Unfortunately its not the good aosp browser we all know and love from 4.3 and earlier. It now uses chromium webview and therefore has all the issues chrome has and some additional bugs since google didn't even attempt to update it to work properly with chromium webview.

I've been using it for a couple of hours, and I'm yet to see any bugs or issues.
It looks to me like the same browser that I was using before KitKat.
Anyway, I take anything over the total garbage that is Chrome.

This works well enough!

Is there an Option to hide the adressbar when scrolling down?
edit: found it

So far it doesn't allow me to save a page, but it syncs my bookmarks.
Those are 2 of the most important features in a browser to me.

Does this app bring to your device the appropriate version of the AOSP browser? That is, 4.4 to 4.4 device, etc.? I'm also wondering if the file that is changed to *.bak is renamed so that it becomes valid once again when the app is uninstalled.

Some pretty serious bugs (which is to be expected):
Turning on the "Quick Settings" lab results in the address bar area glitching out visually, repeating the top of the page (immediately below) where the address bar would be.
Trying to open an Incognito tab simply Force Closes.

?
How to hide adressbar?
Help, please

The behaviour after double tap is abnormal.....
double tap = zoom-in
After double tap zoom-in, if you try to drag up or down(this is the third tap), it still keep zooming in/out
The double tap triggered the "drag to zoom-in/out mode", this case the third tap become drag to zoom (even after ten second after the double tap)
can this behaviour be disabled?

Chrome has the feature too. Though after a double tap if you don't keep your finger down it just releases back to normal. I did experience the same problem you have on CM11 with the AOSP browser and it make's it completely unusable...

Browser Quick Controls

Anyone else try out these slide-out browser quick controls?
I 'love' them. I turned them on a few days after getting the tab and havent looked back.
How about you?
To enable this feature for the stock browser go to settings - labs - quick controls and make sure the box it ticked. Now in the browser, slide in from the side and a wheel of sorts will pop out with all your controls.
Very slick feature.
I have been using them since day one. Love it.
Yes, they're handy once you get the hang of them.
Very nice, thanks for sharing that tip!

Where is this? Dont have an entry for "labs" under "settings"?
Settings in the browser, not general setting on the tablet. Top right corner in the browser.
I think it actually comes enabled by default on the Xoom; needless to say it was refreshing to see when I first started using the tablet. Using the menu in the upper right hand corner is not as user friendly.
The only thing I have noticed is that it is difficult to initiate controls with the acer case, because the edge comes right up to the screen. I usually have to attempt the gesture a couple of times in order for the controls to come up.

I've never had that problem. Simply slide your finger 'into' the screen, from the bezel. Works like a charm every time and I love how it appears at the exact position your finger made the sliding motion into the page, rather than a single static location.
If I had one feature request, it would be 1 more button you could use to hold it as a handle to slide the wheel up or down the side, and tap it to pin it or unpin it.
Heh - didn't even know this existed until I saw this thread. Not sure I like it though - I usually close the last tab to close the browser (since back makes you step through all pages viewed and home would leave it open.)

How do you close the browser with last tab? The tab disappears and browser turns full screen everytime specially when there's only one tab left. I find it hard to bring the tab to appear again.

funny I know... I open up a new blank one... close the last one and then hit the back button to close the whole thing out... he he... I woudn't mind if the tabs were up there all thetime or use a quick menu to pop it up and down...
You can actually just do a long press on the webpage and it will bring up the tabs at the top, then you can close them.

That's how I do it right now, but sometimes it selects the text for copy/paste instead of displaying the tab. You really have to find an empty spot on the browser page to make it work. Adding a new tab and closing, then closing the last tab requires a really fast finger to catch the last tab. Sometimes I'm slow to click on the last tab and it just hides again. How I wish the default browser has an option to exit, similar to Dolphin browser.
Why the desire to have an exit, to hide the porn your surfing?
Keeping the browser in memory is useful, because that is alot of what I use this thing for.

