Settings/tips to brighten the display on the LG G Pad 8.3 - G Pad 8.3 General

Hello fellow G pad owners!
As much as I absolutely love my LG G Pad (black model). I think that LG really dropped the ball on the display brightness levels on the screen. For gaming, internet browsing, everything looks fine, but try and watch a movie with the display below 60% and it's really hard to see anything during the darker scenes in a movie. Well, I wanted to start this thread for people to share their settings/tips to help others who want a better better display on their devices. For me, I have been using an app called Screen Adjuster, which does not require root. While it does not brighten the screen as much as I would like, it does "lighten" up the contrast a bit for me which helps during those dark scenes when viewing movies. My settings using the app are:
App brightness: 100%
Contrast: -71%
System brightness at 65%
With this setting, my display looks much "brighter" and my battery life is still great. I can get through an entire day of gaming, web surfing and video streaming without having to charge my device.
Please post your comments, questions and all suggestions on your display settings recommendations here to help others.
Thanks

Yep, this is why I'm going to be looking hard at the HP slate 8 when it comes out. I really wish the dog hadn't knocked the note 8 out of my lap - I could continue using it happily for many months more, aside from the damaged screen.
The gpad is too dim for me to use, even with making screen adjustments as best I could, since I use my devices outdoors as well as indoors.

I saw you mention this over at Androidcentral.com. Bad dog, bad dog!! lol
I don't know man, my screen is fine now regardless of whether I'm using it indoors or outdoors now. Even without my settings listed, I never had a problem playing games or surfing the internet, it was only when watching dark-scene movies where it became an issue.
If you really look at it, this tablet has much more pros than cons about it. I don't remember the last Android tablet that I owned that had such an amazing resolution, solid build quality, great battery life and works great out of the box with no reboots/glitches to speak of! I mean, really, I had to double check to make sure that I was using an android tablet and not an Ipad! lol
This tablet works really smoothly, without a hitch. And being able to hold it with one hand while reading on that beautiful, high res screen is awesome!

The gamma is a bit on the low side -- around 2.0.
On many (most?) tablets the "brightness" is really the backlight control rather than a true brightness control (adjusting black level). The two controls should be independent for optimum results.

At the moment, using that appi have it set to:
Blue +6
Contrast -55
System brightness:35-45% night-day

For me with your settings it is far too washed out and lacking detail make it harder to read.
I set mine by using my retina ipad as a comparison. Adding the blue makes the white more natural and the colours match more. E.g. the Facebook app blue now matches.

You are right about my settings making things appear a little more washed out. I need to find the perfect balance for casual reading and movie watching on this thing. I do prefer a brighter screen than a duller looking one though, so I have to keep tinkering around with the settings.

Just so you know, the video player app has its own independent brightness setting. when you hit the menu button you should see an option for brightness.

Filter Your Screen App
I posted this in the Help and Troubleshooting forum on Saturday. Perhaps it needs to be here, too.
The "Filter Your Screen - Free" app has dramatically improved video playback using the LG Video viewer, BS Player, and MX Player. The settings that work for me are: Alpha 30; Red 200; Green 200 and Blue 220. I'm sure there are many variations, but I tried to keep it simple.
When not viewing a video, I turn the Filter off and it seems to help extend battery life.
One question: Does anyone have any experience with this app? If so, does it damage a display over time?
Thanks.

I'm thinking of getting one of these to go with my G2 which I love. However I will definitely be using it outside a lot and I've read mixed reviews on that. Some say it's unusable outside, while others say it's fine. Could some people here who own one please share their views on outdoor usage?

As we are all aware bright sunlight kills mobile phone screens and tablets have just the same issue .
But due to the LG 8.3 brightness issues as this review
At 273 lux, the G Pad's screen is far dimmer than the tablet category average of 359 lux and well off the iPad mini's mark of 432 lux. The Galaxy Tab 3 8-inch offered a higher rating of 477 lux, while the Kindle Fire HDX topped out at 480 lux.
Then I think the LG 8.3 is not for you sorry as its great little tablet

:good: great tip

Im using the Screen Adjuster app but for some reason it changes colours/contrast for everything besides the navigation bar (looks more noticeable when contrast is changed).
Im using Madhi Rom, so not sure if it's the rom or the app. Anyone else have this problem?

