Kernel and Source on the LG Site: https://www.lg.com/global/support/opensource/opensourceList?types=ALL&search=lgv510 (I have a mirror in case LG takes this down)

looks identical, i wonder why they would even make something like this. maybe they'll offer it cheaper than the original?

I've only really investigated Android tablets, not phones, so I'm confused as to what this means to us stock G-Pad owners. Will we be able to flash the kernel / ROM for the Google Play edition directly to our devices? And if so, would we presumably lose the LG features such as knock-on, etc. (I'm expecting we would)?

Yes, just like how the vanilla HTC One and the S4 were able to port the Google edition to the original devices we should be able to do the same as long as the hardware is identical. No word on knock on until we see the kernel and OS in live production or if someone can break it down and compare to ours

Understood, much thanks! Reading around a bit, it means we may actually have the best of all worlds here - a regularly updated tablet with Stock android or close to it, and possibly the cool features the manufacturers designed it with. AND and SD expansion. Awesome.
Mark <--- Glad to have snagged this one for $259!

Usually the source included isn't enough to actually do anything as most of it is proprietary and closed source. However, this looks like a lot more than what we got with the V500 source and might be because it's a GPE device. I'm not experienced in this kind of stuff but I'll see what I can do. I doubt I'll get it to build.

I'm stuck trying to get the toolchain. Ha! I haven't built a kernel in a year. I know I need to build a repo to git the binary, but I'm too lazy at the moment to go over it again. Here's the url for the toolchain I think we need:
https://android.googlesource.com/pl.../arm/arm-eabi-4.6/+/refs/heads/kitkat-release
Sorry guys, I'm just a little lacking in motivation right now. Here's a guide I wrote to build a kernel for another device:
http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...elopment/51856-how-compile-deploy-kernel.html

If only we could pull the image for this:

Oh whao, that was fix. It looks like the normal G Pad, with exception for the NFC. Afaik, that's a new feature or am I mistaken?

I think its a typo. I don't see any NFC in the kernel sauce.
Otherwise the hardware is pretty close to identical, but does have a different touchscreen.

Can you tell something about the screen differences from the kernel? Did the specific ID just change (could indicate a bug-fixed version) or is it a completely different panel?

ROM Request - Vanilla AOSP 2.1

I am not knowledgeable enough to do this myself, or I would. I would like to request a plain AOSP 2.1 build ROM for the CDMA Hero. I figure since the kernel source code is out and Android 2.1 source code is out, this one shouldn't be too difficult to achieve.
I'm not big on the extra apps in a ROM either. I'm talking almost barebones. I don't want Sense either...just a plain AOSP.
Anyone want that too? If so, add your comment here and let's see if you can get someone more skilled than me to do it.
I also realize that it does take time to make a ROM, so if this doesn't come to fruition I'm not going to get upset, but figured I have nothing to lose by asking.
Thanks
yeah would love 2.1
i love the bottom menus with the dots instead of drawer and new icons
i hope its like this onedaylol

A plain just from source build would be right up my alley as well.
I also would like. Anyone want to start a donation pot for the dev that does it? I would donate.
Me too. Just like the Nexus One, no Sprint-specific apps, but also no funny stuff like adding apps or changing colors. What is AOSP?

I usually hate posts like this, but the situation DEFININTELY called for it
Sweet, Advanced On-Board Signal Processor, got it.
Uh, that's a joke btw.
+1..... a fully functioning plain vanilla 2.1 ROM for my Hero!!!
This may take some time.. Although we have the kernel, from my understanding there is still some porting that needs to happen to the 2.1 code so that the AOSP will run on our phone with all the different hardware. HTC was right on time with this release i was two days away from ordering an n1 from google. guess ill stick around and learn as much as i can and see what happens
yes please. as plain as possible
You can use flipz 2.1 Rom, turn sense off, and that would be a 2.1 vanilla Rom ...... that is what I'm doing right now for the moment

