nexus 8 - Nexus 7 (2013) General

I saw some crazy article about the nexus 8, yes 8, and 10 being released on black Friday. Thoughts?

Nexus 8? Pshaw. I'm waiting for the Nexus-6. I hear Tyrell is supporting them for four years instead of just 18 months.

Doesn't make sense, the aforementioned article mentions the Nexus 8 to have an 8" display running 1920x1200 with 8GB memory, those specs just seem like scattered rumors pieced together.
Oh well, we shall see.

There will be no more NEXUS devices released this year. There is NO new Nexus 10 & the Nexus 8 is only a conceptual device that has been submitted to Google by two manufacturers, with a third supposedly also working on a conceptual device.
When any of those devices are anywhere near a release, you will see VERIFIABLE evidence. Like FCC filings that actually make sense, not just someone blankly stating their is some mystery FCC filing without giving any evidence. You will also see things like service manuals & warranty documentation leak out. This happens with every device Google, or any Android partner, has ever made. There is actual supporting evidence, just like the Nexus 4 & 5 & the 7 & the 7 2013. So far there has been nothing even close to legitimate pointing to any of these devices being anywhere near a release. Just rumor, speculation & a few FAKED screen grabs.

I would love to see a Nexus 8 device released, but I'm afraid you're right. If Google was going to release one, they would have to do it now in order to take advantage of holiday sales. There is no good evidence for one, at this point, and the door is pretty much closed for this season.

I went from an iPad Mini to a Nexus 7. I think 7" is a better size than 8".

Unless the phone size increases a whole bunch, next year's phone will be Nexus 5 (2014). Just like this year's Nexus 7.

What do you think of the LG - v510 then? It isn't g pad lte since that exists already: v507L.

Could just as easily be an LTE version for a different region, or even a carrier specific version. Again, no proof, just speculation & I seriously doubt even if it were a Nexus device that we'd see as thing this year.

Yeah, I also think Google will lauch the N10 somtime later this month
For Christmas Holiday, you know.
But I also believe "7" is better than "8". While if you go for 10 or above, then iPad is a better choice.

For the cost I would not say the iPad is better then the nex 10.

Dude, I HATE apple, but I will tell you flat out, hands down, the iPad & even the new KF HDX, both blow the Nexus 10 away handily. I use the N7 2013 as my primary, but have sold the N10 for an HDX 8.9 just as a media consumption device.
Samsung's processor & GPU is just inferior to the SD800 & adreno 330 & struggles with many events on the N10.

I said "for the cost". The Ipad has drawbacks as well considering it does not use Android. I guess it just depends on the user as well. I know many people that have the Nex 10 and have never mentioned any "struggling" issues but again it depends on the user and the cost. While the Ipad may perform better and have a better display you will pay steeply for it. For me the extra cost just is not worth it plus I really can never go back to a system like that. I would honestly rather have a customizable system like Android with a little bit lesser performance, lower cost than have an expensive, fast device that I cannot really customize.
Just my opinion though bro.

For the cost, yep. The KF HDX is cheaper than the N10 was when I looked at the Play Store last week. As for performance issues, just check out Google's product & bug forum, or even the threads here. Horrible touch screen issues for many.
I use a N7 for most things & found myself using the 10" tabs for media consumption. I've had or have nearly every decent 8" to 10.1" tablet made in the last few years & the HDX is by far the best performing tablet I've used. Once gapps are possible, well my large tab search for near perfection is over for a while. Telling you, the SD 800 & Adreno 330 combo is amazing.

I really doubt it.
Nexus phones are usually 2 years apart. Maybe the nexus 5 got released a bit before the 2 year mark.
Tablets are usually staggered 1 year apart. Nexus 7 - Nexus 10 - Nexus 7 2013 and next is the Nexus 10 2014 edition.
I just wish there would be more apps that would more geared toward tablets and there would be more productivity involved. For example the stock calendar is absolutely horrible and there is nothing that really fits tablet and my fancy on google play.

