Root, tether and international sim - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

So, here's my situation I'm hoping someone can help me
With. I have an ATT S4 that's rooted and the tether hack installed. This works fine for me in the US. I am currently out of the US and figured naturally this should work the same on the carrier for which I bought a local sim for. However, I get an error when I try and activate the tethering, I'm not sure if tethering is normally included with this local carrier and the fact that the tether application is altered and messing it up. Has anyone had a phone rooted with the tether hack that has trouble tethering on International carriers?

I'd try some of the other methods people suggest, like using ES File Manager's Wi-Fi feature.

Native Bluetooth tethering fix on ATT/Straight Talk

Using the native Wifi tether in ICS LPF works fine for me on Straight Talk (ATT MVNO) but the Bluetooth tether would pop up a message
"to enable bluetooth tethering on this device, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611"
There are two ATT plan types from what I understand, those who pay more to get tethering, and those without. I suspect those with tethering don't get this error message, and all Straight Talk plans probably don't have tethering on the account.
After some searching, I read this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13896427&postcount=19 and found something similar to freeze in TiBackup. There's an app called TetheringProvision 1.04.10 that I froze, and now I can do BT tether. Hopefully this might help someone out in the future.

I've never had any issues like this with native BT tethering... Are you on the international unlocked Note or the one from AT&T? TetheringProvision 1.04.10 sounds like AT&T bloatware to me... Precisely the reason I don't ever buy from carriers... EVER!

Questions About WiFi Tethering With The G2

I have the opportunity to buy a Sprint LG G2 but would like some input from this community about the WiFi tethering capabilities of this device. I currently have an LG OG and there are issues with the WiFi tethering on it but I also have an LG Nexus 5 that runs WiFi thethering flawlessly. Since this device is said to be similar to the Nexus 5 I was hoping the Wifi tethering worked well on it also. I use FoxFi WiFi tethering app on most of my devices. It does not work on the LG OG however. I just basically want to know which tethering app works and which one doesn't.
THANKS!!
Sprint completely blocks all tethering access. Even through foxfi and open garden etc. You have to pay for the tethering service. The mobile data is indeed truly unlimited but the catch is its LIMITED to there mobile. As far as I know there is no way around it unless you root the device your wanting to tether but I'm not even positive that will work.

Thanks for your reply but apps like FoxFi allow you to tether without being detected for tethering. You still are deducted for data usage but not tethering. I was mainly asking if tethering apps work on this device because the one I'm getting is on Boost mobile, its not 4G but their 3G is good and for the price its actually great. So, if someone with this device that is rooted would kindly install Foxfi and tell me if it allows you to tether it to your PC I would appreciate it very much....Thanks..
Right I tried it on a unrooted Sprint g2 and I couldn't find ANY workarounds at all. That's what my input was on so yea. Someone else will chime in for you your welcome.
In order to get tethering working on the G2 for Sprint you must be rooted. Instructions are in the sprint develolment forum. Tethering apps do not work. The method is to modify the stock tethering app. Its the only current method available.

I know how to root this device and understand that it needs to be rooted to use wifi tether to make it work. I had a feeling this device had the same problem as the LG OG on tethering....I have TrevE's WiFi Tether on my OG and though I can get internet connection and download regular files, for some reason I can't download torrents and I've tried every setting combination possible. I was hoping this device had the same system as the Nexus 5 and not the OG..
Its titled "native hotspot" cant post links right now. short on time. As far as torrents go all sprint has to do is block torrent sites, and ip addresses associated. If you have tethering and cant do torrents... its likely blocked on sprint's side. Btw, downloading torrents via mobile data is a bad idea and I strongly advise you dont do so for many reasons.

Thanks, I'll try to find the post...I've used wifi tethering on a few different Boost Service (sprint) phones with no problems what so ever....if I used FoxFi Tethering App. I can usb tether using PDAnet and it will work but most of the time I need to be able to use WiFi.
May I ask exactly what your concerns are about downloading torrents via mobile data? I've done it for a couple years now without any problems...
Update: I looked it up and it looks good except that I won't be able to update the Rom at this time...
I dont have concerns about torrents, but you should. Frankly, if you dont know why or havent researched it, Im not one to tell you. Good luck.

Well, I appreciate all your input anyway....I just have to believe there is someone on this forum that has their device flashed to Boost that knows what I am talking about.
I do know what you are talking about. I have a G2. Ive used pdanet and alot of other tethering apps. The thread I pointed you to is the only way to tether on the G2 right now on Sprint, period. There are no other known mods or.apps for tethering on the G2. If that mod will work on Boost I have no idea and I assume there are very few that have a g2 on Boost, if anyone does.

I didn't mean to make it sound like I was saying you didn't know what you were talking about, I apologize if it sounded as if I did. I was just hoping someone here had theirs on Boost and was familiar with how tethering worked on it. From what I can tell reading that thread and the thread on the Rom you have to have for the tethering mod, its pretty stable and the features are good too. I have been trying to figure out what to do because I have the opportunity to get a G2 or HTC One for the same price and am having a hard time making up my mind on which one will work the best for me. I prefer the G2 for its hardware but the development is better on the One. I really appreciate your help though, as I have said before....

Cyanogenmod 11S Tethering anonymity concerns.

