can't delete all recent search items in Google Search widget? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on 4.4 - on the search box at the top of every home screen, when i click in it - there's a list of recent search items, that i can't get rid of.
I've tried:
- Deleting all web search history (from https://history.google.com/history/)
- Turning Web History off (from the same link)
- Turning off Chrome sync for history
- Factory resetting phone
It's not a big issue, just a control thing - I'd like to know how to do it if I want to! (i'm sure there used to be a way in older versions of android?)
Thanks in advance :good:

Open chrome browser , go to settings > privacy > clear browser data > select all items on the list > press clear.
Never mind I see you tried the Chrome sync clearing.

Thanks - but that doesn't help - this is the search widget on the homescreens, not Google Chrome. I tried clearing the chrome history anyways to see if they're related and it does nothing.

Did you try deleting the data cache for the search app?
Sent from my Nexus 4

Yep - I even factory-reset the phone.. the search widget must be pulling the history from somewhere. Very strange!

bump! Can anyone at least replicate this issue at all?
Thanks!

Do you use google service "outside" of your mobile phone? In my case I used google search on my macbook (using safari) and all of my recent search is "copied" to my google search widget on my nexus. So I decide to remove all of recent search from google web history on my safari, and it works. The recent search now is gone.
*also try to remove your web history on your mobile chrome
Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion - however I already removed my google web history?

[Q] N7 Google Search problems / general wonkiness

Over the past week+, even before the latest update, Google Search has been acting wonky...
Note: I am often in an environment that isn't ideal for voice searches, so all my searching is initiated by tapping the search bar. I don't know if the problems that I am reporting occur with voice initiated searches...
Many times when I search no search results will come up... it will just sit there...
Clicking on images at the bottom always brings up results and then clicking back on web sometimes 'wakes up' search and produces search results.
Searching from within Chrome by typing a search on the URL bar always works and doesn't exhibit this problem...
What I have done to try to remedy it:
> Uninstalled Google Search updates and gone back to factory
> Force stopped three apps/services and cleared data: search, voice search and google services framework
> Removed and reinstalled my Google Account from the device
None of those steps fixed the problem...
Has anyone else experienced this?
Note: I am totally stock with an unlocked bootloader...
Thanks...

[Q] Change default browser for Google search widget results

On my Nexus 7, Dolphin is my default browser. However, when using the Google search widget, results are displayed in Chrome, and not Dolphin. After the list of results is displayed, then the link opens properly in Dolphin.
This issue would not be so irritating if I could long-press on links in the initial page of results and choose to open the link in a new tab. However, that option is not available, for some reason, so if I want to view several links, I have to keep going back and forth from the initial results page. This is very irritating.
So, simple question: how can I get the Google search widget to open the initial results page in my default Dolphin browser? If this is not possible, then how can I get the links in the search results to open in a new tab?
Thanks for your help.
Still hoping to make this work
I'm still hoping someone can help me figure out how to ensure that search results using the handy Google search widget open in Dolphin browser, which I find to be far better than the stock browser. As I mentioned earlier, once I choose a link, that link opens in Dolphin. However, the search results page does NOT open in Dolphin, and I am unable open a search result in a new tab from the stock browser, which is irritating.
Any ideas?
Can you clear the defaults on either the search widget or the browser and reset them? Maybe that will get them to switch.

Thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I did clear the defaults, which I believe is why the search links open in Dolphin. However, the original search page stubbornly sticks with the inferior stock browser.
This is not a problem with the phone running ICS...just my Nexus 7.
Stock rom, rooted, 4.2.1. If you are rooted there is a way to remove Chrome as the default browser and place the default nexus browser (not chrome) from the nexus phone rom as default. I did this and Voice Search & Google Now open web searches in it. I side-loaded Flash and it works great with that browser. If you want to make Dolphin the default, I don't know about that.
If OP has rooted, stock Rom or otherwise and still has Chrome Browser - go to Store/Play to download free app called "AntTeh App Manager" and use it to freeze Chrome (thus, disabled it) That should allow Dolphin Browser to be the only one - boot into Custom Recovery & wipe dalvik cache to be sure, restart - and all searches should be going to the Dolphin.
I am using Boat Browser & Google Search and/or Voice Search, etc. will launch & show results in it. (rooted Stock 4.1.2 - franco kernel)
You can unfreeze Chrome & go back to it anytime as you wish as it's not deleted, just hidden & will no longer shown on the Apps list, unless re-enabled.

