USB Mount

Not sure what fixed it, but the CM on G1 allowed me to mount my SD using my car stereo's USB (JVC KW-AVX820). Native G1 and none of the 3 USB modes on the Vibrant work. Any idea what file system feature did that?

Same here. My Genesis Coupe keeps showing either 'Media Connection Error' or 'No Media Connected'. It even rebooted my nav/stereo this morning and then froze it on the FM screen with no audio. Had to turn the car off, then back on for it to be fine. Not sure why the Vibrant would have issues like that.
Actually, with my G1, I hadn't got USB Mount notifications for awhile. Other rom's however worked fine. My wife's MyTouch works no problem, so I know it shouldn't be the car.

I don't know anything about car computer usb, but I'll share one experience I had working with a copier at work: USB running in a mode that simulates a USB thumb drive works. USB running in a mode that shows a micro SD card READER (as opposed to a single solid-state unremoveable drive) does not. That discrepancy could be responsible for what you are experiencing.

Make sure after you select mass storage you then mount the usb (its a two step process)
But also, it still might fail as I've noticed when you do this the device is actually mounted as well (oh that glorious 16gb of onboard space!) so the stereo might not have any idea of where it should be looking.

You need to go into settings and enable USB debugging

[Q] Card Swipe via USB (not Square)

I'm working on a pilot program to run our point-of-sale software from a Xoom via Citrix Receiver. The software is running smoothly across Citrix and now we want to be able to swipe customer credit cards in person. I'm not looking for a Square-like management solution, because we're trying to use our own software and not go through a third party app.
For many years, MagTek has made USB credit card swipe readers that emulate a USB keyboard. If I plug one into a PC, I can swipe card data and the reader literally "keys" in the data. I have many of these in production and no drivers are ever needed.
My question is--with an OTG cable, could the USB swipe reader work on the Xoom? Obviously it wouldn't be pretty and I would have to rig up a folio case to contain the swipe dongle and USB cables... so if there are any other swipe readers that will work, I'm all ears.

Are you set on USB connectivity? You could certainly use an Audio Jack reader from Sage Payment Solutions to swipe cards in a fully encrypted fashion.

USB on Android is not a good solution as very very few devices (read that as basically none today) support USB Host mode. Your best bet is to use the Mic jack like square does...hell...use their reader and your own software and avoid the hardware costs.

Summary of limitations with Stock Firmware

Putting these out there so that dev's could address and all others should be aware of:
- No "USB Mass Storage" support. ICS out-of-the-box doesn't support this, however it can and has been added into ICS-based roms for other devices. Definitely possible to be addressed via software.
- Cannot move/install apps to the external microSD card. With ~4-5GB of available space on internal flash memory, this can become an issue for some.
- supports only microSD formatted in FAT32. Which effectively means if you have a video or other media file that is over 4gb in size, you cannot copy it onto the card. This is certainly a problem when you have HD quality movies you wish to play back on the device.
- wifi "can be" flaky. Many have experienced "low" wifi strength while only a few feet from their routers. Possibly could be improved through kernel driver updates, etc.
Please add on to this list as you come across limitations!

Most tablets now need 2A to charge, USB only provides 500ma. I don't think it works, it's not an ICS limitation.

thanks for the info. just assuming (more on hoping) it might also work while on power-on since charging via USB is working if the device is turned-off.

I found that if you use a rar. format you can break the file up into small file. which let you put it on the sd card and then extract the file and put it back together in the card. it may take longer doing that but it works.

Bluetooth issues... device tends to pair and connect, then randomly disconnect, say it's still paired, then constantly pop-up the "Pairing" dialog asking for the PIN number. Once this happens the device will not stay paired.
This is happening with my PLX Kiwi OBD 2 adapter in my car... happens to my friend on the stock original firmware (I'm on the updated version) we're both rooted.. this happened before rooting as well though.

UPDATE on BT!
I just called Samsung Mobile Support and let them know about my issue. I mentioned that the original and current firmware's both have this problem, the agent put me on hold for a few minutes and came back saying that they are aware of this issue and the next firmware update (OTA) should be resolving it!
Thank you Samsung for having great customer service (I was only on the phone with Samsung 12 minutes total, including the non-existent wait time!)