Let's ignore whether it will have 4.1 on it or not.
Nope
None with the same form factor. But if we consider Android tablets as a whole, there's the Asus Transformer series. Considering that the Transformer Pad 300 just got Jelly Bean recently, it is a noteworthy tablet if you want something that is more productive.
samsung galaxy tab 2 7.0
its a 7inch screen same price
idk how good it is tho
No and that's the reason why when I finally bought a tablet it was a Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 finally filled that niche of power, price and portability. If you add on the fact that millions will be sold and it will be getting community support for years you can guarantee it will be a sensible purchase.
The only fly in the ointment is the spotty customer service from Google. However I think it's worth the risk.

Its not horrible ...dual core vs quad core. I think a slightly lower resolution, but it has a microSD slot. I would get the tab 2 7.0 if I were a media junkie. You know, having to have tons and tons of music, movies, and other media like that.

From various reports I've read from people who actually used both the Tab 2 and the Nexus 7, they always say that the Tab 2 is much less responsive as far as the UI goes. It seems like it's probably a software/ROM issue since the CPU is powerful despite being "only" a dual core.

My dillema... Sell Xoom for Nexus 7?

I got me a Xoom with all the bells and whistles on release day. Paid a bit over $800 for the 3G Xoom from Verizon (no contract BS), Keyboard, the case, etc.
That was about a year and a half ago. I had it on 3G, then 4G for a while.. but then I just hardly used it anymore. With my Galaxy Nexus phone, I hardly looked back at the Xoom for a really long time. I ended up cancelling my data service through Verizon.
Now after using it for a bit again, I'm loving the tablet experience once more... but unsure about what I should do. I'm tempted to sell the Xoom and pick up the just-announced Nexus 7.
What kinda hurts me is that all the Xoom accessories are now going for a bit $300-350ish give-or-take. A nice chunk off of the $800+ I initially paid.
I know Jelly Bean is coming around for the Xoom in a few months (even longer for the 3/4G version..).
.. or I can just hop on the newly-released Nexus 7. From my perspective.. The Nexus7 has the same resolution 1280x800 res screen as the Xoom, while being smaller. This alone will result in a sharper and crisper display. Which right now.. after using the Xoom again, would be very much welcomed. I've been spoiled by high-DPI screens.
What do you guys think? Sell the Xoom, order the Nexus 7? Or stick around with the Xoom?
The end difference will pretty much be 7 inch vs 10 inch.
Other factors are negligible.

I will be out much earlier. On Google I/O (I watched it live on YouTube) it was said that JB would roll out to the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S and Xoom in mid july! Of course this only concerns the Google Experience-devices, not the Verizon-version. But as you said you have canceled your contract, so you could just unlock your Xoom and flash the Xoom-Wifi-firmware to get JB in mid july.
Then, like TheStickMan already said, it will mainly end up in the different screen-sizes.
Right now I still think the Xoom is a better device. It does come down to personal preference 10" or 7". We will have to wait and see this device with Jellybean . But you will lose things like HDMI mirror and USB OTG with Nexus 7.
Nexus 7 has no HDMI-Mirroring? Really? That's bad... Also the GNex has it...
Personally I got a Xoom (running CM9) and a Galaxy Nexus (actually running the leaked JB-release). And I thought about selling my Xoom and buying a Nexus 7.
Disregarding the point that I can't even order it in Germany yet, I think that, already having a nearly 5-inch smartphone I always carry with me, I don't really need a 7-inch tablet. A 10-inch tablet is better this way, even though I only take it with me, when I need it.
I don't think in Google's eyes the Nexus 7 is the successor of the Xoom. It an addition. And if you listen to the rumors it will get a successor by the end of the year, when the Nexus 10 may be released. Then, I think, I will replace my Xoom with a Nexus 10.
are u freaking nuts xoom rocks man :silly:
Makes no sense

Also no micro-sd slot for nexus 7 :silly:
Don't do it, xoom is better at all, yes, the nexus 7 is quad core and pure google but tegra 2 is a really good cpu and with xoom you have a great support in xda
I have a similar choice, although I only got my xoom last week so I can still return to the manufacturer this week.
I prefer the 10" form factor for tablets and the lack of hdmi out on the nexus7 is a bit of an oversight imo, although I can understand they wanted to keep costs to a minimum. Amazon are supposedly to release a 10" kindle fire tablet but without knowing the price/specs it is hard to decide.
This decision would be much easier for me if my uk model xoom was a proper GED like the US versions. I am reluctant to void warranty until at least six months has passed on any device before messing with flashing custom/other region's ROMS. Knowing the Xoom would defiantly get 4.1 in the next month or so would be a big factor!
Support for the Xoom is priceless!

