IR signal - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to get a better distance or an app that reaches farther. Watch on never works for me unless I'm up on the TV.
Is it just me or is watchon like that with everyone.
I have an LG TV

I have a small living room so mine works just fine . About 15 feet away I guess.

The IR sensor seems to be VERY directional....mine can reach from across the room, but I have to litterally point the IR transmitter from my phone directly at the IR receiver on the TV in order for it to work. Same with my DirectTv box. It doesn't spread out like a normal IR transmitter on a remote does, unfortunately.

I agree. I guess I shouldn't complain too much. I just can't seem to ever get in a good line of site.

Barometer

I noticed the Nexus 4 will have a barometer. Do other phones have a barometer and I've just missed this? What can this be used for?

Galaxy Nexus did......but the built-in barometer that's got so many of us scratching our heads has a much different purpose. Android engineer Dan Morrill took to the social pages of Google+ to clarify the confusion. Turns out, Sammy added the barometer to help the device more rapidly acquire a GPS lock by delivering altitude coordinates to the required latitude and longitude GPS equation. From Engadget article.
The Galaxy Nexus has a barometer. It is used for things like getting your altitude to improve GPS location determination.
That's nifty. It will also help me track my altitude during my next 30km+ jump.
Very good to know guys. Hmm i wonder what app opportunities there are here...

It would be nice if GPS test supported it. I can also image a humorous "Highest Altitude" badge in Foursquare (but who uses Foursquare anymore?).
Wasnt the Xoom the first device with a barometer?

Indeed....same article stated as much.
Is anything known about the quality of the barometer readings? Are they accurate enough for altitude?
You can use your barometer to contribute to pressureNET! It's a free, open source barometer network for Android. I'm building it in hopes to create a weather network of unprecedented size and resolution in order to improve short-term, local weather prediction.

Great idea, cumulonimbus_ca. I will get it the day my nexus is delivered! Keep up the great work. I'll do some reading up about it in the mean time, i.e. Privacy policy.

Does anyone know its resolution ? The Barometer on my Galaxy S3 is pretty good, I'm a paraglider pilot and i use it as a Variometer, it works pretty well.
Since i'll get a Nexus 4, its time to get more info on that barometer.
How dare anyone collate the atmospheric pressure imposed on thee.......... How dare they?
Flouride in the water supply is bad enough!
barometer for calls/ mic
Actually the barometer is used for mic noise cancellation, it is used to calibrate the pressure on the mic to be nicelly centered for calls. :cyclops:
I thought the barometer was used with the Garmin car app, which plugs into my OBD II sensor in my car, in order to measure how much psi of boost is coming from my turbocharger.......
-.-"
I noticed a few days ago that the Nexus 4 came with a barometer sensor that is used to help the GPS accuracy. I decided to test this out using Barometer HD. It worked great and allowed me to save my pressure data.
However, the past two days it's been saying "No barometer sensor detected". Thinking this was GPS related I tried turning it on, but no luck. I ran Z - Device Test and it says I do not have the sensor either.
Anyone know what's going on?

[Q] does watchon work for anybody??

I thought it would be kind of cool, so I went through the programming and set it up for my LG V and my time warner high def cable box.
Everything seemed to work, but now all it will do is change the channel on the box. The volume doesn't work, and if I go to turn off the TV it comes up with a screen asking which device I want to control but won't let me select either one.
I'm using it on a Samsung tv and a Comcast set top box, and it's working great for me.
ILO tv & comcast box. works great.
Lg and Panasonic tvs, both with com cast boxes are a no go.

Comcast box and Hisense tv, working.
Also have tvs at work, LG, all working (Around 10) with the same code sent on one of the tvs.
Pretty happy with this as now I can control my work TVs without having to fumble around with remotes.
Two different Samsung TV models & two FIOS Multi-Room DVR's...all working great. Volume doesn't work, but that's because it's controlled by my surround sound system.
Mine's the same way. Got cable working but now no volume.
It works with my LG TV. I have a Comcast X1 and am able to change channels, but a lot of other buttons like menu and DVR don't work. Going to give the setup another go tomorrow.

