Wifi Hotspot Issue - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I installed KitKat factory images last friday and apart from a few FCs with some apps, everything was running fine. It was like this until i needed to use the phone as a wifi hotspot.
Computers can connect to the phone, but they can´t reach the Internet. I tried all tethering methods available: wifi, USB and bluetooth. No one of them worked.
So, i went to google and downloaded KRT16S (the one i had was KRT16O) and USB tethering started working just fine (it was not in the previous release). WIFI hotspot is still the same though. Machines can successfully connect to the phone but they can´t browse the Internet. A friend of mine using the same carrier as me confirmed it was not operator blocking internet connection sharing (anyway, USB works...).
Could anyone do some testing and report here? Thank you very much!!

I'm having the same issue with Bruce's CM11 Nightlies. I'm on T-Mobile with a tethering plan to boot.

I'm having the same issue with Bruce's CM11 Nightlies. I'm on T-Mobile with a tethering plan to boot.
I dug a little deeper, and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2512674&page=8 resolved it, but you need to be rooted.
It seems to be a combination of a settings change with 4.4, and a change on T-Mobile's end as well. Just as many people seem to have resolved this by calling T-Mobile and having them make sure their account is provisioned properly.

That didn´t seem to work here. Still no Internet when using WIFI hotspot. While i know it´s easy to install a custom rom i would like it work out of the box with a stock rom, the way it should be. Maybe i´ll try to downgrade to 4.3 and see how it goes. Meanwhile, if someone has something else to add...
thx

If I were to guess, it's due to the fact that 4.4 now specifically checks to see if you are provisioned for tethering if you are on T-Mobile, and even though almost all plans on T-Mobile include tethering now, it may be that due to the recent plan changes at T-Mobile some accounts may be provisioned incorrectly.
I'm going to have T-Mobile check my account, because even though it's working for me now, I am curious.

Just to add something... Im not on t-mobile. I'm from Brazil and my carrier is Oi.

Ok...upon further testing it is almost certain that it´s something related to the notebook i was trying to connect with the phone. Just did some testing with my desktop computer and it worked just fine with a stock install of KK. I don´t know why that same notebook connected to the internet when i tried tethering with a friend´s iPhone 5. Anyway, all appears to be ok and carrier block is ruled out.
Thank you all for the valuable input!!
you rock

sprint hot spot is free?

Hey everyone,
im new to the android OS. i rooted the phone and today i decided to mess with the sprint hot spot feature. i wasnt prompt any error codes or have any fee agreement pop up. i simply click activate and bamm, wifi. so the question is, would i be charge the $30 since nothing was prompt or is it a sneaky thing sprint do and bill me later? or maybe it was a feature one click root did. thanks for the answer. i tried to search but couldnt find a solid answer.
I'd be careful with that! Might be getting that $30 fee added on as a surprise. If you are rooted, you don't need hotspot, just download Wifi tether from the market. it's free for sure. no surprises!
I also second that, I would stay away from the Orig Sprint Hotspot feature if you are not paying for it. Dont be surprise if you see a $30 charge on the bill, like stated above from jirafabo just root like you did already and use the wifi tether program if you really need some sort of wifi tethering. It operates on the "N" 802.11 network so as long as your laptop can see a "N" network you can connect.
alrighty. by any chance anyone figure out how to make the phone tether over usb by using the option already available once plugged in? i dont have wireless N and just want a one click system.
I don't think wifi tether uses N. It should work with the usual a//b/g channels
Sent from my Epic 4G
you can try wifi tether and see if you dont broadcast on the "n" network, but when I go over the wifi icon on the laptop the epic is running radio 802.11n adhoc network.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756804 <----now you can install this, it run on the 802.11g radio infrastrucrture mode. This is what I use since my companys laptop will not connect to wifi adhoc.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803335 <-----found this for you, it is a kernel what will allow usb tethering if you will like to try.

Did you try using it as a hotspot? Mine starts up without any prompts and I can see if from the computer but I can't get on the internet. I noticed that as soon as I activate the hotspot it kills the 3g signal. I assumed this was Sprints way of protecting it. I didn't think it was a problem on my end.
I have been using mine rooted for a while with the wireless tether app 2.0.9pre5 (i think). I think this is just because of the signal quality i'm getting, but my 3G speeds are only around .5mbps down and .3mbps up (if i'm lucky, lol). Anyone else getting anything faster? I have only been on sprint for a couple months now and prior to that, i had AT&T, which seemed a bit faster. I realize there are differences between the networks, but i would have figured EVDO to be nearly the same speed.