My cell carrier Cricket Wireless recently merged with AIO wireless and switched from CDMA to GSM. I was given to March to get a new phone because my Galaxy S3 would not work on their network anymore since they switched to GSM.
Since they merged companies they also came out with all new wireless plans.. I was on the old plan which included tethering..
But I just got a OnePlus One since I needed to buy a GSM phone and had to switch to one of their new plans.. The thing is none of their new plans offer tethering, which is a huge step backwards if you ask me.. If they offered tethering still I would gladly pay for it but they just completely screwed us.. THe made us all buy new phones and gimped our plans and stripped tethering out of them.
My OnePlus One will let me tether since its Cyanogenmod even though my plan of course doesn't have tethering anymore . BUT I am concerned that my carrier will find out I am using my Data for tethering..
Like I said if they still offered tethering I would pay for the plan that would include it but they completely stripped it out of all the plans. I need tethering for work so I'm not happy about it.
I Can use Wifi or Bluetooth tethering and it works but Does anyone know how I can protect myself from my carrier finding out that my data is being used for tethering? I've heard of Foxfi but I can already tether I don't need an app to let me tether I just need something to hide the fact I am. I know it has an addon for wifi tethering using a Proxy is this the best way for me to go? Should I get Foxfi and use Wifi Tethering and the addons Proxy option?
Or is there another way?
Thanks.
you can try switching user agent , google it but it usually doesn't work anymore, carriers knew it too
you may create a vpn tunnel but to avoid detection you'll have to operate the vpn from your phone not your laptop so there would be no way they could tell between the two sources of data, all of your traffic must use the same tunnel.

So maybe installing something on my phone to connect to VPN Book or some other free VPN would suffice? and then tethering my laptop with blueooth. ? Thanks.
I have a Oneplus one on Cricket also, and tether with foxfi, been doing so for about a month with maybe 1-2gb of tethering usage. No problems at all here, got foxfi because I was on Sprint, and I needed it then for sure, as my phone was a sprint phone. Foxfi has an option to hide your tethering usage, and I do use that, but IDK what it actually does.

Unlocked SM-N900T but Mobile Hotspot Is still prevented from functioning freely

Hello, I have a very big issue with my Note 3. I looked into the issue of Mobile Hotspot being restricted even though the phone itself was unlocked through T-Mobile's phone unlocking process.
I really need the mobile hotspot to be used freely since this phone is planned to be used on other countries outside of the United States. In some countries they do not restrict mobile hotspot tethering and you are free to do so just as long as you have the data available. Also this annoys me that in apps like Shareit, I could not use it if I don't have a sim that can use Mobile Data. That screws me up because the app cannot turn on the mobile hotspot.
Would really appreciate help on this very dire situation.
Experiencing countless bootloops already by following that framework-res.apk modding to remove Tethering provision.
Thanks in advance.

A part of your problem can be solved by the free app, Foxit. It turns on the Hotspot for tethering.
I don't know whether the pro version can solve the file sharing while using ShareIt.

Hi. Thanks for the suggestion.
Didn't work. It failed to open it saying the carrier might not allow mobile hotspot.

I've not been around for a while.
I rooted my sm-n900v, unlocked the bootloader, flashed Jasmine 6.1 and voila, the hotspot is unlocked.
See whether you can do same.
Im running stock rom 5.0 rooted and using net 10 service and am able to hot spot to my daughters tablet

Hotspot on s7 without root

have a couple of vzw S7s on old unlimited data plans. One is running 8.0.0 on baseband CRE5. I am trying to figure out a way to enable the mobile hotspot without root, if possible. The trick with ejecting the SIM card and then sliding it back and hitting mobile hotspot doesn't work on this phone as it only stays enabled for a second or two and then once the sim card is back in turns off.
1. What is the best option for enabling hotspot?
2. If it requires a custom rom, is there a stock based rom with this enabled?

You might have luck with some of the non-root roms. Otherwise, you might see if something like FoxFi is updated and working with Oreo. I used that in the past for wifi tether without root. If neither of those are options, a paid usb or bluetooth tether app on play store should work (granted it's not as good as wifi and most of the time requires a third party pc addon)
I would go with a stock based rom. There is only one oreo one right now from jrkruse that takes a moment to install but works really well out of the box.

I am running 8.0.0 CRE5 that I flashed about a week ago on my 930V and have no problem to enable hotspot. I was not able to use it before on a rooted rom, only USB tether. I can bluetooth tether now and hotspot. I cannot USB tether.

Just to be clear, the usb, bluetooth, and wifi tether are all built into Android as a whole. Verizon adds limitations to all three, checking the eligibility of tether against your current plan. IF you pay for tether or have their newer unlimited plan, all three will work. If not, you will need a third party ROM that has edited .prop files that tell the OS to not care. As far as I know, once it's enabled though via .prop edits, it works (including USB tether). For unrooted Verizon S7, even third party apps can USB tether but only via third party applications (and typically a PC program needed as well to make this custom tunnel).

I realize that, maybe it's because I am on the Verizon network thru straight talk and they do not monitor it like verizon.
Hi all. I am in the same boat as the OP. I have the S7E model SM-G935V. I have Oreo CRE5. I am grandfathered into the UDP. Foxfi no longer works for me. How can I get tethering back? I am willing to root and put in a custom ROM if necessary.
I saw someone mention a jrkruse ROM, but I can't find that anywhere. Please help. Thanks in advance!
