[problem] NST will not go past 'Read Forever' screen, despite formats/factor resets - Nook Touch General

As my title says, the problem with my nook simple touch is that it will not go past the 'Read Forever' Screen.
Yes I have reset the device 8 times and watched the device reformat itself, it still does not go past the 'read forever' screen
The screen is responsive, because the clockwork mod (run off my SD card) navigates just fine
factory formats and manual formats (via clockworks), still do not get it past the read forever screen, although it says installation was successful.
I think the storage for my NST is the issue, and I want to exhaust all my options before spending $40 to trade in for a new one.
I have two questions
Is there a fix for my scenario?
Is it possible to boot straight from the SD card, bypassing my corrupt internal drive? some OS/thing that can be run right off the SD?
I just want to read books on my nook from my SD card, if I can get that I will be happy.

Does anyone have a solution?
I have a feeling my device is bricked, because even when I put touchnooter on my SD card and into my nook, the screen doesn't flash black as it is supposed to.

I would say if CWM recovery works then the hardware is mostly ok.
You could have screwed up the partitioning, that will prevent many things from working.
Try mounting everything in CWM, see if that work.

Hey,
I was able to mount everything except /data and /sd-ext, I got an "Error mounting" message.

First, if you can access /rom, adb pull everything and put it in a safe place on your desktop.
Um, I think that CWM has an option to format a partition?
Format /data.
Don't worry about sd-whatever. The stock CWM recovery has a strange config.
Then do a factory format.

I'm getting an error when i try to format /data, would that mean its permanently corrupt?

Do you have ADB over USB to the CWM?
If not, get that going. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/BN_Nook_Simple_Touch/Installing_ADB
Did you safely save away the files in /rom?
What error do you get when formatting?
Did you use a command like this?
Code:
busybox mkfs.ext2 -L data /dev/block/mmcblk1p8

After a few hours of trying--I just cant get the ADB working for my nook through CWM. Three different tutorials on how to set it up and still my computer doesn't detect the nook ADB.
I do not know how to access /rom, so no I have never saved it.
The error I get when formatting /data in CWM is "Error formatting /data!"
My device got stuck on this read forever bootloop out of nowhere. One day I was using it, then i don't use it for a week, and when I start it up again, its in a bootloop, and no reformatting seems to get it out of it.

With the Nook connected, check the device manager (devmgmt.msc).
There should be a line at the top for "Android Phone".
Treed off of that should be "Android Composite ADB Interface".
On your taskbar the little USB icon should have "Safely disconnect Android Composite ADB Interface".
Did you get this much working at least?

HELP!!! screwed up my MyTouch 3G

I have the MyTouch 3G with the Cyanogen Recover 1.4.
I had the latest CyanogenMod 4.2.7 with no problems. I tried applying the Enoch theme 1.4.7 and it put my phone in a boot loop. I tried factory wiping. I don't have access to any of the cyanogenmod zip files on my SD card because the Cyanogen Updater doesn't put it on the root directory of the SD.
So is there a way to fix this? Get back to any build of the phone to work? Can I access the SD card if I connect it via USB to my PC? PLEASE HELP!!!!
dannyfal!
i don t know if I undersoot you fully.BUT>>>> sometimes the SD card plays crazy,or get dammaged easy.In case you see the files on a computer but your phone is unable to read them is no big problem. If your phone is in bootloader mode and stucked there,it is a bit bigger problem.Have you ever applyed the hard reset ???It helps a lot. After that the SD card recognized by the phone as memory card2.So the phone is looking for the simple name SD MMEMORY.Or sd card. This is just matter of time. You give a name ending sd crad.bat and you can erase this bad sector data.In this case you might loose the program and your important data with it.BUT>>> you save sd card, and other files on it.
If you can t make it work coz your phone is in boot loader modus, than you need professional help. And a new rom update.
helos * hopr helped somehow*

You can enable usb mode in Cyanogen's recovery image by connecting the usb cable, dropping in to the console and typing (without quotes) "ums_enable" move your ROM and when you're done "ums_disable"
then "reboot recovery" and reflash.
If you don't have a computer you can use the console to my the files.
mount /sdcard <- Mounts the fat32 partition
ls <- See what files/folders are in the current directory
cd nameoffolder < change directory
then once you're in the folder where the ROMs are stored (cm-update, I believe) you can either move or copy them to the root.
use 'ls' again to find the filenanme of the ROM you want to copy/move..
cp name-of-rom.zip /sdcard <- to copy the ROM to the root, or use 'mv' to move the file.
EDIT: I am an idiot. You're on a MyTouch so you can't use the console in recovery. In that case connect your phone to your computer (which has the sdk setup with drivers) and type the commands I stated about after 'adb shell'

Mounting SD card's FAT32 partition from console.