The built in USB tether doesn't work for me (I don't have the PAM/hot spot add on).
But I use Easy Tether for USB tethering. It works fine. Google it.
I'm on basic data plan and not rooted.

Okay, just installed this on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a charm.
Wifi Tether is a nice app, but the solution above is hands-down superior and the way to go. Very simple, works in infrastructure mode so it will act as an AP for anything, and is nicely integrated in with the rest of the software through the settings panel.
This is DA BOMB!
One question from a noob, though: I applied this MOD through clockworkrecovery, the same way I flashed the MixUp kernel. This didn't replace the kernel or anything, right? I'm not running a different kernel now, am I?

No it didn't...recovery flashing = just replacing the files in the zip to the ones in your system...in this case it replaced only the MobileAP.apk and a few other files..and thats it. The kernel should be fine.

Can't connect to Google services.

I've never had this happen before, I can't get my phone to connect to Google services. Some Google apps are still working and sync is working. The only app I ran across that doesn't seem to work is Talk. It also seems my data is slow to respond to me accessing something on the internet, it will just sit at the 3G signal and do nothing for a while.
When I first flash everything runs great until I reboot then the connection issue starts. Anyone got any ideas?
Running AOKP nightlies, and I've tried several different versions.
Latest Faux kernel.

I always used to have issues with GTalk when restoring from TB after flashing a new ROM. I suggest to never back up GAPPS when flashing ROM's. If that's what you did... wipe everything again and start over but do not restore GTalk. Hope that works for you.
What carrier are you on?
Double check your APN settings (Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Access Point Names)
If it's WiFi, it's probably a ROM-thing. Reflash or use another one

T-Mobile. I didn't get too check the APNs before I restored from a previous version. It looks like a AOKP build from Dec 24 and its got Faux working on it perfectly. I'll try another build at a later date unless someone has any advice that I can try.
Bumping for hopeful solution to this. I've tried running JellyBro, JellyBeer, newer AOKP and even an older Gapps. I can't seem to solve this problem. ANY info would be appreciated.
Edit: So taking out my sim card and letting the N4 sit on wifi does the trick but as soon as I put the sim card back in it continues to have problems. This leads me to believe its the sim card so i put it into my Gnex and it works just fine...
Bumping again for anyone who has any ideas on how to fix this. Haven't been able to even use my Nexus yet since I've gotten it because of this.

Can't tether my laptop to my rogers nexus 4?

Hey guys
I have a nexus 4 going through rogers wireless, i have a 6gb data plan as well. I am using the wifi hot spot setting and creating the wifi network for my laptop. My laptop connects no problem and shows full signal, however I can't seem to surf the Web or do anything.
The laptop connects fine to my home network, and the nexus 4 is updated to the latest firmware. It is also stock and not rooted, any help?
Just to add, i do not have LTE, this is a regular data plan and tether
I'm not going to much help myself, sorry. My hotspot worked fine out of the box (I'm with Mobilicity), though I recall that I had to set up a password for it to start working correctly. Have you tried USB tethering for the sake of troubleshooting?
Just tried to tether via usb and no connection either!
I am on Rogers, my WiFi tether works fine, I don;t think it maters what data plan you have, I have a 10GB 3 year old plan. But It has to be ion WAP2 security, if you don;t do the password it won't work.
My USB tether only worked through this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pdanet&hl=en
You need to have it on the PC as well http://pdanet.co/
Re: WiFi, I know you saying you don;t have LTE, but just to make sure go to dial pad and type in *#*#4636#*#* and make sure towards the bottom WCDMA Proffered is selected. Then check that your APN is not ltemobile.apn in settings.
Also sometimes it helps to do a trouble shoot on the connection in windows, rarely but sometimes it works from second third time.
Try PDAnet, I think it has WiFi tethering as well.

very strange: so,
What's the set up you have, ROM/KERNEL/RADIO/GAPPS?
For the test of it, if you want, I had this and it worked, you can just back up and flash this set ups:
ROM: Slim or RootBox
Kernel: Harsh
GAPPS: Slim or Banks
Radio: .33 (I have not tested it on .48)
Also if your usb tethering did not work with the PDANet, then probably something wrong in the ROM. USB tether needs drivers so if they are not installed properly will be a probably, but since WifI is not working as well I a pretty sure it's a ROM problem, maybe you just need to to do a clean flash of a similar in features ROM to what you are using now.
If you really like the one you using now, one good idea would be to do a logcat right after it connects and you can;t brows the web, and submit that to the dev thread of the ROM.

