[Q] Tried to downgrade to MF9 after upgrading to MJA. - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

So... I did the stupid thing. I attempted to go back to my old MF9 backup through TWRP after upgrading to MJA, and now my wifi won't even turn on. I've been trying to figure this out for a few hours now, trying various fixes. I've tried to use ODIN to flash back to complete stock, but that just destroys my phone until I flash a recovery through ODIN. Everything I've seen on the forums so far has made it seem as though there is no hope since Samsung added in Knox.
I'm sorry if this has been resolved elsewhere, but I've literally been searching the General. Q&A, Android Development, Original Android Development, and Developer forums for several hours today with no luck. Can someone please help me with this? I just want my phone to be fully functional again...
EDIT:
Here's the deal; my main problem was with Wifi not working. The Stock MF9 Kernel was not working, but the 4.2.2 TW Kernel found here finally did.

did you try this?

Yes. Nothing changed when I did that. I suppose that I should call out that I am currently on MF9.

i just gave up on trying to do a restore. I actually used Titanium to get as much information from my old backup as possible then just rolled with it. I know that probably isn't what you wanted to hear but that what worked for me.. hope that helps

I have read that the WiFi issue may be a Kernel issue.. Did you try a different TouchWiz kernel and see if it worked out?

This is actually what I was trying to do, sadly. Titanium was backing up my info to the phone storage rather than the SD card, and I had to do a data wipe to get to MJA, so I lost them. I figured I could restore to my MF9 backup to redo them, and that's when the trouble started.

I finally got it working. I had to try several different kernels until one finally worked. Now about flashing a new ROM...

What kernel did you use and how did you install it? I'm having a similar issue and can't find a fix.

Scott, check my first post. I edited it with a link to the page with the kernel I used. Make sure that you choose the correct kernel for your Android version. The MF9 and MJA designators have nothing to do with which kernel you need, so make sure to check in your "aboout phone" section to find out what android version you're running. Using the 4.3 kernel on 4.2.2 will cause a bootloop, which is easily fixed by flashing the correct kernel.

HELP NEEDED. Lost GPS after 2 months of no issues

$20 via paypal to the person who can get me up and running again.
GPS is very important for my line of work, and I'm trying not to panic.
I'm on MK2. I've been using stock and SHOstock ROM flawlessly since getting the phone just before Christmas. I've NEVER had any GPS issues. Ever.
I decided to flash the Safestrap version of Hyperdrive on ROM Slot 1, along with MK2 kernel module. Installed fine. I flipped back to STOCK rom(SHOstock), until I had time to mess with the new ROM. On the way home from work, I realized I had no GPS.
Using GPS Tools and GPS Fix apps, no satellites showing at all.
I've done everything I can think of, including using ODIN to flash back to stock MK2. Still no dice.
Can anyone give a guy a hand? I'm currently running stock and have re-rooted using saferoot(the same way I rooted previously).
Thanks in advance!

I've used this app in the past on my GS3 but it might work here.

Also This post (on another forum was quite informative and it's worth a shot)

There used to a method that involved the service menu on the GS3 but I'm not sure if it still applied

Nothing has happened to the phone(no drops/spills/etc). It started right after flashing the new ROM, so I'm fairly certain it has to be related.

Ted, per our extended private message convo on Friday, thanks for giving me a good shove in the right direction!
Dlp22, I have the same problem, did you solve it?
any suggestion!
I had the same problem after upgrading to MK2, almost on the verge of getting rid of GS4 and switching to another device. But for now, I have fixed it by installing Hyperdrive RS13 using Safestrap on Stock slot (did take a backup of the stock slot before wiping it out)...

AT&T 4.4 Kitkat Update NB1 Should I install or Not?

Somewhat of a noob here so bare with me...
I have an AT&T S4 here in the US and just downloaded the 4.4 kitkat update but postponed it from installing. I imagine firmware comes with this where i wont be able to install a custom recovery and ROM, is that correct? I have my phone rooted which is running MK2 but have yet to install a recovery and ROM on it. I read on AT&T's website that i can only postpone the update 3 times for 4 hours at a time so i guess i have to figure this out soon. What do you guys think? Install the update OR immediately install a recovery and a new ROM so i am not forced to install this update? Thanks for the help fellas, this site has helped me so much already!
Here is info on the AT&T website http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB419415&cv=820#fbid=sUc0HQQUHF_

You CAN NOT install CWM or TWRP on your mk2 S4. Only Safestrap 3.71 is a recovery that works. This is common knowledge that is posted throughout the forums on XDA. Search is your friend. But here, let me give you everything you need so you can not brick your phone in the first place. Please read it & thank the op in the threads. Good luck.

Check out the "all things mk2 nb1" topic. It's in this section. It tells you which files to freeze or if you safestrap and install custom rom your fine. Postponing the update does not mean it won't do it tonight all by itself.
Dev Time Estimates?
Does anyone have an estimate on about how long it will take devs to analyze the security of the new bootloader for the possibility of custom ROMS/recoveries? We can always hope that AT&T/Samsung has opened up a new exploit while trying to fix the old one. :silly:

If there is 1 thing I've learned here...don't ask for a time frame. It piss them off, and that's the last thing we want. Just use titanium backup to freeze the AT&T updater and wait. I've waited this long for 4.4 a few more weeks won't kill me.