[Q] Clear on-device history

Hi,
I was wondering how the heck can you delete on-device search history on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1?
I tried to delete the search history within the browser but I still see search history when I go on the Internet.
Can you help?
Best regards to all!
Please be more specific. Do you mean in the browser, search history comes up, or are prior searches suggested in the panel above the keyboard as you are typing?
For browser, I suggest settings > application manager > Internet> clear cache, clear data This may not be sufficient if you log into Chrome, for example, from more than one device with the same login
For suggestions, settings> application manager> samsung keyboard> clear cache, clear data **Warning** this will probably clear your personal dictionary too. Once you use the keyboard again, you'll get a notice that "samsung keyboard can record keystrokes (or something like that) follow these steps to disable" follow those steps.
If you mean something else entirely, please post specifically.

[Q] Google Play Music 5.2 : artist/album art lost, advance settings too

I live in Canada and have been using Google Play Music cloud storage since forever (with the tricky method listed here)
Since I updated to version 4.2, artist and album art have disappeared, along with the settings concerning downloading and streaming music (see attached thumbnails below).
Am I the only one that have been getting this ? Is it region specific ? Is there a turnaroud, other than downgrading to a previous version, to regain what was lost ?

I have the same problem and I live in Germany. I switched to a previous version and wait for a bugfix from Google.
Best regards,
Christoph
Same problem here on Nexus 7 2013 just happened yesterday. I uninstalled went back to previous version and all is good now. I also live in Canada.
Hey, same issue here, in Canada. If you tap the connect to google play using (Insert Gmail account here) the options will return, perhaps with the album art, but it will likely happen again. I think there's a bug with the account system. Also, is anyone else having difficulties with the download queue option? It crashes the app for me.

I'm having the same problem with album art in Canada. Plus, it seems not to sync any new music after the initial sync. I hope this isn't Google locking out international users. I use my Play Music cloud storage every day and I'd hate to have to find another app.
Yeah, just checked, if you aren't seeing album art, go to settings and tap connect with (Insert your gmail account address here), and it should fix it. Hopefully this gets fixed soon, and we get Play Music in more countries (Like Canada).

Thanks for the tip. This fixed the art issues and enabled me to create instant mixes again (which I had also noticed was gone). Is this something that I need to do regularly now? Are there issues with sync/pinning music to my device?
Definitely some issues up with international (mostly Canadians so far) accounts utilizing Play Music when we "shouldn't" be it would appear. They really need to start getting their service into the North!

There shouldn't be any issues with synchronizing music, as far as I can tell. As to how often you'll have to do this, no idea, but whenever it happens you will probably notice that most of the options in the left side menu are gone. Just log back in and everything should be groovy.
Maybe this is happening because Google is setting up to launch Play Music in Canada? I certainly hope so.

Are you saying this permanently fixes it? Or just fixes it as far as you can tell?

Down here in the Caribbean I'm having the same issue. I'm on a Galaxy S3 i9300 running CM 10.2. It started after I updated to the latest version. I tried clearing the app data, rebooting and even removing and readding my Google account to the device. Nothing I've tried fixes it permanently.
Yeah, neither is a permanent fix, so we just have to work with what we've got until it gets fixed. Sucks, but it's better than nothing.

Hello!
I have a similar issue (using this custom ROM), but this is only for some of the albums, some uploaded by me and some from the all access catalog, maybe half of my library is showing the album art correctly, including uploaded and google catalog tracks, although in the browser client all of them are displayed fine. I'll try going back to stock, but it would be really helpful if you could provide me some other suggestions before doing that. I reached Google helpdesk, and they gave me following instructions, but none of them helped me, hopefully someone may find them helpful:
First, try refreshing your library in the Google Play Music application, by going to Menu > Refresh and also verify that the app is set to display 'All music':
At the top of the page for the Listen Now, My Library, and Playlists sections you'll see either "All music" or "On device" under the name of the section.
If 'On device' is displayed, tap the triangle and select 'All music.'
If this doesn't resolve the issue, please confirm that you've set the Google Play Music app to sync:
Return to your device's Home screen and go to: Menu > Settings > Accounts & sync.
Confirm that 'Auto-sync' is enabled (box should be checked).
Directly below the Auto-sync option, be sure the account you'd like synced with Google Play is checked.
Touch the Google Account you're using with Google Play.
Enable 'Sync Music' (if available). If it's not available, please follow the rest of the steps, leaving Auto-sync enabled.
On newer devices the steps may be slightly different:
Return to your device's Home screen and go to: Menu > Settings > Accounts.
Select the type of account that you're using with Google Play Music.
Select the specific account that you're using.
Make sure the box next to Google Play Music is checked.
Finally, if your music still doesn't display after confirming that the Music app is syncing, try clearing the Google Play Music app's data and cache:
From the device's home screen, go to Menu > Settings > Apps > 'All' tab.
Select 'Google Play Music' from the list of apps.
Tap 'Clear data' and 'Clear cache.' Note: After doing so, the app will need to re-sync with your Google Play music library for your music to appear. This may take a few minutes.
Here are a few more simple steps that can usually resolve issues with the Google Play Music app. It looks like you've already tried a few of these in the past but I'd like for you to try them once again to see if anything helps. Please let me know if this changes anything for you.
* Power off your device and turn it back on. In many cases, restarting the device resolves issues with an application.
* Clearing the Google Play Music app's data:
1. From the device's home screen, press Menu > Settings > Application Manager > 'All' tab
2. Select Google Play Music from the list of apps
3. Press 'Clear data'
Note: After doing so, the app will need to re-sync with your Google Play music library for your music to appear. This may take a few minutes.
* Uninstall and reinstall the app update:
1. From your device's home screen, press Menu > Settings > Application Manager > 'All' tab
2. Select Google Play Music from the list of apps
3. Press 'Uninstall updates'
4. Open the Play Store app and search for "Google Play Music". Install the Google Play Music app update then reboot your device.