[solved]Max number of tabs & Always Request Desktop site in Official 4.0.4

So I have flashed the italian version of official ICS rom.
I was wondering is the stock browser can be modded to allow more tabs? and set to always request desktop site?
I have found a few mods but they are for phone ICS, not sure if they would work on tablet ICS.
any suggestions?
Edit : i flashed the deodexed, zipaligned stock 4.0.4 and modified the SecBrowser.apk to enable a maximum of 99 tabs, and some faster animations. i have attached the modified apk here for those who need it. note: only works on deodexed stock 4.0.4

one of the very first things I did:
RE "always request desktop site"
type about:debug in the broswer's address bar
go to the browser's settings
go to the "advanced" (IIRC) tab or something like that
find the voice "UAstring" (IIRC) or something like that to "desktop"
type again about:debug in the broswer's address bar
this setting stays set even after rebooting (which was not always the case in the past)
don't know where/how to change the "8 tabs max" settings but would like to!

No worries and thanks for the info!
When you say doesn't reflow zoomed in text, do you mean the fact that Chrome doesn't properly fit a page on screen when you change pages?
I have noticed that on Chrome every time I go to a new page it is zoomed in and I have to either scroll to see all text or double tap screen to get it to fit. Very annoying and I don't know if that is just a setting or a fact of life.

yep, double tapping only zooms out while in the stock browser it reflows (reformats) the text leaving the zoom level you set and making the page readable without scrolling (make sure to also check this in the settings).
frankly this is one of the most basic functions of a browser and IDK how people can live without it. until Chrome gets this elementary feature it's just worthless crap, to me.
BTW, no settings issue, it's "a fact of life" with Chrome. Can't believe so many people rave about it......
oh and, just checked and the way to change the user agent that I wrote in my earlier reply doesn't work with Chrome.

Where are the Zoom button images located? And Naked Browser Talk

Hey all, I like using the phone one handed and zoom buttons are essential. I also like being able to zoom with just a tap, as opposed to more convoluted methods (xScope/Naked Browser, I'm looking at you...). But the stock Android zoom buttons are ugly and less functional than the ones I had way back when on 2.2 (Bionix for the Samsung Vibrant).
Could anyone tell me where in could find the images for the Zoom buttons? I'd like to replace them with the ones from an older ROM, mentioned above. Think it would be somewhere in the SystemUI.apk?
If anyone is curious, the buttons I would prefer are transparent circles with a black outline. They're a good bit easier to press and you can see elements that would otherwise be obscured.
I'm the developer of Naked Browser. Naked Browser has the option to enable/disable the zoom buttons. It also has the option to enable/disable one-finger zoom. It also allows zoom with just a double-tap. Am I missing something?