I actually disabled it. I never used the app but apparently it was running in the background and I kept getting force close messages.
I can get everything to work beside the volume on my Demon AV receiver. I can get it to turn on and off but not the volume. Can anyone give me advice on doing this?

Try again man but this time instead of picking comcast for the brand of set top box, go to other brands and scroll to find the actual company who made the box. For example I have comcast xfyinity cable as well and my 1st set up failed selecting "comcast" as the brand so I looked at my receiver and it was made by Scientific Atlantic or some shat like that lol. But it worked choosing it that way. Hope this helps u?

IR blaster Query!

Hello All,
I want to know that is GS 4's IR blaster having learning mode ?
Means My friends G2 has it, u can manually configure any remote. It can record signals from other remotes & can transmits them back. So if the TV or whatever device is not in the list u can gate away with this cool functionality. My other friends HTC one is also having the same feature.
Please reply me as I am thinking of buying GS4.. other two i.e. G2 & HTC One are still damn expensive.
Thanks.
No because the S4 only transmits IR signal there is no receiver.

Ohh that's sad.. Then no S4 for me.. As I have TV's those are not branded, also I saw in S4 mini there is not even my country "India" in TV app.. So that receiver functionality in a must for me.. Anyways thanks buddy.

IR Blaster

Is it me or is the IR Blaster on the Note 4 substantially better than previous Galaxy phones? Or my LG G3 for that matter.
Due to the location of my media cabinet in my living room, I used to have do some creative maneuvering to get the IR blasters on my previous phones to work. With the Note 4, I'm finding that simply pointing in the general direction is good enough to work.
the ir blaster has like 3 times the range of my moms G2. its great.
Yes I agree it's so much better. I had an LG G3 and the ir blaster on the note 3 & 4 work flawlessly compared it. I was never able to control my devices with it.

I don't know if it has 3 times the range because my room is not large enough to test. LOL
However I can say there is a day and night difference in the range compared to my
Note 3, with the Note 3 I had to move my recliner 5-6 feet closer to the TV to get
the remote to working consistently but with the Note 4 I can control the TV even if
I am at the far wall of my front room which is about 8 feet further than my recliner
is located.
Where is the remote on the note 4?

Most all the ir remote control apps work really good on the Note 4.
Here are my favorites which can be found at the google play store.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sec.watchon.phone.plus
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kabanka.remote.control.tv
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.remotefairy
There are a lot more to choose from at the play store.
Check em out!
Good luck!

There are a few different versions of Samsung Watchon, the latest
one with the most features is "Watchon Plus", it's also at the
google play store.
Just do a search for Watchon Plus at the play store.
I agree the IR blaster on the note4 is leaps and bounds better then the N3. I can sit on my bed with the note pointed straight up and in changes channels. on my N3 it had to be pointed directly at it. I don't know if the distance has been increased or just the spread of the beam has been increased

Grey Plastic at Top Where IR Was on Older Models

Hey guys, quick question, I know the 10 doesn't have an IR blaster anymore so I'm just curious what the plastic grey part is at the top of the phone is for if it has no IR blaster anymore (it looks like the IR blaster used to look)? Is it purely decorative lol? Thanks!
Its the brainwave reader. It allows you to read the minds of those around you.

Hm, I guess that's something HTC has over Samsung!
It's the not-an-IR-blaster.
Anyone else disappointed with the removal of IR blasters from these devices?
The one on the S6 Edge was super powerful. I could bounce it off the wall and turn off the TV on the other side of the room 20 feet away!
And speaking of IR if you point the camera on the 10 at something reflective you will see the IR laser autofocus assist illuminating. It will be in your pictures too! That's kind of disappointing. I have yet to take pictures of some hot metal pipes but I suspect they will have that ominous purple glow telltale sign of lack of IR filter!

Mines like that at work due to signal not reaching into the building. I have Wi-Fi calling enabled so I often wondered if it really tries to keep more than 1X going.
