1. go to any empty space on your homescreen, long press the empty space, press setting, turn on google now.
2. if you dont have an option to enable google now there, install google search then try again.

why are you trying version 2.7? we are on version 3+ now. go to the play store to get it, not some sideloaded version.

must off been a bad flash or something...do not know what else to say...have you done the usual going into settings and clearing cache and data?

Google product forums are filled with this complaint. It's not a bad flash, Google Now is just not there for some users.

Google Search 2.6 works on Kitkat but first you have to uninstall the new version. The reason why it can activate Google Now as opposed to the newer versions is because it does not check the location settings.

I wonder if anyone figured how to get Google Now back so far.

I had the same issue since updated my N4 to 4.4 via official factory image.
Here's my solution but requires ROOT!
1) If you're using new GE launcher (it's integrated with Google Search app), uninstall it and choose default N4 Android 4.4 launcher.
2) Clear data and cache for currently installed Google Search app and uninstall updates, it should revert back to 3.0 version.
3) Download Google Search 2.6.7 here. Rename it to velvet.apk DO NOT INSTALL!
4) Open your favorite file manager with root option (I use Solid Explorer). Navigate to root/data/dalvik-cache and delete [email protected]@[email protected]
5) Navigate to root/system/priv-app, firstly backup velvet.apk and then delete it.
6) Copy velvet.apk file that you just downloaded and renamed to the same directory root/system/priv-app and change permission to 644.
7) Reboot device
8) Open Google Search app Google now opt-in options will appear, agree and go on.
9) Open Play Store and update Google Search to lastest 3.1 version.
10) Again navigate to root/system/priv-app and restore system original velvet.apk which you just backed up. It is important because when new OTA arrives for yoiur device it will check all root/system/ directory for any changes. OTA update will fail if it detects that user changed system files.
11) Reboot device once again
Google now should work without problem. Also now you can install new GEL, it should work with new Google now features including dedicated left panel on home screen.

I appreciate your effort, but it is not really a solution: nobody should be forced to root their device to get back some functionality, which was accessible before the upgrade.

off course not. But it's best way to fix this issue if you already rooted your device for some other purposes.
I was seeking for solution since updated to 4.4 for 2 days. Tried different methods, with and without root but nothing helped.
It seems like users should wait Google's response for this issue to get a fix.

cant reinstall Google Search

Hi, I've got a problem I cant fix.
I wanted to downgrade Google Search so I uninstalled updates and it went back to stock. I then installed the version I wanted. v3.1
Now, this is my problem. I DONT want it to show in Google Play as an update so I tried to make a updated APK like I have with many other apps where I like older versions.
Now I used Lucky Patcher and that didn't like making the modded APK but it did back a backup. So I clicked RESTORE BACKUP. and guess what? It deleted the app instead of restoring it.
Now when I try to install it from either any APK or even directly from Google Play it keeps saying the device is full and fails to install.
I have over 1GB free. I've deleted about 10 apps and still keeps saying device is full. I've reinstalled those 10 apps and they fit and install without problems and I still have over 1GB free.
HOW do i get Google Search reinstalled? I dont want to reflash it as I will loose ROOT and that was a big enough ***** to install the first time.
I have a stock recovery menu. Rooted Galaxy S4 i9505 4.3 official firmware.
I did delete delvik cache and the cache in recovery menu.
I cant find any other ways to restore it? I tried titanium backup with the backup I have of it but that never ends when I click restore. It doesn't finish, doesn't do anything just sits there saying its restoring but never stops still I kill it even after 30 mins it was still restoring.
Anyone??
I did try Titanium Backup and made a update.zip and that fails both from SDCARD and ADB as its not signed and its stock recovery.
Do I have to install a custom recovery? Can I use the one I used with 4.2.2 or do I have to get a 4.3 version? That was i9505-cwm-recovery-6.0.3.2-4.tar
Anyone?
I'm stumped. I dont have a clue whats going on and why it wont install and why its saying its full when its got 1GB free.

