Android 4.x in Windows 8.1 - How? - Windows 8 General

So I gave up my Android Tablet which was stuck on Android 2.3 and got myself a Lenovo Lynx K3011W tablet with Windows 8.1 on it.
My initial idea was to install Virtualbox on it and then install Android-x86 within a VM. I've done this successfully on my Windows 8 laptop.
So, after installing Android-x86 from the ISO here (android-x86-4.0-RC2-s103t.iso), the VM boots and lets me do things. However, the touch is way off. If I tap in the center of the screen, the tap registers in the center of the VM. If I tap about an inch off center, the tap registers about 1 1/2 inches off center. 2 inches = 4ish VM inches and so on.
My questions here are: Has anybody done this before? Should I use a different ISO? Should I give up?
System Specs:
Atom Z2760 1.8 GHz
2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator
64 GB Hard Drive
Windows 8.1

Fullscreening the VM not an option?
Although that might require a keyboard unless you perhaps set virtualbox to load straight into fullscreen (havent checked possibility of this before) and then shut down android from within the VM to get out of the VM.

I haven't found out how to yet. I've tried to follow the guide below and several others to do so but haven't figured it out.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6202342/switch-android-x86-screen-resolution

I have been using genymotion along with some other posts on xda I have gotten that up and running pretty well. Still uses Virtualbox and you have to enable ARM Translation in order to get most apps off the play store.
The touch screen is pretty accurate on my samsung 7 slate running windows 8.1.

I used this to install Android (x86) on my HP laptop running Windows 8. It installs fine, and my laptop can see the other operating system. It just can't boot (missing grldr.mbr). You could try using it. I don't know of its compatibility with Windows 8.1 though.

That is changing resolution. Not what I meant.
On a standard virtualbox install you can hold right control + F to switch from the VM running in a window to the VM being full screened like a game.

When I change it to full screen, the resolution is still the same so I still have the issue.

Android IA?
Has anyone tried this yet? It looks like these guys have taken what the android 86 project started and have advanced to the windows 8 tablet environment. The latest iso boots using UFEI instead of the conventional boot process. It appears that the Dell V8P has this capability. You can read more at: https://01.org/android-ia/downloads/2013/android-4.2.2r1-ia0.
I am waiting to get my USB otg cable and sd card to attempt this.
Cheers :cyclops:

Try this:
1. First, close your VM. Then, navigate to C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\. Hold Shift and right click an open area of the window. Select “Open Command Window Here”. A command prompt window will open in exactly the correct directory to do the job.

2. Type VBoxManage.exe setextradata "Android" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32. You can edit the name in quotes to your virtual machine name (case is important), as well as the custom resolution to the native resolution of your display.
3. Restart your VM, and you can now select from the custom resolution you just enabled.

I would recommend using the BlueStacks if you don't rely on Android much.
Its simpler to install, doesn't need any partition changes, can run inside Windows, which means you get multitasking, Google Play built in, and recently updated to Android 4.0

I had installed bluestack in lenovo lynx in win8. It was working ok but very slow.. I think it won't go faster even if you install some other android emulator as long as it works insight Windows. So basically with atom we cant have playable android..

I haven't tried the last version yet but the version before was working but almost unusable.

1. Connect phone to PC and transfer file without install driver [live USB flashs] - First you need to change a setting on the usb connection and then it can be used as an usb flash drive, but I think it will still install drivers (but not Kies)
6. Lug fix package (application) work ? everything work nice after it ? - I didn't feel I needed a fix and so didn't install any.
7. Screen work like charm under sun - No, when I'm out I have to increase the display brightness and it isn't very easy to see, but I had the same problem with other mobiles.
8. Do make you happy i9000? Yes, very stylish, very light.
9. How much did you buy it ? Contract with Orange via phones4u.co.uk

Android IS linux. You don't have to install another linux distro on top of it. But the answer is yes, you can (but it will slow your phone).
As for the driver, you need to install the phone drivers to your pc before you mount the phone. Nokia did the same. Any smartphone does. The only difference is that because of android-linux, you have to mount the drivers before you can use them.

