When I first got the Evo, I was getting about 900kb/sec-1.1mb/sec in my house, and ever since I've flashed these custom ROM's and new radio... The best I can get is about 300-500kb/sec... I've also noticed that my signal seems to fluctuate every couple seconds, from no signal to a full signal, which never used to happen either. I know I'm not going crazy, I just wondered if anyone else has experienced this... It's really discouraging

I notice slower speeds as well from my first day or so 4th and 5th. I might feel the same way you do if I didnt have my girlfriend and best friend who both got evo around the same time and are being completely stock. They both have similar speeds to me. I actually went into a Sprint store to complain and sure snuff my speeds jumped up to 700kbps downstream for the first time in almost a week right before I went in.
I am NOT happy with my 3g speeds and am borderline on canceling my contract. If it wasn't for this awesome phone and this awesome dev community I would tell Sprint to kiss my whole @$$h0le. Premium data my ass.

I noticed better speeds after the ROM and Radio update. Speeds are highly variable and depend on a lot of factors. I doubt you damaged it by flashing, flash memory is designed to be flashed.

I have a feeling this has more to do with your local network congestion, but feel free to prove otherwise.
I've flashed the original RUU and it didn't fix it... why would my speed halve with no changed variables? It just doesn't make sense.
It's not possible that I damaged my radio by flashing the upgraded radio? And now that's why it's acting erratic and my speeds are so bad?

I just got 490 down 380 up, but my results vary wildly... again depending on network conditions and where you are connected and how many users are also connected, etc. Get a few people on the same tower that are into bittorrent and your results can be drastically different.

Even if it is possible, your new phone will come pre-broken most likely. That radio is the official Sprint radio and if the phone has the OTA update you will have it.

Just because you do not know what the variables are, does not mean there are no variables.
Possible variables you are not considering.
There are 20 other people around you with new EVOs testing their speeds, tethering, and downloading like its going out of style.
Time of the day. There are peak usage times. Maybe your first test was on a low usage time.
The site you use to test your speed has become more congested recently.
There is more CDMA users around you recently. With CDMA towers, the more users per tower, the lower its radius/signal will get.
Maybe you had WiFi on the first time?
I am sure I could make up 15 more variables if I wanted to.
To ease your concerns, think of ROMs as software, and your phone as the hardware. It is very unlikely that you did damage to the hardware. Especially considering most of these ROMs are exactly like Stock minus a few Sprint apps.

Sorry to break it to you but these are typical sprint speeds. Sprint is one of the slowest cell carriers I have ever used.
I'm not an idiot alright... I didn't have Wifi on... I know somethings screwed up with my phone, it's not in my head.
There are possibly some variables as to why my speed isn't the same as it was a week ago, but there really is no explanation that for my erratic signal.
Oh well, hopefully I can figure it out.
obviously this has nothing to do with wifi, but doesnt the EVO have 4G and cdma radio's????

I am close to returning my EVO. I thought that maybe one of my flashes has done something to my 3g speeds, but I ran that RUU and no luck . I am going to be going to Sprint store on Wednesday to compare.
I am in Aurora CO, I am coming from Nexus one on T-Mobile. I LOVE Evo, but hate the way sprint is. I use my phone at the gym to listen to Pandora/Slacker, can't even do it on Evo since I get such crappy 3g speeds.. Downtown Denver phone works fine, but not here... Anyways, on T-Mobile I got about 1.6mb down, and 300up most of the time.
Today, I went down to T-Mobile store and ran SpeedTest on MT3G and Evo. At the store, MT3G got 3mbps down!!!, Evo howered around 600kbps. Anyways, point is, I really am not too happy with Sprint in my area. I am sure that in other places it is fine, but it doesn't seem to be the case here. I have tried everything, even downgraded my radio, no change in results.