Oh snap. No, it's just that one-finger drag zoom has poor performance (just isn't as smooth as it is on xScope). But I love your browser. It's why I mentioned it specifically. My niggle isn't to do specifically with Naked Browser or any other app, it's a system conflict. I think the stock zoom buttons are ugly and I want to swap them out with the zoom buttons I used on a different browser. It's easier to tap a round circle than it is to hit a little tic-tac. Also, the zoom buttons sometimes obscure elements in the bottom right and I have to wait until they fade out, so the transparent zoom circle buttons I mentioned in the first post would solve both of these issues. Rather than having you bloat up your fantastically minimal app, I'd prefer to do my own tinkering and fix the zoom buttons across my system.
I just wanted to say, your browser is fantastic. I found out about it just randomly perusing the big Android Themes and Apps forum and gave it a try. It's my default browser now. While I have your attention, if I could make a suggestion: you know how you have the swipe-from-edge toggle so the menu bars don't appear with unexpected frequency? It works great for making sure the bookmarks bar only opens with deliberate swipes. However, if you could provide a separate toggle for the address and tab bar, that'd be great. I never had a problem with the top bars appearing unintentionally. It's not much of a nuisance. However, in one-handed use, I have to reposition the phone in my hand and then swipe from the top to bring down that bar. On a big phone like the Nexus 4, you can understand how that extra little bit of effort adds up over a long browsing session.
Very cool. Thank you very much.
Let me address what you brought up:
One finger zoom in Naked Browser isn't as smooth as it is on xScope because:
- xScope is for newer devices. Naked Browser supports Froyo and newer and so far I've found that that kind of zooming isn't easy on older devices. That's really not much of an excuse because I could work on it. However, it could take days to figure out. I'm focusing on other features and bug fixes right now. Furthermore,
- I haven't used xScope in a long time but one finger zoom seems to work good enough in Naked Browser (no?). For comparison, it seems to work like crap in Google Maps, last I checked.
Regarding changing the zoom button pix, I use a smaller screen than you so I don't like the +/- buttons in a browser. I pinch zoom and I do it with one hand: small phone / big hands. Regardless, I'm adding your request to my list of items for the pro version.
Regarding adding the separate option for the menu gestures, I added those options (double swipe & swipe from edge) as afterthoughts. I feel that an experienced user of Naked Browser should turn both of these off because they've developed a feel for the menus, knowing instinctively how to avoid opening the bookmarks sidebar and top menu. For me it took about a week to get comfortable with it. Now, I think it is very efficient.
That being said, I may have messed up the gesture settings for larger screens as I don't have a tablet. What do you think about all this? Is it very hard to avoid opening the bookmarks menu? Tell me more about it, please.
Anyway, I hope you have luck changing the +/- on your devices and I do appreciate your feedback on Naked Browser. You're one of the few people I've seen mention stuff like this. Got my attention!
This is hijacking your thread for my app, so if you want to PM me or join me in the xda naked browser thread the feel free.
Thanks again, man. :good:
Hey, you've got a great app and I certainly don't mind helping it get more exposure. I know it's not a priority for you right now, but if it gets really popular, I'm sure you'll add a ton of lightweight features. That's how xScope became the best browser on Gingerbread!
On my Nexus 4, I've found that the bookmarks menu shows up by accident much more often than the URL/tab bar, and it's much more obtrusive when it does. It'd be nice to disable the bookmarks bar. I actually use the bookmarks menu a ton, so perhaps a better option would be to incorporate the menu button menu with the the bookmarks menu.
Also, I'm not sure if my options are causing it or its an inherent behavior, but it's inconvenient to have to scroll all the way to the top to bring up the URL/tab bar. I really wouldn't mind if it appeared every time I made any downward swipe. Maybe to accommodate other users, make the top half or quarter of the screen a zone that can pull up the URL/tab bar when the user swipes down from that region.
I basically want the navigation features of xScope but with the minimal, clean appearance of Naked Browser. I stopped using xScope because it's so bloated and unstable now. Naked Browser is 90% perfect for me. The 10% is just the menu behavior and tab navigation. xScope, for example, uses double tap and left/right to navigate between adjacent tabs while double tap and up/down to zoom. But if this decreases performance as it did on xScope, I'm happy with Naked Browser the way it is.
Maybe I need to optimize the swipe sensitivity for devices like the Nexus 4. I need to check one out, but for now the next update will reduce sensitivity somewhat. Regarding the separate gesture options, I had thought about adding them but I was resistant because I don't want to clutter the options view. However, I think it is the right thing to have and you've convinced me of how sorely it is needed. The next update will have them! I've tried it out and I like it.
If you press the device menu key it should show the top menu from anywhere on the page. Devices without a menu key should have 3 dots in a row that act as the menu key. Making it appear for every downward swipe is an interesting idea. I think that this would be more suited for larger screens though. I will make a note of this idea. There already is an option to start gestures from the screen edge for both URL bar and sidebar.
I haven't used xScope in years and it doesn't run on any of my devices. I think that if you give Naked Browser some time (about a week) you'll start to become accustomed to the menus. If you can get past the frustrating phase I think that you may find that the menus are very efficient. Of course, if the gesture sensitivity is wrong for your device then that's a different story. I really need to check this out.
Double-tap and swipe to change tabs shouldn't cause much of a performance problem (although I'd have to try it out to know for sure). I was going to allow customizations of this sort of thing in the pro version. For example, double tap and swipe to go quickly to the very top or bottom of the web page. The volume buttons could be used in the same way.
Thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it!
I figured out where the zoom buttons are. They're in framework-res.apk/res/drawable-xhdpi.