Keep the Xoom
Like others have said, moving to the Nexus 7 you lose the SD card slot and hdmi port. I have also heard rumors about a 10 inch Nexus, so if you like the screen size of the Xoom maybe just wait.
I'm keeping the Xoom and getting the N7. Win Win....two 4.1 supported devices, 10" and 7" for separate purposes.
Def keep the Xoom. I actually like the fact that the Xoom has a rear facing camera as well. And a pretty good one at that.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
I was also considering this. I want to upgrade the Xoom but i'm not sure whether to go with the Nexus 7 or the Transformer Pad Infinity.
I have a GNex, Xoom 4G and an Evo View [HTC Flyer]. All three sizes and I am VERY happy with all three. I would replace the Evo View but the stylus is too hard to give up.
Keep the Xoom. Just add the Nexus 7 to your tech harem. Then again, I don't have a lap or desktop, so I need the Xoom for productivity. You may not have that limitation.

Oh.. by the way the Nexus7 runs phone-mode. Xoom runs tablet-mode.
I'm sure this can be tweaked with custom ROMS etc, but something to keep in mind.

Don't take the Transformer Pad if you like updates. Only Nexus-devices are updated like Nexus-devices. Of course the community normally manages to build custom ROMs after some time, but those are better with the proper proprietary files. And, of course, most of the devs prefer Nexus-devices, so there is a wide range of ROMs and MODs available.
I wouldn't like to wait for month, so I only buy Nexus-devices or at least Google Experience-devices like the Xoom.
I had initially created this thread a few minutes after listing the Xoom on eBay.
I took the auction down late last night.
I saw the suggestion about just flashing the ROM from the Wifi-only one, and that's most likely what I'll be doing. It should have - but never really crossed my mind that I could just flash that ROM and ignore the 4G card's support that I wasn't using anyway.
Part of me really still wants the Nexus7 though
Though the part about it running in Phone-mode rather than Tablet-mode does bug me. I'll see how that goes after some devs get a hold of it though.
The screen DPI of the Xoom does still bug me though
I've bee spoiled by the likes of the Galaxy Nexus, iPad 3, and other beautifully-high DPI screens.

Although a friend of mine warned me about LG quality and defects, I'm trusting Google.

Also if someone have time and basic knowledge of excel and google docs it would be nice to see all problems in one document, shared so other users can contribute.

I did like the "feel" of the Nexus One better then the Galaxy Nexus, but I also like the feel of my Nexus 4.
I may be in the majority, but I actually with I could get a 4" high-ppi nexus phone...these are getting to big to use in one hand comfortably.
How easy it is to use a larger screen device can also be attributed to the user interface design. If all/some control are placed within easy reach when holding with one hand then I don't see the problem with single handed use of a large device.
Now if only they did that with the UI design. I've got big hands and it's a stretch for me to thumb the top left of the screen with one hand...can't imagine folks with smaller hands.

Hey, don't be that fast to assume. I own a lot of tablets and my iPad is almost always my go-to device, mainly because I personally have no use for widgets so most Android tablet launchers are wasted on me.
for sure
You never know. All Nexus devices are sold at cost.
One of the big downfalls of the N7 was the lack of Video Out. Although, now with Android Sticks and the Ouyas, I'm not sure if it is really needed anymore. My N7 works so well that it would be hard to give it up, but they are still super nice and possibly able to sell for $100+. Right now, I'd say no... but once it is released, I'm sure I'll pick it up. Something typically always surprises me and makes it a no brainer.
The price is low enough that selling your old device > new device makes it a great buy.
The sad thing is that I need to sell my existing devices. I have a brand new, in the box, Nexus 7 32gb and my current N7 32gb. If I pick up a new one, my old lady will flip her lid.
So I am in no rush to grab one and I will probably wait it out to see if it is really worth the upgrade.