Appreciate the assistance
My phone is 100% stock and I don't want to tinker with it, I was hoping it would work as promised out of the box, is it the latest update of jelly bean causing issues?
sometimes the provider blocks tethering until you buy their tether plan. even though some people say it works fine, you could still be one of the few that were blocked. i tethered for four years fine, until one day tmobile blocked it until i bought a tethering plan.
Every time I tether my N4 I have to go the through Windows trouble shooting process, it never connects right the first time.

Rogers said that any plan over 1gb of data is automatically allowed to tether
Try checking your APN settings (do a APN reset). If you have more than one, it may be using the wrong one.

Right Rogers does not block it and its free.
It maybe the new radio, but since you are not rooted, not much you can do.
One thing is try a tethering app in play store it does not need root.
Two, do a factory reset in settings somewhere.
Try changing the APN to ltemobile.apn it may work better.
Last resort is to email Google support maybe they will answer.
But also like previously mentioned do troubleshoot the connection in windows maybe few times.
Also try WAP, and no password at all.

Ok here we go:
So I am sorry I did not remember this sooner, but my friend had this issue and here is the problem and solution.
I can only speak for Rogers, other carrier maybe different. The problem is with data package but not that tethering is not active (it is by default on Rogers) but that the data is wrong. Most likely you had an Iphone or Blackberry before, or one of these devices is still listed on your account as primary(you can;t change that, they just go by what did you buy from them last, then won;t put Nexus on it).
So with Rogers there 3 different data sets, for Iphone, for BB and for Android, you need obviously Android and you don't have it.
There probably some differences but the major once is that on BB one you get free LTE on android (on older once) but it wont tether probably with other devices,(actually my friend prefers LTE over tether so he capt BB plant on Note 2)
What you do is, call Rogers Tech support,(preferably not from your phone, so you can test it at the same time) don't tell them you have nexus 4, tell them it's S3 or Note 2(just a device they actually sell)tell them that you have (depending on your previous phone with them) the Iphone or BB data there, and you need them to change it to Android as your tethering not working. They can say what ever they want, but make sure they change it, even if they say it's BS, still ask them to remove and add it, but they should know what are you talking about. If the guy is a real stubborn, asking to put on a different data plan, like flex or something just to try (make sure any changes they make don;t interfere with your payment or discounts on the account)
Once the guy/girl says it's done, turn off your phone after 30 sec. turn it back on and check if it works.
Worst comes to worst, which is shouldn't because I know for a fact they have three different datas, ask to speak to Customer Relations Department, tell them your friend had the same problem and that's how rogers fixed it.
In fact, no mater if the Tech fixes it or not still speak to Customer Rel. Dept. and just tell them that you are not happy with the data, it gives you problems, and that Telus offered you a same plan for cheaper and $350 credit for cancellation fee if you move, so you would like to see if you can get $15 off your plan.
Hope that helps.
Thank you!
After dealing with 4 customer service reps, all telling me everything was fine, I called, used your advice, and everything is working.
This was also affecting my MMS messaging, not just tethering.

Amazing! I looked for solution for a while now, couldn't find it anywhere, and yours worked like a charm!
Although I'm from Israel and my phone carrier is Pelephone, it was my problem aswell. I contacted them few times about tethering without success, they said it can't be blocked by them, neither they have special data plan for that. After I read this post I contacted them again and asked them to set my phone as Nexus 4 on their data base. I turned off my nexus, wait a few, turned on, tried again and it finnaly worked!!
Many thanks!! I'm surprised this issue isn't so common on the Internet.