Once again, really depends on where you are. I have posted of my results here in Colorado, so yea...
have you tried changing the PRL's to use Verizons towers?
from my experience the only negative thing it does is break sprint TV
i felt the same way, just noticed tonight. but now that i've run a bunch more speed tests, it all averages out. no doubt all these evo's are taxing sprints network to the extreme. :/ hopefully that $10 surcharge will quickly pay for upgrades.
UPDATE - - see my post on page 3, the issue is confirmed as a Sprint network problem. I'm in KC, no problems. Denver 2 hours ago, couldn't load this page without timeout. Call Sprint and demand it be fixed!
Update 2 -- I just got off the phone with Sprint this morning (6/18) and they confirmed the issue. They have lots of reports of problems in Denver and Colorado in general. They say the issue started on 6/13 and affects 3G, 4G, third party messaging, and data roaming. They're not accepting any more trouble tickets, however, she did note my account that I reported the issue was occurring since that time for me, and she said once the issue is resolved, I should call back to ask for credits to my account for the loss of data use. I would urge ALL of you to call Sprint today and report the same so you can get your account noted and get some money back when they fix this crap.

I'm having a VERY flaky 3g connection after rooting and moving to flipz and damage roms. I don't think it's either rom, instead I think it has something to do with either the radio flash, or with Denver's 3g connection in general. Anyone else having similar issues? I've seen at least one person using each of flipz and damage seeing that.
Any ideas at what might cause the 3g connection to get hosed? It will cut out during file downloads, etc...it seems like it can't hold itself for more than 2 minutes. It will still say there is a connection, but you can go to google.com in the browser, and it will timeout.
I've updated PRL and Profile several times with no luck, I've tried the old radio and new, both affected. PRL 60665 is what I have now.

I have a stock EVO that is having the exact same problem. Seems to time itself out after a min or so. My wife has the same phone and no problem.

Can you check and see in the software information if you have the same baseband and prl version? You might be able to help us figure this out. Thanks!

Just checked them and they are exactly the same, although she is now having the same issue. To be more specific, the 3g icon shows upload and download for a length of time (20 sec to 2 min) and then sometimes shows only the upload arrow. The upload icon flashes a few times and then 3g drops completely. Usually upon returning to the home screen it seems to reset itself, only to repeat once internet is accessed or application is installing.

This is the exact same behavior I'm experiencing. I've tried both radios, multiple ROMs, etc. The only conclusion I can draw is that it must have something to do with the PRL version, or the infrastructure itself here in Denver.

I have tried everything I can think of (short of giving up and calling support) and still no dice. The thing I can't figure out is what could have changed in the last 3-4 days in my neck of the woods to suddenly have such intermittent coverage. I have had Sprint for 10 months with absolutely no issues, now I can't even check out full websites. Makes the Evo a lot less fun for sure.
I dont think its just Denver. Im thinking sprint is throttling perhaps. Its affecting 4 people in the DC Maryland VA area that i know that have EVOs

I had the same problem in Denver until I flashed the OMJ rom. now works. Try it. Also 4G working better. No idea if the issue is radio or PRL or something. I will post my info screen when I get a chance.

Umm 4G? I thought Denver wasn't supposed to get 4G until July. I heard that Coors Field has a low power 4G broadcast from it. If you are receiving 4G, what part of Denver do you live in?

I've seen 4g by I25 and I70, but haven't found it anywhere else yet. It's definitely not down by centennial or parker, where I work and live.
Awesome find on the OMJ Rom al! I'm going to try it, and then touch base with flipz and toast to see if they have any thoughts as to what it might be.

I work downtown. Definitely the best signal I get is near Coors Field, but I have seen 4G as far south as Broadway & I-25 and as far north as I-70 & I-25.
Speeds are variable. Looks like they are getting all the hardware in place and testing. Hope it means that full 4G will be online soon!
No dice for the OMJ rom for me. I flashed it, and had the issue reproduced within two minutes of the rom being up. Hung in the market, and then timed out in the browser on sprint's powerdeck website.
I noticed that the upload arrow was solid throughout the entire time of the behavior occurring.
Well, shoot.
Just a thought, I notice on my sprint home page that I've used 3.5GB of data this month.
Could this be throttling maybe? I know someone else mentioned it earlier, but just noticed this usage amount on my own page. can others experiencing it check their usage as well?

