[MOD][GUIDE][4.4.4] Headphone and speaker volume boost for the Nexus 5 - Nexus 5 Themes and Apps

Headphone and speaker volume boost for the Nexus 5
Hi Guys, with the help of audio god @ZeroInfinity I have created a mod that boosts the headphone and speaker volume on the Nexus 5.
This mod works with all Nexus 5 ROMs (Stock, PA, CM11, Omni etc.).
Enjoy
Benefits:
- Moves volume sweet spot to 50% vs. stock 80-90%
- Removes need for volume boosting apps that usually distort the audio
- Improved low end at optimal listening levels
Installation:
Simply download the desired file below and flash it in recovery.
4.4.4 Downloads:
Headphone and Speaker Volume Boost - Download
Headphone only Volume Boost - Download
Speaker only Volume Boost - Download
Reset to stock volumes - Download
Credits:
Many thanks to @ZeroInfinity
Disclaimer:
DO NOT USE additional volume boosting tweaks/applications with this mod.
Always check the volume level before playing music, I will not be held responsible for damaged speakers or hearing impairment!

How to tweak the volume manually
Video tutorial: Thanks to @jenenser83 for providing the video.
This guide explains how to fine tune the speaker and headphone volume. The file that contains these values is "mixer_paths.xml" which is found in /system/etc/mixer_paths.xml. Note: You will need root in order to edit this file.
I recommend using ES File Explorer as it allows you to edit the file directly on your phone. Before you start modifying you need grant ES File Explorer root access. To do this press the icon in the top left corner then scroll down and select Root Explorer, then select Mount R/W, then select RW for both / and /system.
To change the Speaker volume:
Open ES File Explorer and navigate to /system/etc and find the file "mixer_paths.xml"

}
Tap on the file and select ES Note Editor
Press the menu button in the top right corner and select Edit
Find: <path name="speaker"> You will see this string just below it: "RX7 Digital Volume" value="88"
The value is the only part we are going to adjust.
For the mod above, I changed the value to "93". The default value is "88" and I would suggest not to go over "95".
To change the Headphone volume:
Find: <path name="headphones"> Look for these strings below it:
"HPHL Volume" value="15"
"HPHR Volume" value="15"
Again all we are changing is the values (ensure both are set at the same number).
For the mod above, I changed the values to "20". The default values are "15" and I would suggest not to go over "20".
When finished, press the arrow in the top left corner and save.
Lastly Reboot your phone.
More to follow....

Hahaha, looks like I taught you well
Also... GET BACK ON HANGOUTS

will try it out!
thanks!

The way you do it maybe. Hence why I'd like to DL it and take a look at what's in that zip. Looking forward to it for sure. The audio clarity on the N5 is great but the volume on headphones is pretty low.

Since OP is doing the same thing I taught him, he has only modded a snd_soc_msm file in system/etc/snd_soc_msm it's just a really simple yet effective modification

What's the difference between this and faux sound?

Works great, thank you!

LOL. Thanks for this guys. Looks like you learned well. I just looked at the zip and I'm impressed by the simplicity of the mod. I can confirm that it works. I had to freeze faux sound to get the full effect but you noted that in the OP. Using Rocket Player with EQ and preamp turned off for the first time since I had this phone. Headphones are crystal clear and the volume is deafening at full blast. Big thumbs up.
Do you think there would be a way to also include more volume level controls in this? Like the way Voodoo worked? Instead of having ten increments having twenty? It makes it nicer to adjust the volume to the truly perfect level.

volume boost work on ringtones?

The mod speaker + headphone works well with Kingkat ROM 1.4 and Franco kernel 12.
Well done.

Thanks!

Volume warning and reset every day in Android 4.2

Is there any way to prevent this from happening with a google code to flash?
Or any other way :\ It is just very annoying :\

I am unsure of what is the problem? If there is a volume warning as in the highest level has been reached well then it won't go away and you should try flashing a different ROM (ie don't be on stock).
i think he means the pop-up that appears when you try increase headphone volume above ~30%. It warns you about possible ear damage and you have to "OK" it to increase the volume. I am also interested in possible workaround?

Uhhh yeah, it's present in the stock rom and in Paranoid Android. It's a common complaint about the N4. I haven't found a solution either...