First of all, I am running Cyanogen Mod 4.2.15.1, with RA recovery v1.52R and I have a properly partitioned SD card for apps2sd.
My question/problem is this:
I have 2 SD cards, the first one I have setup to use regularly with my phone, and is partitioned properly for apps2sd. The second one I have formatted and setup as a ubuntu USB boot disk.
My intention is this, whenever I need to use a random computer, at work or friends house, etc, it would be super if I could shut my phone down, switch to my boot SD card, boot into recovery, enable the USB-Mass Storage option, and boot the computer from USB into Ubuntu. I have the SD card set up with a persistence file so I can even save stuff in my linux environment. This is all fine and dandy, and works well. It's actually really cool to have a bootable linux environment right in my pocket with me everywhere I go...
To take it to the next level, I would like to be able to actually boot my phone, so it doesn't have to sit in recovery while I'm using the computer. This way I can even turn on "Wireless Tether for Root Users" and have Ubuntu with network on the go. I've tried partitioning my SD card, putting my apps on it, and using the FAT32 partition for the Ubuntu boot disk, The only problem with this is, I can't make the FAT32 partition available to the computer before it is plugged in. (I have to mount it when the notification pops up, which is usually too late) So I figured I will enable USB-MS from RA Recovery, let it boot to Ubuntu, and once it's loaded, I'll reboot my phone, and mount again in android, then continue using the computer, but I think because the card is partitioned, BIOS isn't recognizing it as a boot drive.
So how do I mount the FAT32 partition from inside Cyanogen's 4.2.15.1 Mod? (or even from recovery?) before the computer is even connected? I need it to be available right when the computer turns on.
Any suggestions would be super, I love the idea that I can carry around a linux distro with me everywhere I go, especially coupled with a wireless connection.
Thank you!

[Q] What did I do?

I was running the Fresh 2.4.0 Rom. I could not install apps to the SD card. I decided to reformat my partition...I ended up reformatting every option there was
I am not able to get past the HTC screen, or copy recovery images to the SD card.
I do seem to have access to the ADB. I hope I am not way over my head with this.
Thanks,
Craig
If you have adb access you should be alright just flash a recovery and then flash a rom.
Can you adb remount and then adb shell?
yes, i can get to the ADB shell, but when i try to push the recovery image, tehn i am still lost, the phone reboots, and the white HTC screen.
i did somehow get the Fresh Rom onto the SD card and I am in the process of rebooting now. Not sure what I did different, but the SD card showed op as a removable drive, right above the Hero Icon drive. I was then able to drag the files to the Root SD and reinstall the ROM.
I seem to have a full install of the Fresh Rom 2.4.0 now.

Stuck on Rooted Forever, NST not recoginsed by PC

Decided to try a rooted NST again so I backed up my non-rooted image using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15115162&postcount=2.
Didn't like the rooted experience so I tried to restore using the instructions above, got as far as deleting all of the partitions. When I tried to restore the image using Win32diskimager I realised that my Win7 laptop was no longer reading the nook. I've tried other PCs but I've not had any look in getting any of them to recognise the NST.
So my NST is now stuck on Rooted Forever and is not recogised by my computer so I can't restore my backup. Any help would be appreciated.
Tried plugging it in to the laptop this morning and pressing the Power and n button together. The Rooted Forever went away, so the screen is now blank and the light that was previously showing only green turned to orange.
Continuous pressing of the Power button causes the light to turn green, screen to flash, then turn back orange. NST still not being recognised by the laptop however. Help?
I'm unclear on exactly what you did.
In any case, there is almost no reason to ever delete partitions on anything.
Put noogie on an SD. Insert SD. Boot. Connect on USB.
Use Win32DiskImager to write your backup onto the Nook.
Remove SD. Boot.
Thanks for your reply. I deleted the partitions because of
To restore your backup:
(Boot Nook with the noogie sd)
Run Partition Wizard and delete all partitions on your Nook. Careful in disk selection here, wiping the wrong drive could be catastrophic! This is required, because DiskImager won't write to a partitioned drive.
Okay I tried what you said. I'm seeing Removable Disk in My Computer but clicking it gives me Please insert a disk into Removable Disk. Win32diskimager is showing no devices.
Win32diskimager doesn't care at all what partitions are on your device.
It writes physical data onto a device.
How is it that the Window (File) Explorer is showing a drive letter and W32DI can't see it?
Is the Nook showing "Rooted Forever"?
I believe noogie does two mounts but the second one is inactive.
Check your desktop for all drive letters. Use "Disk Management".
Yes nook is showing Rooted Forever.
In Disk Management, I'm seeing 'Disk 1 Removable 1.83 Online' and it shows 1.83 Unallocated. And 'Disk 2 Removable (F No Media'. (F is the letter drive I'm seeing in Windows File Explorer.
Well, that's your problem, deleting the partitions stops Windows from recognizing it enough to give it a letter.
In disk management see if you can assign it a drive letter (on Disk1)
If you can't, do a quick format in disk management.
It doesn't matter what kind or how as long as you can assign a drive letter when you are done.
Yes, that was exactly the problem. Restored backup and it's up and running now.
Thanks for all the help, now I know what not to do lol.

