Time to dump it? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 General

Well guys, here I am with major thoughts of dumping my Note 3 and ending my short couple of month love affair with it.
I just feel that this device underachieved for me. My major beef with it is the poor wifi and overall network performance of the phone with no fix in sight. I can't stand the instability of the wifi performance. I also hate the speaker on this thing.
I also am disappointed with the community. I don't know what it is, but this community doesn't seem very active or have big numbers. I understand maybe a lot of people shy away because of the locked bootloader and such, but it just seems like low activity here.
With that being said, not all hope is lost. I still like this phone overall. I got in on the Cyber Monday deal for a $350 Moto X. I am making my decision easy for myself. If I like the Moto X, I am keeping it and dumping my Note 3. If I don't, I will keep my Note 3 for a little while longer.
And I understand that these phones are on opposite sides of the spectrum. But something intrigues me about the Moto X.
Ultimately I know that nobody probably cares. And that's cool, you can simply ignore this thread. But for anyone else, I would like to hear your thoughts.
Thanks!

I wouldn't put up with that, either. But my N3's WiFi and 4G connections have been excellent. Have you tried exchanging your phone?

I'd love to dump mine also .. having all the same issues in regards to the WiFi and network connectivity. Problem I have, I rooted mine and now I get that B/S "Custom" boot .. I've read through everything up here in regards to getting rid of that boot screen and so far NOTHING has worked. So right now, unless I find a way to hard brick my phone, I'm stuck with this damn thing.

What ROM are you using? My T-Mobile note 3 using att has excellent 4g LTE coverage but when I had T-Mobile coverage at first it sucked! I'm talking bad!! Barely any data connection if any and dropped a lot of calls. As far as WiFi I get excellent coverage also. Don't give up on your note 3 just yet. Just give up on t mobile!! If you use Chainfire's region unlock app from play store and switch to an att carrier, (like net 10 or Straight talk $45 a month) you'll be good to go.

Why not just sell it and get something else? The Note 3 is still going for decent money on Swappa and most people prefer to buy rooted phones on there.

Can you restore on mj5 after rooting with Kingo? I read you can use Kingos "unroot" then factory reset, but I dunno.

Probably best to use the the already established thread for this this type discussion. ..

[Q] Tmobile throttling

I have looked quite a bit an may just be overlooking this subject but can anyone give me advise on Tmobile throttling me. I had a HD2 and the last ROM radio kernel combo I had allowed me to go undetected with Tmobile. It showed I had used 0mb data. I switched to the S2 and I have now gone over my 5GB data limit. I just changed to the Darkside uncle2 with 3.0.8 kernal and blaze radio. The only unconfirmed fix for this I have seen was not 100% and had to be done when not in throttle status. I have 2.5 weeks left until I am reset but dont want to wait that long if I dont have to. Any incite would be helpful even a link to a different thread would be great.

I told them there was NO WAY I used up my five gigs and that it must be a flaw/glitch in the system. Obviously told them I'm a good customer and that being throttled is a game changer and that if they did not reset my data I would probably switch carriers the same day. I said i would also file a complaint with the BBB so that I didn't have to pay a cancellation fee(yes that works I and some friends have done it before ).
And voila they reset my data with hardly any trouble at all

This was the first thing I did and to my surprise they did nothing. I have been with them 10yrs and never had any CS problems until now. I complained that I couldn't buy a refurbished S2 for $99 (offer only avail to new customers) so they gave me a new one for free. LOL but you are right total game changer. Well I have been told that killing three processes while running the darkside rom will kill the data cap. Basically bandwidth usage is zero every month. What I want to know is what is going on that makes this work, and why it cant be done on the stock rooted ROM. I would love to learn the technical details behind why and how this works, I find this incredibly fascinating. It may just be my background as a seasoned Unix system admin, but I am completely obsessed with finding out what makes this hack work.
Also, you may enjoy reading my thread. It is not exactly related, but I do discuss some very relevant issues. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677490

I made a post about this last night. But on my 2x unlocked/rooted Nexus 4s I no longer get 4G with LTE enabled. Instead I see them switching 3g/h+ but have no/limited connectivity. And when they can connect out it is extremely slow.
Have tried multiple roms, multiple radios... different kernels. Also, have one Nexus that is bone stock, not even unlocked.rooted (so it never had lte enabled) and it is experiencing the same issue.
At the sametime I have a couple other phones on tmobile (htc one, note 2 and an s4) as well, and they are all fine.