Things you don't know about your HTC one

Just thought I would start a thread that could be useful about things you didn't know about your HTC one
I only found out tonight that if you swipe down your notification bar with 2 fingers it takes you straight to the shortcut tabs
That made me realise there are probably loads of features and gestures I don't know about?
Here is a list compiled from the thread...
1 : Swipe down with 2 fingers on notification bar takes you straight to shortcuts (Android 4.2 version only)
2 : If you scroll with 2 fingers in contacts, gallery, music, and many other apps, it scrolls much faster (using it in the contacts list goes through the alphabet, using it in the text converstaion list goes through dates of conversations)
3 : You can pinch zoom text-messages
4 : Double tap your Bluetooth button with camera active to remotely take a snap
5 : In camera, from the top swipe down and it'll switch from back to front camera and viceversa
6 : Tapping on the statusbar while in the app drawer or blinkfeed, music, people, and message app brings you straight up
7 : You don't have to pull up the lock or the time on the lock screen - swipe up anywhere to unlock your phone. Same goes for answering a call
8 : You can increase the volume on your tv via the volume rocker on your phone instead of the on screen buttons
9 : Quickly double tapping the home button brings up the recent apps list
10 : Three finger swipe from left to right on the homescreen brings you to share files menu
11 : You can adjust the brightness of the torch/flashlight with the volume rocker
12 : Hold down the power button and tap the home key to take a screenshot
13 : Holding the back button in the browser brings you to history
14 : In the photo gallery's edit>effects screen (under the magic wand icon), you can customise every preset by tapping and holding its thumbnail and dragging it to the "customise" bar that appears on the right. You can even start applying custom effects from scratch by doing this with the "no effects" thumbnail. You can then save the created preset
Also on that screen, pressing the 'A' button provides options go change the white balance of the picture (as you would normally pre-select in the camera app). A = 'as shot' but you can change it to cloudy, fluorescent, etc and also a couple of options the camera app doesn't have - shady and tungsten.
15 : If you have the camera app open and turn off the phone, the lockscreen will be inactive, meaning when you press the power button again you go straight back to the camera app, no need to unlock
16 : Select "Show Magnifier" in the Accessibility menu and you get a magnifying lens that pops up when you are editing text
17 : Long press home for google now (depending on setup sometimes home and up also takes you to google now)
18 : In Google play if you are listening to a song and have the album artwork up (the screen where you have your pause/play, next/previous track)
You can swipe right to left to skip the track it left to right to go to the previous track. There's a cool sliding in/out animation too.
The coolest feature though, is that you don't have to press back to get back to your library or playlist. You can swipe down from the songbtitle and your library of songs is waiting behind it.
19 : In the Stock Browser go to Menu>Settings>Labs to switch on "Quick Controls". Slide thumb from left or right edge to open quick controls and hide app and URL bars.
Also swipe across the keyboard to easily switch to the numbers and symbols pages!
20 : You can access HTC's hidden Self diagnostic tool by following steps:
Go to dialer,
Dial *#*#3424#*#*
You will enter HTC's self diagnostic tool
You can check if all the parts and sensors on your device is working.
21 : If you're watching tv and have the tv remote enabled and you're getting a call it automatically mutes the tv.
22 : There's a visualizer and karaoke player embedded in the HTC music app. Just click the musical note icon when playing a popular song that's on Gracenote. The app will automatically download lyrics and sync them to the song.
By default, this only works on Wi-Fi. This can be changed in Music settings.
23 : You can also set a different wallpaper for the lockscreen than for the homescreen by going to settings -> personalize -> lockscreen and then settings for the wallpaper lockscreen.
24 : Rotating your calculator to landscape provides scientific functions like sin cos and tan.
25 : if you leave the TV app open to your remote and you lock your phone...it unlocks right back Into the TV remote. I've also noticed it just turning itself on when I pick it up!
26 : There's a cool trick in the camera app.
If you touch to focus, and hold your finger there for about a second, it will activate Focus and Exposure lock, until you tap on another spot, which will turn it off again. It's a handy feature, especially when you want to recompose. (android 4.2 version only)

Not trying to rain on your parade but that is a Android feature introduced in 4.2.
You should go to settings and then display and you can now set the home key as the menu button when long pressing.
In the HTC keyboard settings, you can enable Swype and in advanced you can even set the swype colour.
Another one, if you scroll with 2 fingers in gallery, music, and many other apps, it scrolls much faster
Pretty known one.. In the browser menu, you can enable flash player
There are lots of fun features with zoe's after you've made them (comparable to GS4) like sequence shot, removing objects, and waaay more