Thanks for the reply.
Was hoping not to do that.
BUT, everything still works without it anyway and as it stole the use of my Bluetooth button it wont be missed but I do like the Google Now alerts.
What happened with me was the latest few versions stole the link to the bluetooth button. Before when you pressed the button you had the option of S-Voice or Google Search and now the newer versions dont have that option and always use Google Search and you have no way to revert back to S-Voice. I had Google Search disabled for a while but I want to use Google Now so I need the app but not the new version so an old version works fine. I think the last is 3.1? I didn't try 3.2 but I know 3.4 has that forced Google Search now.

I got it installed and fixed a few other apps at the same time.
I went to root /data/data and found the google search was a 0kb file so I deleted it and it installed fine after that. I also had a few other apps that were playing up so I deleted those folders and they now install and work fine.
So in the end no need to reflash just remove the corrupt files and its all fixed.
I did find out Google Search 3.3 is the last of the good versions, 3.4 is when it steals your bluetooth's connection and uses it for its own without letting you choose default.
As S-Voice is a Samsung feature those not with a Samsung phone wont care but those like me that use S-Voice will be annoyed that the latest Google Search removes the choice. I recommend to disable so it goes back to default version then get v3.3 and install that and use an app to remove it from updating in Google Play then all will be good.
it's solved right?
but anyway maybe you could try to flash gapps . Don't now if it will works but i good to try anyway ;D

When uninstalling on stock, you only delete apk file. You have also to delete corresponding odex odex file in system/
Then, you have to remove also corresponding folder in system/data/data
Then, you can try to reinstall the app.

I fixed it. There was a corrupt file in /data/data and as soon as I deleted it, it finally installed fine after that.
Now trying to stop Google Play from upgrading and also removing it from the update list is another problem.

I do that and it doesn't work with Titanium Backup.
I want to remove it completely so it doesnt even see it in the Google play store.
In Titanium Backup you can remove it from Google Play but that option doesn't work as I've had it removed twice and its updated both times.
So far its working. I've turned it into a user app and removed it from the store and its not updated yet but I will give it till tomorrow and if it auto updated like the last 2 times I will just uninstall it again and not use it. Its more trouble than its worth anyway.

I want it installed, I want to use Google Now but I don't want to update to the bad version and I don't want Google Play to keep telling me there is an update so I want it removed from Google Play.
As I said Titanium Backup does have a "Detach from Market" option which does remove it but after a few hours it updates anyway so that option doesn't work.
When you make a custom APK it's not seen in the Market so that works but Google Search doesn't work when you customise the APK.

I've unticked that box so Google Search won't auto update but it's still in the update list and it still gives notifications that it needs to be updated.
It needs to be removed from Google Play, that's the only way to stop it from updating or asking to update and it's the only app I can't customise that I've tried. I've modded many apps and they work and they are removed from Google Play but this one I can't.
I also want other apps to auto update so I dont want to turn that option off.

YES YOU CAN.
Just install Market Fixer and that removed it. But it does sometimes show up after a reboot. I rebooted twice and it showed up the first time but not the 2nd time.
So it looks like I've fixed the problem.
Titanium Backup's 'Detach from Market' doesn't work but Market Fixer does the same thing and that does work.
The problem I think is its a system app, its used by my Google account, its used by half the system so its not easy to hide from the App Store. As other apps aren't used the same way they are easily hidden but Google Search isn't.

[APP] Android L Launcher

Just wanted to mention that the official Android L launcher works on our Tabs
I have attached the .apk
You have to change the build.prop to get the new UI
set ro.build.version.codename to L and reboot
It works also as a system app, no FC's.
Supports 4.2.2 / 4.3 / 4.4.2
Note: You have to update/download the latest Google Search app and Google Mail may force closing
Proceed with caution, you may end up having boot-loops !