I'll also add, you might like Linux, but Android is Linux, and standard linux distributions are horrible for phones. Remember, smartphones require that applications can be killed at any time to run efficiently. Meego would probably be the only other open Linux platform suitable for phones probably, but that is intel only I think (i9000 is ARM).
The question is, do you like Linux because it is good, or because it is open source? Because there seems to be a whole army of users pushing Ubuntu and other Linux distro's, even though it often isn't the best choice for them (desktop linux distro's still have serious usability issues). What's even more of a surprise is that open source advocates are clinging to Linux, rather than BSD..
Anyway, someone has apparently gotten Ubuntu running on them, but don't expect a nice experience. Android already uses Linux, and is better suited for mobiles (furthermore, most of the i9000 software/drivers/environment is open source)
Everyone agree this is the Android phone at this point in time?
I think so .

That isn't a good reason.. Even on windows you can switch the standard desktop and perform heavy theming if you wish to do so..
And frankly, I'm sorry to tell you, the Linux kernel isn't THAT great. Since it's open source, it never evolved to allow many drivers to be backwards/forward compatible like Windows. Also, since it's GPL, it is impractical for some device developers to implement drivers (since some devices are mainly software based)..
But yes, Android DOES use Linux, but I strongly urge you to take a deeper look into the situation.

Maybe thats good enough for you? They say it can be done but its very slow.

[Release][Linux] ModeDetect USBID Detector

Introduction:
Sometimes a device's screen can be deceiving. black-screen, white-screen, -Phone--/!\--PC. All of these can be a download mode. Sometimes a black screen brick can actually be in a rare S5PC110 development mode where you can use UnBrickable Mod without a hardware modification. ModeDetect for Linux. It will work on any Linux based OS with Java installed.
instructions:
Install Linux on your computer. Install Ubuntu if you don't have Linux.
Ensure you have the latest version of Java.
Download and run the detector here: http://code.google.com/p/hummingbird-hibl/downloads/list.
Simply remove the battery, plug in USB and insert the battery
Try again while holding Vol+ and Vol-
Try using a 301Kohm Jig in the USB slot with the battery inserted then plug in the USB cable.
Results:
All you need to do is run it, and plug in your questionable device. If it shows anything besides the image below, then you're not bricked.
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

}
If it will only show the image above, then you can apply UnBrickable Mod, or JTAG to your device to recover it.
If it shows this, regardless of what's on your screen, you're in download mode:
If it shows this, regardless of what's on your screen, you can use UnBrickable Mod to recover it.
Currently the supported modes are:
S5PC110 (UnBrickable Mod)
Download Mode
Samsung Kies mode
Media Player mode
Mass Storage device
ADB debug mode
Samsung GMO Modem
Fastboot mode
Conclusion:
I hope this helps someone. Mode Detector is a simple app which looks at the lsusb device IDs and gives a nice GUI front-end for interpenetration of the results. This app should be the last thing you play with before you decide to open it, or send it in for repair.
Any ideas?

If you have enough memory you will not notice much of a difference. I don't. Install 3d extensions and allocate as many processor cores to it as possible. Enable all the options. Its a slight slowdown but nothing noticeable.

i have to disagree. i noticed a huge drop in performance between native and VM.
Core i7 940, 8gb ram, 128gb SSD, 1gb nvidia quadro fx3800. its no slouch.
i also tried it out on my main desktop. horrible performance:
Core i7 920 12gb ram, 3-15k rpm SAS drives in RAID0, 2xati 6970 2gb, water cooled, etc, etc.
you cannot RELIABLY play call of duty/battlefield in VM without huge performance drops. sure, you can load up a game thats about 3 years old and play it no problem, drop your graphics settings down and probably play it ok, but i didnt spend all my money on hardware to to get only 'mediocre' performance.

This program as become a part of my flashing routine. I have it running when flashing via Heimdall.
Hi guys, hope you could help out.
Will running the resurrector and Hemdall be possible on a VM (Puppy Linux) as i am running windows and don't want to dual boot as much as possible.
Thanks in advance!

[Q] How to Dual Boot Linux and Windows 8?

Id like to Dual boot linux onto windows 8, yet I have no idea how. Help please!
There are a large number of questions you need to answer first, which you haven't. For example:
1) What model of computer?
2) Are you trying to set up a dual-boot machine, or to boot Linux within Windows? Both are possible and your post does not make it clear.
3) Is there a particular Linux distribution you intend to use?
4) Do you have a 32-bit or 64-bit system?
5) Do you care whether the Windows or Linux bootloader loads first?
6) Do you have BitLocker drive encryption enabled?
7) Do you intend to have a "shared" partition for data used by both OSes, or to keep them fully separate?
... I'm just going to stop there.
Seriously, there are hundreds, possibly thousands of tutorials on the Internet for installing various distros of Linux onto various machines. Win8 introduces the possibilities that you'll need to disable Secure Boot and also the possibility that the CPU you're using is crippled to only work with Windows. You haven't even provided us with enough info to tell you which one, and we are *not* here to hold your hand through installing an OS you apparently know basically nothing about. Besides, if you hadn't noticed, this is a Windows forum, not a Linux forum.