Do you think this is related to the region of the ROM? I tried some EU based custom rom, and it showed all the album art fine, but I'm having this issue with this ROM
How did you get the cloud storage? I'm canadian, I live in Québec and I can't find this feature on my 2 devices (Asus TF300T and HTC Amaze 4G) ... When I try to access the Play Music web site, the message on the page is "The Google Play music player is currently available in select territories.". Anybody have solution ?
Thx !
Google music outsite US
Basically, you have to make Google servers "think" you "actually" are in US territory to activate the service. Just google "Google music outsite US", you'll find lots of strategies, ex : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1757991

Browser Google Search Links Suddenly Redirecting to Google Play Store App Pages

So for the past few days, when I do a google search in the stock browser on my S5, certain sites (I'm guessing only sites that have Play Store apps) are redirecting me to their play store app page... To be clear, I'll search for something and get a result that should link me to IMDB.COM -- but if I click that result, I get send to the IMDB APP page on Google Play... If I hold down the link and hit OPEN or OPEN IN NEW TAB, it will actually take me to the sites mobile page in the browser like normal.
Any idea what's causing this? I've cleared the browser cash and data, I've cleared Play Store defaults as well. I've tried removing all the individual web page settings inside the browser. I've done a ton of searches and found nothing.
I've actually now noticed that every time I try to link to a youtube video from a google search it just goes to "webpage not available." Again, if hold down on the link and hit OPEN or OPEN IN NEW TAB, it works...
This just started happening out of the blue and I have no idea what changed... And it's super annoying.
Any help greatly appreciated!
I agree. the same thing has happened to me and my wife's phone. When we google search in a browser on our androids, many links will direct back to the "play store" app. Same symptoms and reactions, when long tapping the links to open in new tab, the function works perfectly. And another temporary solution is to activate "desktop mode" if available in the browser, and it won't open the app store, but of course, depending on your device and the browser app, desktop mode can be a little sluggish
Please XDA developers, if any of you know how to solve this issue please let us know. Otherwise it'll be safe to assume that google is leveled up their reign of terror, beginning at relentlessly invading privacy, and now hijacking user experience by literary using actual malware techniques.

Nope, this is different. The article talks about the option of installing apps directly from search results (i.e. the user sees an "install" button inline with search results). Whereas here, the search results themselves are redirecting to the Play store, with no option to keep browsing the link in the browser.

Yes, which could be related to the roll out / bugs during it
Seems slightly coincidental that Google search results are redirecting to the play store, at the same time as Google is rolling out the ability to install apps directly from the results

This has suddenly fixed itself... Links now working normally again for me. Strange. Seems like this might have been some Google roll out bug as Detection mentioned.
Anyway, working for now. My Youtube links still only open in browser (instead of in app) but I'll live with that, I guess.
Thanks!

Check in settings > default applications, that the browser is not set as default for youtube, if it is, clear it, and next time you open a youtube link, it should give the option to choose the app and set that as default
Or reinstall the YT app, and it should auto clear the default

Is it possible that google has superior control over any android device, regardless of the type of rom? where If google wanted to, they can roll out some crazy beta test on everyone's devices and then stop it again, after they've collected enough information from their tests? Whereby making useless the option an android owner gets for allowing google to monitor their device for app malfunctions or not.
My browser is acting normal now too. It seems really weird that a very particular action that is mostly found in malware was forcefully applied to our android browsers, (i don't use chrome, bur the default browser app in my stock rom) for the same amount of time before being taken away. And i know for a fact that it wasn't with anything i've done. Owning android devices for a very long time now (and customizing the such and PCs too) is more than enough experience for me to know that this is no accident, nor foul interpretation of settings on my part.
Just how worthless have these systems and devices become? Is there any safety left anywhere?