Something's screwed. I saw 3. 5 gb used earlier on Sprint. Com and on the way to the airport, checked again, saw 500 mb on my wifes hero, 780 on mine. Calling Sprint tomorrow.

I'm in the same part of town as kmartburrito and had this issue the other day with Flipz 0.2. I just restored my flash of Flipz' stock with the OTA update and new radio. I'm having no problems with that setup.
Haven't had time to flash anything else yet, but I'm planning to unlock NAND this weekend and check out Flipz and Damage's new stuff. After reading this thread, I think I might just leave well enough alone until things stabilize a bit.
I get strong 4G signal at home and use it for my primary internet so I get a pretty good idea when things change. The past three days i've noticed the speeds consistently went way down, from 5-8 mbit to 1. Speed test app and dslreports both confirm almost exactly 1.0 mbit down AND up, consistently.
This is on either full 4G signal or all but one bar, and it sucks. I get almost the same bandwidth on 3g, around 650 kb down, 800-900 up.
I'm getting a bit irritated, as I know the speeds were much better just a day before. Has anyone else noticed this going on?

How much bandwidth do you typically? ballpark?
might be tower issues/work network related, I yesterday had a 2.3mb 3g and 8.2mb 4g today
well dam just start a class action lawsuit
I tested again today, 1.01 megabits down and up, for the 4th day in a row. really starting to look like a pattern here. It's far too consistent to be network traffic/signal related, I get the same speed morning, day or night..
In the past i've always gotten between 4 megabits on a slow day and 8 megabits on a good day. I just hope this isn't the future of 4G coverage around here, I got on another 4G network 8 miles away with the same speed results, take from that what you will.
As for the class action lawsuit, the sarcasm really isn't necessary. You'd be annoyed too if you watched your speed drop 800% overnight and stay there.
Thats weak sauce and by no means 4G speeds. Have you contacted Sprint? Your area may either 1) not be live 4G yet so they are still doing tests or whatever the **** it is Sprint does or 2) the area is so saturated they are trying to get more fiber optics in there before uncapping it.
Do you have anyone else that has an Evo you can test to see if they get similar results? At least that way you can take yourself out of the equation.
This is common in a few markets. It is not based on throttling due to large data consumption as some rumors say. It is most likely clearwire having issues with towers, usage, etc. If you want to call and talk to someone about it I recommend calling clear and not sprint. What area are you in anyway?
I checked with Clear and they told me my 4G MAC address is operating on Sprints towers, not theirs, so they couldn't tell me any information about my connection or speed issues.
This does bring up an interesting point though, could I have been on the Clear network prior to this week, and thus the large speed difference is from changing networks?
This timeline coincides with a 4G network outage I had 4-5 days ago, and lasting around 24 hours. It's been slow ever since then. Could that have been the switch from Clear 4G to Sprint 4G?
Well I am not an expert on this at all... but I think the person at Clear may not have been correct. From my knowledge, Sprint has no 4G towers (unless you consider Sprint owning 54% Clear owning their towers as well). So if it were me, I would call back to Clearwire another day and talk to somebody else to see if they give you the same answer. I have spoken to various people, both at Sprint and Clear, and I get a variety of answers. The best consensus I have come to, however, is what I stated above - that Sprint does not own it's own towers. It is for this reason that Sprint has to keep pumping money into Clearwire even though they do not want to.
I have been having issues somewhat similar to yours here in the SLC area, but my speeds have been closer to 100 kb. As of yesterday, though, it seems to be doing better.
I spent 45 minutes on the phone with sprint "advanced technical support" where I was tossed around between various departments which all seemed confused by my use of the word "megabit".
One nice rep insisted on asking me "but is that peak bandwidth?" to which I honestly still have no idea how to answer that question, but they ultimately the speed is what it is. Go figure.
This kind of sucks, and makes me like my Evo considerably less. It feels like a cheap bait and switch tactic, except now its passed 30 days and I'm locked in. I'll be visiting the Sprint store (where I've had excellent customer service) and see what they can do for me.
I noticed something interesting the other day. I was holding my Evo on both sides of the bottom and I couldn't get more than 1-2 mbps then I held it on the top end of the sides and my bandwidth got way better almost up to 6 mbps. I tried this a few times each with the same result. Just earlier I reached over 8 mbps and it was still raising till the test ended which makes me think I may have reached up 10mpbs if it would've continued
That's because of the signal attenuation and where the 4G antenna is located in your phone.
Yes...all phones do it...just the iPhone's was a huge fail.