HTC SCLD3 Colour Saturation

The SCLD3 Display provides extrem wide angles and extrem high pixel density, but what about the Color Saturation?
I have seen the Droid DNA in Real Life and the color Saturation is worse!!

How the SLCD3 compares to the Droid DNA, One X and Galaxy S3 in terms of Calor Saturation?
Who has more Colour Saturation? I dont want so much Saturation like the S3 but not so less like the Droid DNA/Butterfly!
Supposedly the droid dna has a worse screen than the one x , dimmer and with worse color accuracy, i hope its not the case with the one :crying:

The screen on the Butterfly is the best there is on a phone: its colour saturation is PERFECT.

Just came back from the HTC event in Liverpool today. The screen is one of the best I have seen. The iPhone 4s which my friend was using loses out at the first glance. You wouldn't be able to see any better screen than this with existing devices in the market.

That was one reviewers opinion. Gizmodo maybe. Can't remember. Anyways I have the evo 4g lte which is the same screen as the one X. I also have the dna and that claim is ridiculous. Screen is amazing. It's better than the one X.

Apparently it isn't very bright like the DNA and Butterfly.
Played around with htc one and got chance to compare it to Xperia z too. The difference is staggering both 1080p but htc one blows z out of the water.
Everything so much sharper, crisper on the one. Best screen out there IMHO.

If those numbers are correct, then colour accuracy may be very slightly worse than the Butterfly - colour temperature pushed a little to blue, and slightly over-saturated greens - but still very impressive. Better than the One X, especially in terms of black-level. Not exactly optimal testing conditions, either, so worth keeping an open mind.

What you're talking about, I think, is a matter of personal preference.
There is actually a recognised international standard which defines what TVs and compute displays are supposed to look like: it says exactly what colour white or red should be. If your TV (say) is calibrated to that standard then what you see on your screen when watching a movie is exactly what the guys who made the movie and mastered the recording intended it to look like.
The display on the Butterfly is closer to that standard than any other phone display that I'm aware of, particularly in terms of colour accuracy. So, objectively, the colours on the Butterfly screen are correct. Other displays have MORE colour saturation, yes, but that doesn't mean that the Butterfly's colours are under-saturated, it means the colours on the other phones are OVER-saturated.
Now, of course, no one says you have to like accurate colours. Many people prefer displays where the colours are really bright and exaggerated. It's the same with audio: some people like a recording to sound the way it was intended to sound, other people just like as much bass as possible.
If you prefer inaccurate, exaggeratedly bright, over-saturated colours, that's perfectly reasonable. But you shouldn't go around claiming that the Butterfly's colours aren't accurate. You should say "the Butterfly's colours are really accurate, and I don't like accurate colours, I want a screen where the colours are really oversaturated".
And, to answer your original question: based on the evidence we have at the moment, it looks like the One's colours will be very accurate, so they will look very like the colours on a One X or a Butterfly. They won't be over-saturated like the colours on an S3.
Finally a sensible response. People complaining about saturation levels are almost always talking from the position of people who prefer their over-saturated, over-sharpened, over-contrasted displays which are tweaked that way in order to make them LOOK like they can cope but are not REALISTIC.
My wife has an iPhone 5 and I was recently formatting a couple of her photos for use on her web site. She sent me the original humongous photos because I prefer to work with as high a resolutrion as possible until I reduce it down to web size in png format. My first impression was "WOW ... look at the detail, and the colours are so vibrant" ... well since I've been reading these HTC-One topics, I've become somewhat sensitised to photo quality, and one of the photos was taken of some flowers in the house, so we took her phone to the flowers and compared the colours ... Nope ... good detail, wrong colours and overcooked contrast. Apple post-processing in action.
However ... having said that, and declaring my interest in HTC-One being successful (I have one coming soon) ... I think HTC let themselves down in the early software by over-sharpening. You can see it clearly in the halo artifacts around the black on white printing in the photo of a credit card that's doing the rounds .... I hope that gets sorted out in the final release software ...
Until then ... This isn't bad as a sample of colour quality. I've seen this lace in real life, and thee colours of the glass in the windows and around the roof , the detail inside the rooms though the windows, and the overall colour quality is extremely accurate ... not bad for something taken at night, of an illuminated facade, on a demo phone, using pre-release software ... Good enough for me anyway ...