As far as I know, my nexus 4 is not lte compatible.... Now are you asking if my Rogers plan is an lte plan? My nexus 4 shows H or 3g

VoIP over mobile network problem

The details:
So I recently acquired my Nexus 4 on the T-Mobile $30 plan, coming from it's brother the Optimus G on Sprint.
It is rooted and running CM11 and I have been using Spare Phone and GrooveIP for VoIP calls with no problems whatsoever. I finally decided to pull the trigger and use the Play Store app to add LTE support since my area supports it. Got that working too so I'm feeling good, but I realized shortly after that I cannot make a VoIP call over data now. WiFi still works perfectly, but on data it will ring and connect but there is no audio sent or received from either party.
I reverted back to my working backup with no luck so I did the adb/fastboot method of returning the phone to the stock image and then rerooting, reinstalling the rom and then testing VoIP over data and still no luck. I then proceeded to reinable LTE and it works again.
So in short, I tried to revert to stock modem and APN settings with no luck, but I am currently on the .98/.33 hybrid modem with the fast.t-mobile apn settings again. Also not sure if something in the *#*#INFO#*#* menu could have messed it up, but that's why I reverted to stock...
The question:
Is there any other reason all of my VoIP apps would stop working over mobile data, but still work on WiFi?

A few people including myself have been discussing this issue in the thread I linked below. We haven't really found much out, though it seems that it is T-Mobile at fault when you consider all of the variables. Here is an argument by user Ztone:
"What helped me was arguing that I know five other users who's issue started happening exactly at the same time and only on T Mobile's network. There are only 4 components to this: the phone, groove IP, Google and T Mobile. It cannot be the phone or groove IP if many others are experiencing the same thing at the same time (not to mention the fact that I had wipe the phone and reinstalled everything clean). It can't be Google because then it wouldn't work on wifi. This leaves T Mobile. My Tech troubleshooter from t-mobile had me delete the data from Google IP and restart the phone. While I had the phone off she did something on her end to refresh something on T Mobile's network regarding data coming to my phone, then after I restarted the phone. It still didn't work, then she asked me to try on wifi and then it worked perfectly. That seemed to be the tipping point, when she escalated it to engineering. Whatever that means. But I was told to give it 72 hours. Yeah, I think we need to make some noise to T Mobile."

So did you say when you re-enabled LTE the calls worked again? If so that would be a good temporary fix.

Thanks for pointing me to that thread, I'll read up shortly. This all started for me between Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Re-enabling LTE does not fix it. I actually thought that broke it at first, but since reverting to factory settings didn't fix it I figured I might as well continue to enjoy LTE even if VoIP is broken.

Yeah, unfortunately we have no solution yet. I'm in the same boat as you. I'm just glad it works over WiFi.

Tonight I'll test Spare Phone on my wife's (my old) Optimus on Sprint. I expect it will work normally and will report back to rule out the app itself since I will be using my same Google account.

Confirmed that VoIP on data works with Spare Phone and GrooveIP on other networks.
It appears that I am back in business with no change on my part...

Hotspot tethering broken on 8.1

Just curious if anyone else is having issues with getting hotspot to work after the May 8.1 update. It turns on and devices can connect to the hotspot but can't get any connection to the internet. FYI, I'm on Sprint if that makes a difference.
A quick google search shows that Pixel and Nexus users have similar problems, but some have reported that resetting the APN settings fixes the issue. But of course the APN settings are greyed out thanks to the latest Sprint update.
Are there any other work arounds? I was hoping I wouldn't have to root, but am willing if that's the only way.
Working fine on Verizon

I'm on Sprint too and I never had issues with hotspot tethering since every updated from N to O. Also, my APN's settings are editable.
My phone is on stock rom and never been rooted.
No issues on stock with tethering on T Mobile
No longer working for me with the may update on sprint. Hotspot isn't on my plan though
FYI, turns out the April 8.1 update still works, so don't update to the May one if you need hotspot.
Thanks for the replies everyone. Gotta love Sprint I guess...
It stopped working with the May update for me. I added net.tethering.noprovisioning=true to my build.prop and it's working again.
I'm running the Android P beta and wifi hotspot was broken te moment I installed the May update...
How would one edit the build.prop?
Looking for help to get working again. Anyone have any luck? I am not rooted. Hotspot worked great before 8.1 update.
Thanks,
MJC
Same thing happened to me, tethering stopped working after the May update on my essential phone using Sprint.
I reset to the April version from essential's current builds (Oreo 8.1 - OPM1.180104.141) and it started working again for me.
I had to edit the flashall script following the advice from reddit. Search reddit unable_to_flash_official_images_using_fastboot (I am a new user so cannot post links).