Yes, I understand you're not here to hold my hand, but I am willing to learn even though I am extremely inexperienced. I want to become experienced.
1) HP Dv6-6033cl
2) Id like to run a dual boot machine.
3) I need to use 13.04 or 13.10, either will work fine.
4) I have a 64-bit version
5) I really dont care which boots first, Id just like to be able to run Linux so I can use it to program.
6) No, bitlocker is not on.
7) Id like to keep them completely seperate.
Again, I understand that this isn't a hold your hand deal. I apologize for that, but I want to learn and dont know where to start. Id love to learn all about partitions, booting different OS, being able to know the computer inside and out, not just your average user. Maybe you can point me in the right direction. That much is more than appreciated.
OK, from the version numbers you quoted, I'm assuming you're referring to Ubuntu ("Ubuntu" is not another word for Linux; it's a particular configuration of software packages running atop a Linux kernel, called a "distribution". Specifying Ubuntu is the kind of thing you should have included in your first post. There are over 750 Linux distros out there, no joke). The good news is that there are *so many* tutorials about installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot that it's literally not even worth finding a particular one to recommend. They also have their own forums (not here on XDA; you want http://ubuntuforums.org) full of info.
Another important point is the "what you want to do with it" bit, which you did cover a bit. Unless there's a specific reason it needs to be Linux, you actually almost certainly could get by with using either Windows development tools, installing MinGW (Linux-style development tools running in the Windows environment), or installing and running Cygwin and using the Linux-like tools in the POSIX-on-Windows environment it provides. For older Windows versions there was actually an official POSIX-on-NT environment from Microsoft, called Interix, but it's been deprecated (a shame; I used it to do some Linux-targeted development back in college when my laptop wasn't really beefy enough that a VM was a good idea and dual-booting would have been a pain, and I still use it today for everything from my preferred command-line shell to remote login to version control software to... you get the idea). Ubuntu is actually far from my first recommendation for a dev environment - it's a "least common denominator" desktop-oriented distro, so you may need to configure it a bit for dev work - but it's certainly capable and its popularity means you won't have any trouble finding help.
Looking for help on a Windows subforum of a mobile device forum when your question involves installing Linux on a non-mobile device isn't the best idea, though.
As far as I know what I'm going to do with it, it's an OS to start developing. I have no clue what to do yet, but I am in the process of learning! I thought itd be a good idea to go to a Windows 8 subform because my current OS is Windows 8 and, from what Ive read, I need to disable "Secure Boot", change BIOS settings, etc. I have literally done EVERYTHING I can think of and look up, including tutorials, talking to people who have already done it, the whole lot. I feel stuck! I need a solution I cant solve! Im sure after I figure the solution I will be perfectly fine! The issue is, though, I can not access the BIOS. I even created an unallocated partition. When I go to settings I do this:
Settings > Change PC Settings > General > Restart Now
On Restart, I go Troubleshoot > Advanced Options
Now, theres suppose to be some kind of settings for BIOS/UEFI, yet its missing! I cant access it because it doesnt exist on my bootup!
Ive also tried to get to the BIOS by pressing F1, F2, and DELETE to no avail.
Like I said, I am so stuck its not even funny. Its quite frustrating. If you have any developing environment setups you recommend, please reco, mmend away! I love doing this kinda stuff. Its a challenge and frustrating, yet when I get through it, its rewarding. Thats why I really want to start developing and giving back to this site. Theyve given me so much for my E4GT, I wanna give back.
Anyway, do you think you could have a possible solution?