Agreed. I played around with the Xperia Z recently, screen was HORRIBLE
It's a shame that Sony is using old tech for their flagship phones.
For me the first spec I check on a phone is the screen.
With the OneX SLCD2 I am very pleased by the screen and colors, much more than sgs2 where colors are way oversatured,so with the One SLCD3 I will be even more pleased

First full day with my Moto-x and Iphone pic comparision

I purchased a moto-x yesterday out of contract to give it a "road test" and If I liked it I would return it and order 32gb as my Iphone 5 replacement. I had to make a trip to NYC today. My train ride into Penn station is typically 1 hr 10 minutes and today I waited another 10 at the platform. I started out at 100% and started streaming Spotify over LTE and sat on reddit and google chrome for most of the way along with a few games of solitaire and burnt it down to 65%. I fared about the same with my Iphone 5 while making the same run pre-IOS7 however expect worse performance after the update. I was in battery park for the most of the day and lost another ~10% in the subway roaming/intermittent streaming. By the time I got on the train 7 hours later I was at 35%, I used the navigation for about 10 minutes to get some food (awesome btw).
Things I like about the phone.
The screen size is nicer than the Iphone 5 however may not be "as bright" I assume this has to do with the OLED screen.
The Active notifications has to be my favorite feature. It really is quite nice and I dread going back to my Iphone 5 without it.
The active feature while driving is nice however I haven't given it the full test yet.
Google Hangouts is amazing, it really is and I am going to force my girlfriend to use it on her iphone.
Android feels like a smart phone that wants to "help you". I'm sure that doesn't make sense. It just has some mystical google type power IMO.
Things I don't like.
I was hoping battery life would be a little better based on reviews, however I find it good enough.
The camera however this is an AT&T phone without the latest update. The camera will make or break this phone for me as I have a room full of fishing pictures, most are really good and taken with smartphone camera's (Iphone's.)
Also I tried to scan a barcode and it was just NOT happening while on the train, something the iphone did no problem (using myfitnesspal)
It also doesn't charge as fast as my iphone, however that may be because of the larger battery?
Also, when I return this phone this weekend, is there A way I can have everything backed up, so when I get my new phone I won't have to set everything up again and download all these apps over?
Here is the pic comparison, done side by side. http://imgur.com/a/tywmw
I'm actually having trouble making my picture look as bad off as you did and I am not able to reproduce it.
The color in my photos is spectacular, way better than my HTC One. I just took this of my salt water fish tank and it's way more than close... It's impeccably accurate.

Doing photo comparisons at this point is a waste of time. Att is going to have the update out very soon so why bother. The camera is great after the fix.
Compare then.
To answer your question you have the option to back up ur apps through your Google account. They redownload as soon as you log in on the next phone

People tend to like the over saturated photos that the iPhone and Samsung produces... The Moto X creates pictures closer to real life colors.
Its the same with DSLR's, Canon processes photos with colors close to real life but the Nikon gives it more saturation - newcomers tend to go Nikon for this reason.
I prefer the real life colors, and I'll add saturation if needed later on.
Edited.

Agree 100 percent, iPhone photos always bleed colors and it's especially seen in very detailed things.
In terms of Nikon and canon, I shoot with a Canon and only would buy an older Nokia if I was to but one myself.

NIKON, as you say.. Makes great cameras I don't see what your point here is besides starting a war that's been waged since the dawn of personal photography.
On another note, my main camera is a pentax k-5, that doesn't mean it shoots way better photos. But it's weather resistant and takes the best night pictures of any camera I've ever owned.

Just pointing out that any camera that has manual control can be adjusted to take life like colors. IMO comparing auto modes on manual cameras is stupid.
My boss shoots a k-5, its an attractive camera. I like that the image stabilization is in the camera not the lens.

Is it sharpness control, or simply some content not looking good due to the content's native resolution? Qhd monitors can have the same issue and depends how well the panel works with the gpu that is outputting signal. Maybe something that can be corrected in a low level hardware update.
Several reviews have pointed this out as well as some users, but not widespread enough to suggest all content is over sharpened.
BTW, this thread is a lit match for the fuse and powder keg known as G3 fans.

Fans will still deny and call the naysayers trolls. I guess Anandtech is a troll now along with other reviews and users pointing out the Qhd was more a negative than a positive for the display compared to 1080p.
Still, can the over sharpness be fixed, or an issue with the display? Great for owners if can be turned off.
the font sharpening on some background colors is really bad and hard to read for the eyes. i hope lg gives us the option to disable it or reduce it for a better reading experience.