[Q] All of us who are getting Verizon Note 3 at launch....

To insure our best chances of being able to root, what should we do? I've never rooted anything before so this will be my first time but I hear about alot of problems with Knox and what not. When I pick up my phone, should I not allow them to touch it or watch what they are doing so they can't install anything? What should I disable right when I get home? I'm a noob to this and I searched and didn't see anything,,atleast I don't think so.
They don't install anything on your phone at activation that will affect root capability... it's all in there already when the phone is loaded with verizon's version of touchwiz 4.3 ... don't worry about what you're doing with your phone as far as apps or whatever ... it won't hinder your ability to root if that becomes available to us... just chill and let the developers hack at this thing and see what they come up with... BUT ... don't hold your breath... our bootloader will be locked on verizon... that will make things impossible... dev's will gravitate towards the unlocked versions that are easier/possible to work on... and we will be left behind unless some weird exploit is stumbled upon... learn to love your stock device when you're on verizon... it's less stressfulness
I would not take any updates if they are pushed out immediately after launch.

When wouldn't we get root with a locked bootloader? And devs on Verizon aren't just going to switch over to another carrier for a phone. Have you checked out some of the crazy stuff they've been able to accomplish on Motorola phones? Or safestrap for the locked bootloader s4? Well be totally fine. I'd be surprised if we didn't have root on launch day.

[Q] Signal/Reception issues on MJ7

I live in the sticks and have never had very good reception on Verizon, but always have had workable voice connections and generally could at least get 1x data connections, 3g about half the time. Most of my previous phones have been Motorola but I went to the Note 2 last and it seemed to work just as good as the Motos.
With the Note 3, I can rarely even get a decent voice signal (couldn't even make a call last night, picked up my wife's Note 2 and it worked fine) and data is pretty much non-existent. The phone seems to work fine as long as I'm in 4g coverage, which is most of my day, but not so much at home.
Has anyone else experienced this or have a similar situation to mine where they do not have a problem?
I ask because I paid full price for this phone and only have a few more days to return it. If it's defective hardware, I'll just exchange it, but if this is a real problem with the phone then I may have to look at a different I really like the N3, but if it's not going to work as intended, I can't justify keeping it.
BTW: I am rooted (kingo) with SS, Xposed and Wanam installed, but still OEM stock otherwise.
I would appreciate any thoughts.
reception
I also have mj7 signal issues I think the best thing to do is switch modems back to mj6
The easiest thing to try is switch back to the old modems, here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2524572
If that doesn't improve things, it could very well be a hardware problem. In which case, I'd go back to complete stock and try to get it replaced.
Have the same issues however I am not rooted but after update to MJ7 I am having either no signal or bad signal everywhere in Tucson. Took it to Verizon today and they swapped the sim card to a new one. Problem continues until next software update.
Sent from my SM-N900V using xda app-developers app
I flashed back to the MI9 modem. I'll see how it does for a day or so. If it doesn't improve, I'm returning exchanging it.
I had my first one replaced because of poor reception. From forums and lots of reading online, it looks like there may have been a batch of devices with bad antennas
Third attempt...
Lost connection on first and second attempt to reply.
So far I see no difference going back to the MI9 modem. Still getting disconnects on cellular and wifi pretty consistently. Just like MJ7.