I apologize, I hadnt realized I posted the same post twice. Still new at this!
If its a hewlett packard, usually they use F2 as the bios key. Shut the laptop down. Press power and as soon as the screen backlight comes on (which is usually instantly) hit F2.
But I really dont recommend going through the hassle of dual booting ubuntu with windows just to learn how to program. Most of the time you dont need linux, Cygwin or MinGW at all and can purely go windows based from day 1. Learning C or C++ without an IDE I do find is easiest in a linux environment so that I would recommend at least cygwin. But even so, for just programming you would probably be better off just using virtualbox if you dont want to use cygwin, it allows you to run one operating system within another like so:

Thats bodhi I was using there, my favourite linux distro. Its ubuntu based so anything that says "hey I work on ubuntu" works on it usually and guides that walk you through the process of setting something up on ubuntu often apply to bodhi. But out of the box you get the enlightenment desktop instead of unity and you basically dont get any software beyond midori and terminology. Fits on a CD. Because of the lack of software though I won't recommend a linux newcomer who would probably be better suited to ubuntu or mint (of the 2 I prefer mint, also ubuntu compatible).
Never be afraid of a command line interface/console/terminal/command prompt/cmd/whatever you want to call it. Hell, on windows right now hold the windows key + R, enter CMD and then click ok. You might suddenly think you've stepped into a time machine, but its a powerful tool and still relevant in this day and age. All of your first programs will be on the command line. Many software dev tools will be on the command line. My preferred text editor on linux is also on the command line (nano, bit barebones but thats how I like my editors).
Now more importantly. The entire reason for this was programming. Programming what is a better question. It would probably be more useful to you to know where to start and what tools are right for you than to know how to set up linux. Honestly, if the aim is just to have a bit of code you wrote flashing your name on the screen all over the place etc without a particular aim yet, then I would suggest Python, specifically Python 2 over Python 3 as I personally find the online resources and 3rd party libraries are more plentiful for 2, although either one works. actually, scratch that, python is probably a good starting point for learning how to program regardless.
On windows all you will need to do is download and install python: http://www.python.org/download/ and also have a decent text editor with syntax highlighting so basically anything but notepad and certainly not an office type program, python includes IDLE which I have a severe disliking of, notepad++ is a popular choice on windows though, code-edit is on the windows store and pretty decent (yeah I went there suggesting a windows 8 app, deal with it haters ) and I personally use GEdit. On OSX and linux Python 2 is preinstalled so all you need is the text editor.
Google Fu is also required Plenty of tutorials out there.
Yes, the whole point is learn how to program properly and setup a decent developing enviornment! Ill try the suggestions you made, since I cant access UEFI/BIOS at all. It's as if the damn thing is non-existent.

Clarification: OP was wanting to learn more about kernel/AOSP build development, hence why I suggested a dual boot Linux. Virtualized Linux processes, at least even on Win 7, took a serious performance hit where a kernel build took over an hour even on a i7.
I'm aware that apps can be developed without going to Linux but it was my understanding that he'll need to to do the above - and at least in my experience VMs won't cut it. Options welcome.
I ended up dual booting Ubuntu 13.10 alongside Windows 8. I had troubles creating a partition for Ubuntu and seemed to have accidentally formatted the biggest drive, which I believe was where the Windows 8 OS was stored. I successfully put Ubuntu on there, or so I thought. Upon restart, I entered the GRUB boot selector. I first attempted to enter the Ubuntu OS, which brought me to a black writable page. I restarted the HP and tried booting into Windows 8. It gave me the error that the OS is missing. Now Im stuck in the bootloader and cant access my PC. I have an HP Dv6-6033cl laptop with a 750 hard drive I believe. Any help is appreciated.

[VHD] [Download] [Info] Windows Phone 8.1 Preview

All, I am starting this thread to chronicle what new features I can see in the extracted vhd. from the SDK. I will be uploading it here so you all can play along, too!
I am hoping to see if I can "hack" this vhd to enable some bonus features in the emulator. Also, it appears it might be flashable to some devices as all the proper boot parts are present. Enjoy!

A quick google of the MSM8974 chipset...reveals that it is used in the Galaxy Note 3 and theLG G2! I am speculating that there is something similar coming out soon for WP.
It's about 30% of all partitions.
I am pretty sure it has everything that needed to "patch" the appropriate partitions into an existing GDR3 image. The end result would be something that was now flashable to a specific device.

That comes from the SkyDrive app built into Windows 8.1. You can use SkyDrive as a file manager, although rudimentary in my opinion. I'm sure it is the same thing in WP8.1
The actual name of the SkyDrive app on Windows 8.1 actually IS file manager or something like that.