Did you test any of this for this tablet? Does it even apply to this tablet (you are referencing a different device)? USB OTG (aka Host Mode) is a combination of having the right hardware + the right modules compiled into the kernel.

I had the same problem along many others(on original firmware it wasn't even usable it rebooted constantly). I was trying to connect to one of this:

I ended up returning the device as I mainly needed it for that a the moment and as it crashed using the browser etc, but thinking of buying again.
Did they give you an ETA for the update? Or have you tried another ROM?

FAT32 has a single-file size limit of 4GB. Yes, you could use rar or any other archive format to break the original file into pieces, however for example, an HD .mkv video file can be well over 5GB (single file). You could possible copy 1 of those large files into the 'internal' memory if you had the space -- but defeats the whole purpose of having expandable storage.

i dunno whether the one i write here is considered as flaws or not...
i don't like the way this tab arrange its homescreen and apps cabinet...there are some spaces left and can't be filled...i hate this...

A new launcher will fix that problem for you. I use apex launcher.. but there's other alternatives out there as well.. like go launcher

I did ask for an ETA but unfortunately he said he didn't have one... he did say that it will be soon and to make sure my device is on wifi and ready for an update soon.. but I'm on a rooted stock firmware and froze the software updater lmao so that won't work... but I'll keep an eye out for am update and let everyone know. No I haven't tried any other ROMs yet as they all have some flaws that bother me... not too mention for my specific use I don't really need anything too fancy... just need BT for my PLX Kiwi OBD adapter for my cars diagnostics

It's still too early, but there are some ROMs actively being worked on (and I'm hoping we see official support for this tablet from CM soon). With the recent MacMall $219 flash sale on this (they must have sold thousands in one day), and attractive MSRP, there could be a lot of interest from major developers.

Ebay tells you how much have been sold. It wasn't 500ish last I saw shortly before it ended.

I purchased the Samsung OTG cable and plugged it in the port. The cable has a female connector on the other end. I plugged in a 32GB thumb drive and it read it right away. I plugged in a small harddrive and the tablet reported that a high power device was plugged in and would not work without additional power. I paid $8.00 for the cable on amazon.com.

Thanks for the info! Does a mouse/keyboard work with no issue? The USB stick -- did it auto-mount and what filesystem is it formatted with (ie FAT32)? -- I'm curious if for example a USB stick that is formatted in NTFS can be used..
On another note, this confirms that the device itself can handle USB OTG to some degree -- meaning the modules are in place in the stock kernel and the hardware itself is capable of putting out enough power to handle certain devices.

UG007 ii - rooted, running great

I got a UG007 ii from Amazon for $50. I ordered the original version UG007 but got the one with two microUSB ports, research shows it is the UG007 ii. Very lucky to get a free upgrade, but after reading some other forums also very lucky to not get a *clone*. After reading about clones, and ordering problems, I can report complete success and happiness.
Not many thorough guides and lots of random stabs at getting rooted. Some of the downloads set off my Avira anti virus which was bad, so anything not totally clean was deleted and not used.
DRIVERS: Getting the drivers to work on Window 7 x64bit took some searching and work. I was surprised that both microUSB ports will supply power to the UG007, but only the microUSB next to the microSD slot will work for adb. Also, there is an extra USB section in the settings that allows your device to communicate (at all) with the PC. Wrapping my head around the fact the UG007 ii device defaults to supporting multiple USB host ports, it makes sense there is a switch to reverse the defaults for connecting to a PC. Twisted brain stuff. LOL.
ROOT: Many various methods exist. I found only one root method that worked, and all others I tested failed. After the drivers are working, it is very easy to root using TPSarky-VonDroid-Root.zip. I really like this method installs SuperSU, and I updated it via the market afterwards. I verified root successfully, loaded busybox and terminal emulator via the marketplace.
RECOVERY: I update.zip installed a CWM recovery successfully. The xda member fun_ has this great post for RK3066 devices. Follow the links to CWM-based Recovery images for RK3066 devices and download the UG007_CWM.zip for Ugoos UG007. Aterwards just rename to update.zip and push to /sdcard and install.
During this whole process I used a USB keyboard with small touch pad for *mouse*. The CWM recovery only works with keyboard, but I could have used only a USB mouse on drivers and root setup, because the device has an onscreen keyboard.
Overall the device works great. There are some cons:
First: There appears to be no microphone nor record ability with the stock ROM. I tried lots of bluetooth headsets which play music and movies fine but the microphones failed. I ordered and will try an external USB soundcard dongle later.
Second: There is a security problem because the screen never locks nor sleeps, with one random exception (clicking on items in notifications). The workaround for security is a wonderful application "Smart Lock Free" and its widget to lock/unlock all with one click.
Nothing else really bothers me, so I must say this device is an exciting Android Stick Computer.