UA,
hi i would ask that you amend your post to mention this launcher requires google search to be functional.
As per your instructions I did so and the launcher does not register as system app without google search,
and on regular install call for updated google search to function.
thank you for reading.

No i did not, i just installed given apk (it updated current google now launcher), and changed build.prop
anyway, i tryed to fix premisions, and delete the google launcher from the app folder from recovery, but still rebooting continued.
and while trying to fix the build.prop from the recovery, i funked the system a bit, so a reflashed the whole rom again, so I'm back at the begining... (no new launcher, but tab works fine...)

It seems like, you screwed up inside the build.prop
Or, it only works as a system app on 4.4.2, that would be bad.

well, i used root explorer to edit build.prop, and i didnt change anything except switch REL with L...
but i guess build.prop was screwed somehow, it managed to stay on for a while before the reboot a few times (for about half a minute), but it kept giving the fc error screens for play services, mail, etc, and then restarted again.
I will try it in a few minutes!

Fix for Play Store disconnect after reboot.

If u have installed play-store via Nokia X tools 1.2 then you are familiar with this issue, Play-store gets disconnected after reboot. I have tried several method and this is the easiest. After reboot go to settings/ Time and date, disable automatic time update, advance time for one day. Now open Play-store, if it shows disconnected then press retry. Try to manually close it in recent apps if play-store is opened once after reboot. When play-store is working fine you can turn on automatic time update to fix the time. Hope it helps Press thanks if it helps.

Have verified, but failed. I know another some solutions for the connection issue.
1. Remove Google Account and add it again.
2.Use Nokia X tools 1.2 remove your google apps and add it again.
3.Go to setting->Accounts, choose your google account and go to account sync, you will find some items can't be synced now. And you need uncheck them, then open google play again. It will be ok.
About the solution3, I haven't verified it. But today I sovled this issue with solution3. My google contacts can't be synced. I unchecked it and google play is ok. My version is 2.1.0.11

Changing date method is working:good:
TRY ODEXing play
1.disable auto-update using lucky patcher.(reboot after)
2. odex all sys apps using lucky patcher (reboo)
3.then remove ur google account and re-sync.(untick people details and calendar)
Thnx
@ drigger_one Will Odexing playstore permanently fix it??
Permanent FIx
@ shafiazad
Here it is
Permanent FIx( Requires More Effort):
1.Perform nandroid backup.( for this u need to install custom recovery in step 2. and boot into recovery and make backup)
2.Flash ur phone {stock rom} ( Oh yes i did said that)
3. Root using nokia x2 tools. install custom recovery [http://www.mediafire.com/download/eu9kwxptmc93dau/NOKIA_X2_CUSTOM_RECOVERY.zip]
thnx to Frozentears
4.Deodex your rom ( This Fixes evrythng).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia-x2/development/rom-nokia-x2-ds-stock-deodex-rom-2-1-0-t2951903
5.Install Play Store(Nokia x2 tools)
6.Here You have to restore . **But dont perform backup from recovery ( evrything will b undone)
Use "Nandroid Manager" and browse to ur saved backup image and individually select apps and restore its data.
7. Enjoy!!

disable automatic updating?

last night i was using my nexus player and out of nowhere it just randomly decided to shut down. next thing i know upon reboot it tried to update but since im rooted and such it failed. the problem here was that it screwed up boot and i had to wipe the cache which erased most settings.
Is there a way to make the nexus player not try to automatically update? disable update in settings for that matter (in case someone tried to get cute and do it while im not around)?