In case anyone is interested how to enable the new wi-fi settings page: after you've loaded the SOFTWARE hive in RegEdit, you need to navigate to SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SecurityManager\Applications. There's two changes we need to make here:
1. Make a new multi-string value named C:\PROGRAMS\WIFIUXBLUE\WIFIUXCPL.EXE, set the value to WIFIUXBLUE
2. Navigate to WIFIUXBLUE subkey and make a new multi-string value named ApplicationBinaries, set the value to C:\PROGRAMS\WIFIUXBLUE\WIFIUXCPL.EXE.
After you make the above changes, unload the hive and fire up the emulator/hyper-v VM.
Having failed to install the whole SDK a couple of days ago I went poking around in the installer and found the VHD myself, and I thought just for laughs I'd try booting it natively on a couple of netbooks I had to hand. Here's an eeePC 701SD and a Samsung NC10 booting the image:
Note: WP8.1 does not appear to be able to boot from USB, at least this particular image of this particular build, it must be booted from a non-removable drive. The eeePC I have booting from a CompactFlash card installed internally via the miniPCIe-style SSD slot, and the NC10 has a SATA HDD.
Neither of these machines have touchscreens, so navigation requires the touchpad, which is a little awkward. Worse, there's no indication of where the mouse is pointing, so significant guesswork is needed. The NC10 in particular is pretty smooth, although it's not obvious in the video, one-handed touchpad use makes it difficult to get the kinetic scrolling to kick in.
Just for fun, I tweaked some reg values to correct the model name etc.

Edit:
Interestingly, the power button on each netbook performs exactly as the power button on a real phone would, at least as far as a single short press will turn off the screen as if it's going to sleep, and a single power button press after that will wake it back up. F12 also appears to serve the same function. The back button, which is mapped to Esc, seems to be flaky or non-functional after waking it back up, though. None of the other keyboard keys seem to do anything at all, except F5 or F6, I forget which, and I forget what it did, might have sent me back to the Start Screen, I don't remember.
I have no idea if it's possible to cram any Windows 8.1 drivers into this thing, my knowledge doesn't run that deep, but I'd be interested to hear of possible ways to make this more functional, most of the hardware stuff seems to have dummy drivers which do nothing. Unfortunately neither of these netbooks have Windows 8 compatible graphics chipsets, and the eeePC's Intel GMA915 isn't even capable of running Aero, there were no Aero-capable drivers released for Vista/7. I don't know whether the resolution in Windows Phone 8.1 can be forced, but I did try tweaking some registry keys regarding resolution but it didn't appear to do anything. In the About page under Settings however it does show that the resolution of each netbook is 640x480 and 800x600 respectively, which are the highest standard 4:3 resolutions they're capable of without the correct driver. App resolution is still 480x800.

I also found a shortcut to cmd.exe in the image, but no cmd.exe binary, is it possible to get this kind of access? I didn't expect it to work, but I did try copying cmd.exe from Windows 8.1 32bit into the Calc7 folder, replacing Calc7.exe so I'd have an easy place to try launching it from, but unsurprisingly this long shot didn't do anything, the Calculator button in the apps list simply did nothing at all when pressed.
I also tried booting in VMWare with different RAM settings, below 128MB it gets a bit hairy, 112MB will get it to the Start Screen but it fails to run Office, at 92MB it fails to arrive at the Start Screen, it just sits accessing the boot media, looking like it's attempting to load but failing, I left it for 30 minutes and it never progressed beyond the blackness after the boot splash. At 64MB it doesn't even show the boot splash, it simply shows a single underscore and stops.
For the cmd.exe: you can't run desktop applications because they are linked with MSVCRT.dll, Kernel32.dll and NTDLL.dll on the PC, and their version probably don't match on the phone. However, if you were to copy those DLLs to same folder as executable on the phone, it might work.

May be worth a try. Another concern I had though was the UI, how would WP handle a desktop app? There's no desktop and no windows, would it just draw it full-screen?
I've been looking at the settings for the navigation bar in the registry. Dimension for all the virtual buttons are stored for each resolution sepparately. What's interesting is that there were not 4, but 6 resolutions listed. Besides the WVGA, 720p, WXGA and 1080p, there were also qHD (960×540) and QHD (2560×1440). What's up with that? Are they adding support for these new resolutions?

For the cmd.exe: you can't run desktop applications because they are linked with MSVCRT.dll, Kernel32.dll and NTDLL.dll on the PC, and their version probably don't match on the phone. However, if you were to copy those DLLs to same folder as executable on the phone, it might work.