The reason I'm considering getting an iPad (it would be a Mini, by the way) is because iOS 7 has actually impressed me quite a bit in day-to-day use. I've also fallen in love with Jelly Bean over the last 5 months or so of using my Nexus 7. That leaves me in a quandary where I'm not partial to either and there are some compelling reasons to have one of each, especially the combo I'm considering.
I was going to, but not anymore. I broke my 8gb n7 about two weeks ago and have a nice payout from square trade, but the issue is that now I need my tablet. I have grown impatient with Google's lack of released info this year on dates and prices, however its safe to assume its going to be more expensive. I decided to grab a 32gb n7 that's presently $199 instead. Its still a healthy upgrade for me and I can use my old cases and accessories. I also like to play with ROMs so the older device will of course have better support for awhile.
Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk 2
The lack of tablet apps kind of discourage me to get the next n7...
I've had a 16GB N7 for almost a year and it's been a great tablet. Besides one issue I had with it not charging it has worked VERY well. I've never had any of the (somewhat) common issues like screen separation and it's still plenty fast. With that said I recently returned a new 32GB N7 that I purchased for $199 at Microcenter. I'm glad I did because the 32GB model is now $30 less at Staples. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it - zero build quality issues and it seemed noticeably faster than my 16GB model. I just don't want to get stuck with last years hardware if the new N7 is a big upgrade at a similar price.
In my opinion, it's unfair to compare an actual, available device to rumors, so I'm going to wait for official specs & price for the new N7 before making up my mind which one to buy.
I totally agree with you that the 32gb model is faster, esp loaded with cm10.1 and lean kernel. I also had an issue with one if the 32gb units, the staples mgr and I figured out they had a batch of units from batch D20 that were all defective with various issues. He broke out a D10 and its flawless. FYI if anyone sees any issues with theirs and what batches to look out for.

IMO these company's need to learn to give us what we want. I want a HDMI out, SD card. If the new Nexus does not have it, I'm not buying it.
There are to many other company's willing to put out a device that has what I want/need, so they will get my business.
Besides, even the new Sero 7 pro does everything I need it do to. Why would I need to buy a new Nexus with a faster processor and better resolution when after all, it's just a 7 inch tablet, not a PC. Once it got to the point where HD movies and games played without pausing or stuttering, what's the point of a faster processor?
I'll get the next on when/if my 32g dies! Not before.

No. I don't really even want a tablet anymore after my bittersweet relationship with the n7.

Probably SlimPort, or at least I hope it is since I already have one for me N4.

I will be. I held off on getting the first gen for too long since my xoom has been more than adequate. I am getting antsy though and would like the smaller format for outside the house.
Probably not, my nexus 7 is fine for now, and when I get a new tablet is probably going to be a Galaxy note.
Touchwiz is meh, but that spen on my phone has sold me, i love to do art work with it.

I was thinking about getting one. But after Staples lowered the price of the 16GB to $149 out the door I just had to get it. I could careless about a camera and SD slot so the original nexus is perfect for me...

Am I the only one that thinks tablet apps look like crap on 7" tablets in portrait mode? On a 10" tablet, sure they are great...but that is because you use them in landscape. 7" portrait is just too cramped IMO. I am OK with the lack of true tablet apps on the play store.....once I get a nexis 10 my view WILL change though.
Also, depending on what the current nexus 7 is going for around here I might pick it up. Extra power, double ram, and higher re screen would be awesome.

I for sure will get the next nexus 7, either that or the next nexus 10, not sure there, but I love the size of the 7 , but mine has screenlift real bad and is laggy and slow (original 16gb) so it sits around collecting dust

Note 8 (2014 Edition) Rumor Thread

I thought it would be a good idea to have a place for all the Note 8 (2014 Edition) frustration and rumors. I am currently holding off on upgrading to the Note 8 because (1) the 10-inch is just too big and (2) the small note requires a carrier contract. So, anyone have a good rumor?

...Wait, what?
The Note 8 is 8". There is also a WiFi only model.
There's info about an 2014 edition of the GNote 10.1 but I have not seen anything myself on the possibility of a "2014 Edition GNote 8.0".
Even if there is going to be one,it will come in around October 2014...and there will be something always around the corner...You wait till then, you will then think how version 2015 is going to be...Want to wait..?

But it would make quite a good rumor, for next Note 8 to have 10" screen. Foldable perhaps? I'd go for one myself, provided it'd have inbuilt espresso machine.