I can understand them.
About sharpness and saturation, I read that they artificially (using software) made it such a. At a very low level. I do not know whether it is possible to fix
LG, fix it asap.
thank you.

Oh, yeah. Me thinks that Anand is tooo nit-picking. I guess the future Galaxy F review will be all praise and kudos. But I definitely sure that LG will turn off oversharping in some future updates, maybe will just leave it on in Asia and Korean ROMs
This is how bad the sharpening is.

Please tell me your not comparing a screenshot to a selfie taken in a mirror -_-
I've read all this stuff before when i bought my yoga 2 pro, being the first 3200x1800 res laptop. Nothing but comparisons to 1080p displays, critics talking about color inaccuracies. All the credible reviews said it was a total failure and more of a negative that a plus. But i'm glad I picked it up, I was able to hold it and hold a samsung notebook with a 1080p display and honestly it was night and day, the higher res wins. Maybe that's just me cuz i have 20/10 vision but if resolution is important to you don't overthink it and take all these display calibration tests too seriously. Make the judgement for yourself.

Mirror? What mirror? That is a picture I took of my G3. What do you even mean by "make the judgement for yourself"? I bought the G3 and have it with me, do you? The oversharpening is a flaw in the LG's software or display. It causes display problems with certain fonts (most obvious with a black font and a light coloured background) and it is a significant issue if you read ebooks. Hopefully this is something that LG can fix through a firmware update.
I previously had a G2, I think the G3 screen (color wise) looks fantastic.

My point is 90% of the critics are complaining about things most people wouldn't ever notice on their own. No I don't own a g3 right now and no I don't normally read ebooks. (and I can't really see anything wrong with the text in your pic)
When I say make the judgement for yourself I'm talking to the majority of us who don't own the phone, because I see way too many people (on here, reviews, supercurio) saying terrible things about the display. Just saying that from experience as I've been in this boat before buying the first 'next gen display' while it's being compared to 1080p displays that have been on the market for a while that have all the kinks worked out already.

This looks pretty bad. Would you be kind and show us classic Kindle black text on white bck? I'd greatly appreciate it!
I noticed this when my phone's firmware got upgraded a few days back. The text seems a bit weird.

I have seen the sharpness issue and the only way you will not notice it is if the new device pixie dust does not wear off. Anandtech and other reputable sites as will as users have noticed it.
Should be a simple setting that LG can turn off. Hopefully.
Well, I love my G3, I haven't been near a bong in years, and my vision is perfectly good (with contacts).
I find the oversharpening is irritating too, though. So any software fix would be very welcome.

Definitely is. The find 7 uses the same screen and doesn't do the over sharpening. I think they did it to try to emphasize the need for the resolution.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S5 Display (Color Representation)

Hi,
I'm in process of buying Galaxy S5 but have one question to be answered. I've read some mixed reviews regarding the display performance and color representation of the S5 and I couldn't decide who to believe. I've read that cinema mode is the most accurate but also seen some reviews that it isn't as good either. A one of the most recent article on PhoneArena about displays also added to my fears regarding S5 display.
I want to ask from S5 users that is it really the case, does it really noticeable while viewing videos/images or playing games etc. How does cinema mode competes with M8, Z2 etc.
Phonearena have done quite a few blunders recently in their reviews, I don't trust them.
I'd rather go for AnandTech and DisplayMate test results. They have given the S5 very high marks.

Thanks for your reply. As you are using S5 can you please tell me your personal experience with display.
I recently changed from a S3 to S5 (G900F). The colors are much more natural than S3's, the screen is a lot brighter and the quality is awesome. It has extremely deep black so deep that you can't distinguish if the screen is off or on! Even in a dark room. The brightness helps when you are outdoors. I live in Macedonia, Greece and here in Greece we have a lot of sunshine through the year, especially now I find it easier to use under sunlight than the S3. Also the white is very good.
So, to sum up:
-Natural colors
-Deep black
-Very bright when you need it.
-Battery savings thanks to amoled technology.
I recommend that you use the phone in person before buying it, from a friend or at a store. This is my personal experience so don't take it for granted. You may end up with different results from me when you use it because everyone has different needs/expectations.