That's a negatory. I tried putting those files in the same folder as the exe and I also tried putting them in System32, renaming the originals as necessary, I still get nothing more than the tap animation when I press Calculator. I'm still sure there's more to it though, I don't understand how it would render the cmd window, and there may be code signing issues, I don't know, I can only really guess at this point.
@DaviUnic: That is in fact what they are probably doing. qHD (one quarter of "Full HD" AKA 1080p AKA 1920x1080) is not a very exciting resolution - only a little better than the WP8 minimum, well below the WXGA that was the best option at RTM - but QHD (Quad HD, where "HD" here means 1280x720 and thus QHD is 2560x1440) is definitely interesting. Also a little scary... I've got a $300 27" QHD monitor, and that is a *lot* of pixels! Putting that on a phone would be nuts... awesome, but kind of insane!
Maybe they're adding projector / external display support? Some Android phones can drive external displays, which would be a reason to support the high resolutions sometimes found on desktop monitors...

Screen mirroring. It's coming in 8.1, and allows you to project your screen onto a TV/monitor/any external display device. So yeah, I guess that explains it...
Wow, nice work, man!
I'll be watching this.

Having failed to install the whole SDK a couple of days ago I went poking around in the installer and found the VHD myself, and I thought just for laughs I'd try booting it natively on a couple of netbooks I had to hand. Here's an eeePC 701SD and a Samsung NC10 booting the image:

Did you do anything special to get this to work? I dumped the WP8.0 VHD onto a disk and tried getting it to boot on my ThinkPad X230T. It shows the Windows logo and the hard drive churns for a while but it eventually settles on a plain black screen. I'm downloading the WP8.1 SDK but it's going slow.

Nope, I mounted the VHD in Windows, which should work in 7 or 8, then used HDD Raw Copy to clone it to a 16GB CF card for the eeePC and the 160GB HDD in the NC10, then booted from them as if was just regular Windows, and it started up as normal.
It will fail to boot, and restart somewhere during the boot process, if you try it with a USB disk, at least that's what it did for me, so it must be an internal IDE or SATA connected drive of some kind.
Edit: Also, a tip for others trying this out, you must mount and clone or convert the VHD to a raw image first before trying to write it to a drive, simply imaging the VHD file itself to a drive will not work, it's in a non-flat format and will not expand to its full size upon writing. It needs to be the full size image. The easiest way to do that is as I've written above, mount the VHD in Disk Management, it will appear as a regular drive in Explorer, you can then clone the now fully accessible virtual drive to another disk, or take a full image for future use.

Yeah it did the reboot once but then it started up but the screen is blank. It shows the Windows flag while it's booting but after the hard drive is done churning it's a blank screen. Probably doesn't have my graphics drivers. :/
The sleep button turns the LCD on and off, so the system appears to be running, just not showing anything. I tried putting the intel graphics driver in Windows\INF but it didn't seem to do anything.

Hm, both of my netbooks have Intel graphics, albeit older ones, both GMA9xx based, so I've at least had it working without the dedicated driver on an Intel chipset, did you try without modifying it? How is the drive hooked up to the machine?
Also, try hitting the F1-F12 buttons, one of them is Home I think, maybe try Esc too. In fact, press everything, see what happens, lol. AFAIK, none of them do anything destructive, most of the keyboard does nothing.