LOL!!!! I'm going through this frustration right now. Couple things I've done first install a custom recovery it won't let you update. if you do get the endless bootloop clear cache and it will stop (the update is downloaded to the cache). It might do that twice then will pass. This worked for me until factory restored my device. I ended up forgetting and now I'm marshmallow.
Next thing I'm gonna try is pushing a build.prop from the next update to /system. It hasn't been pushed yet but they usually release it on the site with the factory images. If I don't flash aosp first.
Yes but i wonder if theres a way to disable it. it sucks that i have to clear cache every time it attempts to update. its happened 3 times on me now. i will try to install my own custom recovery so hopefully thats all thats needed but i noticed android also downloads the update in the background, which probably wastes more space if your not planning on upgrading.
Once you clear the cache it deletes the update. Almost forgot I read some where here on xda that deleting otacerts.zip will stop it from downloading entirely. Not suggesting you try it but next update I'm gonna
You might want to try the method I suggested at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62865084&postcount=6 and see if that works or not.
Thanks for your solution but unfortunately, at least for me, i cant seem to get it to work. i can sideload and launch the disable service app, but when i try going to ANY actual apps or system services, it just crashes. Not sure why. :/

Tried this, and while it did stop the download from verifying, it just caused the nexus player to loop over and over by constantly downloading the update again, only to fail and repeat the process. This worked for a couple of days while i found the proper workaround, so thanks. keep in mind though that because it just caused the device to keep redownloading, this method could cause those on limited data plans to quickly go over.

for whatever reason service disabler did not want to work for me. it caused a constant crash every time i tried clicking on any service within the app. I did however, eventually come across "My Android Tools" by the same developer as service disabler. Using this app i was able to disable the systemupdateservice within both google framework and google play services. I had to use a bluetooth mouse to navigate though, as the remote didnt want to work on its own. Once i used this app and followed your directions, now when i attempt to do a manual system update in settings, it just acts like im on the current version, which i assume means it fails instantly. Thanks so much man! so far so good!
For anyone curious, the app is:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.myandroidtools&hl=en
keep in mind you may need to connect a mouse somehow to the nexus player to navigate and disable the services.
Thanks I'm gonna downgrade today and find out

I'm glad to hear that things worked out for you with this method and the alternate app by the same developer. I've been running Android 6.0 Marshmallow after flashing its factory image but once the monthly security updates and unwanted reboots in to TWRP start happening, I may disable the updates using this method.
How do you sideload either service disabler app? Neither are listed on apkmirror and searching the play store in browser doesn't give an option to install for nexus player.

Copy and paste the Google Play URL for the app (which was posted earlier in this thread) in to box at the top of https://apkpure.com/region-free-apk-download and press the green download button. Then upload the APK to your Google Drive account and install it through ES File Explorer on your Nexus Player.
please correct me if I'm wrong
As the title said, please correct me if I'm wrong but this method isn't working in the nexus player MRA58K since the apk used to disable the updated only supports Lolipop, I tried in my nexus 7 running 5.0 and it's working flawless but the apk crash on Android 6.0, thanks in advance for your help.

Not for me. After granting "my android tools" access, I go to disable systemupdateservice, and popup says it can't access root privelages ( Supersu is up to date. I'm not really sure why I even rooted and installed twrp recovery on this device, but I wish I had stock recovery back so I wouldn't be in this mess.
@pokes135, make sure you have the latest version of My Android Tools installed. You can flash a stock system or recovery image using Nexus Root Toolkit if necessary.

You can install a firefox browser addon called apk downloader which will inject a button when you view the app in google play website to download the apk.
Use any root explorer or es file explore
make/mount system as rw
navigate to /system/etc/security
rename otacerts.zip into otacerts.zip.bak or whatever you want.
It will stiop the automatic update completely.
If you need ota update you need to rename th otacerts.zip back

Thanks for the info. Much more straight forward to do then sideloading app while hoping the app won't force close.
adb connect 192.168.xxx.xxx:5555
adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
mv /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip /system/etc/security/otacerts-disabled.zip
mount -o remount,ro /system
Pr-requisite: must be rooted and ADB Wireless already installed.
Don't use this method (renaming ota_certs)! It will just cause the updates to continuously download and fail, then start downloading again. You'll use a lot of bandwidth this way, and if you have a data cap, this is a sure fire way to bust through it.