The above are just two vendor examples, looks exactly like mine. There are many other good vendors. The geekbuying.com guys are interesting because on their website they released a 4.2.2 ROM for this stick. There are also many bad vendors and clones which look different and are not UG007 ii. Your mileage may vary. Good luck.
UPDATE TWO: I have now tested three USB sound cards. The only working USB soundcard, that survives a reboot still working, is the Syba SD-CM-UAUD USB Stereo Audio Adapter, C-Media Chipset, RoHS. With this USB soundcard the audio input (microphone) and output (speakers) work with the UG007 ii. See further information in next post.

I added the USB sound card. Now I am able to use a microphone on the UG007 ii. Great.
The (semi) working device is Syba SD-CM-UAUD USB Stereo Audio Adapter, C-Media Chipset, RoHS The microphone input works, audio output not.
UPDATE: Finally got audio input and output working with this device. Basically, plug and play is not always a reliable method. Instead reboot with device connected and audio in & out works.
I also got another fancy USB sound card from Syba that does not work for input nor output. This one finally worked. This one did **not** work for me. I did little troubleshooting.
UPDATE: After further testing I found this device also works, but sometimes crashes on plug and play. When I reboot with device connected the audio in & out works, and subsequent plug and play works. Typical problems are caused by plug and play device with recorder application open or music player open, or switching devices with plug and play without rebooting.
So, with a microphone connected on the first, I decided to try VOIP programs again. After installing Groove IP, same as before it crashed when launched. However, Talkatone works. It is complicated to get it working. Here is what I did:
Installed Talkatone, In the settings it gives under the *Phone* tab, I selected Call Settings. I changed Start Call on "normal". It was set to "BlueTooth (when available)", but I could never get the microphone working, listening with bluetooth headset and microphone input to the USB sound card. Bluetooth was wierd because I was able to hear on the headset with setting "Bluetooth (when available)" but neither the bluetooth nor USB sound card microphone input worked. Bluetooth devices never show in the Android Sound settings.
Under Android Settings, Sound, Sound Devices Manager. With the above USB sound card connected the options are:
Talkatone working configuration:
Sound input devices: USB PnP Sound Device (***selected)
Sound output devices:
ROCKCHIP HDMI (***selected)
USB PnP Sound Device (not selected)
Note: I switched my audio OUT setting to HDMI and connected a speaker to the back of my HDMI monitor. You, like me, are probably now saying WTF. Yes? While the microphone is working on USB PnP Sound Device it seems the audio output does not work on either of my USB sound cards. However, with Talkatone setup Start Call on normal, the HDMI audio output works with the microphone input on USB PnP Sound Device. LOL
UPDATE: If you reboot with USB sound card connected you can use USB PnP Sound Device output. But, plug-n-play may kill your output until reboot with connected.
I run tests using Music player for audio output, and the Sound Recorder for input. The Sound Recorder application can be *found* on the stick computer in the /system/app folder. It is bundled with the device but I was unable to find a launch icon. Information on Sound Recorder is Version 4.1.1-eng.ant.20121212.085830 Once run, I can subsequently find & run again using search on "SoundRecorder". Also, in the Play market the Sound Recorder Shortcut by Kayan Nurav gives an icon as a fix to launch Sound Recorder.
Using these configurations I can successfully make Talkatone voice calls with the UG007 ii. My voice quality depends on microphone sensitivity. The sound out via HDMI to speakers sounds perfect.
There are still some annoyances. After reboot or re-plugging the USB sound card: if you want Rockchip HDMI output the Android settings need to be fixed (as shown above). I frequently test sound output using the music player and test input with sound recorder because of frequent sound input and/or output failures requiring me to reboot. Definitely a work in progress, yet interesting.

