand, it won't hurt and may save you from going back to square one

Any way to install stock KK or stock LP via a flash-able file through any recovery?

Hello guys.
This is my first thread on XDA and I am really excited about it.
My query is, can we flash any stock OS via a recovery.
For example I am a N900 user, installed stock KK via Odin, rooted and then installed CWM recovery. Then I installed Nandroid and created a full backup of my ROM(Stock KK with superuser and nothing else)
When I am using any other ROM like Pekaka 6 or Dr. Ketan's L23(with LP bootloader) and when I try to restore my backup via recovery or CWM it's not letting me to restore my backup.
And when I am using any KK based ROM like K14 or alba19986's Ultralite ROM then it's allowing me to restore my backup.

You replied to your question yourself.
Different bootloaders allow different Android versions. For KK ROM you need KK bootloader, for LP ROM you need LP bootloader. And different modems, as well.
And more importantly, KK and LP need different sizes of the system partition, and to change the size of the system partition, you need a .pit file for that. If you want to play with .pit files, be prepared to read A LOT, because flashing a wrong .pit file (through Odin) may very well brick your device, and naturally, this is not a desired outcome.
And for switching between major Android versions, you need to read even more.
I'm about to pass out, so just read some threads here in the general Note 3 forum, they aren't hard to find.
Thank you so much, obelec for clearing my doubt in a beautiful way.
By the way what if I am on LP based ROMs and I am preforming full wipe, rebooting in download mode, installing KK bootloader and rebooting again in CWM then trying to restore the backup?
Thanks in advance.

From Kikat to nougat

I'm using kikat stock ROM.. I want to upgrade nougat custom ROM
Guide
First you have to update your mobile into lollipop after you can flash naugat rom.for naugat rom explanation is given by me in previous thread.see that.
Dont ever update your phone to lolipop, marshmallow or noughat from kitkat because all roms are laggy, buggy and battery draining. You wont get performance of stock kitkat in any other rom
@Deadman jo , To upgrade from Kitkat to Nougat, you'll first need to flash the KK2L_Base_Switcher.
Follow the below procedure to flash the new ROM. But, keep in mind you'll instead require this twrp_2.8.6.0 which is compatible with KK. And, after wiping the system, data, cache and dalvik in step 2, you'll need to first flash the KK2L zip, and then flash the Nougat rom and then gapps.

You don't need a computer for this.
Download KingRoot, Official TWRP, Rashr Flashing Tool, Any Custom ROM you want (better try any official 7.1.1 build, maybe AOSP Extended), Gapps according to the android version of the ROM you want to flash.
Install KingRoot open it and root your device. Then install Rashr. Give it the root permissions when it asks. Choose flash recovery from storage and choose the downloaded twrp. After its done. Choose boot to recovery.
Your phone will boot into TWRP. Select Backup and make a backup of the current ROM.
Now go to Wipe and choose System, Data, Cache, Dalvik.
Then, go to Install and select the ROM. When its done Install gapps without wiping anything.
Then Reboot your phone when all is done.

Nobody can help you if you don't provide the exact error. From my experience, I think you need to edit and remove the assert() line from the updater script. Alternatively, you can try this-
1. Make complete backup of you current ROM using TWRP.
2. Wipe Cache, Dalvik, System, Data partition.
3. Now instead of flashing the new stock ROM, go to advanced options and choose reboot to recovery.
4. Now, again your phone will not into recovery; and this time you should be able to flash the ROM.