If you are on MK2, you did not install CWM recovery. You think you did, but you actually booted back into the stock recovery. Which is the best thing that could have happened to you because a lot of people brick their phones and lose recovery completely trying to install a custom recovery (beside Safestrap) on any firmware past MDL. Fortunately, there is a method for most people to recover even if they do Derp their phone. I suggest you take time to read about what is and is not possible with your phone and the different firmwares because the next time you might not be so lucky. Good luck.

[Q] Help with Durn updates!

my Computer crashed on me a few weeks back and I lost pretty much all my files. Thankfully my personal files were all backed up, but none of my phone modification files survived. I meant to post here to ask for links and such, but couldn't remember what exactly I had. Then an update hits my phone. Never ever had luck updating a rooted phone. Always just ended up ignoring the icon until I got a new one. Well now there's TWO updates that I've fallen behind on......Better figure it out. So. Please. Help.
Info on phone:
Sprint L720T on MK5 Rooted stock rom.
My Question(s)
How to either un-root to get the updates OTA,
OR
How to flash updated stock roms
I've used odin, obviously, to flash the rooted stock. Pretty sure I used cf's autoroot. I just need a Link to Odin and a brief run down of what I'm trying to do. I may fire back a question or two.
I saw a post on flashing what I believe was a stock 4.3 and then up to 4.4.2. Well that's awesome, but I've TWO updates. Is 4.4.2 the newest? And why am I seeing numbers for jellybean, when I typically see things like "NAE" or "MK5".
And why is it sooo easy to root a bloody phone, but a nightmare to UNROOT said phone? Would think that "click, click....and bam. back to normal". Unfortunately, either I'm looking at the wrong things or I really do have to track down stock files for my specific model to re-flash with odin, then accept OTA, then re-root....?
If so, that SEEMS simple enough, but finding stock for my SPECIFIC model is....frustrating. So please, kind folks, help me out with some direct links to what I need?
Pretty sure answers to the question posted above exist on XDA
Use odin to flash L720TVPUAMK5_L720TSPTAMK5_L720TVPUAMK5_HOME.tar.md5
Use the stock recovery to factory reset.
Phone is now unrooted.
.
This^^ there are tutorials and videos on YouTube that show how to use Odin. All you do is place the tar on the PDA section.

S3 to d4....everything's different and I'm scared!

Not really scared lol. Last phone I had anything custom on was the s3. Looking around it's obvious things don't work the same.
Only thing I have done with this s4 is root. Now I'm wanting to run a rom without all the extra att bloat. So just wondering what rom and recovery I should go with. I have Nl1 if it matters.
I want the bloat gone but still have the fancy features. Any input is appreciated!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2616221
Lots to read. But, in case it isn't immediately obviuos, you will need SafeStrap and its recovery. You will only be able to run, for the most part, TouchWiz roms. No custom recoveries or kernels.
Yeaaa lot of reading done after posting lol. Got safestrap running and recovery. Decided on the golden eye rom. For some reason I lose imei. Created a new Rom slot for it and flashed the module after the rom.
Had this issue on the s3 but can't remember what I did to fix it. If anyone has any ideas let me know.

Since returning to Stock, issues with soft touch keys, particularly the back key

I've been trying some AOSP Roms and Note 5 Roms to see what kind of features I like. I've gone back to Stock, as several Apps I like don't work in Custom and I'm due for an upgrade soon. I have SM-N900W8 (Canada\Telus).
My Back Key doesn't work and my menu button is doing SFinder stuff instead in Lollipop. Here is the messed up part. If I restore back to KitKat, no issues, but even if I upgrade to Lollipop from Kit Kat, issue comes back. I've tried OTA, ODIN Flash, and Samsung Switch\Kies, nothing. If I go back to custom ROM (Most were Darklord Note 5 base, all really good work). The soft keys work.
Be aware I'm still learning the ropes here. I even used Odin to wipe my EFT and NAND my data partition, still nothing. I'm out of ideas. Can anyone point me the right way?

Not Entirely, but I found a Work Around. If I get back to Lollipop, reroot (I use TWRP and SuperSU), and then install a Custom Kernel (I've tested LeanKernel and Arter97), then it works again. I'm going to now try to reflash back to Stock Kernel later this week, and test the results.
Update: Reflashed Stock Kernel provided here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/general/direct-download-bootloaders-modems-t3258803 (Thanks to @jcadduono , very convenient) and same issue, back to Arter97 or Lean Kernel for now. Hoping someone has a fix soon.

I think this might have to do with soft bricking the device, because I updated my rooted n900w8 from 4.4.3 (If im remembering correctly) to 5.0 while still rooted and ended up softbricking it. I think. But I also had to mess around with the BL, AP, and CSC to get it working again. could it be because of that ? has anyone else dealt with this as well?
