[q] [tilapia] battery drain issue - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I am wondering is there any of you having same issue as me ?
I am using TILAPIA device and suffering from around 5% / H battery drain during idle (all off and in airplane mode)
strangely, BBS report is showing my device is in sleep mode for more than 90% of the time
as per now what I can think of is to set tasker profile to shut down the device when screen is off for 5 mins
but I am still curious why and what is the cause of battery drain while the device is actually in "sleep mode"
Thank you

Solution for Battery Drainage in ICS Stock ROM explained

My English might be poor, hopefully this thread help. I have flashed stock ICS in my tab baseband XXLQ8. After fully recharged my battery, I found that the performance was not tolerable since in HC 3.2, it only drains 2-3% battery life per 24 hrs in a sleep mode. Unlike HC 3.2, ICS 4.0.4 (baseband XXLQ8, some addressed as Italian stock ROM) drains 1-2% per hour in sleep mode. My battery life dropped 7% in 5 hours without any usage (off screen).
Later on I installed CPU SPY and BetterBatteryStats suggested by some of the posts here. Having the same problem, my tab could barely get into the Deep Sleep state when it was in sleep mode. Instead Deep Sleep, it still works under 216 MHz.
Somebody here suggested it was the Push Service in Samsung App, Google+ or something. Some even found that it was the GSM problem. With the sim card slotted in, the problem gone. However we are pretty sure the effect of the problem is battery drainage in sleep mode. We found that there is a kernel wakelock called l3_hsic all the while running in background that prevents the tab from going into Deep Sleep.
There are several possibilities causing this to happen. Apps creating wakelock maybe, some suggested Google+ with the sync or upload function enable; hey, wait! I don’t have a Google + account signed in, could that still be the problem? Some say Samsung App Push Service causes it to happen, so I just give it a try. Launch the Samsung App, go to the Settings and disable the Push Service. Put the tab to sleep for an hour and check back. Battery drainage still occurs since it dropped 2% for an hour. What a disappointment. But wait, this time I get into the tab Settings>Application>All and find the Samsung Push Service. Checked there were permissions such as creating wakelock and prevent tablet from sleeping. Tap on it and uninstall the app. Put my tablet into sleep again.
After 3 hours, turn on the tab and check back with the battery stats. CPU SPY shows that my tab could get into Deep Sleep state. My battery life did not even drop a single percent. Today is my third day from the last charge. Thanks god, problem solved.

Is that the "battery drains while on airplane mode" issue? I have it too :crying:
it doesn't work for me bro..
for me, i noticed that google maps (auto update on my place, that friends can see where i am) Since I enable auto location my place, i get no deel sleep, when i have disable it, i have 100% deepsleep
I disabled Maps to fix my battery drainage issue. If I need to use maps I just enable it.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
The solution to the l2_hsic is to insert a uSIM.
Nevertheless the deep sleep problem will remain. Sorry!
hello,
can we flash another kernel ?
I have the same issue with my galaxy tab 10.1 running Stock ICS 4.04. Something is interrupting deep sleep mode and the battery consuption is 2% per hour in standby mode.
After rebooting it seems to be OK but later and i dont know when/how/why... stops entering deep sleep. I think this problem needs a revision by Samsung but i am sure that they have forgotten us.
I've seen a firmware update on some other thread, for our tablets... but it seems we're not getting it OTA
Another Tips for slove it
I found another solution for this issue in this post:

[Q] Battery drain in deep sleep

Hello,
I am asking this question as to confirm if my tablet needs to be sent to warranty or this is a normal behavior to you other people reading this post.
I have stock 4.2.1 rooted on a nexus 7 16gb version
When I lock the screen the device enters deep sleep => I can verify this by using CPU Spy, it says that in 30min of screen off, 28 minutes were spent in deep sleep
Using Battery monitor widget with refresh rate at 1min I can look at the log and see that the tablet had a constant drain of 50 to 94 mah during those 30 minutes. Only after 2-3 hours the device starts to have a drain of 2-3 mah (if the screen is off)
Wireless, Bluetooth, Gps are turned off.
If you think I may have omitted some things in my test procedure please share some info, otherwise please tell me if you also encounter this problem
A good day !
background apps could cause drain, not even apps you opened. like the facebook app is notorious for it.