Linux on tv box

I'd like to use some sort of linux distribution on an old tv box. The box is based on the Amlogic AML-8726-m3 processor and has four USB ports and a cardreader. I was not able to find something about a ported os, but maybe you can help me to port it on my own.
I applaud that you want to recycle something and I don't want to be a party pooper, but wouldn't you be better off with a Raspberry Pi?
The Amlogic is an old single core processor. OTOH, availability of RPi is poor now.
Sure, but I don't want to pay 60-100€ for a RasPi Zero 2w. And I think, the processor would be powerful enough for simple office usage.
The Raspberry Pi Zero 2W lists for $15.
Micro Center used to sell in-person, limit one, Pi Zero for $5, Pi Zero W for $10.
Since I lived nearby I used to buy one every time I dropped in.
Since you're quoting in Euros, I'll presume that you're not in the US.
If you were I might be inclined to drop you an RPi in the mail.
I'm living in Germany. The Raspberry Pi is out of stock in every shop. You could only buy it on Amazon for very high prices (https://www.amazon.de/Raspberry-Pi-Zero-2-W/dp/B09KLVX4RT/). I hope that the prices are dropping soon, but since they are very high at the moment, I have to use alternatives, like my old tv box.
Hi, it is possible to use the app Termux to install Qemu package to then be able to install a Linux distro. I wish it was easy as said, done, but if you have time I wrote a guide that could help to teach the basics of gettting qemu up and running. I haven't made a preinstalled linux machine yet but have a couple windows machines built on there as demos.
The guide is structured using Nox android emulator, but would work on most android devices that can run termux https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...r-android-devices-windows-10-nox-lab.4481613/
Also note that there are lots of premade linux distros for termux, my guide is for those that want to program their own. If you want to save yourself the time though you could search for prebuilt termux linux machines
This sounds good, but I would like to install linux directly to the flash chip, because of the better performance. However, the device is running only Android 4. If it is not possible, to port linux to the device, virtualization would be better than using Android.
I completely understand, I too am trying to learn how to flash directly onto my shield's drive! In my limited knowledge, it would seem that our major limitation would be with the bootloader that is on current and past android devices, it doesn't have efi or the uefi capabilities.
Tianocore is an open source project that a lot of great minds have come together to make the technology readily available to the public, but I'm too novice to be able to successfully implement anything worthwhile yet.
What is TianoCore?

If you're curious about edk2 i posted a bunch of nonsense I learned about it on page three of this guide. It's a bunch of relevant links or at least a starting point.
Root Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 Version
THIS IS OUTDATED https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/bootmod-root-your-shield-in-1-minute-2015-2017-2019.4524873/ REPLACES THIS IF YOU WANT ANDROID OR USE THIS GUIDE...

I believe I read that edk2 will be implemented into later android firmwares, but if we could figure it out properly, we could add the efi driver to any android firmware and in theory install any OS
Replacing the proprietary bootloader sounds good, but sadly I have absolutely no idea, how I should do that (maybe it would be actually too much effort for an old TV box). So, I think, it would be better to work with the existing one. Wouldn't it be possible to flash the image, using adb?
I think possible yes, anything is possible, but the limitations is going to be with the iso or image you are using, how it unpacks the boot sector or the efi. You can flash any image over, but to get it to boot is the other problem.
Hypothetically, I would think if you were able to edit the image to the point where it was just the linux distro's system files or the system structure unpacked , it could be possible to fastboot flash the image as system.img, as thats kinda how android is structured with the separate system image and boot image, but I don't think the public knowledge is there to be able to do anything easily without developing it yourself.
That's not very optimistic.
A few months ago I downloaded the Android image from the manufacturers website. After I asked them for some information about the TV box, they deleted the whole support webpage for the device. But right now I've found a copy of the file on a USB flashdrive. The file also contains a PDF document with an instruction, for installing the image. May I could use this "update app" instead of adb for my own image?

Oh for sure! It looks like they have their own built in firmware installer, which will save you the headache of using adb fastboot flashing. I hope it works out easily for you! I'd totally throw a copy of that firmware on the cloud and link it somewhere too. You'd surely be helping someone out there some day with that!
That's a good idea! Which cloud would you refer?
I already searched in the internet for images for this device and arm architecture (ARMv7), but I was not able, to find something. Could I also only compile Debian or Ubuntu or anything else for this arm architecture, or do I have to do driver development?
I use google drive now its free and super fast. For me I can download 5gb isos in 5-10 mins. Plus you can keep making google accounts if you go over 15gb limit if you know what I mean.

I think as far as your second question you could do one or the other. You could explore learning how to compile any linux distro you choose, since in theory (my semantics may be wrong here) they all run the same basic linux kernel, the same as any android distro does, so you can choose to explore any distro to recompile into a system.img for flashing.
Else choose to learn driver development to bypass choice 1, if that makes sense. It kinda gives you the freedom to learn whatever sounds most interesting for the time. Hopefully enough of us will start learning this we can create our own solution to what would seem to be a trivial problem but definitely isn't right now XD

Thank You For Sharing This Sir~! Amazing!!
Good evening everyone and Happy New Year!
I have a counter question.
I decided to buy a TV box with Linux OS and made a choice on https://www.edision.gr/en/detail/ping
I would like to install some applications, but how much I did not dig and nothing happened.
Can anyone advise where and how to start. Thank you in advance.