There is a ROM with rootbox that can disable that thingy.
How do you even get that warning?? I can't get that no matter how much I raise the volume . I heard it was a country specific thing
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
It is a country specific setting yes.
I got my Nexus 4 set to the Dutch language, and thus setting my region to The Netherlands.
This makes the warning appear, since Android has to show that warning in my region.
Dont ask me why, it just has to.
I'm running Rasbeanjelly atm and there is an option to turn this warning on/off.
Cyanogenmod had the option to disable the headset warning as well. The devs of PA straight out refused the requests to have the option to disable it. They claimed its the law and is there for a good reason. It's actually the reason I switched from PA to xylon.

Whoa, haven't seen that guy in ages. Nice to see he's got the recognition he deserves now rather than the 100ish thanks he had on the HD2 forums
I got rid of the volume warning
I'm on PA (pa_mako-3.15-16APR2013-180835.zip) and I'm not going to switch to another rom any time soon.
First I had to learn how to use Apktool APKTool Tutorial
Then I followed the instructions at [GUIDE | TUT | HACK] Remove Android 4.2.x safe volume message
What you do is take the framework-res.apk -file from the rom.zip you want to change.
Then decompile it using Apktool, change a number and then compile it again and put the framework-res.apk in a zip and flash (or adb push)
The warning is annoying to me not because I play at ridiculously high volumes but because I always have something else controlling the output to the speakers. When I'm using headphones I have a bt-headset controlling the volume and when in my car its the car stereo.
Tasker sets the media volume to max when any kind of headset is connected just to make levels even so its not full blast in the car speakers one day and no sound the next.

Volume Boost MOD "EDIT" or " Flashable ZIP"

If you are rooted and want to boost your volume for your headset or speaker then go to the system/etc and look for the mixerpaths.xml file using root explorer or which ever file explorer you want to .Press and choose open in text editor . (Make sure to mount RW) Scroll a little less than halfway down until you get to play scenario. In my case I want to boost the headset volume. The default is 80. So on the line under headset RX1 Digital Volume value=80 change it to something above 80 . I wouldnt go any higher than 87 . Repeat this for RX2 Digital Volume because you need to do both left and right so one ear isnt louder than the other. Save and Exit and Reboot. You can do this for the other values for the speaker and the dock sounds etc... Just dont over do it . Its your choice.. This can be used to change default volumes for other sound settings using the same method. . Also if you prefer a flashable zip instead of doing the editing yourself follow the first link. Credits for the Flashable ZIP volume MOD goes to @em0ney14 , so if you like it send a thanks his way . His Volume MOD is set to 94 all the way around so that should more than do the trick . If you prefer a different volume profile send a pm mine or his way . ENJOY!! https://www.copy.com/s/Sbhebjxxg8VQmzVk FOR THOSE WHO MAY NEED IT CHECK POST #2 FOR A LINK TO THE ORIGINAL mixer_paths.xml JUST IN CASE YOU NEED IT AFTER MAKING CHANGES THAT YOU MAY NOT WANT TO KEEP . YOU CAN ALSO JUST USE THE mixer_paths.xml.bak THAT IS CREATED WHEN CHANGE THE ORIGINAL.

LINK FOR DEFAULT mixer_paths.xml . Also a backup called mixer_paths.xml.bak should be created when you change the original. So if you want to revert back just delete the other one and just remove .bak from the other one and reboot. Or download the one below and replace current mixer_paths.xml.

No problem . I was trying to thnk of as many things I knew worked on the S5 that would work on the Note4 as well
So all I'd like to do is boost the output of the headphone. Would that be the speakers and headphones value? I guess I'm trying to mimic what jovy had in his moderate lite boosting mod.

Very Low In-Call Phone Speaker Volume

Hi,
I just got my Nexus 6P. The volume of music is very loud, but of the phone-call speaker mode very weak despite me putting it at max volume while in call.
Is there a fix/ work-around?
Thank you!

Rooting and turning up overall decibals. Though it just sounds like garbage at that point. I have tried it. The speakers are just crappy IMO.
They are great for music, it's just that the phone speakers are extremely weak. Anyone? Help?

I own the phone dude. They are the same speakers. Root it and use a custom kernel to turn up the volume. Not sure what else you think can be done. There is not a separate speaker for only calls.....
I'm not interested in pumping out all my volumes, only phone speaker

Look in your: system/etc/mixer_paths.xml and change all the Digital Volume from 84 to 95 or whatever you want, save, exit and reboot. I haven't had to do this I've been on roms since the 1st hour I received my device. Never noticed the low volume but this is what I did on previous devices and worked fine. Hope that helps.