Hmm, normally when I had the HTC HD2 when it was in deep sleep it had a drain of 2-3mah - battery monitor widget was checking every 1min
Now with the Nexus 7 the drain is 50-94 in deep sleep, do you think this would be a normal behavior ?
I can relate
I get the same type of behavior on my Nexus 7 16GB wifi only model. Mine does not seem to be due to an app either, as the main battery use is Google related (Play store, or Google services, etc.). Take today for example. I charged my Nexus 7 overnight, verified that it was reporting fully charged when I got up, then I put it to sleep and set it aside to take to work and didn't use it again. When I got to work 2.5 hours later I turned it on and it was at about 83% battery. I lost almost 20% battery in 2.5 hours without even using the tablet. I attached a screenshot - today's culprit was Android OS (I took the screenshot a couple of hours later at work). This behavior started after upgrading to 4.2 - it never did this on 4.1.
Oddly enough, I don't get this type of drain if there's no wifi connection, even if wifi is left on and there's a wifi signal that it's just not connected to. When I get someplace with wifi, the battery drain starts again.

[Q] Nexus 4 battery drain while device is sleeping

Hi,
I have a new Nexus 4.
Sometimes when I check my device in the morning, I see that it lost ~40% at night.
This happens even if I turn off wifi and mobile data.
When I look at the battery settings I see that the device was sleeping the whole night.
So if the device is sleeping and there were no wake locks, what else can cause him to loose battery?
Thanks.

FB-Messenger, Skype, WhatsAPP to name a few candidates.
Try the cpuspy AP, this will tell you in which activity staus your phone is in and how long it is in deep sleep e.g.

Thanks, I installed CPU Spy.
Seems like 46% was in deep sleep and 44% in a low frequency (384 MHz).
So how can I tell what caused it to get out of deep sleep?
Only one example is the monitor included in Android Assistant (useful APP in general IMO)
"Report location from this device" was the culprit in my case. Caused massive battery drain even when everything else was turned off.

Thanks but it's already disabled on my phone.

msm_hsic_host wakelocks battery drain

My phone occasionally fails to go to deep sleep and battery drops 10% per hour ( screen off )
Installed wakelock detector and the top offender was msm_hsic_host kernel wakelock,
in extreme cases it was keeping the device busy at 50% of the time
tried google a lot, lots of people have this issue ( not just S4 ) but there doesn't seem to be a solution to the problem.
anyone else getting this treat ?
any fix?
update: attached screenshots
workaround found?
just following up ...
last night installed "Easy battery saver" and configured it to disconnect data/wifi when screen is off.
8 hours stand-by 4% battery is ( 0.5% per hour !!! ) -> before it was 10% per hour
phone awake 2% -> before it was 50 %
also msm_hsic_host wakelocks are gone.
anyone else getting these wakelocks?

I'm on stock 4.2.2 , I guess there is no point to flush a custom ROM
only workaround so far is to disable 3g/4g data ... when samsung is going to address this? last night got an OTA (1.2mb only) but this bug is not fixed there ...
u not going to believe this:
- I turned off (yes OFF) samsung power saving mode and no longer have the msm_hsic_host wakelocks ... must be a bug
looks like it has been fixed in new FW ( MH8 )
we'll see in long term

WiFi battery drainage

I've got a problem with WiFi consuming too much battery. I fully charged my phone and did not touch it while it was connected to WiFi. After 2.5 hours, it was at 88% saying most of it was consumed by WIFi and standby mode.
I have "WLAN optimization" turned on. I never had this kind of problem before with other phones - does anybody have an idea what I could do to reduce the battery usage?

maybe you have apps synchronizing and draining the battery, try greenify app to hibernate what you dont need when phone is on standby mode.