Yes, it seems to. My girlfriend still hasn't switched over to my old Note 2 - when she does I'll have a better side-by-side comparison.
I've done a side by side with my wife's N2 and there was no comparison. N2 allowed me to make a clear phone call and stay connected to wifi. From the exact same La-Z-Boy, the N3 had "No service" and constantly disconnects/reconnects to wifi. My MI9 experiment was a waste of time. I actually think that MJ7 performed a little better and it was bad.
There is definitely an antenna/radio problem with this phone. Funny thing is, I thought Samsung had stopped copying Apple, but evidently they had to try one more "innovation". #antennagate#
***DELETE***
Well, I exchanged my N3 today. We'll see if it was worth it at home tonight.
On a more positive note, rooting and updating to MJ7 on this one went way better than the last one. I Kingo'd it pretty much out of the box. Pulled the update.zip (in case anyone wants it). Installed Wanam and set status to "Official". Set SuperSU Survival Mode, then disabled SuperSU. Launched and installed the update. Rebooted and re-enabled SuperSU. Too smooth. All of that in about 20 minutes or less.
Reception with N3 is no better than it was with GS3, which is pretty poor. I still haven't updated to MJ7, so don’t know if it will improve things. Thought that Samsung wouldn't go backward antenna wise from Note 2, seems that was wrong.

Nope, it wasn't worth it. I was hoping that I had gotten a unit with a "worse than normal" antenna, but the new one is just as bad. Oh well...

MJE Radio Problems

Hey everyone. I am stock everything, and my wife grabbed my phone and updated for me, you know, just to be nice.
Anyway, the update screwed my reception. I no longer get 4G at home, and otherwise it's pretty bad. I'm new to the device and haven't done much research yet, but I'm not new to the community. Anyone have a fix? I'm ok with rooting for a proper fix. I haven’t yet because I've been crazy busy with kids and work.
Thanks in advance

Sorry about the thread guys and gals. I'm trying to research things in between making dinner. Eating dinner, bathing my kids, and putting them to bed.
So I found out I can flash old modems over the new build (I think that's right, right?), so I'm looking up info on how to do exactly that, but if someone wants to post instructions, that would be awesome.
Thanks again.
Alright. So I flashed the MJ7 modem, and the results are the same. Poop.

reception has improved for me from mj7, however, i'm in florida... So I dunno... All depends on area and such.
I ended up taking the update, and used to get speeds between 35-50mbps here in Detroit (there's a Cell Tower less than 500 feet from my house), but since the update, my speeds have gone as high as 70mbps and never slower than 45mbps. Granted, I tested this early in the morning....need to test it when folks are up and traffic gets congested.

Maybe there's an outage by you if your getting the same results with different modems. I haven't had any radio issues with the new update. All else fails Odin back and see how it does.

I Odin'ed back last night, and the results are the same. It held 4G for a few minutes, then went right back to 3G. So far this morning, if I leave my phone on my desk in my office, it holds a single bar of 4G. Once I go to the living room, it drops to 3G. Like I said, prior to the update, I got nearly full signal. I hope it's an issue with Verizon, and that it's temporary.

Your phone will connect to the strongest signal.....so if the 3g is stronger than the 4G it will prefer that unless you force 4g. The bars represent the voice connection and are independent of the 3g/4g which represents the data. Voice wise could be a tower outage or the new radios just suck and same with data. Try rolling back to MJ7 and see if it's the same. I know you said your new so I'd recommend doing some reading on what the db levels represent and so forth.

I did roll back to MJ7 modem with no difference, but you can't roll back the firmware or you get a soft brick. I'm just new to this device, not hacking my phones. Been doing it since my G1
I'm chalking this up to either a Verizon problem, or a change in how the software interprets the signal and displays it. Either way, I'll probably just have to wait for a new update (hopefully KitKat) or end up using SS, rooting, and flashing a custom ROM. A few days time will hopefully help, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

I gotcha. ? I've seen some people say they have been able to roll back...never understood how some can't and some can. I'm currently running Clean Rom and I've had no issues

Yeah CleanROM is what I'm looking into currently. And also making sure my wife stays away from my phone haha.

Noticed my signal has gotten worse since the update as well. Was at our kids Christmas show last night sitting next to the wife and both on our phones, she on a Virgin Mobile Android on Sprints crap network and me on my N3 Verizon 'super phone'....and she had signal and I did not. NOT real happy bout that! Toggling airplane did nothing to help. It was gone. Hers....fine. And I'm paying twice what she is! If this keeps up, I'll have a Note 3 for sale soon.....