[Q] I deleted partitions and my nook got "bricked"

I'm so desperate because I deleted the partitions from my nook with these instructions :
---you can google it and the first link it is--->> "how-to-backup-and-restore-nook-glow-and-nook-simple-touch"
So... I think my backup wasn't well written :S or something like that.
When I deleted the partitions, EVERYTHING went to hell... My nook is actually freeze, my computer doesn't recognize it at all when I plug the cable. My nook just turn the tiny light on, what means it is charging.
---------->Now, my doubt is: is there any hope to my case? how can I fix it? )= how can i make my lap recognizes the nook reader?
Is there any backup file to write on a sd card?
I press the button to turn it on but anything happens.
I've tried nookmanager(this one couldn't make a restore backup nor factory.zip) and the "alpha format touch" (this one tells there's a lack o "log", and a few more files.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
So if you followed those directions you should have ended up with a file on your desktop about 1.9 gigabytes, right?
(If you have a DVD burner, burn that to a DVD, it will make me feel better.)
Why, oh, why do people delete partitions?
You still have the SD card with the Noogie on it, right?
That will still boot up saying "Rooted Forever"?
Now use WinImage (or whatever you used) to write the image back to the Nook.

YES, I hvae the noogie in my sdcard
I also have my file with 1.8gb but i've tried to write it on the sd card but I don't know what happened, it seems like the file was empty :S because when I put the sd card into the nook and try to turn it on the screen still says:" Rooted for ever", even if I press the button a few seconds (maybe 30 seconds)
If I try to open the 1.8gb file with winimage, there's something like the image
it takes more?
You don't write your 1.9 GB file to an SD card, you write it to the Nook internal memory.
With the Nook booted up on the SD card with Noogie, connect USB and use your utility to copy the 1.9 GB to the Nook.
What you showed in your snapshot does not look promising.
You might have done the backup after the Nook was trashed or else corrupted the backup.
Be careful with that 1.9 GB file, you do not want to lose it.

Thank you for your advice.
Maybe you are right: I didn't create the backup img. as it should be.
Now, i'm wondering if there anybody who wants to share a backup image from a "good" nook and mail it me.
Do you know someone ? T___T Please!!, I'd really appreciate it!
You really don't want to use an image from another device as are there are device specific things on the image. Slow down and don't be in a hurry to find another image yet. You might not be in as bad of shape as you think. 1.8GB is the right size for a backup so you may be OK. As Renate said - DON'T LOSE IT.
Now a couple of things. You said you wrote the image to the SD card and rebooted the device with the SD card in the device. As Renate pointed out this isn't how you restore. And once you finish restoring you reboot without the SD card in the device - if you've got a Noogie card in the device it will always boot the Rooted Forever.
I question whether the WinImage screen shot you posted is actually from your backup. With the size partitions its showing a 1.8GB image file seems quite a bit on the small side. In any event it can't hurt at this point to try a proper restore to the Nook and see if it works. Have you followed the instructions on the page you poitned to to restore your backup:
3. Plug your Nook into your computer with the USB cable.
4. ... instructions on deleting partitions... You already did this, no need to do it again
5. To restore, open Roadkil’s DiskImage software. Use the “Write Image” tab this time and select the Nook Drive from the drop-down list. Select the source file, the backup image you created earlier, and hit start to restore.
6. When the restore is finished, you can disconnect your Nook from the computer and remove the noogie microSD card and reboot.
Try it and report back.
Actually I realy want a nook backup, another backup ( I think there's not another worst thing than this one =s ), because I've tried lots of times the steps you have described and dont work. Actualy my pc doesn't recognize when I plug the nook in.
**When I do the step #5 my nook doesn't response, just appears the well known image: "rooted for ever", but does not turn on, even if I press the button for a long time**
Please, I think I really need another backup image )=
Well, I hope your advice.