Since you would have to root to do that, it would be much easier to just install a kernel where you can move a slider to change it. The OP doesn't want all volumes up though. Just phone.
Anyone figure out which one controls just in call ear-speaker volume?

Do you know which line controls the speaker during phone calls ?

Increased headphone volume! Nice.

I just got my G4 (US991 running MM) a few days ago. Low headphone volume was crappy. I found a way to increase the volume using the built-in but hidden 32 bit Hi-Fi DAC controls. Using Nova, use the activity widget. Choose settings, then choose 32 bit Hi-Fi DAC. Be careful moving that volume slider, its very touchy and will get LOUD quick.
BTW, when choosing an activity, press/hold to launch the activity without actually linking that particular activity as the widget. This allows you to play around with activities faster without having to start with a new widget each time.
H815
It just opens sound & notification tab from settings :< H815 running v20d MM .
This is what it does on my uS991.

I have the same thing, sound & notification.
Using Nova Launcher, on homepage, press/hold to add a widget. Choose the Nova Activity widget and place it on the homescreen. The activities list will automatically open to let you choose what activity that widget actually activates. Scroll down to settings, click on it and look for "32 bit Hi-Fi DAC" and click it. The widget will now be linked to this activity. YMMV.
I can now turn up the volume about half-way while listening to music because it actually gets really loud now. Rebooted and the setting stuck. Good luck peeps.
Guys guys. Plug headphones and play music. I got it. But the settings dont really change much Its nice to play with them tho Thanks OP
I finally found the "32 bit Hi-Fi DAC", but when I click, it send me to sound & notification, too bad, thank you.
Found it and it works , good find OP
Do the above steps and add the widget to home screen then plug in some headphones , play music and then click the widget , it does boost the volume quite a bit but I have Viper4Android installed so it might be because of that as to why my volume increases significantly.....

I use viper also. Most def. viper does such a good job. Viper + other sound mods. Are not good to run though. Can fry the voice coil in the speaker from to much boost. I dont use head phones i plug min in to my amp in my car and its to much sometimes with viper alone. Have u ever tried goin into settings in viper and setti g the ui to expert you get loads more options than when u first install it.
I've used Viper before. It was great. Tons of options available. I don't really care for super loud music. I just want to be able to adjust the bass levels so it sounds nice and deep but not boomy. Sometimes equalizers boost the higher frequencies as the bass and it's just boomy and terrible and makes me hate life. Lol. Best equalizer I used was DSPManager during the CM10 days. It made my bass super deep and clean without muddy mids or high frequencies. Perfect. I still keep my Samsung Fascinate as an MP3 player because of DSPManager and it's awesome sound.

I also found a screen mode option that offers, standard, vivid, and something else setting. Tried it, didn't see any difference. I was looking for a scaling option like I found on my S6. Darn.

Update guys: It doesn't seem louder anymore. Was good while it lasted. Sorry for getting everyone's hopes up.
While playing around with this though I noticed that the phone recognizes different devices. I've seen a headphone icon, a headset icon, and an auxiliary device icon pop up in the notification bar. I assume the DSP works differently with different devices maybe? I don't know.

Got me on that one? I've used Dolby Atmos on other devices (Rooted) and it did the same thing? I think what when songs are playing, they'll register higher than half way and you kind of go off of that?
I've never really liked setting up Dolby Atmos, but once it's set up it sounds really good.

did you finally figure out how to keep it from sliding back down I am having the same exact issue.
Hi,
I have the same problem and done an extensive research about it on the web. There are 10 kinds of people: One who can set the equaliser settings like they want (even above the magical 50% mark) and those who experience the problem, that the sliders slide back to 50%. I belong to the latter ones and I'm really pissed off about that, because I bought the Phone because of its famous sound qualities and while holding the finger on the equalizer the sound IS amazing. But I'm not willing to do this every time I play music, so any ideas how to solve this issue?
Greetings,

Hi,
I have the same problem and done an extensive research about it on the web.
Greetings,
Martin

Basically you don't have to use Atmos if you want good sound quality. Atmos is only made to be used with the speakers. It uses the secondary DAC, which is worse overall.
If you want good sound quality install Viper4ARISE.
P.S. If you don't mind a very high noise floor you can use V4A+Atmos+AK4490 patch together on a custom ROM. It's probably the best way to listen to MP3s even though the noise floor might be somewhat high.