Besides having the hero apks, does this ROM (when sense is turned off) look and act like the Nexus 1 ROM?
(I would try it for myself, but I don't wanna go through the hassle of wiping my device and restoring all the info/data)
Thanks for answering my question.
PS: I actually like Hero's Phone, Contacts and Calendar a lot more than stock.
Yeah, I would definitely be interested in this too. I just switched over from a Touch Pro a few weeks ago, and have been reading up on Hero ROMs, but none have really caught my attention too much yet. I'm not usually a fan of all the HTC goodies....
(Also, I'm a new poster here.. This seems like a better place for Hero stuff than where I was over at PPCgeeks)

The kernel source is out, yes, but for 2.1 to run at its best, it needs to be running 2.6.29 kernel version, which is not released (for our phone). I'm working on a port, but so far it doesn't boot )) and others may be in the process of doing the same.
There are other projects to get AOSP 2.0.1 and 2.1 on the phone, and those have been working with the 2.6.27 kernel, which is not going to run as well as intended. Of course all it'll take is replacing the kernel, hopefully, and I'm sure someone will make a breakthrough in porting the kernel soon

Well, as we haven't even gotten 2.3 on the captivate yet..it will probably be a while for 3.0..hopefully it doesn't just work on tablets.
Well I heard news that the Nexus and Desire got a port of honeycomb, but they're non functioning atm

Truthfully, I don't think that many developers truly tried to port 2.3 to us. Supercurio got that test demo out, but no one ever put out a legitimate ROM. And if we have to rely on Samsung... Well, lets just get used to having Froyo.
This just in: Cyanogenmod dropping development on CM7 for SGS.

No it's a work in progress. If it was ready believe me you would know.
I've been using it for less than a day, but no show stoppers if you know what you're doing. phone works, mms/sms work, wifi can cause kernel panics if it falls asleep (just set to never sleep)... you can thank atinm and the cmsgsteam for it, but CM7 is VERY MUCH SO on the way and in progress

also, I already see this as going to be my daily driver at this point. the only "problems" I've seen are listed above (oh and the camera doesn't work quite yet, can't actually snap photos, just FC's on trying... but barcode scanner works)

If anyone is prepared to do some work the rom is there. Just don't show up and ask how to install Linux, what is terminal etc. You need to be self sufficient, its not a simple cwm flash.

Official ICS Officially DeBlurred

Motorola ICS UI review: this isn't the Blur we used to know

I think yes. It's cheaper and easier to use the same code.
Consider we're talking about motorola. That UI is for OMAP devices and Atrix isn't equipped with OMAP. We'll see all together.
I doubt the UI will be different just because the processor is. With it so deblurred, you gotta wonder why they even bother redoing any part of it. They can just include the bloat they want as apps without messing with the framework. Maybe the carriers are insisting on crippling some features.
Code is written in high level programming language like C++.

Its the same case as why the Photon and Atrix got a different, uglier and sluggish Blur instead of the one that came with all the Motorola phones equipped with OMAP4 chips.
Heck, the ICS Blur we see on our Atrix might even be the original ugly Android4 blur that is available for download everywhere.

Agreed.
Heck the launcher on the initial Froyo builds was so much more faster!
And then the rest of the Motorola phones comes out, and guess what ? Atrix is suddenly sluggish? I mean seriously?
I actually complained about screen switching being TOO fast on the Froyo build lol... ooops.
GB update was weird for me, it worked GREAT for a long time, then it started getting buggy and sluggish, I factory reset it like 4 times with new blur accounts etc, and nothing helped, finally rom'd it the other day and couldn't be happier..
Got to figure out a solution for webtop though, I used that a LOT.