Waiting for the 8 as well. Hoping specs like the 10.1 so I can turn that into my next phone. Can't find **** about it though.
There didn't seem to be a lot of rumours before the Note 8 came out; just the announcement. I expect it will have the same specs as the new Note 10 and a wifi edition will be out in Canada next April. I will immediately run to the store to buy one.

According to this article ,The 8.0 did not sell as well as Samsung expected.
http://bgr.com/2013/09/27/8-inch-tablet-sales-ipad-mini/
I think they may end up focusing on the 7 inch model in the future unless they can bring the price of the 8" down below $250.00 retail.
Samsung has too many tablets in too many sizes and its confusing consumers. And the Note 8 is too expensive. As Apple had proven time and again, one size fits many.
Samsung should make two tablets: one big (~10"), one small (~7 or 8") with a starting price < $250. Other variants with more memory or 4G can be extra.
I really like my N5100, I wouldn't trade it for any other device on the market, but I couldn't recommend it (over competitors like the Nexus 7 or iPad) to anyone who didn't have very unusual needs.
7", 8" I'll take either as long as I don't have to wait till April to get it.

That article let tries to claim 8 inch tablets are not popular, which is bs. The Acer tablet mentioned was not selling well due to a crappy screen. The Note 8 may not have sold as many just due to its higher price. I MUCH prefer the 8 inch size, over 7. Plus Android tablets have a lot of competition between themselves.
Apple hasn't sold as many as they expected either. The Note 8 is far better than the ipad mini. It has far more features and a better screen.
What they stated may not even be true.
After owning the note 8 l don't want a 7 inch tablet. The 8 is a perfect size. Just want a a nicer one

I agree with both those statements, I bought the 3G 8.0 because it was at a price to good to miss, £300 brand new. Even though I had the 10.1 3G, inn a gadget whore... sue me haha.
But found very quickly the 10.1 was being left on the shelf more and more, 7" would be too small, the 8.0 ideal, it's not too heavy and is a lot more "mobile" in my opinion, I would just like to have it with a higher resolution screen.

I have a 10inch Asus transformer pad... note8 and nexus 7-2013...and trust me note 8 is the best... I hope the note8 with the features of note10, 2014 edition is going to be the ultimate device

So what are you all hoping for in an updated note 8?
Maybe:
Usb 3,
Higher res screen,
Faster processor,
3gigs of ram,
At least 32gig internal storage,
Better camera with led,
So what do you all want?

This is what kills it for me, kind of. :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2449717
Things being pushed down your throat, eFuse / warranty and the knox BYOD when eFuse just blows the OD in BYOD (Own Device) itself.
How is it an "Own Device" when Samsung and Corporate IT Get to decide that you can no longer use the device,in the BYOD env because you decided to do your Own thing with the device you Own.
Basically which, blows the eFuse, so first your hardware warranty is gone,do note that it's manufacturer who is deliberately damaging the hardware you own by knowingly doing an irreversible damage to the device (a condition it was not in when you bought it, and any software you installed did not do that). Though they have full right to deny the warranty, they cannot alter the state of a device with your ownership to an irreversible state (blowing a register in the chip) and declining warranty based on that.
Does it smell fishy?? Just putting in a point here, I know there could be a million examples otherwise).
and secondly you are not able to use in the BYOD environment because by the very definition that the device is compromised.)
I do thoroughly understand security concerns , however when the solution's implementation invalidates the very concept then something is very wrong in the thinking.
so I want them to think a bit more, on who owns what, if they don't want people to root, then make them devices un-rootable and let people decide what they want to own.
If they really want to emphasize security, should make it better & guaranteed secure irrespective of device state. That is something i'll look forward to.
sorry for the not so on the topic rant, but I feel it's a place for healthy discussion , on something related that might matter to lot of users.
Note: Some workarounds seem to be already in progress to avoid the eFuse triggering on some devices.however, that is not the point of my post.
Personally, I'm only interested in a possible Note 8.0 2015/2016 edition.
Better camera
Led flash
4gb ram
2.4ghz big .little soc
Much better gpu
HD screen
Better battery life (removable battery?)
Spen with 2 side buttons, eraser, tilt and rotation tech.
64gb internal storage
