[Q] VPN and wifi tethering - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have VPN on my Nexus 4 and running version 4.4. I can't get the wifi to work when I have my VPN on. I tried to use PPTP, L2TP and a OpenVPN app without any luck. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Thanks.

[Q] VPN help needed

First, the background. I have a new Verizon Galaxy Tab, very impressive and I have searched extensively about this problem. I need to establish a VPN tunnel with a couple of client sites. I have Server 2008 and Sonicwall endpoints available with PPTP (Server 2008) and L2TP (both endpoints) available. I have spent the better part of a day trying every option I can to establish a VPN connection with no success.
Has anyone successfully used the built-in VPN capabilities? I have read that PPTP is broken in Froyo but that possibly L2TP may work. Please do not suggest alternate services as a solution as I am aware already of that route, although I am open to purchasing any app that would make this work. My device is not rooted and I am not interested at this time of flashing any custom ROM. I am interested in determining what works and how you made it work. Thanks in advance.

SonicWALL have VPN clients for their NetExtender and Aventail products on the Market. I've used Aventail and it works great.
Regards,
Dave
Thanks. I will give it a try. I found a client in the market from Sonicwall.
Update
I tried the SSL VPN client (NetExtender) for SonicWall and it works very well. If anyone needs a VPN solution and their SonicWall supports SSL VPN then go for it.
do you need to have SonicWall VPN? Is it possible to use pptp to connect to a vpn?
I tried the PPTP and L2TP built-in clients with no success. I bought my Tab to be able to fix a problem on a server when I am mobile and I was disappointed that I was not able to get either working. Searching didn't yield much except that PPTP is apparently broken and L2TP is somewhat non-standard. It may also be that it has been fixed on models from other carriers (I have a Verizon unit). So I say try it, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work. I am hoping that the supposed Gingerbread release may offer some fixes in this area. In the meantime, the SonicWall is a solution for me, but won't be for most people.
I have the Verizon Tab also. I am wondering how I can connect to my VPN. Can Android use any of these: OpenVPN (SSL), PPTP, and Cisco IPsec.
I have the built-in VPN working via L2TP to my home network, running xl2tpd. I never got IPSec working, though (trying to provide with StrongSwan PSK).
Are you using the Verizon Tab? I have no problem connecting to the same vpn with my Evo.

I'm using a T-Mobile tab. That shouldn't make any difference, however.
I've never seen L2TP working on Android, and so far (1.6; 2.1; 2.2) Froyo has the best PPTP support with a whole minute before whatever app you are using starts to time out.

CM7 with working VPN

Hi All,
I've been trying a few CM7 builds, and the speed is amazing, but I can't connect to my VPN using either LT2P or PPTP on any of them?
Can anybody please point me in the direction of a CM7 build where VPN works for them? Being in China, where Google services disappear every now and then, having VPN access is very important!
Cheers guys.
I'm guessing nobody uses VPN with CM7? I can get OpenVPN to connect, but it won't route internet traffic through the VPN gateway. So frustrating!
Looking for this too, I can't get my PPTP to even connect. Maybe it's a common issue in all CM builds?
Yes, I have tried many CM7 builds and all the same - PPTP and L2TP refuse to connect. Lucky I have my Galaxy S to use with VPN, but I'd really like to get this working. If any devs stumble on this thread, would logcat output be useful?

I'm using OpenVPN for connecting to my company - this is working very well, except DNS resolution. Therefore I have to use the IP...
PPTP and L2TP are not working on my CM7 phone!
I just got my OpenVPN working by forcing it to use 8.8.8.8 which is google's free DNS server.

I have the same problem! Native CM7 vpn client isnt work via 3G, but if i use WiFi it works fine. The connection is stable, but after seconds traffic goes down, ping also down.
If i use such soft as DroidVPN (free for testing, droidvpnDOTcom) it works fine without any problem. But this soft is commercial vpn access.
Hovewer i need vpn working client for corporate network use.

The big answer would be - ICS. this should solve most of the networking issues.

PPTP VPN

Can anyone verify that PPTP work on nexus 7?
I have a server running pptpd and works fine when I connect via Win7, but no dice on my Nexus 7
Might try L2TP, but I've had issues with that in the past.
i use lt2p, ipsec. it works. or use dd-wrtn into your router.
Thanks. I do run ddwrt and tomatousb but am trying to get it working through the router onto my server.
I'll try l2tpd
Im using strong VPN, and set it up as pptp on my gnex and N7 and everything works fine.

Has anybody been able to connect to an L2TP/IPSEC PSK VPN?

Has anybody been able to connect to an L2TP/IPSEC PSK VPN? This is a known Marshmallow bug, but Samsung found a way to get it working. I am just wondering if the M3 has the bug or it is a combination of the VPN I am trying to connect to or where I am connecting from. If the M3 has the bug, does anyone know of a workaround?