Android 4.1.1 HU side-load issues

Hello everyone! I have a Blaupunkt Cape Town 940 US android head unit. So far I love it! But...
I am having issues adding/flashing Google Apps to it. It is rooted, and like the title says it is 4.1.1. I can't seem to get the unit to go into recovery, if there is one built into it. I can flash a map update to it from the right side micro SD slot by hitting 'power' and 'home' at the same time from the off position. When I try to flash the 'gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip' to it by the same method, it just errors out and never gives me the option to flash a zip, reboot or anything you would normally see from a flash recovery.
Some of the .apk's in the above zip can be installed and other cannot. I can get the play store to install, but not the services or framework, or anything else from the zip for that matter - I get a parse error. The play store just says it can't connect to the server and has a retry button. It does have a connection to the internet. I can install other 3rd party apps by navigating to the apk from the stock file manager.
Can anyone elaborate on how to flash GApps to this unit, or how to side-load them with the apk's? There is not much info on the net for this unit. I am close but can't figure it out.
Thanks everyone!

I ran to the same problems couple of days ago of trying to install Gapps into my unbranded chinese headunit and figured it out last night how to get Gapps installed. My recommendation for you is as following (Require root access)
1. Go online and search for google installer.apk and system app mover.apk and install both into your headunit
2. Run google installer and look for google play (it's in chinese but you should be able to figure it out by the icon)
3. Click on google play and it should prompts you to install other 4 related google app as well ie. Google framework etc.
4. Once you have all those installed, run system app mover. (This is where you require root access)
5. Search for those 4 related google app that you just installed and move them to system (You have to be clicking on the app and move them one by one)
6. Reboot and you should have google app installed. (The version is quite old but it'll update by itself with the newest version)
Cheers

Hmm, this seems a little risky. Is there an English version of this process? Any other ideas? Thanks boyito!!
easiest way to install google services to the 940 is to send email to Blaupunkt support. They can send you a apk that will install the services. It is not supported but will load without any other things to do. I used it and have had all google's services including email, maps, store and more with no problem.

Hey guys... I downloaded this apk as well but cannot get it to work. The ReadMe!! says to root the device but when following the instructions I cannot find where it is saying to click "touch 6x OS Version". When installing the apk it installs fine but when I open it, it just says reboot when finished but then goes away and never actually installs anything.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Excuse me for my bad english but i've got the same problem. In fact, when i unzipped the file, i did not see the file text which was joined:
Please note that you install and apply root on your own risk.
Please copy GSINSTALLER.APK to an USB kay and follow this steps:
1: ROOT device: SYSTEM SETTINNGS -> SOFTWARE VERSION -> touch 6x OS VERSION -> new point DEVELOPER OPTIONS will appear -> select ROOT and confirm it.
2: Install PLAYSTORE: Open APPS -> open FILE EXPLORER -> select EXTERNAL USB -> look for GSINSTALLER.APK and install it -> ACCEPT SUPER USER request -> ACCEPT the UNINSTALL request.
I don't realy understand the final step (accept the uninstall request?) but, after a final shut-off, i've got Google Play on my Cape Town 945

Thanks for the reply. I did see the readme but didn't realize that "touch 6x OS VERSION" meant to actually press OS VERSION 6 times. I'm a little slow sometimes. Anyway I just tried it again and it worked perfectly. Works great!

nobody's perfect I did'nt see the readme.txt at the beginning! Now, i try to install TomTom but it seems to be a problem of compatibility
Anyone using other Bluetooth devices rather than phones? I tried to connect OBDII scanner to my unit but it failed to pair, just like that = "Pairing Failed" message. Have a theory that the unit may have a limitation - to connect only the BT devices with phone/sound services. I was going to use lots of other yummies - BT tyre pressure app, BT front camera, but now I'm not sure...
Hi... This unit does not have the Bluetooth SPP (Serial Port Protocol) so it cannot be used with an OBD2 interface to display OBD apps on-screen (Torque, Dashcommand, etc).
