What SMS app do you use? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. With the new hangouts there are a lot of the features from previous SMS apps missing. Like the quick pop up reply from notification menu and multiple contacts.
I like hangouts and to be honest I'd like to use just one app only. Using Textra and it is awesome but can I uninstall hangouts and just use Textra on its own? What you guys use

I use google voice, barely any improvements, very buggy. But I haven't found anything better for texting thru voice. Also kakaotalk which is very bloated. I want a clean app that has option to send/not send push notifications. Know any?
I'm glad u said Hangouts is mandatory, I hate that. Can't we revert back to an older version and not be forced to use proprietary crap.

Hangouts is NOT mandatory, you can use any texting app you want.

Yea totally not Mandatory I used it for a week or so as my default sms application but then i switched back to the regular that came with the phone.

I use Hangouts. Its functional and full featured. The only annoying thing is that convos with the same person are separated by SMS and IM hangouts.

Unless something has changed I will stay with handcent, I never liked Go SMS Pro, or any Go product... But you never know, if its better for some reason I would try it.

Good Handcent alternative?

Well kids, i've been running Handcent since day 1. Up until recently it's been great. Exactly what i wanted. But the past few updates have ruined it. It's slower then ever. To the point of being unusable and i've had enough.
What are some alternatives to Handcent? The real reason i got it was because i liked the layout it offered. I never really played with the other features. Any suggestions welcome.
I tried the new Stock and its ok.
Going to try Go SMS.
I've been using GoSMS

agreed, handcent has become crapware, bloated, packed with "online services".
I used to love it, for it's customizability. (hard to believe thats a real word...)
but with the new Messaging 3.0 in the Sense2.1/3 ROMs... its good enough.
I've heard bad things about GoSMS losing msgs. suddenly deleting All msgs...

I have yet to hear anyone say that go SMS has done so. But it seems to be an android problem. I've heard both handcent and chomp SMS delete all messages. Also, if you do a Google search, various android devices have been plagues with deleted messages (the original Droid comes to mind) ,even when using the stock messaging app.
It seems to have been a problem in the messaging framework in earlier android versions. I'd be interested if you could find these reports of deleted messages on phones running Gingerbread.

+1 on Go Sms. Handcent has become bloated with a bunch of unnecessary junk....

I think I am going to give Go SMS a try
GoSMSPro FTW
Just did a search to see if anyone else was noticing how slow it was. Guess I'm not the only one. Gonna try GO as well.

New Notification

I've been running CM7 since the last "Alpha" release and have it updated with the Oct 22 update. I don't recall exactly when, but I started recieving these "optout" notifications. I don't know if it's related to CM7 or something else, but they're not cool at all . Does anyone know where they're coming from or how to stop them?

The only app I have installed now that was not before I switched to CM7 is Go SMS Pro. Has anyone had any experience with it?
Go sms pro doesn't do that, but i don't use go fb chat. What opens when you click it?

Found this after a bit of research. Looks like an adbased app on your phone is using their apk. Seems they do support opt out, but aren't doing a good job a securing your identity period.

I'm not going to click those %^#$%#$%#$ Spam messages... I clear all the notifications. The only features of Go SMS Pro I use are SMS & MMS. I don't have Facebook, Myspace, Google+ or any other "Social networking" (Read: Stalking) crap. Want nothing to do with any of them. Any ideas how I can track down where it came from? I've looked at the installed apps and services with Titanium Backup and nothing stands out. Unless One of the other apps got 'updated' to include this new 'feature', Go SMS seems the most likely suspect at the moment.

wats a myspace?
Although I usually have 150-200+ apps installed at any one time, I started getting those annoying little "notifications" almost as soon as I installed the free version of the IPhone keyboard. Not cool at all...
How often do they come up? Is it at a predetermined time or is it random? A relatively easy way to narrow it down may be to look at market reviews of suspected apps.
Girlfriend had this problem. There's an app called airpush detector on the market. Download it to see what's causing the ads