Two Questions:

1. There are some cities that are subject to some slow speeds. Where are you located?
2. As long as your radio is s-off you're good to go.

Haven't ever read any complaints from anyone in Pennsylvania.
Try updating your prl and data profile.
Maybe call Sprint as well.
You could also completely unroot back to 3.70 and then reroot and see if it might help.
Also, updating your radios to the latest.
There's a thread in the development section.

Oh, ya, been there and done all that. This is even my 3rd EVO and I've never been able to break the 250-300k/bs limit on any of them, but this 87 is just getting ridiculous.
So sprint is sending me an Airave, but the guy said it's most likely not going to fix my problem. My next solution is to argue my way out of the contract and go with a more reliable carrier... Sadly there are no other phones out I want right now.

"reliable carrier" changes per the area you live.
If you make a note of the issue and it isn't fixed within a reasonable amount of time they will waive your ETF as they are technically violating the contract.

Could just be a temporary area issue.
Personally, my data speeds absolutely SUCKED on the 05.02 radio. Ive since flashed back to 04.08 and all is well.
It's been a while, but one evening a 6 pack of beer and I sat down and flashed every single radio, and did 3 speed tests on each radio combo. Took about 2 hours all done and said, but there never was a huge difference.
The sprint rep said my location should have full coverage (I live in NJ, right outside of Philadelphia. Every carrier has full coverage here). I asked him what the average 3G speeds were, and he said I should be getting anywhere between 600kb/s and 1.2Mb/s.
I've never seen either of those numbers except when I use 4G. Keep in mind that I've used this phone everywhere from Utah, Colorado, NC, VA, DC, NYC, Philly, Trenton, etc and it's all the same. I, as the Spring rep, would like to blame the hardware, but this is the 3rd Evo I've had in a year.
My 4G speeds are usually about 2.5Mb/s. Friend of mine has the Atrix and he's getting 2.5Mb/s on 3G as AT&T hasn't rolled their 4G network out yet. I also have a friend with a Thunderbolt, and he's getting ~22Mb/s average. (Yes, that's Twenty Two)
So, again, as far as I'm concerned, the Evo is the best phone on the market still, however the service is a deal breaker for me.
I'm going to try this Airave thing out, but if it doesn't work I'm going to be shopping/waiting for the next LTE phone assuming Verizon gets a phone that's worth half a crap.

This won't help at all but I need to add that I've switched from T-mobile to Sprint, and the 3G speed of T-mobile was incredibly fast in NYC. Sprint was bareable, but since the update it's been speeds of 0.19Mbs d/l and around 0.15Mbs up. It sucks because at my job I'm indoors with no 4G around so I'm confined to 3G. But at school when I have 4G full blast it's almost close to fiber optic speed.

I got the phone a few days ago, from day one I noticed I've been having network issues. By that I mean every time I try to use any apps that require data such as facebook, youtube, instagram, chrome, google now, and especially speedtest, my network would die for about 10 seconds as it reconnects.
All bars drop, I get the message of "network unavailable", and slowly edge speeds come back, followed by hspa.
I have tested this throughout all parts of Los Angeles already.
I have also replaced the micro sim card twice.
I also hard reset the phone back to stock.
Also reset the APN settings.
Two other people I know of in the area, their Nexus 4's work perfectly fine.
I'm all out of options, the T-Mobile tech support team is also out of options, i was recommended to send it back to Google but I don't want to do that unless it's absolutely necessary as a last resort.
I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with this issue or any suggestions as to what to do?