I tested a third USB sound card where audio input/microphone does *not* ever work. If you find some, please post further examples of working USB soundcards in this thread.

No, it does nothing with power plugged only. I must first plug HDMI and then power to get boot.

No. It does not power up when connected only to cable. But, if you turn off monitor and connect cable it does boot.
There is an old hack of putting resisters on DB15 video connectors and plugging into laptop external video ports. What this did was enable new screen resolutions on 1st generation netbook computers. It was something if done wrong could also ruin your video card. LOL
Thinking along the same lines there us surely some way to fake the HDMI monitor connection by hacking an HDMI plug.

CWM for Official UGOOS 4.2.2 firmware
Has anyone else upgraded to the latest official 4.2.2 firmware? I have and it's very good. Smoother, faster, and everything still works, of course. I also got it rooted using the original method for the original Android 4.1.1 firmware.
But I'm having issues with CWM. I installed the original UG007 CWM through the Rockchip flash tool (as opposed to the update.zip method b/c it doesn't work with 4.2.2 anymore) but I can't actually create any Nandroids inside CWM. Things aren't being mounted & recognized correctly.
Does anyone know of any updated CWM recovery for 4.2.2?

Instead of new comers squandering around looking for solutions to set up the nexus player for gaming and media streaming. Lets simplify things a bit to see what accessories to get and what software to use to get our nexus player to its maximum capability.
Lollirock 1.5 rom (OTG micro usb cable and a usb mouse or keyboard are required during first bootup. It will not detect nexus remote during first bootup)
Stick mount pro(Play Store) Make sure it's the pro version or else it won't work!-
- A must have for external storage. This app enables storage drives to mount into a specific location using symbolic link option which isn't included in the free version. By default, it will mount storage devices under sdcard/usb folder instead of usb:// mount location (apps like emulators or xbmc that uses file explore do not search to this location usb://)
- I have tested it on xbmc, my boy, fpse, and ppsspp.
Known issue: external storage formatted under ntfs will not mount properly. Files will not show up under mount folder.
I'm currently using exFAT format and it seem to work fine so far.
For those who uses stock Nexus Player rom, you have to download stick mount pro from a third party site since the license won't transfer(I'm assuming that you paid for it)
Sixaxis controller(Play Store)
- Can pair up to 2 controllers for two players games. There's also a setting to set dual shock 3 or 4 to run as native android controller, so you don't have to deal with mapping everything manually.
My suggestion
Accessories : Rii 8 wireless touchpad keyboard(Amazon) mini keypad with track pad and qwerty keyboard.

- It very important to choose the right otg micro usb cable because it can effect read/write speed for external storage drives, including low power consumption drives such as usb flash drives and sd cards. This hub can run with or without a secondary power source.
I thought something like a flash drive with a low power consumption didn't require a decent otg cable, but it does. I was testing a psp rom off my usb storage with a much simpler micro usb otg cable and the frame rate wasn't that great also the loading time. Transfer files were also very slow. So keep that in mind, make sure to get a decent micro usb otg hub or card reader. At least get one that you can supply power to from an outlet.
For those who are looking to run Amazon prime video, download Kodi (xbmc) and Amazon prime video add-on zip.
-Amazon instant video app is crappy on android to begin with compare to IOS version which has a more user friendly UI similar to Netflix. Kodi improves that with cover arts and tv-friendly user interface.

Have you used sixaxis before? I'm just wondering., so I can help you figure out the issue.

I have but I think the problem is I didn't see a Bluetooth address when I set it up on the Nexus player maybe I have to fix the zoom setting in the overscan setting on my Nexus player to see it