Also one more thing many have not realized yet. There is no file limit size when transferring files to the phone. No more FAT32 4GB file restrictions. That's the benefit of having ONLY MTP, but you lose out on faster transfers and universal USB Mass Storage support. You can fit a 20GB movie in if you want and if you have the space.

the two finger pulldown is an AOSP 4.2 built in feature, the CM implementation is an option to swipe from left or right edge, AOKP has it as well, this can be disabled and the 2 swipe feature functions as normal.

[Q] Opera Mobile vs. Dolphin and Landscape

I think I've tried every browser that will install on a rooted NT. I'm down to Opera Mobile (and Classic Mobile--are they the same but from different markets??) and Dolphin.
I like Opera because I can zoom and save my aging eyes a bit. I hate Opera because I prefer to browse in landscape mode and I have yet to find a rotation locking app that will keep Opera steady. It flips and flops, back and forth at unexpected times. And, of course, there is no setting in Opera for orientation. Right now I'm using Tasker to invoke first Wi-Fi and then the Rotation Locker plugin. It works almost always on opening and sometimes stays...but not always.
Is there something that will ALWAYS keep Opera Mobile in landscape?
I like Dolphin (although I once discarded it) because it CAN be locked into landscape and will STAY there. I love that I can set the lower hardware buttons to Volume control and Dolphin will scroll with them. Flash is sort of amusing (hooray I got it working!), but it's not a good reason to stay with Dolphin. I hate Dolphin because it has no way to zoom--except that it does, but only on its own terms. It automatically zooms when you need to do something like a form entry. In the Settings panel the admonition to show the zoom buttons is ignored. You can assign a gesture to Zoom. It will reproduce it and confirm that your scribble on the screen is a "match", but it ignores all gestures as far as I can tell.
Have I missed something with Dolphin? Is there a way to zoom on a screen?
Have I missed another browser that is actually working as "well" as these two?
[SOLVED ZOOM!] OMG! Dolphin does respond to gestures if you're not an idiot like me. Tapping the "dolphin" button in the bottom left corner gives three options. The middle one goes to a blank screen on which to draw a gesture and after you have done so, it returns to the current browser tab with the effect done! So you can program a "Z" or something for "zoom" and it WORKS!!!!!!!!! (so do all the other gestures, if you can remember that many)
Hey,
How did you manage to install flash plugin for dolphin? I though it only works with android 2.3+

I've had good luck with "rotation locker". You have to long press the middle landscpe mode button (which on my nst has no text) to keep Opera running in the background. It then forces Opera back into the landscape mode despite disturbing events

I can't take credit for this (original thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1555549), but I may be able to smooth out the edges that this noob found a little intimidating.
1. Follow the link given in the post linked above to download the "flashupdate_signed.zip" file. Ignore the rest of the stuff there.
2. Unzip that file. You will need the three Flash plugin apks in the /system/app folder. They go on your SD card for installation later.
3. You can also copy the three .so files in the /system/lib folder to your SD card (or dropbox, or use ADB, etc.) These will need to be placed in the /system/lib folder of the Nook so you need Root Browser or similar with SuperUser rights.
4. When you have moved the three .so files to /system/lib on the Nook check that their permissions are the same as other files in that folder. Mine were not and I had to change the permissions to match the other files.
5. Reboot
6. Install the three Flash apks.
Note, this shows up as Flash 10.1 in my ADW Manager but when I go to test it seems to be 9.x. It works some places and not others, but I find that's true of older Flash plugins anyway.
Don't forget that you have to enable Flash in the Settings for Dolphin as well.
I have just installed "rotation locker" on my NST, and it works just fine with both Opera Mobile and my PDF readers. Thank you! I assess it through a long-press of my top-left Nook Button, and can switch back and forth between portrait and landscape modes at whim.

I didn't understand this at first but I was able to set Tasker to use this background option of Rotation Locker just for the few apps (like Opera Mobile and Crosswords(US) that resisted locking into landscape. Works like a charm! Thanks for the tip