Seems like a similar problem to what I'm having. I always just randomly lose reception. Reception is already really really bad for me, but it seems like it's whenever I pick up the phone the network goes out. It's really getting on my nerves. Most places in my house I get no reception. But it's the weirdest thing that happens. I can be sitting on the couch using my phone, and have no bars. But then I set the phone down on the couch to go grab something from the fridge and when I come back I'll have received a text message and I'll have like 2 bars! But then the second I pick the phone back up reception goes out again.
This has been going on for the last month for me, and it's especially bad at work but almost nowhere else.
I think (though I have no concrete evidence) that it's because of their ongoing 1900mhz refarm.
Someone should call tmo and find out.

yep..i'm starting to feel like it's 100% hardware related to the antenna. might have to contact google and see what's up. hopefully if i send it back they won't take a month to replace it haha

I've experienced these problems on AT&T (MEdia Net, not DataPro) as well. It happens regardless of how good my signal is. I haven't experienced the other problems you are a time else mentioned.
On the NPR app, it results in some sort of error such that I have to reboot to get the NPR app working again. The app doesn't say something has gone wrong, but it won't load any audio and will hang after waiting.
The signal drops, then picks up again and goes straight to HSPA+:15. This happens to me on the road quite often and I just switch to onboard music rather than fiddling with my phone while driving. The issue has occurred a few times while in Maps, but thankfully I knew how to get back from where I navigated to.
EDIT: Just want to clarify to the poster below me that this occurs REGARDLESS of how good my signal is. It happens when I have better than -50 dBm (I think -70 gets full bars, although I've even seen full bars at -90!) so it can't just be a low signal issue.
I'm pretty sure this happens to all nexus 4s unfortunately. Anyways that is in a poor connection area had this happen.
This happens to me at home. Bounces from 0 to 3 bars constantly. But if I'm outside in an area with strong signal I never go below 3 bars no matter how I hold it.

Ive been having the same problems with my n4 in tmob. I get a lot of 3g and sometimes i get no bars. I hope its not a hardware issue. Im in many miami and ive seen a couple of threads about this

I don't think it's an antenna issue. It was happening on my Galaxy Nexus for a few weeks up until I got the Nexus 4, and prior to that I *never* experienced total signal loss like this.

The first couple weeks I had the N4, I wasn't experiencing any connection issues, but for some weird reason they started last week. It wasn't even fresh after I flashed a new ROM. I think perhaps it's a network issue that is somehow specific to our unique phone and plan combinations and our areas. Anyone using AT&T's MEdia Net plan in Georgia?
I think you guys may have gotten my issue a bit confused, what I'm trying to say is my signal fluctuates depending on location like normal, however only when I use apps that are solely dependent on internet connection, my entire network goes down.

Yeah that's what I'm encountering as well. I wonder what these other guys are talking about?
My network goes down regardless of whether I'm doing anything with the phone or not. I could have just the screen on and it'll be lying on the table and I'll see it go from 2 bars to empty and eventually back.
It's especially bad at work where I have terrible signal to begin with.
Forgot to add.. my coworker with an HTC 8x and another with a Galaxy Nexus are getting the same issues.
So, it's a network problem for sure. I'll post this on the tmo forums tomorrow and see if I can get any official word on the matter.

This exact thing happens to me using straight talk att Sim.. Right now, full bars to zero, then back. Sometimes it jumps to roaming, and seems to get "stuck" and I need to turn airplane mode on/off to fix it

I experienced something similar on my N4 and called T-Mobile tech support. They had me power off my phone and they "reprovisioned" or "reprogrammed" my data connection or something like that. It's been better since then.

last night after midnight my phone suddenly couldn't get a signal from t-mobile. i thought i screwed it up, but then i took the sim and put it in my galaxy nexus and it had the same issue. so i went to bed and in the morning it was working fine. i suspect t-mobile was doing stuff to their network in my area
Having the exact same problem today in Manhattan near Bryant Park. Can't keep a stable signal at all and data is connecting only in bursts. Hopefully this will be fixed soon or I'll have to look for other options than Tmo and my N4
What's the E stand for? 3G?