If reports are correct (that Webtop has been replaced with tablet mode plus some candy), then the only solution that is rational is to run a headless Linux disttro and RDC into it.
Even if all the bits of code needed to spin up X are opensource, it is going to be a huge pain for somebody to port it over to ICS. And some items (such as the kernel mod that mux's inputs to both X and 'droid) I do not beleive are avaiable.
Using an RDC aproach makes it is fairly easy to put a distro of your choice on the Atrix though, so that is a plus.
To me the question would be if I was to use a full screen RDC to an 'ux desktop, or just bring up a window to the app that I want. Really need to see how it all plays after we get the real Tegra drivers for ICS out.

Official or unofficial, all CM versions being ported to a new device goes through "buggy". That's why the current version is BETA.
LG has done a really bad job at Android 5.0. It almost looks exactly the same. CyanogenMod 12 will at least have Material Design so I'm looking forward to its release.

I don't see this happening. Any changes to the boot image would mean it needs to be re-Bumped, and relying on a third-party like this is a precedent that I don't think CyanogenMod will want to set.
Do any of you guys know of a TWRP themes thread somewhere in some forum? Somewhere we can get a nice compilation of the themes? I'd search the forum but I figured maybe someone has it bookmarked or something!
---------- Post added at 12:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:02 PM ----------
Also, has anybody heard if LG plans to update its stock apps to Material Design? All the stock apps on the L stock roms are just the same old crap.
PSA
Well this is a nice boost.
But big battery is BIG
The development has kicked in well and a big thanks to our devs/porters for that but I feel the lack of frequent updates/nightlies. I think we should invite Rom Cooks/Development teams (CM, Omni, MIUI, PA, PACMAN, etc.) to begin officially supporting our G3. The Bumping might be an extra load on them but am sure they would collect good donations from all of us once they start developing for us.
We have neither heard any news from them if they are considering to support G3 yet. I don't know if they know about bump or not or if they still think we have a locked bootloader with no workaround.(silly concern maybe, but am still concerned )
Damn that battery is big! We really need new development in the battery area. I don't like how every manufacturer is focusing on the thinness of the phones instead of having a slightly bigger battery.
Maybee someone know a good Kernel dev. for our G3! Would be good for our battery and performance?

How has LG done a bad job with android 5? Samsung has looked the same since they started making phones. HTC kept sense looking the same right up until blinkfeed and even then there was still the option to use the good old flip clock widget (which really just became flatter). I think they did a good job of keeping their individual look and feel while moving forward. The integration with the new O.S is done well and personally I think the new material design is not too attractive, but oh well...
I am impressed but still figuring lollipop out.

I don't get this. Wouldn't it be nice to have more support from Cyanogen core?
Maybe someone can take over porting CM12.1?
I don't get why are you opposing this.
Do you think the other devices need more help than ours?

Hmm
cm12.1 already exist and is fully working

Yes guys you two are enough for cm,
we also got alot of devs working for this device
Then please explain me why cm 12, 12.1 or other CM based roms are a Ram eating beasts compared to the stock? That's the only reason why I'm still using the stock rom, the multitasking is just better, because you have a lot more free RAM for apps. And when Motorola will finally release the 5.1 or 5.1.1 tt will be much better then custom roms for our device.

Motorola hack ?
Google aosp has the same ram management as cm12*
Anyway android free ram = wasted ram
Linux handle ram differently from windows

But still, It's interesting.. on my debloated stock rom the system is only taking around 110-130 MB of ram.
I don't know, but it would be nice to have a custom rom with the same amount of free ram like on stock.

Yeah it's true, but If the system is eating less RAM then I can run more apps I use simultaneously=better multitasking
I don't want to have free RAM, I want all the free ram to be taken by apps I'm using, not by the system.
Don't vote for a phone you can buy for less than $180usd.

my 2 cents : we should get all the help we can we have gr8 devs already but with even support greater things can come out from our community
What i would like to see with the cyanogenmod team for our Motot G is to work on the snapshot versions, so we can download a stable version of CM and not go through all the nightlies to get a version for every day use. And for this i think the current devs can manage and the available support can work on a project not supported so much.
Lol, I know what that poll was about. More info soon.