I really like it but I use it on Cinema mode all the time. I can't stand oversaturation coming from a Nexus 5.
So, would you guys suggest that Cinema Mode is the way to go for everyday use?

Quite a bit, it's not bad at all.
Cinema mode is the Most natural But is stile Not perfect. With root could be possible To chance color value in The Files with The screen configurations? Chance The code strings. Because it is only a setting like The TV setting preset... But on a TV we Can set manually contrast gamma saturation ecc.. It would be interesting To find Files in The Phone that contains The sets of The screen And Try To change......

LG G4 camera's problems

Hello I wanted to create this thread because this phone is really nice and has a great camera, but not perfect at all, first problem is the raw mode, it's cool but why is has some darker corner and green tint ?? and it's only 20Mo instead of 30Mo with Camera FV-5 and ProShot apps.
But Vincent2167 find a calibration file : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61360315&postcount=314
LG still have to fix it and don't need this...
An other problem is the camera mode, we can't record in 1080p in 60fps, it kind of sucks for a flagship in 2015, but the worst is the 4K video, the video is pixelated, try to shot a landscape with a blue sky, you will noticed that the sky is very pixelated... probably because the bitrate is too low, only 30Mbps for 4K is low low. I read it's almost 50Mbps for the Galaxy S6.
To finish, the camera mode when you do a zoom, a close up, the mic change and the sound quality recorded become very bad, especially when you want to record a concert, you can see it here :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKJZqdD8oZc
@0:34 when we zoom the mic change and the sound is closed, pretty bad, when it unzoom the sound come to reality @1:28
Edit : I forgot the video stabilisation, I think LG can do better, and has to do something to activated or deactivated the stabilisation because it makes the picture very distorted when moving.
Edit 2 : The front camera pretty good details, but the background is always overexposed even with HDR activated, so bye selfies with nice landscape.
So please LG fix this, it's nothing, sound like you just wanted to contain all real potentials of the G4, and wait to make for G5 or what ?
Edit 3 : Since Marshmallow, videos in 4K have better bitrate, 46Mbps instead of 30Mpbs only with Lollipop.
Why doesn't the camera app have a night mode setting anymore? I'm too old to remember ISO and shutter settings anymore. In fact, the stock camera app seems to be missing many features that existed on the G2 stock camera app.

Because its not needed any more. The G4 will take a night shot by itself if it thinks its necessary. It even does this with the front camera.

Did you see this mod ?
60fps does not seem stable but higher bitrate 48Mbs? at 4k looks to work. Needs root though.
Suspect they used a lower bitrate rate to keep file size, power consumption as well as heat low as possible. With the Z3 in warmer climates you could not get it to record 4k for more than 3 minutes (!) cold weather was better.

You basically answered your own question. It's not needed anymore *because* we can now manually control ISO and shutter speed.

UP, I hope LG will fix it. Do you think the stabilisation in the video can be improved ?

Have you rooted devices? I own H815 and don't have OFF or ON on sliders in settings (just I or O).
If rooted, how did you change temperature? Root app?
No I'm not root, I found this picture here, and I went to the store, the LG G4 has different screen temps, in the store it was cold, mine is warmer... So I wanted to know which one has the best accurate colors or which one has been reviewed on internet.

Neither. The warm has more yellow and the cold has more blue. some people like colder screens ie blue. Course the degree of tint matters, if its too yellow or too blue then its not good as you never see white. This matters if you are watching movies or seeing photos but less if you are reading docs say..
The term 'accurate' isn't a good one because accurate colours require expensive screens to reproduce and are not attractive to view.
So vendors tweak the colours so that they pop and are pleasing. it seems pleasing is more important to people than accurate.
there is no way to calibrate a phone screen either, android does not support it yet like you could do using a spider say with a regular monitor. And this calibration needs to be done on a regular basis to remain accurate.
personally i prefer warmer as its easier on the eyes. on my laptop i have a utility called f.lux that drops the colour temperature after sunset. otherwise its like staring into a headlight! have to turn it off when viewing photos but otherwise for working its been great.
i did the same with my phone using an app called twilight.
Ok, but when I said accurate, I meant the color reproduction of the others colors, I think I read someone said warmer teint has better color reproduction than the cold one but I can't find it anymore. Personnaly I prefer cold, because of his real white, but not too cold to be blue.