Google voice is so slow

Ok, I'm finally making a thread about something that has been irritating the hell out of me. Every time I receive a text from google voice my tablet just freezes. Especially when I have google voice open or the keyboard up and I'm typing something. The keyboard becomes completely unresponsive for about 10 secs. This is extremely annoying because I have to use this damn app to receive texts from my Google number.
I'm just wondering if anybody has the same issue or a slight idea into making the lag better?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I haven't noticed any lag while using Google voice.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
GV works fine for me.
However, the one thing about GV that bothers me is that the text messages don't get threaded like the native messaging app. Its more like how blackberry would thread incoming texts back in the day.

Problem must be situational. I use GV daily, and have not noticed lags.
Just fired it up and sent a test message. Definitely no lag on that one.

How about if you have Google voice open and as you're typing you receive a message right at that moment? It's when I receive messages that it lags bad.

The issue mentioned occurs when there are too many threads in the inbox. I had this issue as well. I could not send texts consistently as they would just queue forever, and sometimes freeze up my phone. After deleting the threads down to like 150 in Google voice, the issue was resolved. Do this on a computer, as it takes a long time.
it could be your internet connection, for me it works well!

Anything new?

Hey guys, just thought I should check in. Seems like this forum is beginning to die. Has anyone got any new things that they would like me to test on my continuum?

Groove ip works but not with the default dialer, was simply trying to streamline the look. It actually works really well, so right now I'm just asking more for improving aesthetics.

Well I don't think it does use stock dialer at all. Stock dialer uses verizons ish. Groove has its own operations and google voice to call and text just uses voice. I'm pretty sure u can take out the dialer and just use groove and voice

Also thought I should share my nifty sms app I have been using.
It's called ninja sms and I got it for 1$ at the play store and I love it. Should check it out of you text quite a bit and don't want to continuously change between apps. It allows the sms to come up on the screen. Kind of like multi boxing on the s3
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
My lcuid 2 has that ability where the text will pop up and allow me to respond, delete or view without leaving the app. It is a super awesome feature.
Yeah I wish my dna had it stock but ninja sms is good for me.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
Does ninja have a character count? My pop-up has a character limit, if I go into the native messaging app I can type as much as I want and it will break it into multiple messages, the pop up only allows for a single message response. I haven't decided if I like that or not. I guess it really depends on I can use that to tweet.
When I text I can send more than 120 characters and on my screen it only sends as one message. You could try it out and always refund if you don't like it.

Yeah just took a look at it and sent a large message and it sent as one huge message and didn't split into different messages. You can view a text that is more than 160 characters as long as it was sent as one big message. I don't believe it has a limit. As far as I can tell it doesn't split it up.

So I really like the way ubuntu looks. Since my dna is locked and I have no access to unlock or root the phone via software method all I can do is jtag, however I'm not going to do that so I can't flash anything. Since I love the way ubuntu looks I decided to theme my phone after it using a launcher and a ton of custom widgets. Here is what I came up with.

It's available on the backend, but you've got to actually run apps that support the new features (it's all part of GCM if you want to look it up, replacing C2DM). Even Google's offerings using GCM though (Hangouts, looking at you!) are really...weird about it.
For text messages try Mighty Text. Just install it on both your android phone and the nexus 7

Agree, Mightytext developer's really made my day a lot easier! Getting notified of SMS, MMS & calls that's incoming. Sure lot's of Apps gives the simular functions, but the great thing about MT is that you could have a tab running in your browser and get notified on the computer also, and that you can answer/create msg directly from N7 or webbrowser. Smooth is that it runs on your 3G/4G, so you'll not have to use bluetooth or wifi and flipping it on and off etc. Sure if you wanna use the wifi @ home on your phone, MT will of course use that route. Probably the most beloved product for me, because having long conversation over SMS is just dumb. When you have a keyboard that makes me input data that much faster, but not everyone is thinking like me Glad that's not the case though! hehe..
Best regards,
H.
